Rage Against the Killing of the Light

By Norman Solomon, AlterNet. Posted August 10, 2005.

Cindy Sheehan is bursting Bush's attempt to ignore America's war dead.

Mid-August 2005 may be remembered as a moment in U.S. history when the president could no longer get away with the media trick of solemnly patting death on its head.

Unreality is a hallmark of media coverage for war. Yet -- most of all -- war is about death and suffering. War makers thrive on abstractions. Their media successes depend on evasion.

President Bush has tried to keep the loved ones of America's war dead at middle distance, bathed in soft fuzzy light: close enough to exploit for media purposes, distant enough to insulate the commander in chief's persona from the intrusion of wartime mourning in America.

What's going on this week, outside the perimeter of the ranch-style White House in Crawford, is some reclamation of reality in public life. Cindy Sheehan has disrupted the media-scripted shadow play of falsity. And some other relatives of the ultimately sacrificed have been en route to the vigil in the dry hot Texas ditches now being subjected to enormous media attention a few miles from the vacationing president's accommodations.

At this point, Bush's spinners are desperate to divert the media spotlight from Sheehan. But other bereft mothers arriving in Crawford will hardly be more compatible with war-making myths.

Consider the perspective of Celeste Zappala, whose oldest son Sherwood Baker was a sergeant in the Pennsylvania National Guard when he died 16 months ago in Baghdad. She is a co-founder of Gold Star Families for Peace, and what she has to say is gut-wrenching and infuriating: "George Bush talks about caring about the troops who get killed in Iraq. Sherwood was killed protecting the people looking for weapons of mass destruction on April 26, 2004. This was one month after Bush was joking [at the Radio and Television Correspondents Dinner, on March 24] about looking for weapons of mass destruction. And then my Sherwood is dead trying to protect people looking for them because Bush said it was so important to the safety of our country."

Disregarding the tacit conventions of jingoistic newspeak, Zappala adds: "I don't want anyone else to go through this, not an American, not an Iraqi, no one. As a person of faith, I firmly believe we have the ability to provide better answers on how to resolve conflict than what Bush is offering us. I've tried to meet with Rumsfeld at the Pentagon, I was turned away by armed guards. It's incumbent upon everybody to take responsibility about what is happening in our country. I have no recourse but to go to Crawford to do what I can to change the disastrous course we are currently on and to bear witness to the true costs of this war."

The true costs. Not the lies of omission.

War PR and war grief have collided at the Crawford crossroads at a time when the Bush administration is in the midst of launching its scam about supposed plans to begin withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. On Tuesday, the Associated Press reported that a spokesman for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld "said he did not know how many extra troops might be needed during the referendum and election period" through the end of this year. The AP dispatch added: "Other officials have said that once the election period has passed and the troop total recedes to the 138,000 level, a further reduction in the range of 20,000 to 30,000 is possible next spring and summer. That could change, however, if the insurgency intensifies or an insufficient number of U.S.-trained Iraqi security forces prove themselves battle-ready."

When a mass killer is at the helm of the ship of state, taking a bow now and again while "Hail to the Chief" booms from big brass bands, a significant portion of the country's population feels revulsion. And often a sense of powerlessness -- a triumph for media manipulation. Passivity is the health of the manipulative media state.

Cindy Sheehan and Celeste Zappala have joined with others in Crawford to insist that death is not a message for more death -- that we can understand death as a profound reality check, imploring us to affirm and defend life.

"Rage, rage against the dying of the light," Dylan Thomas wrote. The unavoidable dying of life is bad enough. The killing is unacceptable.

Digg!

Norman Solomon’s latest book, “War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death,” was just published.

Someone in Washington is in hot water for using an example from a nation other than the US to make a point about human rights. But I will risk it.

In Argentina under Pinochet, the mothers of the 'disappeared' simply stood quietly in town squares with photos of the relatives who were missing. The same continues in Central American nations. It is something that can be done under dictatorships.

We finally, after many painful years, erected our monument to the men and women who died in Viet Nam. That followed long years for some of us of writing to our officials, demonstrating, being arrested, going to jail.

The method behind Bush's madness to cut taxes during war is to make the burden fall heaviest on the families of our service men and women, only, and by postponing payment for the financial costs to later generations.

If that is not wickedness, I don't know the meaning of the word!

If we are to be worried about the number of people killed, wouldn't it make more sense to worry about the higher death rates? Approximately 2,000 Americans have been killed in Iraq in relation to the war effort. In 2004 alone over 46,000 citizen's died on America's highways and biways.

Raise the terror level back to red or whatever color they use now.
Never mind that it's just a crock of BS.
Bush should answer to his lack of accountibility. Chances are he'll take the Regan way out and assume resonsibility once he's out of the White House.
Oh wait, then we might actually be able to prosecute him.
As is, he's coming off as the untouchable president because he can get away with being dishonest about the Iraq war while Clinton was almost put away with committing adultery.

