Fox News On-Air Racism Challenged by Huge Petition Drive and Hot Rapper Nas

By Don Hazen, AlterNet. Posted July 24, 2008.

A rally outside Fox News headquarters led by Color of Change delivers 620,000 signatures.

At a rally of a couple hundred people in front of Fox News headquarters on Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan, Andre Banks told the crowd: "We're here to call out Fox News on their pattern of on-air racism that is trying to make the Obama's outsiders in their own country. But it won't work. Many people think Fox is a joke. But putting racism on national TV and calling it news isn't funny."

Banks, who is Deputy Director of The Color of Change, a grassroots organization dedicated to advocating for progressive issues on the web, stood next to 19 stacked cardboard boxes. The number 620,127 was taped to the side of each box, representing the number of petition signatures gathered. The petition demanded that network president Roger Ailes "find a solution to address racial stereotyping and hate-mongering before it hits the airwaves."

Soon after Banks spoke, he was joined by popular performer Nas, who pulled up in his black SUV, and jumped out to address the crowd. Everyone with a camera flocked around the veteran rapper to get a shot of him.

Nas offered his own critique of Fox in what he sees as their long-term racist smear campaign against the Obama family. He mentioned Bill O'Reilly casually using the phrase "lynching party" to refer to attacks on the Senator's wife, and another Fox host's reference to the Obama couple's fist thump as a "terrorist fist jab." Said Nas, "Fox poisons this country every time they air racist propaganda and try to call it news. This should outrage every American that Fox uses hateful language to talk about the person that may be the first black president."

(You can watch a video of Nas and the protest on the right side of the screen.)

Banks explained that Nas's new album has a song called "Sly Fox," which offers a stinging critique of Fox News. (see rap lyrics below) When the Color of Change's Organizers realized they and Nas were saying the same things, they reached out to Nas to work together on the campaign.

AlterNet asked Banks for his take on the the specifics of the Fox behavior. "There are many instances, but one in particular that denigrated the Obama family made many readers angry, Fox put up images of Obama and their children and then referred to Michelle Obama as Baby Mama -- a term that is considered derogatory, and generally refers to young, unwed mothers of children," explained Banks.

The Color of Change organizing campaign against Fox clearly struck a chord. Joined by MoveOn and Brave New Films, the online petition spread around the web like wildfire, resulting in thousands of new members for each of the organizations. According to reports, Fox rejected the petitions, but Brave New Films, one of the organizers with Color of Change and MoveOn.org said that Comedy Central's Colbert Report agreed to accept them instead, and made them a feature of his show on Wednesday night.

Selected lyrics from "Sly Fox" by Nas:

It's sly Fox, cyclops
We locked in an idiot box
The video slots broadcasting
Waco Dividian plots
They own YouTube, MySpace
When this ignorant shit going to stop?
They monopolize and lose your views
And the channel you choose

What's a fox characteristic?
Slick shit, sins in, misinformation
Pimp the station, over-stimulation
Reception, deception
Comcast digital Satan
The Fox has a bushy tale
And Bush tells lies and foxtrots
So, I don't know what's real (what's real)

Watch what you're watching
Fox keeps feeding us toxins
Stop sleeping
Start thinking outside of the box
And unplugged from the Matrix stopped you
But watch what you say, Fox Fire is watching

Only fox that I loved was the red one
Only black man that Fox love is
in jail or a dead one

Digg!

Enough of these haters. They are sickening. And they don't provide much intelligent discussion either. I've heard O'Rielly defend torture and oppose any media exposure of it. He is a real pig. Hopefully the Obama era will sweep these assholes from public view.

. . . just don't succumb to their talking points. If you're going to make the argument that mainstream America does not (or cannot) appreciate hip-hop culture (which should be a no-brainer) then you cannot allow them to force you to fit into their "Will Smith standard" of acceptable lyrical content.

That's simply not the way hip-hop works, and any attempt on their part to marginalize you by scrutinizing your lyrics simply reinforces that fact that they do not or cannot understand.

It's great that Nas put out a song about fox news' bigotry, but musically it is a disappointment and does not live up to Nas' standards.

AlterNet racists cry racism yet again

Why do you so called progressives question that this man is a sexist or a racist? You publish racist articles on this site then have the gall to question the character of others only to further a political agenda. What about the racism of your writers such as Gary Brecher and his slanderous and hate filled article ‘The Taliban Strikes Back’? You should clean your own house before you point so many fingers, crying racism.

