Watch Rachel Maddow's Debut Show Launch on MSNBC Tonight: She Fights Lies Uttered by Politicians, Repeated by Media

By The Masher, AlterNet. Posted September 8, 2008.

Maddow will show that smart, provocative, truth-telling journalism and commentary has a potential massive audience on cable TV.

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

Rachel Maddow, Air America's homegrown star and the hottest new face on TV, is launching her very own new show tonight -- Monday, Sept. 8 at 9 p.m. on MSNBC -- and the Masher couldn't be happier. There are thousands of people -- Facebookers and all -- who are planning parties to watch the debut. Let's all watch it by the millions and blow those ratings through the roof and show the MSM turkeys that smart, provocative, truth-telling journalism and commentary has a potential massive audience.

It goes without saying that Maddow has myriad fans from every walk of life. (Feel free to visit the "unofficial" Rachel Maddow fan site.) Still, the Masher finds it rather astounding how much goodwill and admiration is being beamed to Maddow -- and how many unabashed sexual crushes. She must be feeling a super glow. When AlterNet posted The Nation's article about Maddow by Rebecca Traister, the staff was astounded. AlterNet commenters are a very critical and cranky bunch -- and many a writer has freaked out, run away and decided not to engage with the sharp-tongued denizens of the AlterNet underground. But not for Maddow. It was a near-unanimous lovefest. There were hundreds of glowing love letters (hopefully we'll get a chance to share some of them with you soon).

The corporate media hasn't quite known what to make of Maddow, since her rise seems to have no historical parallels. The best way they have been able describe it is as the second coming of Keith Olbermann, for whom she has substituted on his signature show Countdown. According to New York Times TV writer Bill Carter, the emergence of Maddow, along with Olbermann, has "led to an unofficial rebranding of MSNBC as the liberal alternative to Fox News, which is dominated by conservative hosts like Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity."

Of course Maddow is very different from Olbermann in style, temperament and approach. No doubt her show will strike a different chord than the sometimes bombastic approach that has made Olbermann Bill O'Reilly's bete noir and a very popular TV dude, but he hasn't exactly brought subtle analysis to cable TV. The Masher guesses that Maddow will be more unpredictable. In a telephone interview with Carter, Maddow discussed her new role:

"This is great; getting a regular cable show is something I've wanted," Ms. Maddow said. She acknowledged that the intensity of the presidential race meant that will remain the focus through the election and probably for the first 100 days of a new administration. But she said she would likely reshape the show as more of a general news program after "this political Christmas" has come to an end. That is the kind of show she does on Air America, and she will continue that show after she joins MSNBC, she said. As for being branded another partisan voice from the left, Ms. Maddow said she was no more partisan than any other host in cable. "I am who I am," she said. She dismissed the expected criticism from the right, saying, "Everybody likes to work the refs to make their own kind of political hay."
Probably the most important task that Maddow will tackle is to be the media's best lie detector. You can tell from this great clip of Rachel doing "Countdown" after McCain's speech that Maddow is going to aim her guns, not just at the McCain-Palin lies being spewed like the oil gushers they lust for -- and they have integrated all of them into their stump speeches -- but at the whole of corporate media, for accepting the words of these liars at face value. The lies perpetuated in the McCain and Palin speeches about Barack Obama bordered on the absurd, like Obama writing two memoirs but never sponsoring and passing any legislation, which is ludicrous; or his never working across the aisle with political opponents, when that is actually what he is known for; or his planning to raise taxes on all Americans rather than on only the tiny slice of the richest among us, which is his plan.

Needless to say, it is a tough job fighting lies. But if anyone can counterattack in this street fight of dirty politics and stick the dagger in deeply with charm, calm and super smarts, it is our Rachel Maddow.

Rachel Maddow will bring another welcome voice of sanity to television news.
Amy Goodman and Keith Olbermann now have company in their ranks of excellent journalism. Heaven knows they have paid the price, yet they keep on speaking the truth and calling the liars to the carpet.
Rachel's MSNBC show is much awaited and I hope it's the dawning of a new era.
Yes, I have hope, as long as there are those journalists who will keep the power of the media as truth tellers and exposers of lies and corruption.

