In yet another gun tragedy involving young children, a 4-year-old boy has shot and killed his 6-year-old sister in Kentucky.

The children were at their grandparents' house when the accident occurred. Their grandfather told reporters that he'd been cleaning his .38 caliber handgun, according to WSMV. He says he stepped away for a moment, thinking the weapon was unloaded. The 4-year old then apparently picked up the gun and pointed it at his sister, shooting her in the mouth and lodging a bullet in her spine, according to WSMV. ( h/t Raw Story).

This comes on the heels of another gun incident that ended in death for a young child. On Sunday morning, a five-year-old girl in New Orleans shot herself and died. Her mother, 28-year-old Laderika Smith, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder because of the incident, according to the Times-Picayune.

The five-year-old was locked inside a bedroom while her mother went to a store. The child found Smith’s gun inside the home, and shot herself by accident.

The deaths of the two young kids in New Orleans and Kentucky add to an already grim tally of child deaths by firearm. Since the Newtown massacre at an elementary school last December, at least 111 children have been killed by guns, according to Slate. From 1999-2010, about 800 children under the age of 14 were killed in gun accidents, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
