Air America 2.0 Begins Today

By Mark Green, Huffington Post. Posted March 6, 2007.

Air America Radio has a new owner. Why? Because if progressive values were a stock, now is the time to buy.

Today my family formally purchases and takes over Air America Radio. Why? Because if progressive values were a stock, now is the time to buy.

That hasn't always been true, as the cycle of politics demonstrates. In recent decades, politics seems to have been governed by physics -- for every action, there's an opposite and equal reaction.

William F. Buckley Jr. started The National Review in the 1950s to rebut what he saw as the dominance of liberalism in the academy and opinion journals like The Nation and The New Republic. From 1970-72, Public Citizen, Common Cause and the NRDC were all created in reaction to Nixon's depredations. Similarly, People For the American Way grew out of the rise of the Religious Right under Reagan in the mid-80s.

New progressive think tanks over the past 10 years, most recently and prominently the Center for American Progress, were created to counter AEI and Heritage. And, of course, the Huffington Post and Air America were born in reaction to the electronic propaganda of Drudge and Limbaugh et. al.

Air America was a large, smart idea to counter the near-monopoly on talk radio by the far right. But like most start-ups, the business plan collided with reality. Six CEOs over its first three years -- and various missteps and misspending -- sent it into Chapter 11.

It's now ready to go from The Perils of Pauline to The Little Engine that Could. How? First, by focusing on the radio fundamentals of making a strong line-up even stronger; second, by connecting to other progressive membership organizations to be mutually fortifying; and third, by being a multi-media content company involving other distribution platforms -- Internet, blogging, audio and video streaming, mobile, social networks, and more. It's time to think outside the (radio) box.

The twin goals are to make it profitable and influential. One without the other won't work. If it's not a business, it'll go out of business.

But it'll be a business with a sharp point of view. The era of on-the-one-hand-on-the-other-hand liberalism is over -- or as Robert Frost once wrote, "a liberal man is too broad-minded to take his own side in a quarrel." For all those who worry about messianic misleaders governing on a right wing and a prayer, Air America 2.0 will be an answer. For all those fearful of plutocracy and theocracy, the pro-democracy hosts of AAR's programs will be an answer. If the conservative media continue to spout propaganda and call it news, there's now the alternative of truth, justice and the Air American way.

It's no longer enough just to hope that The New York Times will cover a rally or press release. The relatively new combination of The HuffingtonPost, AlterNet, Moveon, Center for American Progress and Campaign for America's Future, The Nation and The American Prospect, DailyKos and TalkingPointsMemo -- and so many labor unions -- means that Air America will be part of a larger progressive infrastructure heard by a widening audience. For if we can't grow and prosper now -- given the 110th Congress, given the unmitigated disaster that's Iraq, given a slew of top-quality presidential aspirants -- when will we?

classic revisionist tripe which will do little to further the revolution. We should not be adopting neo-fascist 'business' capitalistic tactics but hold true to the ideal and purity of the cause.

you can't listen to Air America on AM 1600 in Brooklyn without the Disney Radio AM 1560 signal bleeding into it, and the online streams don't work very well lately either. I used to count myself as an AA listener but not any more, what's the point of broadcasting if nobody can hear it?

I never understood why Air America chose to name itself after a CIA front business, but hey what do I know?

It is great news that the people who chose to fire Mike Malloy, a truly great American, are gone. The article makes some great promises, let's hope they can live up to them. The comments about the internet stream are right on, I don't listen anymore because they drop off all the time, and then the make me watch a stupid commercial just to reconnect. Capitalism at it's worst. My hope is the the new owners put a lot of focus on 911 Truth, people are starting to listen! And if they are really really really smart, they will put Mike back on!

AAR will need better hosts and better shows. Al Franken was tepid and often laconic. Randi Rhodes constantly interrupts herself, raises her pitch and volume to an irritating high squeek, interrupts and badgers her callers and generally froths when she should be speaking. You can be emphatic without sputtering and shouting. Jerry Springer was an unmitigated disaster; totally lost, unable to master the facts or keep the discussion on track and possessing an annoying voice and churlish sense of what passes for humor. I never heard Janeane Garofolo (always busy at that hour). Anyway, crankiness and 24 hour outrage isn't enough, especially when the voices are not particularly eloquent. It wears thin quickly. You'll need more laughs and more clever wordplay. We need to skewer them but maybe we should try a quick, sharp rapier vs. a blunt cutlass. You know, slay them before they feel the exit wound.

