The Lee Atwater Story: Meet the Man Responsible for Karl Rove and the GOP's Hate-Driven Politics

By Isaac Fitzgerald, AlterNet. Posted October 16, 2008.

A new documentary by Stefan Forbes shows the origins of the GOP's playbook -- the manual of scare tactics on which McCain's campaign is based.

"Rovian." That's the way many people are describing McCain's current presidential campaign. Although Karl Rove officially holds no place among McCain's staff, it is known that he is still in close contact with the campaign, especially his protégé and McCain adviser Steve Schmidt (whom the New York Times credits with some of the campaign's most headline-grabbing moves, including the infamous Paris Hilton Britney Spears ad). But to describe the manipulation, prejudice, fearmongering and undertone of racism found in McCain's current campaign as "Rovian" is to have a short memory. As director Stefan Forbes reminds us, the GOP playbook that we are all too familiar with today was written more than 20 years ago by an ambitious young man from the South named Lee Atwater.

Forbes' "Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story" is a magnificent documentary that focuses on Atwater, a horrible but fascinating character. From Atwater's quick rise in the College Republicans during the time of Nixon, through his years in the Reagan White House, to the height of his political career as George H.W. Bush's '88 campaign manager and head of the RNC, Forbes shows how negative campaigning, manipulating the media and flat-out lying seemed to come as easy to Lee Atwater as picking his beloved blues guitar.

But "Boogie Man" isn't just about the bloodthirsty win-at-all-costs side of Atwater. Forbes does an incredible job of highlighting the undercurrents of Atwater's life and times that helped shape him as a person as well as a political powerhouse, such as his upbringing in the South with its deep scars and racial tensions, the childhood loss of his brother, the excess and uber-ambitious attitudes of the '80s, and, perhaps most importantly, his charm. Liberal journalist Eric Alterman, despite all of his distaste for Atwater's negative style, describes Lee Atwater as "the most fun man I ever met," and with the amount of film that Forbes has of Atwater singing, playing guitar and generally having a good time, it shows.

But even with all his charisma, it's hard not to watch "Boogie Man" without focusing on the fact that if there hadn't been an Atwater, George H.W. Bush or even Ronald Reagan may never have been elected. Karl Rove would not be the power player he is today, and George W. Bush (who became friends with Atwater during his father's presidential campaign) wouldn't have learned the worst lesson in politics: winning at all costs. This is the lesson that is Atwater's legacy, shown by many of the stories from those interviewed who were left much worse off for being on the wrong side of Atwater's insidious politics (the most interesting of these being Mike Dukakis ... Willie Horton, anyone?).

Forbes tells Atwater's whole story, ending with the sudden illness that led to Atwater's death at the young age of 40, and the supposed remorse that he felt about the undignified way that he had affected politics. Remorseful or not, Atwater had an influence that can be seen in modern politics today, and it looks like many of his tactics are here to stay. Take the time to learn about the man who took dirty politics to a whole new level, and the next time you hear someone describe McCain's current campaign as "Rovian," correct them. It is "Atwateresque."

"Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story" opens this Friday, October 17 at the Opera Plaza Cinema, 601 Van Ness Avenue, in San Francisco.

One of the best articles ever written about Karl Rove’s campaign strategy
Posted by: NoMcCainPalin on Oct 16, 2008 1:39 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
was published on December 1, 2003, by Time magazine. I urge serious pundits and political scientists to read it.

Here are three extracts from the piece titled, “Love Him, Hate Him,” by John F. Dickinson and Karen Tumult

If Ronald Reagan was the Great Communicator, Bush is proving to be the Great Polarizer. Reagan and then Bill Clinton ushered in the modern age of the acrimoniously divided electorate, but George Bush has cleaved the nation into two tenaciously opposed camps even more than his predecessors. He is the man about whom Americans feel little ambivalence. People tend to love him or hate him without any complicating shades of gray.

