Tough Progressive Congressman Alan Grayson Is Putting the Fear in Republicans
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest News & Politics headlines via email.
Washington Republicans are horrified, horrified, horrified by the bluntness of Florida Democratic Congressman Alan Grayson.
The tough kid from the Bronx (and Harvard Law School) who represents an until recently Republican Orlando-area district pulled no punches Tuesday, when he declared on the House floor: "The Republican health care plan is this: Don't get sick, and if you do get sick, die quickly."
After his GOP colleagues recovered from the shock of a Democrat actually calling them out, they demanded an apology.
Grayson returned to the House floor to announce that: "I would like to apologize, I apologize to the dead and their families that we haven't voted sooner to end this holocaust in America."
So unfamiliar with the notion that a Democrat might actually take the healthcare debate seriously enough to try and win it, the Republicans presumed that Grayson had gone off the deep end. The National Republican Congressional Committee screeched: "This is an unstable man who has come unhinged. The depths to which Alan Grayson will sink to defend his indefensible comments know no bounds."
NRCC spokesman Ken Spain claimed in an interview with the Capitol Hill newspaper The Hill that: "This is an individual who has established a pathological pattern of unstable behavior."
Grayson hasn't cracked.
The former assistant (on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to current U.S. Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia, and conservative judicial icon Robert Bork) is dealing in facts.
Indeed, the Harvard grad has seized on a study produced by researchers at his old school that details how 44,000 Americans die annually because they lack health insurance. And he is laughing off a Republican attempt to formally condemn his choice of words.
Georgia GOP Congressman Tom Price does not think it is fair for a Democrat to counter months of Republican hyperbole with actual statistics. So the Georgian has drafted a resolution that accuses Grayson of committing "a breach of decorum and (degrading) the integrity and proceedings of the House."
Grayson's response: "A resolution like that doesn't save one human being's life."
The resolution has yet to be introduced and is unlikely to get far in the overwhelmingly Democratic House. Like the silly Democratic resolution seeking objecting to South Carolina Republican Congressman Joe Wilson's boorish behavior during President Obama's address to the Joint Session of Congress, Price's proposal is a meaningless exercise.
Yet, Grayson's more cautious colleagues in the Democratic caucus (notably caucus chair John Larson of Connecticut) say they'll urge their Jewish colleague to back away from some of his remarks -- especially a Holocaust reference that, while on-point to the view of those who see the denial of healthcare to the sick as an act of brutality, seemed gratuitous and unnecessary to politicians who are ill at ease with such passionate language.
Grayson, whose official biography begins with a telling quotation from the Torah ("Justice, justice, ye shall seek..."), shows no signs of backing down.
The congressman, who beat an entrenched Republican incumbent in 2008 and is confident he'll win again in 2010 (perhaps with some support from libertarian Republicans who appreciate his loose alliance with 2008 GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul on issues of holding Federal Reserve bankers to account) says he is hearing a lot more praise than criticism
"People are calling us from all over the country to congratulate us for telling the truth," says Grayson. "People are happy to see a Democrat with guts."
In fact, Grayson has a lot to teach a Democratic caucus that has not begun to fight for health care reform.
While Republicans have been waging a war against reform, Democrats have been in duck-and-cover mode -- until now.
Grayson may sound a little over-the-top to some Capitol insiders.
Some of his language may unsettle even his allies.
But to Americans who this week witnessed the revolting rejection by Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee of even mild reforms like the proposed "public option," the Florida congressman's words will sound like the sanest message coming not just from his side of the aisle but from all of official Washington.

What the Republicans, cowardly corrupted Democrats, and the health insurance industry are perpetrating is a massacre of the sick who don't have sufficient resources to cover co-pays and denied claims. Everyone is at peril unless you are fabulously wealthy -- which isn't most Americans.

This fight is the most important since the inception of Social Security, so in no way do I want to minimize it.
But to me, of almost equal importance, progressive leadership is emerging now and pushing it's way to the fore.
On the issues, the majority of the American public has been overwhelmingly progressive (although many who support progressive issues would recoil from that label) for a long time. But our institutions are overwhelmingly conservative and the term "fighting liberal" has become almost a contradiction in terms. I mark that time from the fight over Rayguns enormous tax cuts for the rich. When a few Dems pointed out that that's what they were, Republicans screamed "Class warfare!"
Democrats then obligingly shut up. Most of em were about to become a lot richer themselves because of those tax cuts, you see. Since that time, there have been occasional sputters of outrage from a Dem or two, but progressives have been effectively shut out of the debate - until now.
I don't know whether we will win this fight or not. I have a feeling that I'm not going to like the bill that Obama eventually signs very much. There will be other fights coming, however, and I predict that we are going to be winning a lot more of them in the future - thanks to Keith, Rachel, Ed, Wexler, Grayson and some others who understand that you have to fight fire with fire and scream bloody murder when the knuckle-draggers try to pull a fast one.

