Action Editorial: Why the Secret Service and FBI Must Investigate Threats Against Obama and Beef Up Security to Protect Him

With Obama the target of hate speech and over 30 death threats a day, the FBI needs to hear that it can't let budget shortfalls get in the way of the president's life.

The right-wing hate speech polluting the debate over health care is generating more and more threats against President Barack Obama, some truly frightening.

Will you join AlterNet and Credo and sign a petition calling for the FBI to do everything necessary to confront threats to Obama and expand and fully fund efforts to protect the president of the United States?

CNN anchor Rick Sanchez reports that when Obama visited Phoenix on Aug. 17, local minister Steven Anderson of the Faithful World Baptist Church, who strongly expresses hatred for Obama in many of his sermons, told his congregation that he wished him dead.

In a disturbing twist, it was discovered that Chris Broughton, the man who brought an AR-15 assault rifle to the Phoenix rally where Obama spoke, had attended Anderson's sermon. In a later interview, Broughton said he concurred with his pastor's wish to see Obama "die and go to hell." As many as 12 men were seen walking around the Phoenix Convention Center with guns on that day.

Obama faces 30 death threats a day, a 400 percent increase over those against George W. Bush when he was president, according to Ronald Kessler, a veteran investigative journalist and conservative and author of the new book, In the President's Secret Service: Behind the Scenes with Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect.

Kessler notes that funding cutbacks have already left the first African American president in U.S. history particularly vulnerable. The book, which alleges that the cash-strapped Secret Service is endangering the president by cutting corners, has sent shockwaves through Washington.

"There's no question his life is in danger.

"Tomorrow, Obama could be assassinated ... simply because the Secret Service was not doing what it used to do," said Kessler.

"We have half the number of agents we need, but requests for more agents have fallen on deaf ears at headquarters," a Secret Service agent told Kessler.

And if ever the Secret Service needed to be at its best, that time is now. The threats against Obama are not confined to Phoenix. Delusional fringe characters are not the only ones spouting hateful, inflammatory rhetoric.

Last Tuesday, according to the Huffington Post, Idaho Republican gubernatorial hopeful, Rex Rammell, said he'd buy a license to hunt Obama.

Meanwhile, conservative lawmakers are riling up their right-wing followers with outright racism. Last week, Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Kan., expressed her wish that the Republican Party would find a "great white hope" to take on the president in the next election.

As CNN's Rick Sanchez said on the air, "This looks serious. This almost looks like this is coming to the point where we are even beyond maybe where this nation was on Nov. 22 of 1963, when JFK was assassinated, when there was also an environment of hate in this country."

As racist attacks increase and protesters continue to bring guns to presidential events, it is strikingly clear that Obama is vulnerable to harm. Are the Secret Service and FBI doing enough to protect him? Will they confront and investigate those who threaten our president so that they can be prosecuted and jailed?

We cannot allow funding problems to weaken the organizations charged with protecting the life of our nation's president.

In 2003, the Secret Service and FBI became part of the Department of Homeland Security and now must compete with 20 other agencies for oversight from their chief, Janet Napolitano. She must use her authority to ensure that the Secret Service and FBI put more agents on the ground to protect Obama and confront and investigate those who threaten him.

It is time for Americans of every stripe to insist that the Secret Service and FBI operate at the highest levels of effectiveness.

Sign your name to this petition so that Napolitano, secretary of homeland security, hears the message loud and clear. And please pass this message on to your friends and colleagues.

It is a difficult time in America, and we have to stand up and make sure our president is safe.

The whole point behind creating the Department of Homeland Security was to finish the job of politicizing these organizations. Same as the Justice Department. I say pull the men off of Cheney and W and let their Saudi masters try to keep their sorry asses alive. 30 death threats a day! I knew the 'hawks' would be the first to descend into actual terrorist behavior as we become what we fight against. Hell, they were the ones who originally trained the Afghan Mujahadeen in these tactics to fight the Soviets. Monsters creating more monsters while all the while blaming the peace and love people for all the violence. This is quite extraordinary. The United States will be gravely damaged if there should be another Lincoln, another Kennedy brothers. And Reagan took a bullet even with the Secret Service properly funded.