Karl Rove carries in his briefcase a laminated card to help remind him of the central dynamic of the 2004 election. It shows five neat bar graphs for each presidential election since 1988 and last year's midterm election. Republicans are in red, Democrats are in blue, and between them a shrinking wedge of green shows the independent voter, a segment that has diminished with each contest.

It is clear that in his quest for a second term, Bush is seeking to be the beneficiary of an America separated into two opposing camps. By default or design, the Democrats are mirroring this tactic. It’s an ancient strategy: divide and conquer.

Attwater's Legacy
Posted by: Tom Degan on Oct 16, 2008 1:52 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Lee Attwater is the grandfather of the modern day political playbook. No one is more responsible for the career of Karl Rove than old Lee. Twenty years ago, he was able to make a light-weight like George H.W. Bush the first incumbant vice-president since Martin van Bueren to be elected president. That takes talent, to be sure.

But what a legacy he's left behind. Our national political conversation has been polluted by the likes of Lee Attwater - and Karl Rove. Ultimately, he did irreparable harm to this country. In the end, Attwater himself understood this.

Pariahs that they are, they win and what does that say about the feckless Dipocrits that cower in fear of being their latest victim. All looks good for Obamarama today, but it looked good for Carter, Dukakis, Gore and Kerry as well, only to wrench defeat from the jaws of victory on election day. Will 2008 be any different? I sure as hell hope so but the major media still have not bought it and the necons are furiously attacking ACORN and other voter registration projects while whipping up the rednecks, racists and evangelical-based morons. Quare: are there more voters with half a brain in their heads than the opposing dung heap? We'll see, but if the Dipocrits don't win 60 seats in the Senate [Lieberman excluded] and at least a 150 majority in the House, it won't matter who the next President is because "it's the economy stupid" is going to reign supreme indefinitely and require tenacious progressive leadership in the legislative branch to overcome voodoo economics and neocon war games. I don't see such leadership there or elsewhere..but I can dream, can't I....although fitfully at that.

All U Need Be, is a Person of Color

All you need be, is a Person of Color to Understand the Tactic's of A Lee Atwater & Karl Rove. White Americans has STAINED this country since its establishment, therefore MOST, if not all Native Indians, Blacks, Latio's, Hispanics, Chinese & Japanese HAVE suffered at the hands of Rich White, to INCLUDE other Class of White folks who have PRACTICED Racism & Discrimination ... STILL to this day, as we observe the Presidential Primary of Barack Obama!

How White folks STILL drink the Kool-aid, is just unbelievable. Apparently, it took almost 8 years of White Man's GREED, to wake up many racist white folks; and STILL some would rather eat dirt, than give a Person of Color an opportunity!

How many, can consider, these Negative Ads, the LIES, how many People have sold their souls to support these EVIL DOER'S, to win and DESTROY our Country, BRILLANT TACTIC'S, is just disgusting! I don't see anything Smart or Intellectual in what they've done, I believe its just down right STUPIDITY on Americans part for drinking the Kool-aid, in helping bring America to its Knees!

I sure hope the heck, the MILLIONS of Americans who voted for Bush, 2 terms, are "HAPPY NOW," that they won, and the Rest of us, "Should get Over it!

Welcome, We KNEW this was coming, you guys were TOO STUPID, GULLIBLE, EVIL, GREEDY, & SELFISH, then again, WANTED America to become another 3rd World Country! Now, We're truly, "ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!"

Lee Atwater et al have been successful because MSM
Posted by: PakiBoy on Oct 16, 2008 5:58 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
knowingly peddled the smear.

Case in point:

1. Ayers association with Obama has received a lot more coverage in MSM.

But hardly any coverage has been given to Todd Palin's membership in secessiont Alaska Independence Party. And no mention of Governor Palin's video-taped address to AIP's convention.

2. Pastor problem
Rev. Wright's good name has been smeared because a black had the audacity to condemn America for perpetrating well-documented violence around the world and against minorities at home.

