The Untouchables: Right-Wingers Put Themselves in an Uncompromising 'World Apart'

A report issued Friday by Democracy Corps shows that the most conservative Republicans consider themselves part of an underdog minority.

Commentators, including writers from Blog for Our Future's Sara Robinson and author Neal Gabler, have observed a resurgent brand of conservatism that has taken on the characteristics of religious zealotry. It is a brand of conservatism that cannot be negotiated with because its adherents see themselves as the bearers of the one true faith and as victims of a host of apostate "others" who they feel must not be appeased through compromise.

Elements of that brand of conservatism can be seen in a report issued Friday by Democracy Corps based on interviews with groups of conservatives and moderates in Cleveland, Ohio.

"The self-identifying conservative Republicans who make up the base of the Republican Party stand a world apart from the rest of America," the report says, not because they stand in fervent ideological disagreement with President Obama and the mainstream of the Democratic Party but because they "identify themselves as part of a ‘mocked’ minority with a set of shared beliefs and knowledge, and commitment to oppose Obama that sets them apart from the majority in the country."

Among the characteristics of what the report calls "a world apart":

These conservative Republican voters believe Obama is deliberately and ruthlessly advancing a ‘secret agenda’ to bankrupt our country and dramatically expand government control over all aspects of our daily lives. They view this effort in sweeping terms, and cast a successful Obama presidency as the destruction of the United States as it was conceived by our founders and developed over the past 200 years.

This concern combines with a profound sense of collective identity. In our conversations, it was striking how these voters constantly characterized themselves as part of a group of individuals who share a set of beliefs, a unique knowledge, and a commitment of opposition to Obama that sets them apart from the majority of the country. They readily identify themselves as a minority in this country – a minority whose values are mocked and attacked by a liberal me- dia and class of elites. They also believe they possess a level of knowledge and understanding when it comes to politics and current events, one gained from a rejection of the mainstream media and an embrace of conservative media and pundits such as Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, which sets them apart even more. Further, they believe this position leaves them with a responsibility to spread the word, to educate those who do not share their insights, and to take back the country that they love. Their faith in this country and its ideals leave them confident that their numbers will grow, and that they will ultimately defeat Barack Obama and the shadowy forces driving his hidden agenda.

These voters can't be viewed in partisan terms, the report goes on to say. They are as likely to label Republican politicians as political infidels as their Democratic counterparts. Nor, the report says, do the views of this group appear overtly to be racially motivated hatred toward Barack Obama as the first biracial president. Rather, "they are actively rooting for Obama to fail as president because they believe he is not acting in good faith as the leader of our country... [T]hey explicitly believe he is purposely and ruthlessly executing a hidden agenda to weaken and ultimately destroy the foundations of our country."

It sounds to some of us like the stuff that is babbled by mentally ill homeless people, but it's very real to the significant segment of the electorate that gets its framing of the political debate from Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and their ilk. The danger for progressives, and for democracy as a whole, as Gabler wote, is this:

Having opted out of political discourse, they are not susceptible to any suasion. Rationality won't work because their arguments are faith-based rather than evidence-based. Better message control won't work. Improved strategies won't work. Grass-roots organizing won't work. Nothing will work because you cannot convince religious fanatics of anything other than what they already believe, even if their religion is political dogma.

It is hardly surprising that Right Wing conservatives have formed this opinion, because many Left Wing liberals have too.

To put this down to faith based religious extremism is just delusional Obama propaganda.

Try an objective analysis, with regards to what has happenned since Obama was annointed and the Brzezinski cabal replaced the defunct neocons even before the election.

Webster Tarpley spelt it out in intimate detail before the election took place. He wrote two very detailed books on Obama and analysed the power behind his presidency. He spelt it all out in black and white and even did a 20 minute comprehensive Youtube video predicting exactly what would happen. Austerity - that's impoverishment was First on the agenda - for the American people. This was swiftly delivered on time, before he had formerly taken over, but whilst Bush/Cheney had already effectively been replaced. Next on the agenda was the escalation of the war in Afghanistan and the bombing of North West Pakistan - also delivered exactly as the team demanded - even Bush/Cheney thought this was crazy.

Fluff pieces like this are not going to patch up the sinking ship. Maybe Obama can still save it, but he's got to replace the ship's officers with a team who want to save the Good Ship USA rather than crashing it into the rocks. He's currently heading for Mutiny and it will not be pleasent, cos the rest of the crew are armed to the teeth with tea bags.

I suggest the first thing he does is shut down the disasterous illegal foreign wars and bring the troops home to defend their home turf.

