'Inglourious Basterds': If You Survive the Boring Parts of Quentin Tarantino's New Film, It's Actually Really Good

By Eileen Jones, eXiled Online. Posted August 29, 2009.

It's all eye-poppingly impressive, and the relentlessness of it will still make you want it to stop as you head deep into hour three.

When I heard Quentin Tarantino was making a Dirty Dozen-like action film set in WWII, I groaned in spirit. With all the amazing eras and dazzling historical figures and slaughterhouse horrors not yet represented in cinema, we're going to visit the Third Reich again? Really? Tarantino-ized Nazis? As they used to say in the old WWII gas-rationing ads, Is This Trip Necessary?

But it turns out to be a pretty interesting film.

That is, if you're already genuinely interested in film, your interest will sustain you during the long, slow, boring, unmoving-camera parts in the middle. If you're not really interested in film, i.e., its history and formal aspects and so on, I'm not sure what you'll think about when the tough-slogging sequences get underway. Seriously, there's a tavern scene that runs so long you begin to feel a slight edge of panic, as if you're in a Twilight Zone episode and are condemned to die in the theater watching uniformed Nazis eternally bantering over drinks at small tables.

tavernbasterds_wideweb__470x3030

There's a relentlessly repeated scenario in the film: an urbane Nazi observes all the social niceties while interrogating an anxious potential victim/enemy of the Reich. You wait for the revelation of the iron fist beneath the velvet glove. If you don't think that's a promising scenario, this ain't the movie for you, because you're going to see it enacted, with innumerable variations, about ten times.

I don't mean to sound dismissive, because for people who really like film, there's no easy way to dismiss Tarantino. He's too good. I say that with some uneasiness, but it's true; technically, stylistically, Tarantino and the creative teams he assembles, they can kick almost anybody's ass. Beautiful, beautiful work. The shot compositions in the first sequence are so lovely, so effective, I felt the tears come to my eyes.

And I know, smart boy, Sergio Leone gets a lot of credit for those compositions. But really, that Tarantino's-just-a-thief charge has always been silly. The question—in most arts and above all in filmmaking—isn't whether or not you're stealing, because of course you are. The question is, what can you do with what you've stolen, and as erratic as Tarantino is, by now he's proven he can make excellent, highly inventive use of stolen goods.

Supposedly the project started as a neo-spaghetti Western, and there's plenty of trace evidence left. The most publicized aspect of the film involves Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) leading his band of "Apaches," vengeful Jewish soldiers ordered to collect literal Nazi scalps, through occupied France.

(Why didn't he go with the real Apaches? Incredible fighters, Geronimo, Cochise, and what a story, whether to cut a deal with the whites or go down to inevitable defeat knifing whites all the way! Now that's a film, and nobody's tried it since that pacifist Jimmy Stewart thing in the ‘50s! Argh, anyway…)

inglourious-basterds-review

The Nazi-scalping storyline intertwines with other "chapters" involving Jewish girl Shosanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent), who's the lone survivor of the opening-sequence massacre, and German film star Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Unger) secretly working for the Allies. Bedeviling them all is SS officer Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), aka "The Jew Hunter," whose humorous, mincing precision and blank-eyed cruelty has every critic in the world hunting for new superlatives to throw at Waltz, an obscure actor who'll now have a big international career.

What's next--a film about a hyperactive film maker who plagiarizes other film makers shots and plots and so on ad infinitum? Will Quentin play himself? Can we see animatronic cameos of Hitchcock in a scene with Truffaut, who plays D.W. Griffith in a bathtub scene with William Wyler and Frank Capra, while Cecil B. DeMille in drag dances with Woody Allen as George Cukor and John Ford discuss how Howard Hawks should have done a remake of Stanley Kubrick's films?

Yeah that would do it, that would do it! Greenlight it, Quentin.

Wasn't QT a clerk in a video store? (Same as Soderbergh?)

They both should still be behind their respective counters.

Rewriting History

I am reminded of the pictures you always see on memorial day in the Washington Post of a military cemetery somewhere in Europe. It is a low angle picture of showing a star of David marker front and center, and then there are hundreds of crosses behind that star of David. Way in the background you'll actually see a few the Muslim crescents. Jewish soldiers played an extremely minuscule part in the WWII and it is a disservice to the memory of millions by a Jewish owned Hollywood to be rewriting history like this.

Most pro-Zionist or pro-Jewish propaganda is by omission. Some Jews have been some of the finest crooks and racketeers in history, but you will never see them staring in a movie like "The Sting" You will never see them betray a friend either.

Why We All Should Skip a Movie Like This . . .
Posted by: ed winbradley on Aug 29, 2009 3:12 PM

With citizens of this country sitting apathetically by while Obama's soldiers and his Blackwater mercenaries shoot civilians at will on every continent, and with Obama's geek-boy drone drivers ripping babies and old people to smoldering shreds through video screens, the last thing we need is to stuff ourselves in the metroplex watching a movie that glorifies ruthless American military force.

That the Nazis are such safe villains is exactly why it poses such a moral hazard for us.