If this site and its publishers had a sense of decency or professionalism they would at least remove racist articles from the front page before posting new ones about the racist or sexist character of others. Maybe even be decent enough to offer an apology or some explanation why it was deemed appropriate to publish hate filled articles. I have seen to much hypocrisy on this site and am disgusted enough that I do not intend to ever return to read another racist and repulsive article or a piece questioning the character of others written by ignorant racists. One has to question the reliability of anything published by sponsors editors and writers of such an entity.

O'Reilly is part of the rightwing GOP that will do anything to defeat Obama
Posted by: HughScott on Jul 24, 2008 11:55 AM

I just watched Senator Obama give his powerful, awe-inspiring Berlin speech. Can any freedom-loving American not agree that he should be our 44th president?

The racists in our society, encouraged by biased Fox News commentators like Bill O'Reilly, believe otherwise. In their bigoted minds, no matter how much mud McCain slings -- and this goes for prejudiced Democrats as well -- the more, the better.

Consider McCain's latest anti-Obama mantra -- that Barack "would rather lose a war than lose an election." Incredibly, the former POW nicknamed "Songbird" for collaborating with his North Vietnamese captors had the audacity to suggest Obama was a traitor.

This is just the beginning, folks. Standby for the dirtiest GOP campaign in U.S. political history. If you think John McBush won't not use the worst tricks in Karl Rove's playbook, think again. Short of assassination, the PNAC Gang and other Republican neocons will do anything to stay in power.

Facing a torrent of rightwing smears, the ONLY way Obama can win in November is by making Senator Clinton his vice presidential candidate. And I have NEVER been a Hillary fan.

well, I'm sure no one on here watches O'Reilly or anyone else on Fox.. but...I do... Here's my take..

OReilly is pretty even in attacking both sides but doesnt like the far left basically for it's anti American stance 9/11 conspiracy nuts etc..etc...I dont like them either. He has jumped all over Bush, conservatives, liberals and just about anyone else.

Hannity - another story..hard core rightwing and I find it hard to side with him on his takes on many issues, on some I do side with him. Colmes is just as looney on the left - together its an interesting show and balanced..more than one can say for most other news shows. Ever sit and try to watch Olbermann.. now there is a show that should be protested if there ever was one!

I find it pretty funny that Obama was involved in the most controversal racist/hate issues this year and these people are complaining about Fox..

I wonder if they ever got petitions to toss Wright out of that church.. somehow I doubt it.

Obama might be a racist but he has had the political sense to squash that preception.. his wife on the other hand is a racist.. let them attack her as they're attacking Fox then maybe they might have some credibility - after all, that racist will be sitting in the whitehouse along side her hubby.. unless he can find an extended special mission for her! - how about a "first lady" on a mars trip! What great PR - racisism is taken to new heights!

Those who disrespectfully disagree. I mean those who do that but who also are not me. Damn! This is harder than I thought. Anyway, I actually enjoy it when right-wing idiots like Billo the Clown do what they do best, which is make fools of themselves. Besides, most of Billo's audience has that thrill of rediscovery every time he comes on, since most of his audience are dementia patients. Think of all those poor old folks who think he's the sexiest thing on TV. Think about how you'd rather have them in front of Fox "News" instead of in front of you on the freeway. I only live to bring sunshine into your lives. Now let's all work together to bring sunshine to Apollo Braun's life.

I will never get it. All the derogatory things said about Sen Obama before even the Iowa primary and Fox News gets the blame. The "Un-Civil War" is still evident in the Democrat Party however once again Fox News gets the blame. Someone at Fox needs to call DipSet, Cam'Ron and Jim Jones to take care of Nas.

hip hop is not dead, it lives in the South!

While its easy to point out the obvious with Fox, the solution must start in the hood were blacks are hurting themselves. If NAS or any other artist can get thousands of signatures to protest FOX, then perhaps he can take that same platform and protest the so-called thugs and drug dealers that plague inner city neighborhoods.

FOX or any other network will not respect us or this protest until we respect ourselves. Enough of the whining.

Let's Remove Fox News From Our Local Cable Lineup

If we can get enough signatures in local regions, we can begin to remove Fox News from the cable line up. The question is - where do we begin? Santa Monica? Manhattan? Where are we most likely to be able to win local battles that erode the ad revenue that feeds the beast?

620,000 petitions are great. But why not also send 620,000 complaints to the FCC who regulate broadcast media and who's own rules prohibit bias and racism in news broadcasts.

FCC COMPLAINT FORM ONLINE

Hear bias or racism on FOX, File a complaint. Flood FCC with these and see if FOX can refuse those complaints.

Although they can't promise to stop calling Barack Obama Barack Osama as long as there is a shortage of the letter B in the world.

because they have a common enemy. But if either Nas or Color of Changed challenged them on their stand regarding illegal immigration, neither would be heard from again. That is the power of White privilage as practiced by supposedly progressive people.
