Ad That Inspired #McConnelling Could Violate Campaign Finance Laws

Last week, Daily Show host Jon Stewart introduced the world to #McConneling: a made-for-Twitter campaign encouraging people to put their own choices of music to a recent political ad made by Senator Mitch McConnell.  The ad is just bunch of images of McConnell smiling, and Stewart made hilarious fun of them by putting his own soundtrack to them.

The Kentucky Republican has since said he finds it funny.  “You've got to be able to do that in this business," McConnell said Monday. "It's nice to have some fun occasionally."

Now, #McConneling has taken a serious turn.   Talking Points Memo’s Daniel Strauss reports that the ad that inspired Stewart may skirt on the edge of breaking campaign finance laws barring cooperation between political campaigns and Super PACS.

“Observers speculated that the ad was really meant for pro-McConnell super PACs to use. It is illegal for those organizations to coordinate with the campaigns,” writes Strauss.  

Democrats may have also posted b-roll footage that ended up in campaign ads.