Yet, hardly any coverage to Falwell's, Graham's, Hagee's condemnation of America and Americans for 9/11, Katrina.

Also, hardly any mention in MSM of Palin's witch-doctor Pastor.

What Lee Atwater did was to severely polarize this country along lines that have yet to be erased! The politics of fear has led to the tyranny of the majority by a few greedy, powerful, and thoroughly corrupt minority! In the meantime the list of issues that this country needs to confront is getting longer! That McShame is allowing those same tactics to be used on Obama are not only despicable, but lowers any respect that I might have once had for the man!

As for Rove, karma is a beast (maybe he should remember Atwater did pass away young) so he should take heed. Maybe Atwater did come to repent what he did, but it really was too little too late!

There's a blues song rattling along about Lee Attwatter(sp). One line goes, "He's the man who wanted to be BB King...". Yeah, Lee would be BB King & I'm Arlo Guthrie too. Blues put downs can be subtle; but they sting like a toast or rap from the Dozens, kind of like a moonshine hangover. Lee would be BB King but he became Ike Turner. Life & paybacks can be a b!tch.

Legitimizing The Devil...WSJ and FOX
Posted by: Sannity on Oct 16, 2008 9:38 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I don't understand why anyone would give Rove a legitimate forum to further poison the toxic political atmosphere he, more than any single individual, is responsible for. An atheist, he used religion to bludgeon the slumbering pious and haughty holy rollers into the contorted notion that Bush was receiving his orders directly from some god.
Stepson of a homosexual he made certain to include non-issue gay marriages onto ballots in states where "low information voters" would get off their keesters and rush, in fear, to vote, assumably against them thar lib'rals and their godless agenda.
Don't for an instance think Rove wasn't or isn't behind the downright undemocratic disenfranchising of minority voters through illegal means and intimidation, the Orwellian perversion of our very language to sell the covetousness of the few as being good for all, to disparage a real decorated Vietnam Veteren over the coddled rich son of a CIA agent who, not only obtained a soft spot to hide in (over those who were already in line, some of whom may have met their end in that conflict), but didn't even fulfill the paltry duties assigned him.
Rove politicized the Justice Department to the Just Us Club, invented the Lewis Carrol Looking Glass ignoring of subpoenas and "signing statements" that cartoonishly wish away the very Constitution itself and the jailing of Governors merely because they were in his way.
I understand what the WSJ and FOX are all about, they, like CNBC, are populated by drunks and wanna-bes who've been smarmy cheerleaders for the tinkle-on economics and the Wall St. Ponzi scheme that has brought us to this point. I'll admit I enjoyed the panic on the faces and in the words of these snarky sycophants when they were begging the hoi polloi they've been ripping off to pass the huge con of giving them money that hasn't even been printed. Sadly, they pulled it off despite the fact that an overwhelming majority of middle/working class citizens were against it, and lo, here we are losing money before it's made.
Why would anyone show respect for an unelected and unelectable cynic who has, after all, brought us the most obtuse and least curious "leader" in our history? Where, pray tell, do the WSJ and FOX think this is headed? And how could you possibly see any benefit in the awakening and angering of the populace?
A guillotine in every county!