Let's be honest. The AAR audience/market is likely to be smarter than James Dobson or Rush Limbaugh's audience. So we don't need a Left-leaning equivalent, if there is such a thing.

There are lots of talented people out there, some with less radio experience than those mentioned above but much more articulate and hard-hitting. Maybe you need a farm league to get them ready for a national market. Work with your college and underground, local radio operators. I'd rather hear slightly goofy but smart kids, than a bunch of lumbering, aging liberal dinosaurs.

AAR should work, but only will with the right formula. Expect to spend a bundle getting it right. I'll keep tuning in if I can find you on the AM dial in my area (big if).

I personally had a problem with Mark Green, but this helps me warm up to him again. It has been hard to be black and like the guy. He seems to change when he's running for office. He becomes ... well ... ruthless. It's disturbing. So it is good to see him getting away from that aspect of politics and into something where he can do some good.

I've been a listener to AirAmerica since the first day it when on the air. I listened to it faulter and fall. Heard most of the glitches, the engineers banging as they stress to get back on the air. I personally think that this is all great because that let's me know that it is REAL. Which is something that is not found in media anymore.

It's been fun to listen to Rachel Maddow and Sam Seder (sp?) grow into politcal pundits and occationally see them on MSNBC. It's great to be armed with intellegent and funny things to say to the occational conservative idiot that I run into because I listen to these shows. Yes, Randi Rhodes can be obnoxous but that is what's so great about her. She doesn't pull any punches. Love her, hate her, she is what she is, and she telling you the truth as she sees it.

One thing that I hope will happen is that MORNING SEDITION COMES BACK with both Marc Marron AND Mark Riley. I miss this show SOOOOO much. It's been hard to be out here with all this hard stuff happening without my morning laugh. So look into that for me, huh, Mark? I'll be your friend forever!

It's not perfect, but at least Air America is still on the air. I like it least when it "bloviates". I love it when I learn something, which happens almost every day. I've heard some amazing interviews and been introduced to the growing array of bloggers who are holding the light of liberty high. Now, I not only listen while I commute, but I add a few websites to my daily diet of information. I barely even glance at the MSM. Thank you for keeping Air America going, and, I'm sure, growing.

Pseudo progressives like Ed Schultz. He tried to muscle in on the prime 12-3 slot and force out Al Franken and now Thom Hartmann, and then threw a temper tantrum about Hartmann getting the Noon spot instead of him having it to himself.

Hartmann is the real progressive here. Schultz tows the DLC line all the way and gets their mouthpieces for guests on a regular basis.

We need a concerted effort to get supposedly progressive radio stations, like my local WWRC 1260 am in DC, to carry most of the AAR lineup LIVE, to carry ENTIRE programs, to dump "Big Eddie", and to not run infomercials in prime drive-time. Instead of only playing an hour of Rachel Maddow, and two hours of Randi Rhodes tape delayed, and Thom Hartmann from 3-6pm, unless some college basketball game is on, how about a real, dependable, full-time progressive program line-up?

Gawd from reading the above posts I found myself thinking "this is why the Republicans keep on kicking our asses on election day ... we just like to bitch about everything and we fail to see the bigger strategic picture." Anyway, my Los Angeles local station just dumped Harrison on Edge, which was a great show; I'm currently pretty annoyed about that. BUT that doesn't mean I'm just gonna bitch around, throw a temper tantrum, and stop listening to the shows that I still enjoy like Stephanie Miller, Randi Rhodes, Thom Hartmann, and Ed Schultz. Nope. I'm gonna continue to be an Air America listener and proud to be so.

