SNL's Take on the Election Is Better Than Most News Coverage

By Carol Jenkins, Women's Media Center. Posted February 28, 2008.

As Tim Russert showed in Tuesday's debate, the mainstream media seems to think it's the third candidate in the Democratic presidential race.

It was perhaps surprising to hear a presidential candidate reference the irreverent comedy workhorse, Saturday Night Live, in a nationally televised debate -- but for those who've been tracking Hillary Clinton's sometimes rough handling by the media, it made sense for her to bring it up in Tuesday's debate.

This past Saturday's SNL show (blessedly back, thanks to the end of the writers' strike) had a couple of hilarious skits: one portraying swooning CNN correspondents in the last debate asking Barack Obama a tough question: Was he comfortable? Did he need a pillow? -- while attacking Clinton. The other, a "Women's News" segment with guest host Tina Fey using the "B" word liberally and proudly, in defense of Clinton, closing with the shout that "B ... is the new black!" -- or totally chic.

The show recognized what many observers had come to feel: that the media has conducted itself poorly and are worthy of parody. And watching Tim Russert, parodying himself in Tuesday night's debate, scowling eyebrows, raised voice, blustery manner and slightly weird questions -- encapsulated what's wrong with the media. Tim seemed to have the mistaken belief that he was the third debater, an impression only heightened after the debate when Chris Matthews repeatedly lauded Russert on "reeling in" Hillary Clinton with a question on her war vote. Increasingly the media has become the story -- and not such a complimentary one. While the "serious" reporters and pundits were this morning condescending of Clinton's mention of the comedy show, SNL's take on the coverage seems at least as informative as what shows up on nightly cable shows.

Hillary Clinton and her supporters believe she has been unfairly covered. Howard Wolfson, Clinton's press secretary complained bitterly this week: "I think it is true, that every time the Obama campaign in this campaign has attacked Senator Clinton in the worst kind of personal ways, attacked her veracity, attacked her credibility, said that she would say or do anything to get elected, the press has largely applauded him."

This past weekend, the drumbeat of reporters who began to agree with them, if only slightly, grew louder. Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz, on his weekly CNN show Reliable Sources, tackled the subject and concluded that Clinton had grounds to complain, that there was indeed at least the impression of a "pro-Obama press corp." He was not alone: "There is a gathering sense in the media that Obama has gotten something of a free ride," Howard Fineman of Newsweek and MSNBC conceded, then went on: "But, fair or not, it is still up to the Clinton campaign to slow that train's momentum before it is too late, which it almost is."

Yet recognizing that a bias exists does little to correct the problem. Interestingly, NBC, the network that carried the debate on its cable outlet MSNBC Tuesday night, is a media petrie dish worthy of years of scientific study. The Women's Media Center has commended NBC for its groundbreaking weeklong coverage of African American women on Nightly News. NBC is also the home of Saturday Night Live, of course.

But MSNBC is also the home of Chris Matthews, David Shuster, and formerly Don Imus, the infamous bad boys of television who have all had to apologize for sexist remarks: Matthews for asserting Clinton's political career was made possible only because her husband cheated on her; Shuster for claiming Clinton was "pimping out" her daughter by using her in the campaign. In fact, it was Shuster's comments that briefly jeopardized last night's debate. Clinton threatened to boycott. Shuster took a two- week suspension and was back on the air last night to report on the debate. The relationship between the Clinton camp and MSNBC talent is described as "a grudge match."

In the run-up to the Tuesday debate, we watched Chris, Tucker, Keith, and Chris again, then Tim with Brian Williams (the only one of the evening, by the way, to come off looking journalistic.) What was wrong with this picture? As the Women's Media Center has pointed out before, and to NBC executives personally, we believe the absence of women in this prime time line-up does a disservice to viewers -- and to the information process. And knowing the history of line-crossing, it's hard not to read disdain on their faces as they describe Hillary Clinton.

The Women's Media Center submitted a series of questions to both NBC and CNN for the last two debates, including one about stemming the epidemic of violence against women. A little less personal grandstanding, and more thoughtfulness, might have allowed an opening for at least one new question for both candidates to answer.

