Pentagon Propaganda: So Much Worse Than We Thought

widespread TV network practice of hiring former military officials to serve as analysts, but even in our most cynical moments we did not anticipate how bad it was. Barstow has painstakingly documented how these analysts, most of them military industry consultants and lobbyists, were directly chosen, managed, coordinated and given their talking points by the Pentagon's ministers of propaganda.
Thanks to the two-year investigation by the New York Times, we today know that Victoria Clarke, then the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, launched the Pentagon military analyst program in early 2002. These supposedly independent military analysts were in fact a coordinated team of pro-war propagandists, personally recruited by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and acting under Clarke's tutelage and development.
One former participant, NBC military analyst Kenneth Allard, has called the effort "psyops on steroids." As Barstow reports, "Internal Pentagon documents repeatedly refer to the military analysts as 'message force multipliers' or 'surrogates' who could be counted on to deliver administration 'themes and messages' to millions of Americans 'in the form of their own opinions.' … Don Meyer, an aide to Ms. Clarke, said a strategic decision was made in 2002 to make the analysts the main focus of the public relations push to construct a case for war."
Clarke and her senior aide, Brent T. Krueger, eventually signed up more than 75 retired military officers who penned newspaper op/ed columns and appeared on television and radio news shows as military analysts. The Pentagon held weekly meetings with the military analysts, which continued as of April 20, 2008, when the New York Times ran Barstow's story. The program proved so successful that it was expanded to issues besides the Iraq War. "Other branches of the
administration also began to make use of the analysts. Mr. Gonzales, then the attorney general, met with them soon after news leaked that the government was wiretapping terrorism suspects in the United States without warrants, Pentagon records show. When David H. Petraeus was appointed the commanding general in Iraq in January 2007, one of his early acts was to meet with the analysts."
Barstow spent two years digging, using the Freedom of Information Act and attorneys to force the Bush Administration to release some 8,000 pages of documents now under lock and key at the New York Times. This treasure trove should result in additional stories, giving them a sort of "Pentagon Papers" of Iraq war propaganda.
In 1971, when the Times printed excerpts of the Pentagon Papers on its front page, it precipitated a constitutional showdown with the Nixon Administration over the deception and lies that sold the war in Vietnam. The Pentagon Papers issue dominated the news media back then. Today, however, Barstow's stunning report is being ignored by the most important news media in America -- TV news -- the source where most Americans, unfortunately, get most of their information.
Joseph Goebbels, eat your heart out. Goebbels is history's most notorious war propagandist, but even he could not have invented a smoother PR vehicle for selling and maintaining media and public support for a war: embed trusted "independent" military experts into the TV newsroom. As with most propaganda, the key to the success of this effort was the element of concealment, as these analysts and the Bush administration hid the fact that their talking points and marching orders were coming directly from the Pentagon.
The use of these analysts was a glaring violation of journalistic standards. As the code of ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists explains, journalists are supposed to:
* Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
* Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.
* Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement,
public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity.
* Disclose unavoidable conflicts.
* Be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable.
* Deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence news coverage.
* Be wary of sources offering information for favors or money.
The networks using these analysts as journalists shamelessly failed to vet their experts and ignored the obvious conflicts of hiring a person with financial relationships to companies profiting from war to be an on-air analyst of war. They acted as if war was a football game and their military commentators were former coaches and players familiar with the rules and strategies. The TV networks even paid these "analysts" for their propaganda, enabling them to present themselves as "third party experts" while parroting White House talking points to sell the war.
Now that Barstow has blown their cover, the TV networks have generally refused to comment about this matter. Further compounding their violations of the public trust, they are blacking out coverage of the New York Times exposé, no doubt on advice of their own PR and crisis management advisors.
Since the 1920s there have been laws passed to stop the government from doing what Barstow has exposed. It is actually illegal in the United States for the government to propagandize its own citizens. As Barstow's report demonstrates, these laws have been repeatedly violated, are not enforced and are clearly inadequate. The U.S. Congress therefore needs to investigate this and the rest of the Bush propaganda campaign that sold the war in Iraq.
The attack and occupation of Iraq continues, with no end in sight. Estimates of the number of Iraqi dead range from the hundreds of thousands to more than a million. The cost to American taxpayers will eventually be in the trillions of dollars. More than 4,000 US soldiers have lost their lives, and this is just a part of the horrific toll of mental and physical disability that the war is taking on hundreds of thousands of troops and their families.
This war would never have been possible had the mainstream news media done its job. Instead, it has repeated the Big Lies that sold the war. This war would never have been possible without the millions of dollars spent by the Bush Administration on sophisticated and deceptive public relations techniques such as the Pentagon military analyst program that David Barstow has exposed. It should come as no surprise to anyone that Victoria Clarke, who designed and oversaw this Pentagon propaganda machine, now works as a commentator for TV network news. She may have changed jobs and employers since leaving the Pentagon, but her work remains the same.

As much as I detest Mrs. Sniper Fire -- AKA "The Manchurian Candidate" -- I would have no choice but to hold my nose and vote for her in November.

SOME of us Americans knew from before the Iraq war started that this was all bull the media and administration officials were telling us.
Too bad we didn't matter.
SOME of us Americans knew in November of 2004 that Bush had lied, that the media had gone along with the president, and that the media wasn't rectifying its errors.
But still, not enough of us knew to make a difference. Too bad.
Now, many more Americans know the truth, but still not enough. And the media is complicit AGAIN in not only the past lies to sell war in Iraq, but now in new lies to sell war with Iran and with possibly Syria and/or N Korea too.
SOME of us will NEVER learn.