Wish List

In case Mr Green or someone else from AAR is looking in, may I make a few suggestions?
1- How about a weekend show with Amy Goodman, either a 1 hour in-depth interview show or a compendium of the week's events from DN coverage?
2- I think Phil Donohue could do wonderful things with a weekend show or a daily commentary.
3- If she would be amenable to it, Laura Flanders needs to be on daily in some form, either a daily commentary or a news wrap-up with commentary. Don't take away her weekend show- it's too good to lose- she just needs a better slot.
4- How about some kind of tie-in with the soon to launch IWT Real News project? It could make AAR's news coverage stand out and provide some very good material.
5- Mike Malloy needs to get back in the game on AAR. Maybe as a syndication offering or just a daily feature. However it can happen, his voice should be on your air.
6- AAR needs at least one show that has someone based in D.C. to keep a close eye on things inside the beltway. Who that should be, I don't know, but it needs to happen.
7- Laurie David, a frequent guest on many shows, has the ability to do well on an environmental/green show. She also has a good voice/presence on radio. Someone needs to sign her to host or contribute features/segments/whatever.
8- Overhaul the website for the network and get your affiliates to do the same. The audience you are targeting is very web savvy and needs a first-rate site to help extend the brand, coverage and give a good outlet on both sides of the mike.

Thanks for making the investment. With patience, solid investment and ingenuity, AAR can grow and fulfill it's promise.

Air America back ? I hope so...and better. Much better I also hope. Two comments: 1-How can you not have an outlet in the Boston MA area ? (The old AM station is now playing salsa music 24/7) 2- Please Please Please put yourselves on some FM stations so you can finally overpower some of the right wing nuts broadcasting there...( listen to 96.9 fm in Boston...you'll get the immediate nasty picture). I would like to listen again..but can't since there is no local outlet anymore...and I'm not very interested in a satellite radio... Locally they used to broadcast Stephanie Miller...very amusing and interesting..can you get her ? Also like Ed Shultz and found Al Franken more informative than funny...but that is not a bad thing...Tom Hartmann , when I can catch him, is great.

WMNF FM radio station isn't a "business." It is listener-supported, located in Tampa, FL and is commercial-free, and heavily left-leaning. It does podcasts so you can listen from just about anywhere. It carries national hitters like Amy Goodman et al. Over 10,000 of us lefties keep it going with volunteer help and donations. Screw business supported radio. Why settle when you can get the REAL THING!

Bring back Mike!

As an avid AA listener, let me make a couple of suggestions. PLEASE bring back Mike Malloy. He was the first and only host that ever got me fired up enough to actually pick up the phone, and beyond that - get ACTIVE about making a change. Second, why is Thom Hartman on the streamer from 12-3, but Ed Schultz on XM? For the past couple of days, Ed has subjected us to the "big" constroversy of illegal downloading - this while Walter Reed was hitting the news really hard. From Ed's rhetoric, he also sounds like a right winger as far as attacking Iran goes, echoing the "they want to blow Israel off the face of the earth" nonsense. He wastes my time, and his #5 rating aside, I'd rather hear Hartmann.

Now for you that complain about the weak AA signal, if you're getting Alternet, you can get Air America. Just go to http://www.airamericaradio.com and hit the listen live link. It's free, unless you want to join the Premium thing, where you can get archives. Bottom line, we need programming like Air America, and glad that somebody stepped in to put their money where their mouth is.

AAR had some great talent at the start that is now gone, and not by the talent's choice. Bring back Marc Maron (he does great arts coverage, and great political commentary at the same time, and is a funny, funny man whether he has his old straight man Mark Riley to play off of or not.) And bring back Mike Malloy (who, in anger, can wake me up better than a double shot of Foglifter.)

Is it possible that AAR could syndicate some of its shows? That way regions without an AAR affiliate might still be able to hear some of the shows on the radio rather than having to download them or listen to them via the computer (which some of us simply can't do...at work I have no sound capability and that's where I am when most of the shows I listen to are on.)

And could you please look into discontinuing the "premium" deal? Yes, it lets people who don't live in an area with an AAR affiliate listen to the shows if they have a computer to download them to. But the expense is unreasonable and makes it look--both to the listeners and to the world at large--like the network is trying to fleece its listeners. I'm sure that wasn't the intent. That doesn't change the appearance.

With all that in mind, I have to say THANK DOG that AAR is still alive and kicking. And thanks for keeping it on the air for us.