Set this very same movie in "AfPak" of Bagdad, change the Nazis to Pashtun or Iraqi nationals and then think about the joy of murder again. As hard as it sounds, there's an argument to be made that US forces are the Nazis of this era.

ANTI-GERMANISM BY PRO-SEMITISM
Posted by: Malcus Garvey on Aug 29, 2009 8:43 PM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
It was reported last year that this was going to be a record year for the Jewish movie industry, denigrating and subhumanizing German people (under the guise of anti-Hitlerism, Nazism). Instead, the Semites have made me concoct a new word: "NaZionism." Notice the first four letters.

If the Jews hadn't UNREPARATEDLY enslaved and murdered millions of Blacks, God wouldn't have perpetuated the holocaust upon them. Their Wrath was the J. holocaust.

Invading and going into another people's land and then not leaving [town] when they tell you, is grounds to be holocausted. Where are the movies of the slavemasters? The North American slavemasters were the greatest killers the earth has ever seen. Still, the Jews show no movies or dishonorable mentions of their Ethnocidal endeavors.

Save the J. holocaust for the bloodsucking of donations; the Black Holocaust will be the worlds' next apocalypse; life=-ending meteorite.

waving his finger as he listens to a diabolic plot unfold in Mel Brook's cowboy comedy masterpiece. Perfectly funny, but very telling.

Jewish inundate ceases to be funny when it's incessantly self-serving, an agenda rich aggrandizement that's subtle like a hand grenade and it comes always at the remarkably arrogant expense of others.

Unforgiven:'dont mess w/zohan' another exhausting, selfish example of hollywood exporting messages and myths that creates universal resentment.

When bad is choreographed to appear good and good is fashioned to appear bad, you're near a tipping point.

INGLORIOUS BS

Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The movie stank and so did this absurd review of it. Tarantino's crock is just glorified torture porn by mindless Americans against mindless robot Nazis that could just as well translate to helpless Iraqis (1 million plus dead civilians so far) Afghans, etc, at the so-called "war on terror" that is no better than genocide for Big Oil and banker blood cash.

Nobody ever asks who put Hitler and his Nazi paranoids into cash and carry power when Germany was on its knees after WW I. As in: where did the money come from to build the German war machine? It came from American and U.K. Fascists. Where else?

All the Anti-Semites fear criticism of Nazis who they seem to believe deserve their adulation...

Most of the above posters who criticize the movie not only fail to understand it but also seem to not be able to stand any portrayal of Nazis in a negative light. They bray on like so many donkeys about anti-german this and anti-Muslim that but don't get the point of the film. They are so anti-Jewish that any portrayal of Nazis in a negative light makes them furious with anger. And yet they strain to convince us that they are only anti-zionist and not anti-Jewish. What a laugh!! They are obvious hate mongers.

Tarantino is quite independant and would never make a film simply to glorify Jews or zionism. Tarantino's style is sarcastic and filled with dark humor; he likes to mock and twist reality to achieve various artistic effects. Many critics have described it as a "black comedy" in the sense that it's violence and situations are absurd in the extreme and not at all meant to be taken seriously. To see it as "Jewish propaganda" is the very height of idiocy.

"I and Love and You"

Load the car and write the note.
Grab your bag and grab your coat.
Tell the ones that need to know.
We are headed north.

One foot in and one foot back.
But it don’t pay to live like that.
So I cut the ties and I jumped the track.
For never to return.

Ahh Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in.
Are you aware the shape I’m in?
My hands they shake, my head it spins.
Ahh Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in.

When at first I learned to speak.
I used all my words to fight.
With him and her and you and me.
Ahh, but it's just a waste of time.
Yeah it’s such a waste of time.

That woman she’s got eyes that shine.
Like a pair of stolen polished dimes.
She asked to dance I said it’s fine.
I’ll see you in the morning time.
Ahh Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in.
Are you aware the shape I’m in?
My hands they shake, my head it spins.
Ahh Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in.

Three words that became hard to say.
I and Love and You.
What you were than I am today.
Look at the things I do.

Ahh Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in.
Are you aware the shape I’m in?
My hands they shake, my head it spins.
Ahh Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in.

Ahh Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in.
Are you aware the shape I’m in?
My hands they shake, my head it spins.
Ahh Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in.

Dumbed down and numbed by time and age.
You’re dreams that catch the world the cage.
The highway sets the travelers stage.
All exits look the same.

Three words that became hard to say.
I and Love and You.
I and Love and You.
I and Love and You.

Three words that became hard to say....

I and Love and You............

cheap PROPAGANDA for INGLORIOUS PROPAGANDISTS
Posted by: PointMan on Aug 30, 2009 5:11 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Of course, forced camp relocations and wartime slaying of Jews was an abomination. But so was the murder of many countless millions of others.

To those that say “It was just a movie” ? Your opinion is as deadbeat as this dreck propaganda film.

Any way you slice it Jews were a small minority of combatants during WW2.

