Tough Progressive Congressman Alan Grayson Is Putting the Fear in Republicans

GOPers are shocked that a Democrat has the nerve to call them out on their repeated health care lies and scare tactics. Rep. Grayson says get used to it.

Washington Republicans are horrified, horrified, horrified by the bluntness of Florida Democratic Congressman Alan Grayson.

The tough kid from the Bronx (and Harvard Law School) who represents an until recently Republican Orlando-area district pulled no punches Tuesday, when he declared on the House floor: "The Republican health care plan is this: Don't get sick, and if you do get sick, die quickly."

After his GOP colleagues recovered from the shock of a Democrat actually calling them out, they demanded an apology.

Grayson returned to the House floor to announce that: "I would like to apologize, I apologize to the dead and their families that we haven't voted sooner to end this holocaust in America."

So unfamiliar with the notion that a Democrat might actually take the healthcare debate seriously enough to try and win it, the Republicans presumed that Grayson had gone off the deep end. The National Republican Congressional Committee screeched: "This is an unstable man who has come unhinged. The depths to which Alan Grayson will sink to defend his indefensible comments know no bounds."

NRCC spokesman Ken Spain claimed in an interview with the Capitol Hill newspaper The Hill that: "This is an individual who has established a pathological pattern of unstable behavior."

Grayson hasn't cracked.

The former assistant (on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to current U.S. Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia, and conservative judicial icon Robert Bork) is dealing in facts.

Indeed, the Harvard grad has seized on a study produced by researchers at his old school that details how 44,000 Americans die annually because they lack health insurance. And he is laughing off a Republican attempt to formally condemn his choice of words.

Georgia GOP Congressman Tom Price does not think it is fair for a Democrat to counter months of Republican hyperbole with actual statistics. So the Georgian has drafted a resolution that accuses Grayson of committing "a breach of decorum and (degrading) the integrity and proceedings of the House."

Grayson's response: "A resolution like that doesn't save one human being's life."

The resolution has yet to be introduced and is unlikely to get far in the overwhelmingly Democratic House. Like the silly Democratic resolution seeking objecting to South Carolina Republican Congressman Joe Wilson's boorish behavior during President Obama's address to the Joint Session of Congress, Price's proposal is a meaningless exercise.

Yet, Grayson's more cautious colleagues in the Democratic caucus (notably caucus chair John Larson of Connecticut) say they'll urge their Jewish colleague to back away from some of his remarks -- especially a Holocaust reference that, while on-point to the view of those who see the denial of healthcare to the sick as an act of brutality, seemed gratuitous and unnecessary to politicians who are ill at ease with such passionate language.

Grayson, whose official biography begins with a telling quotation from the Torah ("Justice, justice, ye shall seek..."), shows no signs of backing down.

The congressman, who beat an entrenched Republican incumbent in 2008 and is confident he'll win again in 2010 (perhaps with some support from libertarian Republicans who appreciate his loose alliance with 2008 GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul on issues of holding Federal Reserve bankers to account) says he is hearing a lot more praise than criticism

"People are calling us from all over the country to congratulate us for telling the truth," says Grayson. "People are happy to see a Democrat with guts."

In fact, Grayson has a lot to teach a Democratic caucus that has not begun to fight for health care reform.

While Republicans have been waging a war against reform, Democrats have been in duck-and-cover mode -- until now.

Grayson may sound a little over-the-top to some Capitol insiders.

Some of his language may unsettle even his allies.

But to Americans who this week witnessed the revolting rejection by Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee of even mild reforms like the proposed "public option," the Florida congressman's words will sound like the sanest message coming not just from his side of the aisle but from all of official Washington.

Alan Grayson has a future in the Democratic party, we hope, stiffening the resolve of others to fight for health care for all people.
I'm delighted with his comments about Republicans and well-paid Democrats who are working for the health care industry and not representing their constituents.