On satellite radio I can hear Air America and "America Right" if I choose, but listen to neither because I realized they're basically the SAME - different sides of the same business party coin.

Listen to the commercials and you'll hear the SAME ADVERTISERS on BOTH NETWORKS.

Want to buy gold? Want to go deeper into debt? (even ALTERNET, with all these corporate banner ads, is just clicks away from deeper consumer debt). Whether your divided by the cultural engineers into "left" or "right" there's still a get rich investment "tip" or other interest-bearing product that's right for you!

Today's divisive rants on America Right and Air America that undermine our national unity are (big surprise) brought to you but the same advertisers - the European-owned "Federal Reserve" system and it's inner circle of leeches and lenders.

Want progressive thought? Turn off corporate radio and TV, and THINK FOR YOURSELF.

I have XM radio and would like to support the negative comments on Ed Schultz. I just surmised he was a DLC advocate...one can tell very easily and I miss Al Franken who is no flaming liberal but his mentor is Paul Wellstone which was enough for me. I do enjoy Randi and Rachael even though some people don't appreciate Randi...she minces no words in her critique of the corrupt bush regime.
Thom Hartmann would be such an improvement over Schultz

Tired of waiting for the news people to catch up

I listened to Air America since it started and for about a year until I tired of the monotonous same old same old about Republicans.
I feel that, when the moderators and reports on political news outlets like Air America (and Democracy Now) fail to advance beyond the crowd on many important core issues of the day; such as the 911 bipartisan coverup, the bipartisan chemtrail/HAARP project, the bipartisan NATO/ NAFTA /NWO and the bipartisan support for the Federal Reserve bankster/Arms dealers, their failure turns them, subsequently, into gatekeepers on these topics.
If the new Air America continues to practice this kind of "politically correct almost renegade" control over content, I will leave it behind again, I don't have the patience for it.
As a result, I mostly listen to the GCN2 network where Dr. Jim Fetzer, Kevin Barrett, Alex Jones among others discuss the news of the day without side stepping or holding back "conspiracy theories". http://www.gcnlive.com/listenlive.htm
I also recommend Taking Aim with Ralph Schoenman and Mya Shone. http://takingaimradio.com/ from that great radio station WBAI in NYC http://www.wbai.org/

I have acquaintances on the right who contend that Air America's business failure is a sign of the left's weakness. I've asserted that that's not true. Because I just don't listen to commercial radio! If I had to listen to it, sure, I'd take Franken, Ed Schutlz, etc., over Limbaugh, o'lielly, etc. But I don't listen to either of them. I just hate being accosted by ads ever few minutes, even for Dr. Phil and his band of quacks!

I'm not opposed to Air America, certainly. Whether it should take up the corporate model remains to be seen. But if it does or not, I'm still not likely to listen to it much, unless I'm, say, stuck in a car with nothing but a radio.

That doesn't make me less left, nor is it a sign that the left is weak. It's just that I--and many I know--don't listen to it because it's commercial radio.

pretend-Revolutionary spew like this makes me think of agent-provocateurs. If you use this language you will alienate the majority of Americans. Then you have to seize power with a revolutionary cadre who will turn out to be as bloodthirsty as the regime being replaced. Reform is what actually make the lives of the working people better. Revolutions generally make their lives worse. Just look at history. I applaud Air America at least they arte trying to correct the Right -wing slant of our public discourse.

PLEASE approach Phil Donahue about hosting a daily program. His is a brilliant true liberal who has a huge built-in audience base, having kept women informed about themselves and the world for decades. He's an eloquent and informed speaker who can make points without the hysterics of some AAR hosts.

Also, Shultz has to go. He's a Transformer ( a Republican in Democrat disguise ), a cheap imitation Limbaugh, and most uninteresting to listen to.