The men behind Barack Obama part 1

The men behind Barack Obama part 2

Wingnut amnesia

Is it not astonishing that this whining, puling "underdog minority" have already forgotten they were just in power?

Earth calling Lunar Right. Guys--you were just in power. It was only a few months back. You had control over all three branches of government--AND YOU FUTZED UP COMPLETELY!

I'm calm now. But this sudden onslaught of wingnut amnesia testifies to just how crazy the Right in America are. Apparently, if something is painful or inconvenient--say, the catastrophic and abysmal failure of all of your policies--you just forget it. Zap--and it was all Bill Clinton's fault.

If you go around the web, you can verify for yourself--the Right have virtually forgotten the George W. Bush administration. They honest-to-God don't remember they were just in power.

It must be next to impossible to maintain this sort of repression. That must be why the Rights' eyes bug out so much.

Fellow Americans, our children are not safe with people this insane running around free. The left is going to have to realize the political right are a major public-health problem. I see no other solution than to herd them to Utah, where they can have their own country.

Imagine--a nation consisting almost entirely of aging white males. They can practise their wingeresque policies to their hearts' content.

They will be dead within weeks. This will lower the Wingnut Threat Level.

Still More Right Wing Lunacy

It is a strange and unsettling juxtaposition.

Yesterday - it seemed that the loony right wing was placed on this this earth in order to give the rest of us a giggle; so much entertaining, unintentional humor spilling out from that movement. They were just so damned funny!

Today - Well, let's just say for the record that it isn't all that funny any longer.

The fact that a genuine kook and fool like Glenn Beck can have a national forum. The fact that so many Americans are stupid enough to take him seriously! It is an unsettling thing indeed to see so many of them salivating at the sound of Beck's bell - like a mass gathering of Pavlov's Dogs.

I shall illustrate this nasty point by telling a tale of two marches on Washington. One took place in the late summer of 1963, the other in the late summer of 2009. One was promoted by a preacher from Georgia named Martin Luther King, the other by a former "shock jock" from the state of Washington named Glenn Beck. Ouch! Even mentioning the two of them in the same paragraph is somehow disconcerting.

In 1963, the the people were singing, We Shall Overcome.

Forty-six years later, the chant was, We Shall Undermine.

In 1963, a vast and varied demographic of the American people - all races and religions - descended on the nation's capitol to peaceably and nonviolently protest an injustice that was occurring in certain areas of the country to people of a certain skin pigmentation.

Forty-six years later, a Convention of Pissed-Off White People - united only by the fact that they were all habitual viewers of a single cable news channel - rolled into Washington to hurl invective at an African American president for creating a mess that he had absolutely nothing to do with creating.

In 1963, the signs people held up were optimistic: "With Liberty and Justice for All."

Forty-six years later, the signs were ominous: "We Came Unarmed - THIS TIME!"

On August 28, 1963, the hearts of people who marched on the city of Washington DC were filled with love and hope.

On September 12, 2009 they were just full of shit.

Let us boil the comparisons down to their juicy essentials, shall we?

Martin Luther King had a dream. Glenn Beck has a scheme.

Frustrated right wing Americans are not in the minority, they only appear to be. If the corporations that run America are threatened by liberal government policies there will be a call to arms. Millions of frustrated whites will come out of their trailers parks and wave confederate flags. They no longer will be carrying pitchforks.

...the Reich Wing courted the religious fundamentalists.

Like Alice in Wonderland's White Queen, they are able to "...imagine six impossible things before breakfast" - and take them as gospel truth.

In fact, they believe their political mythology with the same religious fervor as they hang on to their deformed version of Christianity. The two go hand-in-hand.

A shared sense of suffering gives them cohesion, and a sense of belonging to the "in" clique of "the elect of God".

We are apostate - in the religious and political sense - and are not worthy of engaging in civil dialogue.

In their fantasy world, when - in the End Times - they are en-Rapture-d in their war-gasm of righteous revenge, they will have their told you so! moment.

They are holding out in lonely vigil for this moment.

Please God, let their numbers shrink and fade away! (And if you really are their God, you go away too!)

Victim Position of the Right
Posted by: Lilly on Oct 21, 2009 7:00 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Thinking of themselves as underdog and victim is basic to the mindset of the right-wing conservative. Between talk radio and FOX TV (both on the air dozens of hours each week) these folks exercise huge control over shaping public opinion (and don't think they don't just because your pals don't believe Obama is building concentration camps---check out some right-wing forums to see what small-town Alabama is saying). And yet these folks never shut up about how marginalized and victimized they are by the so-called left-biased media. This reaction is not based in reality; from everything I get on my TV and in my two daily newspapers, the MSM are not all that sparing of Obama, and the right wing cried "poor us" even when it controlled the White House and all of Congress.