But the media's problems are not confined to NBC, nor are they purely of sexism, or even the absence of women. The news profession is suffering from a more fundamental sickness that needs an immediate cure. The media needs to step back into its role of gathering the facts, doing the exhaustive research, and reporting to the citizens of this country what they need to know.

Digg!

The press is a joke, a very bad joke but one nevertheless.

Hillary, as much as we would like her to be unassailable as a politician, certainly has created her own problems via her contradictory voting record, as well as her dismal failure to sell much needed reforms in healthcare.

Obama is a darling now to many due to his intelligence, persona and yes, race. It doesn't hurt that there's not a deep history of political and personal controversy dangling around his neck like so many flawed pearls.

Small wonder then, that with Hillary in self-destruct, the cowardly, co-opted and confused members of the so-called "press", jump like the rats that they are to a more buoyant and likely heir to the throne.

If Obama can run the country half as well as his campaign, happy days are here again!

I can't name a single GOP pundit that HASN'T fawned over the man while simultaneously skewering Hillary. Not a single one. And I WATCH.

It's blatantly clear to anyone who isn't in ObamaNation, that the Rove pick for the candidate to run against from the very beginning has been Obama. Rove knew that if Hillary got even 51% of the vote of women in this country, she would completely obliterate ANY GOP canddiate, and so the fix was in; find a way to peel off her black support and her female support, and they didn't have to look far.

Hillary's been vetted; run through the wringer. NOTHING the GOP lie machine could do FOR 20 YEARS could ever stick. Anyone that thinks Obama has been subject to this grinder yet is a fool. The second the man secures the nomination (should it unfortunately and horrifically ocurr) the GOP will be pulling Larry Sinclair AND OTHER downlow boyfriends and paid off crack dealers out of the woodwork so fast ObamaNation won't know what hit them. With innuendo alone on top of a few actual revelations that will utterly destroy all hope of a Democratic Presidency and an end to the war, just as Rove planned from the very beginning.

I cannot tell you how tired I am of living in a country of fools, chasing Rove's piss running down the drain like a dog dying of thirst.

While the rest of us stand with bottles of water in OUR hands, screaming at the fools.

Thank you SNL and Tina Fey for screaming at the fools; maybe some will listen. MAYBE.

I don't understand Wolfson's problem (other than his choice of candidate) for Hillary is the worst kind of person. Obama is telling the truth about Clinton and her actions have proven him right. She is a liar, lacks credibility and will say anything to get elected. What was not mentioned was she will also DO anything to get elected even if it destroys the democratic party. As a leader she is incompetent; If she can't unify her paid minions what the hell would she do with a split/hostile congress? Given more advantages than any other candidate she has managed to not take advantage of any of them. The press is observing and reporting, they are not creating, the story. Did Wolfson think no one was paying attention to the flaws and inconsistencies in his candidate until they were reported in the press? These cretins belong together.

Does it not bother you that the press gave the same free pass with fawning media to George W. Bush during his campaign and for the first term of his presidency? The media is definitely not doing their job in this campaign. My opinion of all media continues to sink lower and lower.

Comedians have a freedom to point to events and people of the day that journalists and mainstream media do not have. Seriously!

Given this freedom, they are able to expose aspects of the story in a non-partisan way. If they find something that will garner a laugh, it goes in the lineup.

In Canada, we have The Mercer Report, 22 Minutes and Air Farce who, more frequently than often, nail a story better than any of the mainstream media, even the becoming increasingly conservative CBC.

They do a great job of commenting on American politics and media in addition to lampooning our homegrown variety.

Black Hillary Supporters May Be Receiving Death Threats

By Marc Sheppard

There's mounting evidence that at least some of Obama's faithful intend to see a black American president sworn in next year -- no matter what it takes.

Earlier this month, popular black author and talk-show host Tavis Smiley disclosed death threats he'd received from those accusing him of blasphemy against their black prophet. Then, at Saturday's Smiley-hosted State of the Black Union forum, Congressional Black Caucus member Stephanie Tubbs Jones lent credence to Smiley's claim by suggesting that many black elected officials not swearing allegiance to Obama have also been the target of violent threats.