I've not seen much of Maddow yet and I look forward to being able to see her regularly. It will be very cool to have a regular diet of old-fashioned muck-raking, to have a feminist perspective on the news and to be able to look at a woman tv commenter who has avoided having a big teased pile of 80s bouffant on her head.

I hope she gets to interview Palin soon.
Good luck.

Now we have to get all cable TV to be required to have MSNBC in every basic cable menu!

Just maybe, we can survive this election period.

A new dragon-slayer. Women will be heard.

And, none too soon.

And why not? The opposite (of smart, truth-telling JOURNALISM) exists and even flourishes. Please don't make me reveal the network, okay?

I'm really happy that Rachel is getting this opportunity. Last Friday when she subbed for Olbermann on Countdown and called McCain and Palin out for lying was a wonderful moment, one of many she's had and unquestionably more to come. I love how she can calls bs, bs in such a polite way, and usually with a little grin. She's smart, funny, charming, respectful, well spoken, well-informed and classy...and cute as hell! Yeah, I've got a huge crush on her too.

The demise of the Democratic Party?

Perhaps Rachel can address this question: Is there any evidence that the Obama campaign crew can do anything different than they are now doing which can retake the campaign momentum? Right now, Rove, Schmidt, Palin are killing Obama, setting the agenda, stealing the campaign slogan, focusing on what's wrong with Obama and twisting the truth to describe his comments and policy recommendations.

The Steve Schmidt people are tarring Obama successfully with all the traditional Republican rhetoric that we thought wouldn't work anymore given reality on the ground. The Dems seem positively quadriplegic in their inability to react on the fly and offset the continued erosion of support.

Has Rachel spoken with any Democratic party insiders who have a clue? I spoke FtF with my Dem. congressman and he was as upset as I was about what's happening with the Obama campaign strategy--and that was before the Palin bomb hit the electorate.

I am very pessimistic as nothing I see suggests that we are not in for 4-8 more years of Republican policies and that I have seen someone like Rove and Steve Schmidt literally pull the stake out of the heart of the Republican corpse and reanimate it in a matter of weeks. How can they be so bloody deft and we be so inept!?!?!?!?!?! When do we stop overestimating the savvy of the American public? Is it over for the Democratic party?

I was introduced to Rachel via AlterNet (thank you!) awhile back. I often clicked on the video links on the front page and tuned into clips of Air America discussions with her. I was immediately taken with her.

I even wrote her fan mail telling of my crush on her (and I'm a gay man). That seems to be an almost universal response to her. People just fall in love, regardless of their gender or orientation.

I guess that's because Rachel offers us something no one else in popular culture seems to be able to. Honest, intelligent dialogue on topics of great import delivered in a kind, gentle, and often amusing way.

Kudos Rachel, for making it to the big time on your own terms. Kudos MSNBC for recognizing that your audience is savvy enough to handle the truth.

She used the word LIE a couple times when she subbed for Keith. I believe that she will call liars "liars" when they LIE.

This all by itself will make her unique on the TV machine! I can't wait.

History shows Rachel Maddow will probably fail.

The overly bias reporting of MSNBC has not been well received by the viewers so far. Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews Have been pulled from MSNBC Political Anchor Desk. Mostly due to the obvious pro Obama, anti Palin reporting and comments. Olbermann's obvious salivating over Obama has been over the top. The rant Olbermann made soon after Palin arrived on the scene was sexist at best. His personal attacks on a 17 yr old pregnant teen is below the belt for even MSNBC to stomach. These two lead MSNBC to absolute last place in the ratings for the two weeks of the conventions.
So now MSNBC gives Rachel Maddow a show? When will MSNBC learn? You would think they would see after the horrible failures of Air America and Keith Olbermann , MSNBC would get it.
The American people do not want to be force feed liberal views.