Go to townhall.com (which seems to have blocked me again so anyone inclined to post there is invited to take up the good fight in my place) and you will see that a good 75% of the articles take a victim position. The modal tone is "whine". Conservatives are "real Americans" who live in the "Heartland" where they bravely preserve honorable, moral, family, and patriotic values; meanwhile liberals, Hollywood, all media but the right-wing media, college professors and intellectuals of all kinds, the public school system, minorities, Affirmative Action, Civil Rights law, "elites", Congressmen, and most especially Obama, are in league to defeat honor, tradition, and patriotism. And, not stopping there, right wingers up the ante by insisting that Obama's agenda is deliberately pernicious and is focused on destroying American government and delivering the nation up to Socialism, Communism, Fascism, and/or Islam---so that honor lies in resistance, and patriotism justifies violence ("we are helpless victims" somehow becomes "we are armed and dangerous").

My guess is that the more church-oriented among right wingers are identifying with the crucified Christ and that the rest just like to wallow in the moral superiority of the victim.

The old definition of chutzpah as murdering your parents then throwing yourself on the mercy of the court as an orphan is constantly out-done by the right wing. Therefore, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Michelle Malkin, and Ann Coulter---foul-mouthed demagogues all---are "victims of slander" and we see constant demands for "apology" by the right. Unfortunately, the left gets suckered into apologizing all too often.

Enough people, there is a separation of Chuch & STATE for a reason......

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I for one am tired of these whiners, yes, whiners - crying poor is me when their only approach to government is the "Christian Taliban" style! Can someone just slap them across the face a couple of times, like you do to someone that is hysterical, just to get their attention!

Their behavior is the very reason that there is a separation between CHURCH & STATE! Just in case people forget history - the "founders" fought a war to throw off the tyranny of monarchy, and religious persecution because they had lived through it, and they knew that tyranny is tyranny be it monarchy or Taliban!!

I have no problem with people having faith in G-D! I have a problem with "other" people imposing their beliefs, and their interpretation on me! That is the reason that we live in America! Each to pursue our lives and our G-d (or not) the way that we (as individuals) want to! As "society" we come together to pass laws that are for the benefit of everyone, we do what is morally correct for "society" irrespective of religious beliefs! I would love to say that we can leave it to the better nature of our Angels, unfortunately, far too many have forgotten about those Angels in the quest for private gain! And though it is not just rethugnikans that have gotten so "caught up" in this herd mentality, "we" all have to stop and rationally analyze what's going on, or we all will sink together!

I find it odd that so many people think alike so much of the time. Unlike the progressive and independent types who frequently disagree amongst themelves. For that reason the loud mouths who run their show are safe no matter what they say. Do they have 100% backing all the time or are their people too lazy to disagree? Either way, they have clout because they are united. Their cause doesn't matter. But it is a frightening adversary. This is exactly the mindset that got us into Iraq. It was never the right thing to do, but there wasn't enough objection to stop it. It's important to isolate as many of these people as possible. As their numbers shrink so does their clout. Right now our country is re-railed by a small number of people shouting at us on the radio and TV. While I object to their tactics, they do work. Their audience is easy to manipulate. There's very litle resistance. It doesn't feel right to lose ground to people who's strategy is to do nothing. They Just shut up and listen. It makes me crazy. ANNA

The only significant difference between the two presidencies thus far has been the rhetorical floor show. Change?--The planes are still flying into Dover with their flag-draped luggage. Change?--The banks and financial intermediaries were given trillions backed by the US government. Change?-- The Patriot Act is still going strong. Change? Change? Change? Change?

If you work for a living and vote Demopublican you deserve what you get--WAR, UNEMPLOYMENT AND HOMELESSNESS.

Our Governments Are Just One Appalling Example. Why are They Not Prosecuting The Most BLATANT FRAUDSTERS at The Highest Levels In The Banking Cartels?

It is happenning at EVERY Level.

My 21 Year Old Son Runs a Small Internet Business. This Involves a Bit of Travel in The UK...

So he is travelling from The South To The North of England...

He is Tired - and The Warning Signs on The Mtorway - say = "Stop and Take a Break" Tiredness Can Kill

So he stops and takes a break at the next Motorway Service Station at 5:00am in the Morning.

