Unfit for Publication: Swiftboater Book 'The Obama Nation' Filled with Falsehoods

By Matthew Gertz and Eric H. Hananoki, Media Matters for America. Posted August 8, 2008.

A review finds that Jerome Corsi's new book contains numerous falsehoods about Sen. Barack Obama.

Summary: In its preface, Jerome Corsi compares his new book, The Obama Nation, to his 2004 book Unfit for Command. The comparison seems apt: Just as Unfit for Command contains false attacks on Sen. John Kerry's military service, a Media Matters review finds that The Obama Nation similarly contains numerous falsehoods about Sen. Barack Obama.

In the preface of his recently released book, The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality, author Jerome Corsi writes: "My intent in writing this book, as was the case in coauthoring Unfit for Command, is to fully document all arguments and contentions I make, extensively footnoting all references, so readers can determine for themselves the truth and validity of the factual claims." Indeed, Corsi's comparison of the two books seems quite apt: Just as Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry contains false and baseless attacks on Sen. John Kerry's military service, a Media Matters for America review finds that Obama Nation similarly contains numerous falsehoods about Sen. Barack Obama.

Media Matters previously documented false and baseless charges Corsi made in Obama Nation about Obama's positions on the Global Poverty Act of 2007 and nuclear weapons. Media Matters also pointed out false statements Corsi made while discussing the book with Fox News host Sean Hannity, concerning Obama's position on abortion and Obama's memoir Dreams From My Father (Crown, 1995).

Below are additional falsehoods from Obama Nation, listed in the order in which they appear in the book:

The divorce

Corsi baselessly suggests that Obama's father, Barack Obama Sr., may have divorced his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, "following the prescripts of Islamic sharia law." Corsi's sole source for this statement is a blogger who made the claim in a March 20 post, which featured the false headline, "BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA WAS MUSLIM FOR 31 YEARS" and misstated Obama's mother's name as "Shirley Ann." The blogger Corsi cited, "Majalah Bulanan Kumunitas Indonesia Di Edmonton," provided no substantiation for the claim that "the senior Obama divorced Dunham according to Sharia law."

On page 44, Corsi writes:

The circumstances of exactly how or why Stanley Ann ended her marriage with Obama's father, like much else in the narrative, remain unclear. One version is that Stanley Ann divorced Obama Senior in 1964, when Obama Junior was three years old and Stanley Ann realized Obama Senior had returned to Africa to rejoin the previously undisclosed wife he had abandoned in Kenya. The other version is that Obama Senior, following the prescripts of Islamic sharia law, divorced Stanley Ann when he returned to Africa in 1963 to begin his work as a bureaucrat in the Kenyatta government.4

The endnote for Corsi's claim reads as follows:

The first version, that Stanley Ann Dunham Obama divorced Obama Senior, is the version commonly found. The version that Obama Senior divorced Stanley Ann under sharia law is told in sources such as the following: Majalah Bulanan Kumunitas Indonesia Di Edmonton, "Barack Hussein Obama was Muslim for 31 Years," March 20, 2008, at http://www.indonesiaedmonton.org/berita/
2008/03/20/barack-hussein-obama-was-muslim-for-31-years/.

attempt is just laughable. Is this supposed to be a book? The 'author' never went further than the cover page of Obama's book and was fed talking points by Rove and his mirror images. I wonder who paid to get the book into production????? Get that news out aggressively, just as who paid for the book on Kerry.

The poor guy seems to be thinking that every fart is a bubble of fresh air and that every thought he came up with must be true. Also notice the same techniques to discredit Kerry and Obama: 'they still need to prove they ...', 'what they say actually means ...', 'what they did in the past should be interpreted as ...', 'there is only opinion, and mine is right'.

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State." --Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany Minister of Information

I saw Corsi interviewed last night. It is so obvious that many of his claims were of the "I heard" or "I was told" variety.

Baseless attacks such as these do nothing but draw attention away from real issues. This then results in us getting the Bush's of the world in office!

This is an excellent analysis of Corsi's book. You can read my critique of the other new anti-Obama book, The Case Against Barack Obama by David Freddoso, on my ObamaPolitics website which I started for my book, Barack Obama: This Improbable Quest. I'll post my review of Corsi's book there next week, too.

Which is worse? That the majority of these spurious claims "against" Senator Obama only hold weight if one happens to be a small-minded bigot. He did drugs in college, he may not have tight relationships with every single member of his family, he may have gone to a (gasp!) Muslim mosque.