Let's hope that this demonstration will open the eyes of many Bush-lovers and show them what many of us already saw.

I just happened to catch the opening minutes of the O'Reilly Factor last early this morning. Being able to comment intelligently on this idiot means that occasionally you have to monitor him. Sure enough, the moment the show opened he went straight into a tirade (finger waiving all the while) against Mrs. Sheehan. When you've earned the Wrath of Bill, you must be doing something right.

By the way, I know this is off topic but have you seen the Rita Cosby thing on MSNBC? Dreadful! One of the worse things I've ever witnessed. Are the folks at MSNBC trying to become FOX? They're succeeding.

I am so heartened by Cindy Sheehan's vigil in Texas. Sometimes it takes a critical mass of pain to build up to the point where one clear soul can step forward and lead. We can all learn from Cindy's example.

Screaming about liberals avoids discussion of the real issues ...the constant pitting people against one another encourages reactions not thoughtful discussions followed by thoughtful actions. To be pro-war is a rather strange stance...I mean it's not like a football game...I'll bet you're pro life too.
Cindy Sheehan has chosen to be the vehicle to bring truth to the American people (the media is in king george's pocket) about a war based on lies and deceptions...no WMD, Iraq was not involved in 9/11.
We attacked Iraq without provocation after ousting the UN inspectors...there's too many evil dictators to take them all out so forget the evil dictator story and george is not exactly Mother Teresa . This war could have been avoided if we had stayed the peace course and let the UN inspectors do their job.
Cindy is rightfully angry that her son died for lies and deceptions now deemed by Bush to be a noble cause. Iraqi oil and world dominance is the noble cause our brave men and women have been sacrified for. Greed and grubbing by Robber Baron corporations and oil thiefs...now that is noble. We are in a race to the bottom and the conversation still is about the evil liberals...get a brain.

When Mrs Bush was interviewed on TV she was asked about all of the death and suffering that her son was causing in the Iraq, she responded with, "I am not going to trouble my beautiful mind with all of this death and killing."

While she could not trouble her beautiful mind with stories of the dead soldiers, someone elses child, now they expect Cindy Sheehan to shut up just fade away,

Here we have an intergenerational family of wall street war criminals who produced a looney tune to delight the Sheeny cannibals, and is attempting to get us into WWIII, while smirking all the way to the bank.

A mind as beautiful as Turd Blossoms Heart.

Keep it up Cindy, you have got this stooge and his Sheeny blood sucking, huckstering on other peoples blood, gang of primitives more nervous than the rest of us put together.

Cindy Sheehan has credibility to speak because she is a mother whose son died in this war. She has every right to ask Mr. Bush to explain the noble cause for which her son died. I applaud her bravery and her commitment. I support her efforts to bring our troops home. My heart goes out to all the families who have lost loved ones in this war. I do not know how Mr. Bush and his cronies can live with themselves or their decisions. As for those media people and propaganda brokers who attack Cindy, we know you for what you are. You are the people who sell your souls for money and power. You are the people who look on these soldiers as pawns to be sacrificed for oil. Oil is not worth Cindy's son's life, my son's life, or any other mother's son's life. We are not talking a threat to this country, we are talking greed, arrogance and stupidity.

I have heard from the theo-con aplogists, thank GOD there are'nt too many of them to deal with. My heart goes out to Cindy Sheehan. These aplogists apparently have no children, other wise they would be singing a different tune. bush fraudulently won both elections, the first was decided by the Supreme Court, the second was won by having Diebold in their hip pocket. bush fooled alot of people in 2000 by posing as a moderate. In 2004 it was Rove's appeal to the radical religious right, and Cheney's implementaion of fear. bush had always wanted to be known as a war time president. Well, he has gotten his wish, and has centralized power to the executive branch, giving him extra-ordinary executive powers. That is why he feels this war must go on and on, because if he loses this power, he will just be wanted, by special Prosecutor Fitzgerald that is, along with Cheney, Rove, Libby, Card, Gonzales, ect. I certainly hope Cindy Sheehan gets the satisfaction she deserves, so that no more of our sons and daughters have to die needlessly in this God forsaken Nation building excursion.

I think it is outrageously insulting for Brian Williams to introduce Thursday night's (08/11/05) news story about Cindy Sheehan's vigil in Crawford, Texas, by referring to "that woman"!

An apology to Ms. Sheehan and her supporters is in order, Mr. Williams!

Next time you interview Cindy Sheehan, please ask her to answer to the claims being made now by many on the right that "liberals" are using her for their agenda. I'd like to know whether she feels she's being exploited, as some are claiming. I'm wondering if it's a recently released Republican talking point, since suddenly the accusation seems to be popping up everywhere - not just in this discussion. I believe that she's proud to help us all have a voice, based on things I've read, but it'd be nice if we could get that from her mouth in order to refute claims by others to the contrary. THANKS!