Let me guess, Democratic elders will try to "convince" Rep Grayson to apologize, probably with the threat of force or other extortion against him.
Yes, what he said is ABSOLUTELY TRUE! The Republicans and the Dem Blue Dogs would rather we all literally DIE than let anything of substance get out of Congress in regards to health care reform.
Grayson better not apologize! As a matter of fact, he should repeat such absolute FACTS over and over and louder and louder!

Does it represent and add to the coarsening of our society? Yes, but there is no other choice. The Democrats' polite, evenhanded, non-confrontational style has been an abject failure in Congress.

Democratic leadership aides said they knew of no effort underway to persuade Grayson to apologize for his remarks, and indicated that they did not believe Grayson's remarks had violated House rules the way many critics felt Wilson did. And with so much heated rhetoric surrounding the subject of health-care reform and loaded phrases like "death panels," Democrats have already assembled a list of examples where Republicans seemed to make the same charge Grayson did Tuesday night.
In July, for example, Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-Fla.) said on the House floor, "Last week Democrats released a health care bill which essentially said to America's seniors: drop dead." Earlier that month, Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) said Democrats' proposal for a public insurance option "is gonna kill people."
So whatever the resolution the Republicans come up with for Grayson, we have names to add to that list, hope someone has an amendment or two ready.

Mr. Grayson is getting a good deal of political mileage from his smackdown of the Republican Party. I applaud his courage. I don't believe he should apologize or face censure for his comments. They were perfectly appropriate for the forum. But he's a politician. And whenever a politician says anything, one must pay equal attention at what is not being said.
What the Honorable Mr. Grayson is not saying is how the legislation he supports will abate the the crisis of tens of thousands of people dying every year because tens of millions have to beg for rationed healthcare from private corporations.
Why the Current Bills Don't Solve Our Health Care Crisis
What Mr. Grayson conveniently avoids is discussion on which flavor of "public option" he endorses and why it is not doomed to fail.
Will Mr. Grayson support compromise legislation which denies reproductive health coverage to women? Or as Natasha Chart so aptly put it,
"If you like the coverage you have, you can keep it. Probably. Unless you're a chick.">
What I need to hear from Mr. Grayson is what private industry brings to the system other than a desire to profit from the misery and death of millions of Americans.
As explained to Amy Goodman recently on Democracy Now! by Kevin Zeese of Prosperity Agenda and Dr. Paul Hochfeld of Mad As Hell Doctors, any plan keeping the insurance industry in the process is a recipe for continued disaster and corruption.
Bad legislation is worse than no legislation.

All the Republicans have left is to channel the rage Americans are feeling at getting lied to and having their 401k accounts and pension funds robbed in broad daylght while Congress stood around and played with their fiddles.
Mr. Grayson has already laughed in Ben Bernanke's face for telling the whopper that Ben didn't know where all that loot the Fed handed out to their bankster friends went.
Mr. Grayson better be careful, he's pissing off some very powerful people.

First time that was really glaring is when some of the Democratic majority pointed out that Reagan's enormous tax cuts were a gift to the rich and the Rs screamed "Class warfare!" To my amazement, the Dems immediately shut up. The tax cuts passed.
Since then, "fighting liberal" has been almost a contradiction in terms. As a matter of fact, liberal became an epithet that few would accept being tied to.

He is a Harvard Phi Beta Kappa who has hired Matt Stoller - a really net-savvy blogger. They cooked up a beautiful plan.
"die quickly" = (from a Republican) Dems telling old people to "drop dead"
"holocaust?" favorite meme of the anti-abortion crowd. Grayson even remarked regarding Rs indifference to "living, breathing, people."
What finally nailed it down for me was the CNN clip where he called Republicans "nattering nabobs of negativism." That was Spiro Agnew's most famous line ever!
Folks, he was praying that the Rs would try to censure him! He was prepared to show that he has been quoting Republicans throughout.
Unfortunately, well-meaning lefties like us triggered the alarm over at fascist central, the Rs withdrew their resolution, and they are going to try to let it quietly go away. Had that resolution been debated, it would have been a national joke.
I am going to repost this now at the bottom of every Grayson thread I can find. Don't feel obliged to rec every one, lol.

Most of today's politicians prattle using emasculated language and circumlocution to avoid saying anything meaningful, taking a stand or assuming responsibility.
How about applying Quality Control discipline to Politics and establish Veracity Standards to hold politicians accountable? We regulate the Nuclear industry, don't we? Are citizens less important? Ultimately, social safety and order begin with truth from policy-makers on the House floor and in the think-tanks.
"Our review disclosed that [insert Congressman name here] had uttered and presented truth-class and truth-significant verbiage that did not meet PCQA-1 (Quality Assurance Requirements for Political Class Speech Applications) quality standards. Specifically, we identified multiple instances in which critical utterances did not meet required veracity standards."

If it's not Single Payer, it's not reform.
