20 Reader Questions for CNN's President

By Rory O'Connor, AlterNet. Posted March 15, 2006.

We asked, you responded. Here are your questions for CNN.

AlterNet columnist Rory O'Connor sent 20 questions of his own to CNN President Jonathan Klein after Klein cancelled a sit-down interview. O'Connor then asked you, AlterNet's readers, to submit questions of your own, should Klein care to respond to his viewers and the public he's meant to serve. Here are 20 Reader Questions for CNN President Jonathan Klein:

1. Why does CNN so rarely interview liberals, especially those outside government, as part of its coverage of daily news?

2. Why are the vast majority of CNN's so-called terrorism experts retired military personnel or former government employees instead of academics or independent security consultants? Why does CNN think the former group is a good source of objective information?

3. Why do CNN news readers, such as Soledad O'Brien, become argumentative with those being interviewed and offer their (her) own opinions -- which just "happen" to be the administration's arguments or news bites? Or is this "demand" or "command" performance to keep their jobs? Do they know or care that, with disgust, we turn them off?

4. In the months before the war, where was the balance? Why did CNN not give, if not equal time, at least some time to informed critics such as Scott Ritter, Justin Raimondo, Ray McGovern, Noam Chomsky and Alexander Cockburn?

5. I really appreciated your CNN Presents special on how we got things so wrong before the war, and I thought you covered most things carefully. Now, however, we're hearing those same drumbeats from the same people who brought us the Iraq invasion. I'm speaking of the push for war with Iran... I really believe this was part of the plan which this administration brought with them when they took over the White House and they are certainly not going to let the reality of lack of military and money stop them from their chosen plan. But, are we going to respond like Charlie Brown and trust Lucy to hold the football again? I wish CNN would discuss this possibility and not simply allow the administration to blindly lead us into another war.

6. Kyra Phillips, Miles O'Brien, and Paula Zahn hawked the war against Iraq to the American public, going so far as to ridicule Scott Ritter in interviews in which he denied Iraq had WMDs, frequently beginning interviews with teasers such as "Is Scott Ritter a traitor?" How does CNN justify leaving the Silly Three in place as White House propagandizers at this point, knowing what we now know about Iraq and WMDs?

7. Why did CNN use patriotic artwork and military music to introduce segments about the invasion? Why weren't the segments introduced with black-draped somber artwork with dirges to depict the death of peace and democracy? Oh, you wouldn't do that, would you? That would be too slanted toward the peace movement. But patriotic artwork and military music, that isn't slanted? BU--SH--! Face it; those in charge of CNN wanted the invasion, because it would increase their profits, covering the military action and the subsequent loss of life, not to mention the controversy the long-term conflict would cause. All those in charge of CNN at the time that decision was made should be fired.

8. What do you folks at CNN gain by ignoring and/or colluding with this administration in its lying, conniving, and murderous law breaking? Don't you give a damn for the future of your kids and grandkids? Why is it necessary for Wolf Blitzer to suck up to power? Watching the Republic sliding into the toilet with the complicity of the mainstream media is not pleasant viewing.

9. Shouldn't your viewers see and know what war is about? Then they would not allow their money to be spent on such nonsense as political money wars!!

10. Why did it take the mainstream media almost 5 years to discover that this administration was lying from the very beginning??? I just get sick just thinking about all the unnecessary lives lost in this debacle. No one should send our children to war based on lies to die for nothing. Also, all the innocent lives of the Iraqi citizens that have been lost. "They" have blood on their hands.

11. Why won't you show us the war--and show us pictures of the bodies of our men [and women] as they are returned?

12. Wolf Blitzer may have indicated that his network was using jingoism and he should know. Even the occasional news that questioned what the president was saying was quickly followed up with Wolf asking a question like "Yes, but don't you think the Democrats need to be careful how they use this? After all, they don't want to seen as weak on defense especially after 9/11, and the president's soaring poll numbers should give them pause." Or how about Wolf talking up Bush and the war in an interview and then being asked about the failure to find any WMDs. Wolf shrugged his shoulders and said "sometimes they are wrong." And Soledad, Miles and Jack were on message for the WH with all their Liberal/French/Cheese-eating jokes. They were so funny (they thought) and I have not heard an apology about how wrong they were in their slavish support of Bush and their costly refusal to report anything of substance.

I was most interested in the 20 points to be presented to
the President of CNN. As a Canadian who receives much
of our world news from the USA I am very happy
to know a great many Americans feel the same way we do
regarding the slanted, bias, half truth reporting by CNN.
It is very obvious CNN has taken a dislike to Canada based
on your President's disagreement with our last Prime Minister.
CNN will not report on any news item that contains the word
Canada or Canadian. The latest example is the child
porn ring that was broken by Toronto Police and other
Canadian Police Services. The reporters went to great
lengths to avoid mentioning Canada's success in the case.
Sensationalism for profit not journalism for truth is CNN's
only mission. Reporting on news from other countries that
are not currently in favour of the present administration is
definately a no no.

Hold news people accountable

How about if we put news people on trial if they hawked the war in Iraq without question and without presenting a more balanced view before we got dragged (with their help) into this whole disgusting mess by Bush and friends? News people have become way too powerful in determining policy, through their biased coverage, and need to be held accountable for their part. Perhaps this would help them better realize their responsibilities.

I have been howling for months about these very same issues, thanks for taking the baton!

Chris Matthews & most of CNN are a bunch of Bushwhores. Did you know that the GOPmob actually floated a rumor that Scott Ritter was a child-molester? How disgraceful!!!

