On last night’s Daily Show, Jon Stewart interviewed GOP New Jersey governor Chris Christie. The conversation started out slow and good-natured, with some jokes about the their shared love of Bruce Springsteen and a discussion of how their state is faring post-Sandy.

But then the interview got more interesting. At the end of part one (the first video below), Stewart called out Christie for all of a sudden being kind towards Obama in the aftermath of the storm. “What does that tell you about the game?” Stewart asked. “It tells me that people have different skillsets at different times,” was Christie’s answer. It was met with laughs from the audience and the host. “So he wasn’t a leader until you needed leadership?”

In parts two and three of the interview, Stewart and Christie got into much meatier topics, like Obamacare, and the philosophy of the entire Republican party – for which Stewart didn’t cut him any slack. As Michael Grynbaum at the New York Times put it, whatever good will Christie had been getting from the left for his temporary embrace of President Obama, “that flirtation seemed to be unofficially declared over.”