Cindy Sheehan is a heroine. She is attempting to draw the attention of the ignorant to the realities of war. When our surviving troops do return, the PTSD will cause a myriad of problems resulting in more deaths to suicide, murder by cop against a flashbacking vet, divorce, addiction, family violence and so on.
Many of our troops are already addicted to valium, purchased for peanuts in any Iraqui "pharmacy."
Did you ever talk to a pilot who was sent by George Senior to "mop up" the highway full of departing Iraquis from Kuwait? They were ordered to shoot everybody, all the women, children (and there were plenty!), and elderly were massacred. It was "like shooting fish in a barrel." These pilots are really messed up!
I agree with the person who thought this was the closest thing to the anti-christ so far in our history. I hold anyone who voted for him responsible for this mess.

The quote is from Shakespeare:

***
Mark you this, Bassanio,
The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.
An evil soul producing holy witness
Is like a villain with a smiling cheek,
A goodly apple rotten at the heart.
O, what a goodly outside falsehood hath!
***

--The Merchant of Venice, I, iii (sorry I don't have the line numbers)

But, according to the New Testament, the Devil did cite Scripture in tempting Jesus (Matthew 4:10-11; Luke 4:6).

How about this quote: maybe some of you recognize it from the days of the Vietnam War:

***
If five hundred thousand mothers went to Washington
And said, "Bring all of our boys home without delay!"
Would the man they came to see, say he was too busy?
Would he say he had to watch a football game?
***

Oh, yes, in that war too, those who supported the war said that if we lost it, the enemy would come to our shores.

iamsensitiveyellow's comment on why people in foreign countries want to kill us has been a carefully inserted bit of right-wing hustling for support(which I admit, with corporate execs advising our President, it's no wonder so many good citizens of our country were duped into this ghastly affair).

Let's see, if I recall correctly, Mr. Bush said something about the terrorists hating us for our freedom?

So why hasn't the Netherlands been overrun with these so-called 'Islamo-Fascists'?

The more likely reason for the violence, supported by the fact that they, the terrorists, have been waging an ongoing war with us for the past few decades(going way back to us backing the illegitimate establishment of Israel), would be that it has been the general trend of American administrations to, more or less, do whatever it takes to serve the needs of a small elite, at the expense of our own masses, to keep the Middle East in a constant state of turmoil.

Some would argue that they just hate each other, and wanted to blow each other up. Evidence suggests(and this can be found in the Mitrokin Archives, by the way), that the USSR and the United States were backing Iran and Iraq, respectively, as well as a number of other conflicting nations, like Lybia, or Saudi Arabia(which has a nice, significant slice of the American economy, those Saudi royals having about a 7% influence on our daily lives, economically wise, of course).

Now, to put this back in perspective, to get back to my point, is this: After several decades of screwing those folks over, they are retaliating. They have learned many lessons in dealing with us, they have become smarter from our CIA training what is now Al-Qaeda(Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, our Agency fellers decided that wasn't cool so they gave OSAMA BIN LADEN a generous gift or two...million? Lots of stuff and cash, and training).

And the American government is significantly to blame here. Our government has done waaaaaaay more than its fair share to put dangerous people in power, and we shake our heads in confusion when they decide to get bold (which Iraq NEVER used any pre-emptive aggression, other than a little trashtalking, directly against the United States).

To get back to the subject of Cindy Sheehan, I read now that the Bush supporters are attacking her as the tool of the left wing. She's not a tool of the left wing; she's a part of the left wing, if the left wing comprises anyone who opposes the war or the Bush Administration. That reminds me of some Black conservative woman who once said that Rosa Parks must have been a tool of the communists, because otherwise nothing would have come of her refusal to get up. (Only communists are powerful enough to start a civil-rights movement, DYK.)

The evidence is there, it is only our intentional blindness that keeps it from becoming common knowledge. Thanks for keeping it in front of us. Some of us KNOW the truth.

Killing is patriotic, something you Un-American pacifists will never understand. Pacifism is NOT an American value, Killing IS! Why don't you liberals all hand out weapons to the next terrorist you see and get yourself shot! Wouldn't you rather do that then defend YOUR COUNTRY!

Killing makes this country great, so if you're poor or unemployed, it's your patriotic duty to join up and indiscriminantly kill strangers in far away countries who pose you and the US no threat what-so-ever. This is something you liberals will never understand: undying patriotism.

Again we see the right trying to deflect some of the press away from the real issue and start on with name calling.

After reading the comments on this story I firmly believe now that the right needs to hate. It must be something in their DNA that they just simply need to hate. They hate the liberals, they hate the terrorists, they hate this group because they don't believe in their blond haired Jesus, it's just amazing.

I have never seen a group so filled with ignorance and hate in all my life as I see with the current right. It's just sad. And aren't these people all suppose to be "good Christians"?

Anyway, prayers to Cindy and best of luck.