They are broadcasting on OUR airwaves, they do not own them. I would like to see two things happen to CNN:

1. Their license should be revoked.

2 The whole kitandkaboodle should be shipped off to Baghdad, so they can get some first-hand knowledge of the war in Iwreck.

How many of you out there would too?

It sickens me too much to listen to them, Lou Dobb, when he gets off the illegal immigrant mania, has some good moments.

Well, remember O'Reilled Up's favorite target, and the rest of the nutcakes of the Republican Noise Machine was CNN--too LIBERAL, ANTI-BUSH, ANTI-CHRISTIAN, ANTI-RELIGION and the old reliable ANTI-AMERICAN. So they got scared and became FOX-lite.

This tactic hasn't attracted or maintained their viewership, just the opposite!

Infotainer-in-Chief Jonathon Klein is the worst kind of anti-American, a media whore. If he weren't, he would not be able to sit in his ivory tower and blissfully watch the Republic sliding into the toilet. If he can't see it, he's really stupid; if he can see it and does nothing, he's evil. As the old saying goes, it's later than you think.

The Truth at Last

What a great article. It hit the nail on the head.

Do you remember the days when Ken Starr was out there with
his cloak and dagger? The Republicans went after Clinton like dogs after a fox. Everything was diagnosed and leaked and women were paid to come out of the woodwork.

And now...

When CNN should be out there doing thier job, they only talk about murders commited 20 years ago and other such trivia.
Why isn't Cindy Sheehan being interviewed?

It is so obvious to any intelligent person how CNN is handling this. So sad to see the people being lied to and mislead.
I guess the truth is not important anymore.

Where oh where has journalism gone?

I felt the 20 questions were realistic and fair.CNN truly is just another mouth piece for the goverment. Our leaders have forever scolded the foreign press for being a mouth piece for the evil regimes abroad. It is no longer an arguement for media abroad. It is clear that there is some 'deal" brokered with mainstream media and the Bush-Cheney destruction machine tearing our very democracy to shreds. And the message if you aren't for us then you're against us.That stuck here at home so if you spoke out against the regime you were branded, as I heard recently, an Al-Queda sympathizer. Question the war, you were unpatriotic. There are some journalist who would not quit and took a pounding in regard to their patriotism. FINALLY, those voices are making it through the junk journalism and see the incompetence. And I suspect The RepubliCONS of the Republican party will go back to what has worked for them....the will bang the fear drums and that only they can handle it.Where is the fiscal responsibility the Republicans stood for? The RepubliCONS have shut them up.How cana country believe the president so much as had a grasp on the horror on the GULF Coast. The corporate and individual corruption is destroying us. This rampant cronyism, this I can do as I please (Bush)and interpret the law as I please sickens me. But the press ,being blamed as the liberal press may have awakened many. Stories with right wing bias is the liberal press? "The greatest thing to fear is fear itself." FDR was correct and really correct in looking at this sorry bunch of divisive RepubliCONS. Well, even they ,with the regime's knowledge knows they have to distance themselves so they APPEAR as if they are now fighting for the people.Look for consistency. If they kissed George W. behind and now "dis" him , they are lying. The public needs to really ask why do we feel the Republicans will keep save and conduct the war better. We , under their, rule have been less safe than prior to 9/11. Our airports are not safer and our ports upon inspection are worse than ever. And this war, Bush is on tape stating 'we have no evidence Sadaam Hussein was involved in 9/11" No evidence except fabricated pictures were presented. This is 21st century "Ugly American" and faces are the corporatists and the incompetent president and incompetent cronyism holding high positions and 100% yes men and women. What happened to propagandists in Germany after the war? Were they addressed in any form of legal rebuke?

All valid questions and observations but does anyone seriously believe that CNN gives a ratsass. They will always be one of the last to do any serious reporting on the crimes of the political/corporate elite.

To Godwin or not to Goebbels err...Godwin

News Or Propaganda? That's the question.

Was Goebbels found guilty of war crimes at Nuremberg? If so, why? He was just the Propaganda Minister. All he did was take the words of the leader of his country and tell them to the people in a way that made them more palatable. He down-played the his leaders actions brought on the world while trumpeting any successes. If there were no successes, he'd blame them on the prez's political opponents. He changed the meaning of words. Union organizers became "communists". Food, health, human rights agencies all became traitors because they were "helping the enemies of our freedom". So what's the problem with that? It was his patriotic duty to do what he could to advance the goals of his Leader, right? Or does it matter that he knew about his leaders torture of others, waging war of aggression, and repeated violations of other international laws to numerous to mention?

Of course it does. So why aren't the people here and now who are behaving in the same way being arrested? For the same reason that Goebbels wasn't arrested by his leader.

So what can a citizen do about those persons who conspire with or otherwise aide and abet these crimes? You can't just leave them alone in the hopes that another nation will topple the leader and bring them to justice, because there is no nation capable of it this time.

If this leader declares martial law, then elections are no longer certain. The only possible hope is that we have another von Stauffenberg in our ranks. In the meantime, the "Little Goebbels" are in reach. They will only face justice if we do it ourselves. Imagine all the lives saved if Goebbels hadn't had time to sell PNAC to the American people....err... you know what I mean.

Just do it. History will surely thank those people who were able to see past 9/11 and realized that most wars around the world and all civil freedoms lost here since then were taken under Presidential Order..... not by OBL, not by Saddam Hussein. With action and a little luck now, we will never hear ourselves pleading to future generations that "We never knew! How could we?" like the Germans patriots of last century spent the rest of their lives doing.
