Airport Gunman Who Killed Five in Florida Is Identified—Was Carrying Military ID

The gunman was identified as Esteban Santiago, a 26-year old from New Jersey.

Five people were killed and eight wounded Inside the baggage claim of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport early Friday afternoon. Paramedics and armored police rushed to the scene as passengers fled the tarmac. According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, about an hour after the incident occurred, a suspect was identified and in custody.

Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer was an eyewitness to the shooting.

"I'm at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. Shots have been fired. Everyone is running," he tweeted, minutes before giving an update on police stopping passengers from leaving the building. 

The gunman was identified as Esteban Santiago, a 26-year old from New Jersey. Wearing a Star Wars t-shirt, Santiago had entered the Terminal 2 baggage claim area with handgun and a military ID, although according to Florida Senator Bill Nelson it was not clear if the ID belonged to Santiago