If Homeland Security are having financial difficulties over necessary specially increased funding for the Secret Service then European Governments should be asked to bear part of the cost. They all have a vital interest in preserving this president who is striving against immense difficulties to repair at least some of the catastrophic damage to Western interests caused by G W Bush.

Lately it seems a few SPAM messages have been popping up on Alternet discussion boards. Sometimes they are outright spam; other times they are a copy of someone else's legitimate post with a few SPAM links inserted. Some of these posts have contained links to sites containing malware, as determined by McAffee Site Advisor. Please let's all help keep this place clean and safe by reporting these posts.

The trouble with reporting inappropriate posts is, often the CAPTCHA device gives false positives. That is, it says you typed in the wrong letters when you typed in the right ones. This can get very frustrating and discourage people from reporting inappropriate posts.

Here's a few things that may help. If your login isn't current, the CAPTCHA will say your input is incorrect no matter how many times you try and how careful you are. Before reporting an inappropriate post, give it a rating. This will force the system to make sure your login is current. (If it isn't, you will have to log in again.)

Even so, the CAPTCHA may give a false positive. If this happens, and your login is current, ask for a new set of letters. Often the third time is the charm.

Also, when reporting an inappropriate post, copy and paste the offending post into the comment section of the reporting form.

Sometimes it seems it takes a while for Alternet to respond to these reports and I think maybe they wait till a post has been reported several times before they take action.

Note: I don't report posts simply because I disagree with them; however, I do report posts containing spam, hate speech, and threats. In my opinion, inappropriate posts are like litter. When people see trashy grounds they are more likely to drop trash also until the whole place is a mess. On the other hand, it's good karma to pick up trash that others have dropped, and dispose of it properly.

I have no interest in appeasing these American Born Taliban and AQ members who lurk in our townhalls and our Churches. They are Traitors and Satanist
Heres a lil' hint- If you threaten to kill the Pres- you are a Traitor, a heretic and a psychopath.
If you want to secceed- You are welcome to- but you are still a Traitor. And heretic since you claim we are a 'Christian nation'- You are Denying the Belief in either
If you call yourself a Soldier of 'God ' or 'Christ' - you are lying about whom you really serve. Satan is the one who requires soldiers and Armies- not God and certainly not Christ
so Call me a 'Socialist' and I will expose you as both an enemy of this Country and servant of the Devil!

Maybe if he kept at least one campaign promise, and didn't REWARD the jerks that caused the financial fiasco, but rather put them where they belong, same with bush, covering his butt, isn't what Americans want. We're still waiting for change. If the man isn't smart enough to know, we're tired of getting screwed, then it's time to step.

during Watergate, a relative sent a one word telegram to Nixon, "Resign". The FBI was on his doorstep within 24 hours. How things have changed.

Even conservatives do not know who the latest racists are and think Obama is being picked on, whoever they are.

This minister that openly and clearly stated he'd like Obama dead should be arrested. And his flock should have gotten up and walked out. Any minister who preaches hate should be kicked out of the church.
Why the hell isn't the media focusing on this idiot?

We cannot allow funding problems to weaken the organizations charged with protecting the life of our nation's president.

In 2003, the Secret Service and FBI became part of the Department of Homeland Security and now must compete with 20 other agencies for oversight from their chief, Janet Napolitano. She must use her authority to ensure that the Secret Service and FBI put more agents on the ground to шрифты дизайнерам шрифты для word the vampire diaries subs the vampire diaries subtitles district 9 субтитры 90210 season 2 90210 subtitles инструкции к мобильным телефонам nokia 3120 classic: инструкция к мобильному телефону the big bang theory субтитры дженерал дайнэмикс f-16 «файтинг фалкон» f-16 «файтинг фалкон» субтитры к сериалам субтитры к шоу supernatural сезон 5 субтитры supernatural субтитры seropol5 protect Obama and confront and investigate those who threaten him.