He has 3 hours sleep in his car - (actually it is my car but he is fully insured to drive it)

And I get a Fine today in the Post - for £80 - but you can have a discount and only have to pay £50 if you don't complain.

On entrance to The Sevice Station is an Automatic Number Plate Recognition System - and on Exit...

If You Stay For less than 2 hours you are O.K.

But if you (read the small print on the parking signs in an empty car park) and stay for over 2 hours you will be fined - and you may have your car clamped - and if you do it will cost you £500 to have it removed.

My Son is just trying to run his business. It is not making a profit - because he has been totally Fucked Over By Several Other Bunches of Fascists...

They Even Spoof Him...

Get His Company's Identity - and send out Emails - that look completely Normal - and Official - with his company Logo and all details copied.. - and say Click on This - to Maintain Your Security....

THE CLICK is A FUCKING COMPUTER VIRUS

He says - well - I must be doing well - if They are Even Spoofing Me...

This Makes Me Incredibly Angry

My Son is Completely Honest - and a few years ago The Authorities Used to Work With Him - To Trace and Prosecute Such Frauds...

But Now it Is So Endemic - They Seem To Have Given Up...

My Son Won't Give Up Though.

He is Just Trying To Run His Business, HONESTLY

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Do You Think He is A Capitalist? Is He Fair Game - For Trying To Make an Honest Living?

Tony

This is CLASSIC Projection:

a.The attribution of one's own attitudes, feelings, or suppositions to others: "Even trained anthropologists have been guilty of unconscious projection-of clothing the subjects of their research in theories brought with them into the field" (Alex Shoumatoff).
b.The attribution of one's own attitudes, feelings, or desires to someone or something as a naive or unconscious defense against anxiety or guilt.

seems they need some psychotherapy.

Republican businessmen take for themselves all the American heroes, including Abraham Lincoln, whose fame resulted from the war that freed the slaves and blasted the southern way of life. But at the same time, they require various forms of indentured servitude for their own existence and continued wealth and preferential power in society.

Not at any moment would they admit they are dependent on the people they despise as inferior, which includes most of us on the planet.

Their philosophy is that people are useful and that they are "giving" them jobs out of the goodness of their hearts, but that they really could run their businesses alone because they are so very superior to us common workers.

Of course, their opposing ideas definitely seem like the ruminations of an egomaniac, don't they? They need help, but don't want to admit it.

As one of your comentators pointed out, the Libertarian Right has much in common now with the Left as they both see the same enemy for what it is, Big Money Establishment fascism. Many "Liberals" still follow the influence of the that media and peers and ignore the reality of the fact that we have neither a comservative Republican party nor an egalitarian Populist Democratic party, with only a minority of exceptions. (Think Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich, both ignored Presidential candidates best representing those 2 major Parties.) Otherwise the far Right has every reason to feel they are outsiders given that they are self-destructive, brainwashed, reactionary, sociopathic paranoids. (No name calling intended.)

This Is A Very Unfair Presentation on The State of Affairs

This article, though well intentioned makes numerous errors. It begins by implying that only conservatives are concerned with the Obama game plan. Well, the American people as a whole are against the coporate givaways. Who is this writer to imply that a far right fringe of the Republican Party are the only ones resisting this? We all know this is not true. Sure, the far right has been the most vocal, but the reality is that Americans of all political persuasions have deep concerns. With respect to health care, Under current projections, about 46 million people do not have health insurance. That means that about 85% do. And given the fact that Obama has made major concessions to Big Pharma and the Hospitals and the insurance companies, to make sure they maintain their profits, why is this position so bizarre?I mean by far the majority of the public is very happy with their health care pclicies--because they have a choice. With the proposed health care plan, they may not have the same choices they are used to. Does this concern make someone a raving fundamental lunatic? No one is saying that those 46 million uninsured Americans are not deserving of insurance. What the majority are saying is that they want to be covered and not have to pay for the entire third world's coverage as well. They're not stupid--they know there is no free lunch--someone is going to have to pay for these programs. We are racking up major deficits--is it unreasonable to be concerned about how we are going to have to pay them back? We are talking about saddling our children and grandchildren with mountains of debt. Is this the legacy that we want to leave our heirs? Why does even asking the question make one a part of the lunatic fringe? As usual both the right and the left are engaging in partisan advocacy journalism. It used to be that Progressives could at least be counted on to take the high road and focus on the balanced truth. The sad reality is that both groups are lying and misrepresenting--as demonstrated by this bogus "impartial" presentation.

"Obama is deliberately and ruthlessly advancing a ‘secret agenda’ to bankrupt our country"

RIGHT WING GROUP THINK

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