Congratulations Representative Grayson -- you have quickly jumped up on my list of favorite people in Congress. You join Mr. Kucinich, Mr. Conyers and your partner from Florida Rep. Robert Wexler. Please do NOT back down from your comments. And all your Dems/progressives/liberals (however you prefer to categorize yourself) that are reading this, begin speaking the same way to your friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc. I am. Tell the truth but be blunt and real...counter every falsehood and fabrication immediately. When you are right, be confident and strong. If we can't win this issue, we're hopeless indeed. Write and call your Senators and Representatives DAILY. If the cry keeps getting bigger, it will be heard and acted on.

Its about time. I found it interesting that he won his seat with help from the Libertarians. Perhaps we might see a 2nd party emerge, one the corporotists (formerly knows as Dems and Repubs) and then all the others in the other party.

I don't understand why Republicans can tell all the lies they want, have conservative talk radio hosts berate anyone they choose and con people into protesting something that is good for them and everyone else. But if ONE Democrat stands up to them and calls them out on their lies, WITH ACTUAL STATISTICS, not a bunch of made-up rhetoric, Republicans lose their mind and have the NERVE to call it a lack of decorum.
I guess the Bully doesn't like it when you don't cower and can't believe you'd call HIM a name. UNBELIEVEABLE!

When I read Alan Grayson's gutsy comments re. healthcare a strange feeling of relief came over me. At last one Democrat is willing to call a spade a spade. Others use more tempered language which lacks the emotional part of a person (save Kucinich). How can one win anything with only their brains working and not their emotions. Such people lose as the Democrats may one day wake up to see.

Finally, a Democrat with courage. What a refreshing change. He, and a few others (Kucinich, Feingold, and I hope the progressive caucus who have pledged to vote no on a bill with no strong public option). I love that Grayson spoke bluntly, and then followed it with an apology to the right people -- the dead and their families.

What the Republicans, cowardly corrupted Democrats, and the health insurance industry are perpetrating is a massacre of the sick who don't have sufficient resources to cover co-pays and denied claims. Everyone is at peril unless you are fabulously wealthy -- which isn't most Americans.

This is good news for John McCain

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

This fight is the most important since the inception of Social Security, so in no way do I want to minimize it.

But to me, of almost equal importance, progressive leadership is emerging now and pushing it's way to the fore.

On the issues, the majority of the American public has been overwhelmingly progressive (although many who support progressive issues would recoil from that label) for a long time. But our institutions are overwhelmingly conservative and the term "fighting liberal" has become almost a contradiction in terms. I mark that time from the fight over Rayguns enormous tax cuts for the rich. When a few Dems pointed out that that's what they were, Republicans screamed "Class warfare!"

Democrats then obligingly shut up. Most of em were about to become a lot richer themselves because of those tax cuts, you see. Since that time, there have been occasional sputters of outrage from a Dem or two, but progressives have been effectively shut out of the debate - until now.

I don't know whether we will win this fight or not. I have a feeling that I'm not going to like the bill that Obama eventually signs very much. There will be other fights coming, however, and I predict that we are going to be winning a lot more of them in the future - thanks to Keith, Rachel, Ed, Wexler, Grayson and some others who understand that you have to fight fire with fire and scream bloody murder when the knuckle-draggers try to pull a fast one.

PLEASE, Rep Grayson, do NOT EVER apologize!

Let me guess, Democratic elders will try to "convince" Rep Grayson to apologize, probably with the threat of force or other extortion against him.

Yes, what he said is ABSOLUTELY TRUE! The Republicans and the Dem Blue Dogs would rather we all literally DIE than let anything of substance get out of Congress in regards to health care reform.

Grayson better not apologize! As a matter of fact, he should repeat such absolute FACTS over and over and louder and louder!

Republicans have gotten a pass on their nutbag policies and statements for decades. We need more Democrats like this. Ones with a spine.

Does it represent and add to the coarsening of our society? Yes, but there is no other choice. The Democrats' polite, evenhanded, non-confrontational style has been an abject failure in Congress.