Or that in choosing to give these spurious claims credence, liberal-minded people are glossing over valid criticisms of Obama, most notably the increasing frequency with which he's giving audience to and accepting donations from powerful stock market and lending interests that are pushing the American public and the world into ever deeper financial distress.

Swiftboat Redux: the Corsi smear tactic used by Republicans against John Kerry
Posted by: HughScott on Aug 14, 2008 3:53 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
In my 2004 nonfiction book,, George Dub-ya Bush, THE PHONY FIGHTER PILOT, I wrote the following:

For readers unfamiliar with the Senator Kerry’s combat record, here is the best summary I’ve read to date, published by the L.A. Times:

"Commanding a swift boat, Navy Lieutenant j.g. Kerry ran missions in and out of ambush alleys across the hostile Mekong Delta and was awarded Purple Hearts on three occasions for being wounded in action. He also earned a Bronze Star and a Silver Star, the latter for beaching his patrol boat and jumping ashore to chase down and kill a Viet Cong guerrilla who used a rocket launcher to fire on his men."

Despite Kerry’s unquestioned heroism written in blood, White House weasels have accused him of faking wounds to get one of his Purple Hearts. The scurrilous tactic is typical of the Bush/Cheney campaign people.

Four years later, the swiftboating of Kerry still makes me angry. It was the reason I named my nonprofit Web site "UnfitMcCain."

The sad thing is, like in 2004, the Corsi smear campaign against Barrack Obama might just work, which is why we must do something to nullify its affect.

I suggest everyone on AlterNet who is outraged by Corsi's book visit McCain's campaign Web site and express your displeasure through its "Spread the Word" feature.

Here's the link you need to get started:

McCain Action Center

By the way, for the trolls on this thread who allege I am promoting my book, I wish I was that good of a publicist -- which I'm not. Of the $5,000 publishing fee I paid to Xlibris in 2004, I have recovered less than $500 in royalties. But that's okay. At least I gave some Republicans heartburn that year.

The Secret life of Jerome Corsi
Posted by: Tom Degan on Aug 14, 2008 4:10 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Jerome Corsi has never been convicted of child molestation - but all the signs are there. According to highly trusted sources, he has alientated every friend he ever had with sons between the ages of ten and fifteen. He has also been spotted in the town he lives in prowling areas known for being places where young boys on shateboards congregate. In 1997, a woman pressed charges against him when Corsi picked up her two, fifteen year old twin sons who were seeking a lift to the local mall. Said one of the boys,

"We got in the car and he started to talk to us in this really weird way. Asking us if we ever engaged in gay sex with each other. I mean, we're brothers!"

Police believe that the woman made a private financial settlement with Mr. Corsi as no charges were ever filed. An investigation is ongoing.

Corsi May Have Crossed Line Into Outright Libel with Anti-Obama Book
Posted by: SkeeterVT1 on Aug 14, 2008 5:13 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Jerome Corsi may have crossed the line into outright libel and defamation against Senator Barack Obama with his new book, "The Obama Nation." Fact-checking of the book by The New York Times, Media Matters and others already has uncovered numerous claims by Corsi that are outright falsehoods.

Chief among them: That Obama is a Muslim and has ties to Islamic extremists. I'm not a lawyer, but as a journalist and blogger well-versed in libel and slander law, I know that to deliberately publish a false statement about someone, knowing that it is false meets one of the principal legal standards of libel and slander: Reckless disregard for the truth.

Corsi, who has said publicly that his purpose in writing the book was to ensure that Obama not be elected president, raises questions of whether his book meets another principal legal standard for libel and slander: Malicious intent -- which is a requirement a public figure such as Obama must meet to successfully prove that he has been libeled.

Corsi has a well-established reputation for incendiary writings, in print and online. One such writing, fouond in one of Corsi's blog posts, refers to Arabs as "ragheads" -- long considered a slur as offensive to Arabs as "nigger" is to African Americans. Which raises, inevitably, yet another motive for Corsi's anti-Obama screed: Racial animus against the African American senator.

Were I Obama, I would have my attorneys go over Corsi's book with a fine tooth comb for other libelous and defamatory material. His claim that Obama is a Muslim and has ties to Islamic extremists is clearly libelous and demands legal action.