The same cannot be said of those that financed Hitler and his paranoid German war machine. There were plenty of very wealthy Jews that bankrolled Hilter’s regime to power including the American and German based Warburgs that Hitler later turned against. (The Openheimer banking family stayed with Hitler throughout the war). The "holocaust" and "holocaust revisionists" are another issue since there is some legitimate debate about the number of Jews purposely killed in "death camps" and exactly how this was done (well known scholars have been jailed for simply pointing out obvious science based flaws in the “historical” record). Either way the number of Jews killed has steadily been revised down (way down in some revisionist circles) from the 6 million figure.

There are also non-Zionist Jews that are quite vocal about how Israel and Jewish financial and media interests profit off the so-called “Holocaust Industry” . A label created “by Norman G. Finkelstein, who argues that the American Jewish establishment exploits the memory of the Nazi Holocaust for political and financial gain, as well as to further the interests of Israel. According to Finkelstein, this "Holocaust industry" has corrupted Jewish culture and the authentic memory of the Holocaust. Finkelstein's parents were both Holocaust survivors who had been inmates of concentration camps.” (quote Wikepedia on “The Holocaust Industry”).

Obviously a good deal of that “American Jewish establishment” are in key positions of power within the so-called Hollywood and corporate media propaganda class:

How Jewish is Hollywood?

“I have never been so upset by a poll in my life. Only 22% of Americans now believe "the movie and television industries are pretty much run by Jews," down from nearly 50% in 1964. The Anti-Defamation League, which released the poll results last month, sees in these numbers a victory against stereotyping. Actually, it just shows how dumb America has gotten. Jews totally run Hollywood The Jews are so dominant, I had to scour the trades to come up with six Gentiles in high positions at entertainment companies. When I called them to talk about their incredible advancement, five of them refused to talk to me, apparently out of fear of insulting Jews. The sixth, AMC President Charlie Collier, turned out to be Jewish.” (author of this L.A. Times piece is Jewish – Joel Stein).

Hollywood is even more Jewish than Obama’s inner circle where Rahm Emmanuel (brother to Ari Emmanuel as the most powerful agent in Hollywood) runs Obama’s white house with Tim Geithner, Larry Summers, etc, most of which are Robert Rubin / Henry Kissinger protégés and David Rockefeller allies.

Taken together with Jewish historian Shlomo Sand’s revelations about the bogus Zionist propaganda claim for an Israel land grab, the FACTS do not paint a flattering picture of Jewish entitlement let alone supremacy. Quite the reverse, at least politically.

FACT: the only Muslim nation that was officially an Axis power allied with Hitler during WW 2 was Iraq and that was for a grand total of one year (1941).

Oh… and before you start in with the mindless “anti-Semite” accusations, I happen to be Jewish. So – to “Yellow” and other daffy mindsets: you can save your BS NeoCon and cult Marxist loony-toon rants.

I am sorely tested to heap any platitudes on this movie. It was a painfully executed movie that, in the end STILL resulted in another all-too predictable Tarantino blood bath. It failed on every level. If he wanted to "make a movie about movies" why stage it in a ridiculous story with actual historical figures and then violate every fact of history?e.g., Hitler and the rest of the Nazi high command didn't perish in a cinema fire.

If i want to watch a slow-going movie artfully executed, i'll watch Tarkovski or Kurasawa. Tarantino was woefully out of his depth here.

UTTER HUMBUG AND TRASH!!!

I’m sorry (actually: no I’m not!) but I consider Tarantino to be one of the most pretentious and downright obnoxious directors going. He, even, surpasses Spike Lee, who, at least, is able to turn out the occasional decent movie.

Way-back-when, everybody was raving about this “brilliant” new director’s movie, “Reservoir Dogs”. I rented it and, even though it included actors I, generally, enjoy, I was left scratching my head and figuring that I was probably just too dense to “get it”.

Now, as a wiser man, I know better: there's absolutely nothing to "get"!

Well, I suffered through a couple more of his ridiculous movies and, now, I have come to a point where, if I know that Tarantino is involved, I will scrupulously avoid renting ANYTHING that idiot touches…because I deeply resent wasting a couple of hours of my Life over garbage.

If anyone was ever self-indulgent to the point of cinematic masturbation, it’s Tarantino!

He is one of those grossly overrated and under-talented jerks who must know that this is true…but, still, laughs all the way to the bank. The man obviously knows no shame…

…and all I can say to those who think that he is this brilliant “auteur” is this:

SUCKER!!!

(Better you than me!)

Jeez, you people need to seriously chill out! This movie is no more Jewish anti-German Propaganda than "Raiders of the Lost Ark". And please keep the anti-Obama rants to the politics section. Good lord! Do you people even know how to have a good time, or has political hysteria COMPLETELY overtaken your lives? Have any of you even seen this movie?
True, "Inglourious Basterds" is not for all tastes. It does tend to pander to the movie geek, but it is still a very enjoyable piece of fiction. It is so completely over-the-top that you would have to be a complete imbecile to mistake it for a true story. There is an element of "Jewish fantasy" to it - visual wish fulfillment, but who wouldn't get a kick out of seeing the heads of the Nazi party get the bloody end they so deserved? Ultimately, though, this movie is a cartoon. An extremely well made, highly enjoyable cartoon.
Some of you need to lighten the hell up.