One thing the article missed

It is really sad that the articles aren't pointing out Republican members of Congress who have talked about the Democratic proposals and the deaths they will cause. From WaPo:

Democratic leadership aides said they knew of no effort underway to persuade Grayson to apologize for his remarks, and indicated that they did not believe Grayson's remarks had violated House rules the way many critics felt Wilson did. And with so much heated rhetoric surrounding the subject of health-care reform and loaded phrases like "death panels," Democrats have already assembled a list of examples where Republicans seemed to make the same charge Grayson did Tuesday night.

In July, for example, Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-Fla.) said on the House floor, "Last week Democrats released a health care bill which essentially said to America's seniors: drop dead." Earlier that month, Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) said Democrats' proposal for a public insurance option "is gonna kill people."

So whatever the resolution the Republicans come up with for Grayson, we have names to add to that list, hope someone has an amendment or two ready.

Bad legislation is worse than no legislation

Mr. Grayson is getting a good deal of political mileage from his smackdown of the Republican Party. I applaud his courage. I don't believe he should apologize or face censure for his comments. They were perfectly appropriate for the forum. But he's a politician. And whenever a politician says anything, one must pay equal attention at what is not being said.

What the Honorable Mr. Grayson is not saying is how the legislation he supports will abate the the crisis of tens of thousands of people dying every year because tens of millions have to beg for rationed healthcare from private corporations.
Why the Current Bills Don't Solve Our Health Care Crisis

What Mr. Grayson conveniently avoids is discussion on which flavor of "public option" he endorses and why it is not doomed to fail.

Will Mr. Grayson support compromise legislation which denies reproductive health coverage to women? Or as Natasha Chart so aptly put it,
"If you like the coverage you have, you can keep it. Probably. Unless you're a chick.">

What I need to hear from Mr. Grayson is what private industry brings to the system other than a desire to profit from the misery and death of millions of Americans.

As explained to Amy Goodman recently on Democracy Now! by Kevin Zeese of Prosperity Agenda and Dr. Paul Hochfeld of Mad As Hell Doctors, any plan keeping the insurance industry in the process is a recipe for continued disaster and corruption.

Bad legislation is worse than no legislation.

Mr. Grayson's got guts, something that is sorely lacking in the House and Senate on both sides.

All the Republicans have left is to channel the rage Americans are feeling at getting lied to and having their 401k accounts and pension funds robbed in broad daylght while Congress stood around and played with their fiddles.

Mr. Grayson has already laughed in Ben Bernanke's face for telling the whopper that Ben didn't know where all that loot the Fed handed out to their bankster friends went.

Mr. Grayson better be careful, he's pissing off some very powerful people.

That has been the typical weak response to the type of bald-faced lies Republicans have been telling since the Reagan administration. (Rs lied before that too, but the Dems tended to hit back - hard.)

First time that was really glaring is when some of the Democratic majority pointed out that Reagan's enormous tax cuts were a gift to the rich and the Rs screamed "Class warfare!" To my amazement, the Dems immediately shut up. The tax cuts passed.

Since then, "fighting liberal" has been almost a contradiction in terms. As a matter of fact, liberal became an epithet that few would accept being tied to.

"If they bring a knife, you bring a gun..."

The country is with us. It's time to kick some ass.

Maybe his words were a bit over the top but I say he should apologize for nothing, not one word. It's perfectly fine for the Repugs to say that everything a Dem says or does is Nazi but when a feisty Dem calls them on their over the top analogies by one upping them, all hell breaks lose. They can sure dish it out but can't take it. It's about time somebody on our side started hitting back where it counts. I say RIGHT ON CONGRESSMAN.

Just imagin if the Democrats all came out and told it like it is and stood up for the American people ... we would not be at war and the Patriot Act would never have been passed .. the banks would be held accountable and our country would not be in so much trouble. Unfortunately what we are learning now is not just that Republicans are the party of no and obstruction ... we are also learning a sad truth ... that our government including the Democrats are for the most part run by big money .. the banks ... oil companies ...etc. In short many Democrats are really Republicans working against the American people as managers and front runners for the elite.