Neither Obama or McCain are fit to be president. I don't believe either of them will
be on the ticket come election day.
Songbird McCain and Marxist Obama will both be deemed inelligible to be president. Obama can't produce a valid birth certificate, only a fake one.
If this is the best America has to offer, we are in deep doodoo.

Have you read these books;
'How I fucked lady liberty by GW Bush'
or
'The fine art of being a shithouse queer' by the RNC
or;
' Stewed Babies recipies with my Lesbian Daughter' by D. Cheney
Most history we're taught in schools is a lie.
Half of the nightly news is BS. Nothing we hear from a campaign is ever true, except I need your money.Even the History Channel gets it wrong. So why not swiftboat captains? All they are really doing is trying to cover their own asses for outright slaughtering civilians
in Vietnam, not 'commies' but old people, women and children, and they gave a Pulitzer to the guy who shot the picture of the burning child
after a napalm strike.
Sure alot of BS gets put into books but the worst,most stinking pile of bullshit was in the 9/11 report and the WMD report. But the biggest load came in the form of;
'I george W Bush do solemly swear to protect and defend the Constitution from all enemies foriegn and domestic.' I guess the oval office falls outside both of those. If lies did'nt make money for people than Hearst Publishing and the Star and the national enquier would be out of business.

If America knew THEN, what they know NOW about Obama, how different would the primaries have been?

Like VOTER FRAUD in Virginia, Washington, New Mexico, Alabama, Louisianna, and Milwaukee.

The John Edwards scandal?

Obama's political inexperience (to become president) after serving only 300 DAYS in the IL Senate?

There's no better source for TRUTH, than the truth coming straight from the horse's mouth:

What DID O-blah-Ma I mean Obama state (from his own mouth) about America's defense?

[Obama's OWN WORDS in this video clip begin at: 1:18]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tplfWnLe05M

QUOTE:

"I WILL CUT TENS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN WASTEFUL SPENDING
(his opinion/NOT mine) IN UNPROVEN MISSLE DEFESNE...

I WILL NOT WEAPONIZE SPACE...
(space? what space? air space? no missles? no jets? no bombs? what space?)

IN A GOAL OF A WORLD WITHOUT NUCLEAR WEAPONS...
(what WORLD is TAHT? with places like iraq, iran, north korea?)

I WILL NOT DEVELOP NEW NUCLEAR WEAPONS TO ACHIEVE DEEP CUTS IN NUCLEAR ARSENALS...
(MOG!...Tell me how the hell America can be safe under this kind of policy???????)

END QUOTE

I make NO ASSUMPTIONS about Obama...I search for OBAMA's OWN WORDS to PROVE the HARD TRUTHS.

America MUST investigate the FACTS for themselves. You Tube has a multitude of video/audio clips of Senator Barack Obama, speaking to America (and others) in his own words.

If anyone REALLY wants TRUTH, then listen to the man yourselves (and REALLY LISTEN to what he SAYS and sometimes DOESN'T SAY), but PLEASE DO NOT 'think you know' what Obama says/does based on any assumption.

See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil...doesn't mean that evil isn't there. Period.

HARD TRUTHS!

Dems demand that media "stop" Jerome Corsi

Did you see how the Democrat National Committee is going around sending weird emails complaining that the media did not "stop" Jerome Corsi? That's like something from the old Soviet Union where the media was controlled by politicians!

Not WRIGHT for America has a good post on it.

Corsi is a hired hand for disinformation

The trouble with Corsi's material is how it is providing false controversy and free advertizing for McCain. The mainstream media from NPR, to the three major networks will reinforce and repeat the lies. The pundits will plant and water the innuendos. Corsi is part of the creative writing warehouse that reflect the very influential and very alive Rovian zeitgeist, which rolls across the information landscape in the form of "legit" news cycles. Before long, the average Joe won't know why he thinks Obama is "an outsider" to be feared. The disinformation business is very big, and they just might get away with denying the Democrats.

When I purchased the book "The Late Great USA" written by Jerome Corsi, I had no idea he was the author of the Swiftboat attacks against John Kerry. After I received the book, long after, I mentioned it to a friend who gave me that information. Now he is attacking Senator Obama with the same untruths as he did John Kerry. Needless to say, I am disgusted with myself that I didn't research the author. I haven't read the book and it was suggested that I sell the book on e-bay. Well, I will not inflict this on anyone else. I should probably research the author before I purchase anymore books. I have never been into book burning but I do recycle and this way maybe some good can come of this book.
