The North Carolina GOP Precinct Chair, Don Yelton, has resigned following a controversial interview that aired on Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show” this week in which he told correspondent Aasif Mandvi that he’s in favor of North Carolina’s controversial voter ID laws because "if it hurts a bunch of lazy blacks that want the government to give them everything, so be it."
Following the interview, which went viral on Wednesday, Claude Pope, chairman of N.C Republican party called for Yelton's resignation, Business Insider reported.
“Yes, he has resigned. The party had asked for Don Yelton's resignation in direct response to the interview,” a GOP spokesperson told Business Insider.
Moreover the GOP Party said in a statement that Yelton’s comments were “offensive, uniformed, and unacceptable of any member within the Republican Party and in no way are his comments representative of the local or state Republican Party”.