While widely ignored by the mainstream media, the implications here are nothing short of momentous. The very prospect of physical intimidation as a means of garnering political compliance from Americans awakens frightening images of the thuggish antics of one William M "Boss" Tweed in mid-nineteenth century New York. Having survived the 2000 election debacle without even the threat of bloodshed, would some now have us back on the road to the iniquitous days of Tammany Hall?

Not surprisingly, no one in the black community has come forward with specific complaints. But here's what we do know.

For nine years running, Smiley has hosted the annual symposium of black college professors, politicians, activists, and entertainers during Black History Month discussing matters of concern to those whose heritage the month honors. This year, Barack Obama declined an invitation -- accepted by Clinton -- to address the panel of black dignitaries in New Orleans. The Illinois senator and presidential hopeful's unexpected rejection prompted a disappointed Smiley to blast the decision as a "major mistake," and that's when the trouble allegedly began.

The perceived racial apostasy apparently sparked not only thousands of angry emails labeling Smiley as a "hater, sellout and traitor," but also the relentless harassment of his entire family. And, while he has yet to elaborate, Smiley has also mentioned the matter of death threats - levied for the mere suggestion that the mighty Obama had somehow erred.

Needless to say, this newfound esteem wouldn't help sell standing room tickets to Saturday's historically well-attended seminar.

#########

And, while DC congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton spoke the requisite racial solidarity, Tubbs Jones revealed a true affinity for Clinton's sisterhood message, admitting that she had committed to Hillary's feminist positions and election some 15 years ago. That was, of course, long before anyone ever even considered a possible race/gender dilemma for black women

The Ohio Democrat spoke quite convincingly of sexism trumping racism and the need for women to finally shatter that immutable "glass ceiling." Listening to her passionately address women's issues and considering her voting record on such concerns as Child Health Insurance Programs, one could hardly question her Hillary decision. But then she spoke with equal earnest of a darker truth hanging over black Clinton supporters:

"There are some black elected officials who have earned their stripes, who've had to change their phone numbers two or three times because of the calls being made to them about the positions they are taking in this election. Shame on us. Shame on us. That we would beat down black elected officials who've paid their duty and their time.

Fox news, and talk radio

The fawning over Obama and the skewed coverage of Hillary is what the right perceived to have happened to GOP candidates for the last 50 years. This is *the* reason for the rise of conservative talk radio and Fox News and the general distrust of mainstream media. Much of the hatred for Bill Clinton is because the media was such a blatant cheerleader for him. And I think they have a point. The media does love Obama and they hate Hillary now (they didn't one year ago though). Frankly I can't see any real conservative getting the "Obama treatment", unless its McCain when he consistently sells-out his party and crosses the aisle, and even that only last as long as he's not up against a Democrat. The recent fiasco with Ny Times shows even McCain, who pandered to media for years, will be dropped by them as soon as its convenient.

So the crying that comes from Hillary supporters is kind of funny. Forty more years of this, and you'll finally know why talk radio is so popular.

Tim Russert and Stupid Questions
Posted by: LeeAnnG on Feb 28, 2008 12:24 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
There was a very good article today in the Huffington Post about the "debate" (and I use the word very loosely). It wasn't about the SNL skit, it was about the ridiculous questions Tim Russert asks.

The specific question addressed in the article was whether or not Obama accepts Louis Farrakan's support, and the point was made that he never asked Clinton, for example, if she accepts Ann Coulter's support. In addition, neither Obama or Clinton fired back at Russert asking him if he is happy that Rush Limbaugh is such a fan of his.

I have not been able to force myself to watch any large segments of the so-called debates ever since Russert asked Dennis Kucinich, in the most "OK, you are a nutjob and this proves it" terms, about his UFO sighting. From what I've seen, most of the debate dialogues and monologues are shallow, sniping, dancing-around-the-issues non-discussions.

Last night on The Daily Show, Jon had an author as a guest who has written a book about the Lincoln Douglas debates. Apparently there were seven of them, and they all were structured within three hours. I believe the time frames were that one debater got to talk for an hour and a half, followed by an hour of rebuttal by the second debater, and then another half hour from the first debater. There was no moderater, there were no questions to respond to.