It was a huge joke on Republicans intended to make them laughingstocks. Damn near worked, too. Unfortunately, it was triggered prematurely by leftie bloggers innocently intending to defend Grayson by pointing out that Republican officeholders have hurled virtually identical inflammatory accusations at Democrats in recent months!

He is a Harvard Phi Beta Kappa who has hired Matt Stoller - a really net-savvy blogger. They cooked up a beautiful plan.

"die quickly" = (from a Republican) Dems telling old people to "drop dead"

"holocaust?" favorite meme of the anti-abortion crowd. Grayson even remarked regarding Rs indifference to "living, breathing, people."

What finally nailed it down for me was the CNN clip where he called Republicans "nattering nabobs of negativism." That was Spiro Agnew's most famous line ever!

Folks, he was praying that the Rs would try to censure him! He was prepared to show that he has been quoting Republicans throughout.

Unfortunately, well-meaning lefties like us triggered the alarm over at fascist central, the Rs withdrew their resolution, and they are going to try to let it quietly go away. Had that resolution been debated, it would have been a national joke.

I am going to repost this now at the bottom of every Grayson thread I can find. Don't feel obliged to rec every one, lol.

Of course, there are significant differences, such as his libertarian aspects. But his toughness and "speaking truth to power" is similar to Paul Wellstone (whose death was a tragedy to the country).

"passionate language"

Passionate language is what's needed to light fire under some asses.

Most of today's politicians prattle using emasculated language and circumlocution to avoid saying anything meaningful, taking a stand or assuming responsibility.

How about applying Quality Control discipline to Politics and establish Veracity Standards to hold politicians accountable? We regulate the Nuclear industry, don't we? Are citizens less important? Ultimately, social safety and order begin with truth from policy-makers on the House floor and in the think-tanks.

"Our review disclosed that [insert Congressman name here] had uttered and presented truth-class and truth-significant verbiage that did not meet PCQA-1 (Quality Assurance Requirements for Political Class Speech Applications) quality standards. Specifically, we identified multiple instances in which critical utterances did not meet required veracity standards."

Americans are warned by Congressman Alan Grayson that Republicans want them to die quickly during a House floor speech. He's implying that they don't care about an actual reform of the health care system, just as long as insurance companies keep making money and campaign contributions. They are trying to pass a resolution that will essentially shake a finger at him. Grayson has been a bit of an oddity thus far, famed for grilling anyone and everyone at the Federal Reserve with gusto. Alan Grayson isn't afraid of hurting anyone's delicate little feelings to get things done the right way – that's the kind of person who deserves payday loans or whatever into his campaign funding.

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]

Maybe his words were a bit over the top but I say he should apologize for nothing, not one word. JUST IMAGINE IF ALL DEMS WERE LIKE THIS

Republicans are the most petty childish babies on earth ... and now we are seeing that we have many RepubliDems who pretend to be for the people but who vote with the Republicans because they are owned by the super rich companies and the banks. To hell with Dems that have allowed the demise of this country .. they must be removed from the political discourse in Washington ... For the people and by the people ... long live the Republic and political death to its traitors.

Finally a democrat with a couple! The republicans have been lying about everything and the democrats have been shy to counter with the truth. Republicans are a disgusting bigoted ignorant sleazy dishonest group heading for extinction. It's long overdue we call them what they are.

I thought I'd die before seeing a Democrat with a set. I feel as though I've found a passenger pigeon or some other animal thought extinct.

We need a man like Grayson in the White House, while the Reid's and Pelosi's of this world can crawl back under the cowardly rocks they slimed out from under. Way to go, Grayson !!!

It is refreshing to see a political representative be so much himself. On the Canadian political scene we could use as much chutzpah!

Iggy, where are you???

Just figured it out folks. IT WAS A TRAP!

Reincarnation of Paul Wellstone ?

I wish that I could vote for you Representative Alan Grayson! Please, please, please keep speaking up for us and encourage other Democrats to follow your lead! (And thank you for not apologizing for speaking truth to noise.)

Alan Grayson

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