Lee Atwater died, supposedly repentent, but before he went, as was his fashion, he trained at least two acolytes (how many more ? little is known) who would then go on to expand his dirtry work empire to the point of corrupting our political scene nearly beyond recovery. And the media fed on it merrily and gleefully trumpeting it at max volume - - but rarely condemning it. The two worst among the Atwater's "boys" are Karl Rove (identified and discussed in the article), and Roger Ailes the thoroughly dishonest and aggressive boss of Rupert Murdoch's Fox (fake) News.
But very few among the general public know the identities of other well trained Atwater & Rove "proteges" who have been operating at full steam for nearly as long as Rove has been in his business of destroying our political lives and his own Republican Party along with the rest.
An article ("Boys' Night Out: 'The Politico Guys'. Rove's Top Disciple and how our press corps works") in SALON.COM, OCt. 12, identifies
two of them:
Tim Griffin, now a US Attorney thanks to a Rove plot and extensive program of dirty work to replace the legitimate US Attorney with Rove's boy.
Jonathan Martin is the other. He now works for the "Politico" website as a blogger and who knows what else after a very interesting career of Rovian skulduggery. Whether he has ceased political hit jobs and dirty work is extremely doubtful. I'll betcha he's still at it under the cover of "legitimate' commentator.
The Salon article also cites a documentary by Greg Palast that exposes much more regarding the Rove/Griffin caper.
How many more are out there ? Who knows ? Our political system has been infected by a cadre of criminal goons masquerading as all sorts of "legitimate" political operatives. You can bet the lobbyist community is well represented with Rove 's boys.
The reason for their proliferation is that media commentators and reporters (and editors and publishers ?) just love these guys because they are so impressed with how "with it", cnfident, cool, and "savvy" they are about the political scene around DC. I have heard and seen and least one commentator nearly swoon and express her admiration for Karl Rove openly on TV; namely, Gloria Borger. She has toned down lately now that Rove is under the watchful eye of Congressional committees. But the amateurs and career seekers among the media, especially in the capital, haven't yet caught on to their folly. If the "Rovian" virus has spread, it is largely the fault of the DC press corps and media who have fallen in love with a con man who has so easily and thoroughly bamboozled them.

Atwater, a dead colonist

There was nothing charming about Atwater thrusting himself into performances by black musicians. Rather it was pure colonialism. When he appeared on stage to perform with blues & rhythm & blues artists he was capitalizing on their contributions to society, claiming them as his own. He manipulated these concerts to cover his own racism and to show his disregard for the dignity of black culture. His pitiful blues album was the ultimate robbery of artists whose popularity was gained through low-paying gigs, constant harassment by cops & grueling tours that reminded them at every turn this arrogance was poison. It shouted out from signs that read "whites only". I was jubilant when Atwater died young & find the resurgence of "colorful" stories about him deplorable, especially when we have Rove carrying on his legacy of colonialism by trying to rap.

While Republicans are busy stirring up racism, fear, and hate in an attempt to salvage McCain's campaign, they're alienating more and more minority citizens (plus millions of white voters who believe in tolerance and in not judging a person by the color of their skin). In not too many years, minorities will outnumber Caucasians, so then what? Maybe their party will disintegrate into the dustbin of history. That's where it deserves to go.

I can still remember the stench of the 1988 campaign. However, nothing succeeds like success, and if something is successful you don't make apologies. That was the Republicans mantra back in the 80's, and the disease that started then has affected every campaign since.

I talk to too many young people who are disgusted with BushII and Rove. I tell them that "you need to study your history" and realize that these two guys had a "John the Baptist" in this slimey snake Atwater. And what really got me about the guy was his folksy "aw shucks" manner, hiding a vicious and predatory temprement. If a wolf could sing like a canary to attract a sheep, it would do it.

Lee Atwater drove the politics of race during his working hours and hung out with black musicians during his down time. He is a perfect example of the irony of racism in America. The black musicians who allowed him to play with them, such as BB King, are a perfect example of why blacks need to be more politically involved and educated. Would BB King allow George Wallace to jam with him in the mid-60s, I doubt it? I'm sure he was ignorant of Atwater's "work". And if he wasn't he should burn in hell along with Atwater.

Sorry to barge in on the little leftie lovefest here, but liberal democrats have been using "Atwater" tactics since forever. Remember the Johnson ad against Goldwater with the little girl plucking petals off the flower and then the giant mushroom cloud behind her? Kind of forgot about that one? Scared the hell out of people at the time, and it worked. This kind of stuff has been going on since the beginning of time, and certainly since the inception of American politics. Why don't you winners grow a set, man up, and quitcher cryin' like a bunch of babies. Waaaaaaa!!