Amazing. Now we have moronic questions followed by inane sound bites, a little bickering about the meaning of words like "renounce" as opposed to "reject," and accusations about whose campaign is the most negative and misleading.

Oh, and the Lincoln Douglas debates apparently focused entirely on the subject of slavery! Just imagine Obama and Clinton having a three hour, in-depth debate with no moderater about health care in which one spoke for 90 minutes, the next for 60 minutes, and then the first for another 30 minutes! It might actually be enlightening.

You know, for all the people I hear complaining about the MSM, most of what they're complaining about is TELEVISION news, which covers .2 % of all news out there, rarely ventures outside our borders unless it's a country we're currently bombing, and has talking heads with blown-up egos rather than trained reporters and writers.

I have seen far different treatment of the candidates in actual newspapers and magazines, which if a few of you ever decided to pick up and read, maybe you'd have a better opinion of the media.

Or sit back and stare into the tube while they tell you what to think, then get angry later. Whatever.

How shallow is the press?

The real question is how well does the press understand the issues that they write about. Thursday we had a perfect example of how little they actually understand.

The stock market tanked, the dollar plunged and gold and silver went ballistic. The main stream press blamed the usual subjects: meaningless government statistics showing low GDP growth. The REAL reason turned out to be a speech given by the former Fed chief "Easy Al" Greenspan at a Conference in Saudi Arabia. He told them if they wanted to stop importing inflation from America, they should lower the dollar peg. This is the kind of thing you may say in private, but NEVER in public. Lowering the dollar peg means dumping the dollar for other currencies and trashing the dollar. The dollar index crashed through 75. Precious metals and the stock market followed in tandem.

Where in the idiot brain dead main line press did you see this reported?

It would seem in her haste to defent a woman candidate at all costs, the author of this myopic article is picking on the wrong hypocrite.

As nasty as the media can be, usually the media gets mean when someone is perceived to stand on a hypocritical position, such as the media's famous turn against Nixon as Watergate unfolded.

Hillary Clinton's "stance" on the war has long been one of utter hypocrisy and even greater callousness towards the men, women and children of Iraq, who continue to suffer the horrific consequences of our wicked leaders voting ongoing funding for the most worthless war in human history, for the clear and present dangerous obvious reason of protecting their own political asses, regardless of the fallout to we the people of Planet Earth.

I say, "good for Russert", for finally catching Hillary where it matters--right in the hypocritical asshole she keeps talking out of.

I watched the SNL debate parody on line; it is the first SNL I've watched probably since Mike Myers. It was painful to watch. Bad writing, bad role playing. None of the comedians even seemed to try to get the vocal cadences of the characters they were supposedly lampooning. With all the brilliant political parody on four nights a week on Stewart and Colbert, this was tired and sad.

Now we have the "bad" media being too harsh on politicians. Yet the media took a hike when Bush was going to war with Iraq.

Hillary survived, Barak will get his "media treatment" eventually and he'll survive, but almost 4000 American soldiers and hundreds of thousand of Iraqis are dead.

I prefer an aggressive media relentlessly pursuing politicians and their policies. Maybe if they did their job in 2002/2003, a lot more people would be alive.

This is not news! This is the Clinton campaign's latest strategy. It's been cleverly written in the appropriate "AP Style," so that it seems like a news story.

The problem with the media (including Alternet) is that they're so lazy that they gobble this stuff up, rather than go out and find stories.

Clinton is winning the battle of redefining reality (Obama is just an empty voice, Clinton has experience, etc.). She's going to be nominated and the imbecile war hero (possibly the only person in America dumber than Bush) is going to beat her.

Why? She's appealing to the hawks, and he can outflank her on that score. AND, she's claiming to be the one with judgment and experience. All McCain has to do is call attention (around late-Octoberish) to the fact that her experience is that of being the wife of Bubba, and her judgment was to stay with him. Is this the person, he'll ask, that we want managing our relationships with our global economic and political adversaries?

Middle-aged white women are going to set us up for 8 more years of the status quo. Sorry, but you're being manipulated by clever old white men, to go for the symbol (and fail), instead of insisting on substance (and maybe succeed).