I am a resident of upstate (Vichy) New York and the same fate
befell the local 'progressive' station here as was the case around the Country. I don't really have a problem with any of the suggestions in the prior 'wish' post(s). BUT...like many of the Alternet readership,I am somewhat involved with keeping abreast of news/current events 24/7/365Y. :O) DN , NPR, Malloy,Seder, Rhodes, Flanders, Hartmann etc.,etc....I have followed them all and am thoroughly familiar with their styles and shortcomings. One thing is abundantly clear :The comp-
lete absence of aggressive, well informed combative (if need be) Black and more broadly POC journalist/show hosts. The issues are replete with Black/minority involvement implicitly and/or explicitly; plainly an all white broadcast staff is well
just plain F'n Nuts!! With the exception of Mark Riley's 'rushed' hour broadcast ithe dead of night or the crack of dawn....there is no Black presence on Air America. NPR's involvement with tepid and (I think) essentially misguided and misguiding Juan Williams doesn't even merit comment as a serious attempt to give voice to aggressive, incisive and relentless Black intell-
gence best suited to portray issues in the communities that
gave birth to them.

I have been in broadcasting for years. I have been a member of AFTRA since 1968.

Seems to me the AA station in Los Angeles, KTLK has a split personality. At night it often runs hockey games. On the weekends it runs annoying infomercials. KTLK should be all Air America all the time, even if it has to rerun programs. That's the way to establish a loyal audience. KTLK picks up some good programming, some from AA and some from the Jones Radio Net. But the comment above about inviting in Amy Goodman is good. And Donahue. Why not?

In response to previous writer, I didn't realize how much I disliked the web site until he mentioned it in his list of suggestions. Actually, I think it is representative of one of AAR's ongoing problems: it lacks professional polish. I believe the progressive community must have professionals who would donate the hours necessary to turn AAR into a formidable power...have we not resorted to begging? Flattery? Wine, women and song? Yes, the on air talent is important, and we all have our favorites, but frankly things like the frequent disconnects when streaming, and the irritating commercials when trying to reconnect (for those of us who can only access AAR online) are going to do this format in, long before the talent.

In all Air America's history I have never been able to receive it. I live in the Raleigh part of the big, fast growing Research Triangle (NC) media market but AA was heard only on a very weak Chapel Hill station that didn't reach 25 miles to Raleigh. I and many more would listen a lot if you had a signal here--are there any plans by the Greens to broaden AA radio's reach?

For AA 2.0 to succeed it must remember that democracy
uses a small "d" and that big "D" is used in Democratic Party.
The two words have the same root, but that's as far as it goes.
AA 1.0 preached the Weapon of Mass Deception that our salvation was to be found in the "D"emocratic Party. AA 2.0
will go the way of AA 1.0 if it does not learn this lesson.

AAR needs improvement

After firing Mike Malloy — which I will believe to my dying day was for anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian comments — I stopped listening to AAR for the most part, even though I was with them from day one.

Most of the shows became tedious. Franken is a neo-lib, Rhodes' voice peels paint (unless you really, really like Fran Dresher), Mark Marin is a jerk and Seder, while intelligent and a true liberal, is a lousy host. Thom Hartmann has the Constitution down, but is too much of a pussy and basically says the same thing over and over. I do miss Janeane. She was witty, thoroughly unprofessional, but fearless.

There are 3 shows still worth tuning in for: Ring of Fire, with RFK, Jr., Laura Flanders Radio Nation and the only pinko redneck with a radio hour, Steve Earle (buy the Revolution Starts Now and Jerusalem if you like real protest music).

Meanwhile, I listen to Malloy on NovaM Radio.

Whether Green can save AAR and bring in some real talent and make the network a serious threat to the Limbaughs and Limbaugh-wannabees of this world remains to be seen. My guess is no, he can't.

AAR is not perfect but it sure beats "the other side" hands down!

Do we really expect perfection in a commercial radio station? Strive for it, by all means, but if it is reached, know you have died. AAR provides a vital service to this country, and, I believe had much to do with effecting the turn of tide in this country with the resultant Nov election changeover. I dearly miss Mike Malloy and Mark Maron and request that they be brought back so many of us can feel better about AAR again and give grateful thanks for the work of the women, Laura, Janeanne, and Randi, my heroes. Ring of Fire, keep on burning. Sam, keep on churning.
Oh, and Mr, Green, thanks for buying AAR to keep it alive. You have my eternal gratitude.

I used to support Air America. But now you can kiss my ass. Until you bring back Mike Malloy. And get rid of those stupid Narcin-on commercials. My god!
