Imperialism Is the New Black

Posted by lakshmi on January 25, 2003 @ 3:16PM

Empires are in. That's the message of the recent cover stories put out by the New York Times Magazine and U.S. News & World Report. As Progressive editor Matthew Rothschild points out, in true Kiplingesque style, "both articles prattle on about the United States reluctantly having to assume the imperial responsibilities that have allegedly been thrust upon it." The burden of empire is apparently far easier for these men to bear than the onerous duties of responsible journalism.