I will indeed be watching the debut of the Rachel Maddow Program this evening on MSNBC. She is one of the smartest people on the radio today and now that the entire country willget to share in her wisdom and insight is encouraging to say the least.

You've got to hand it to MSNBC. They certainly have come a long way in a decade. Instead of trying to imitate FUX Noise (they actually used to have a program hosted by Michael Weiner!) they now have tilted ever so slightly to the left by granting a forum to Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow.

Just my luck....The girl of my dreams is gay....[SIGH]

MSNBC is a microsoft deal, right? The MS stands for microsoft? I do not get to watch Rachel Maddow even tho I want to because DISH TV does not include MSNBC on their top 100 list. Gotta go up the price scale to get it. Just like HBO making all the progressive documentaries they do and only the moneyed people who can afford HBO get to see them. Even Progressive news and information is hooked to greedy corporate conglomerates. Bummer.

Rachel is the best thing to happen to the msm for ages, maybe ever. MSNBC just pulled Olbermann & Matthews from it's political anchor spot because of pressure that they were leaning "too far left" (give me an f***ing break).

Sadly, the only thing at this point that can counter msm's corporate agenda is greed. We need to make sure Maddow's ratings are good enough to send a message. Tell everyone you know.

MSNBC is imploding with those two psychos Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann.

Plus, Maddow is tainted as Olbermann's protoge, just when Olbermann is self-destructing (again). What is this, the 4th network job Olbermann's blown up in?

Sorry, since MSNBC has demoted Keith Olberman, I won't be purchasing ANY products advertised on that channel, nor will I be watching any of their broadcasts - even tho' I like Rachael Maddow and her intelligent commentary. If the advertisers of MSNBC want my business, then they'd better convince the upper echelons of MSNBC governance to put Keith Olberman back where he was in the same time slot on the same days. I'm going to ask that all my peers, friends, family and retirees also stop watching MSNBC or purchasing their advertisers products.

Lies, hypocrisy and double standard has after all, has long been government policy, used by both parties, the stench emanating even from Ronald Reagan (Republican) to Eliot Spitzer (Democrat) all the way to the present crop of flip-flopping, back-stabbing, liars with a straight face bunch of presidential candidates in this election.

Nice to see Rachel get her show. There'll be plenty of material to use to unravel the layers upon layers of lies that our goverment, country and culture was built on, from creationism to the lies of a so-called, "election".

I just watched her debut and she was so fabulous! I am so happy to hear my voice finally represented in the mainstream media in an unapologetic and eloquent way. She mentioned in the article that she gets to yell at the TV...and the TV hears her. At one point, I yelled an objection to PAt Robertson and she raised the same objection thirty seconds later and demanded an answer. It feels so...great!! I'm heady with the experience, I think I should go lie down now...

Rachel was a little nervous and took a while to get moving, her sparring with Pat Buchanan was excellent, that old warhorse enjoys his verbal fisticuffs with her, probably because she has a quick wit and can match him point for point.

Couple of points, that set with the revolving red/white/blue screens is a MESS and why are we treated to production staff walking about in the background? That's so CNN...

And the "Ms.Information" sequence has the most godawful muzak backing, PLEASE drop it, Rachel.

Tonight Maddow stood alone, even stronger than Olbermann, in presenting all the scummy stuff about Palin that has been surfacing. I spent the weekend online helping to rub flints together and this afternoon was overjoyed to see a bit of a fire finally starting on CNN and MSNBC---but then Asskisser Blitzer let it go out. And, naturally, the networks didn't mention anything that might have sounded not "deferential" to Palin, the media condition imposed by her handlers. Olbermann tried but wasn't up to his usual standard. Maddow did not disappoint. She worked and reworked the point: do we want a potential president who is a religious extremist? So now Bill O'Reilly will probably transfer his venom from Olbermann to Maddow but, hey, hasn't Palin's arrival on the scene taught us that you can't hit a girl?