That we were lied to is no state secret. What is astonishing is the effort they put into speading those lies. As the good people at AlterNet make clear, who in their right minds could have imagined the extent of the deception. The fact that the main stream media is ignoring what can only be described as the most important news story in years is disturbing and shameful. That is why the next president and congress needs to reregulate the FCC. Don't ecpect that to happen if John McCain or Hillary Clinton are elected in the Autumn.

If anything, the NY Times is running an after-the-fact story to try to re-gain its credibility. This sort of reporting should have been done BEFORE the war....NOT five years after.
There is use to the NY Times: It makes a great liner for the kitty litter box. Stick to Alternet, CommonDreams, GregPalast and the ever brilliant ThoughtCriminal poster on this site as your main source of news... The MSM is just corporate propaganda.

No increase in your salary? Why? Ask HR Manager. Same thing happened to my friend too. See his conversation with HR Manager.
After 3 years of selfless service, a man realized that he has not been promoted, no salary increase. So he decided to walk up to his HR Manager one morning and after exchanging greetings,
He told his HR Manager his observation. The boss looked at him, laughed and asked him to sit down saying; My friend, you have not worked here for even one day.
The man was surprised to hear this, but the manager went on to explain.
Manager:- How many days are there in a year?
Man:- 365 days and some times 366
Manager:- how many hours make up a day?
Man:- 24 hours
Manager:- How long do you work in a day?
Man:- 8am to 4pm. i.e. 8 hours a day.
Manager:- So, what fraction of the day do you work in hours?
Man:- (He did some arithmetic and said 8/24 hours i.e. 1/3(one third)
Manager:- That is nice of you! What is one-third of 366 days?
Man:- 122 days (1/3 x 366 = 122 days)
Manager:- Do you come to work on weekends?
Man:- No sir
Manager:- How many days are there in a year that are weekends?
Man:- 52 Saturdays and 52 Sundays equals to 104 days
Manager:- Thanks for that. If you remove 104 days from 122 days, how many days do you now have?
Man:- 18 days.
Manager:- OK! I do give you 2 weeks sick leave every year. Now remove that 14 days from the 18 days left. How many days do you have remaining?
Man:- 4 days
Manager:- Do you work on New Year day?
Man:- No sir!
Manager:- Do you come to work on workers day?
Man:- No sir!
Manager:- So how many days are left?
Man:- 2 days sir!
Manager:- Do you come to work on the National holiday ?
Man:- No sir!
Manager:- So how many days are left?
Man:- 1 day sir!
Manager:- Do you work on Christmas day?
Man:- No sir!
Manager:- So how many days are left?
Man:- None sir!
Manager:- So, what are you claiming?
Man:- I have understood, Sir. I did not realize that I was stealing Company money all these days.
Moral: NEVER GO TO HR FOR HELP.
HR = HIGH RISK

GEN. BERNARD TRAINOR: . . But there was a plan. And the plan was for the United States military to get out of Iraq as quickly as possible, turn Iraq over to a U.S.-supported Iraqi government, on the assumption that the infrastructure, both the political and economic infrastructure, would be largely intact, and that the international community, the U.N. and others, would get involved in the post-Saddam period. That was a fatally flawed assumption, and as a result, a fatally flawed plan.
This is smarmy bullshit for a liberal audience, aimed at presenting the war as "a good idea gone bad". Blame it on the U.N.'s failure to "get involved?" - professional PR in action.
"GEN. BERNARD TRAINOR: That’s correct. That’s a correct—the three of them were joined at the hip, if I can use that expression. They all thought basically the same way, and their perceptions became reality. I think the President, I would describe it as the man who presided over the troika. I think Vice President Cheney was very influential in terms of the policy. And certainly, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld was a man in charge of the execution of the policy. Everybody else was what I would describe as in the outer circle. . ."
Really? Everybody else was not involved? Let's say a General wanted to send that message to a liberal audience - who would they use to get the message out?
http://www.democracynow.org/2007/5/25/ somebody_had_to_speak_out_if
And on the subject of Lieutenant Watada's refusal to deploy:
MAJ. GEN. JOHN BATISTE: I think that the right thing for that lieutenant to have done is to certainly express his displeasure within his chain of command, but remember the oath of commissioning that he took when he pinned on his second lieutenant bars. And the truth is, he should have deployed with his platoon and led them in combat. And then, if at the end of that he still felt the same way that he did, then he should have gotten out to speak out. And if he had done that, he would have had a whole lot more to say, and people would have taken him a lot more seriously.
MAJ. GEN. JOHN BATISTE: He followed his conscience, and for that, I respect that. I respect him as a person. I don’t agree with what he did. In the military, as I said, there is a fine line between an armed mob and a seasoned disciplined force. . . .There’s no questions. It’s “Yes, sir. Let’s go.” That’s the way the military works. And he stepped out of that. He stepped out of that and, as a result, needs to face the music, whatever it turns out to be.
The opening is even better - and Amy Goodman just lets him belt it out the whole time -even encourages him:
"MAJ. GEN. JOHN BATISTE: Mr. President, you did not listen. You continue to pursue a failed strategy that is breaking our great Army and Marine Corps. I left the Army in protest in order to speak out. Mr. President, you have placed our nation in peril. Our only hope is that Congress will act now to protect our fighting men and women. Senator McCain, protect America, not George Bush.
So. Who is the corporate media, again?

Let's adapt the duck rule for the MSM's military analysts. MSM military analysts are retired, high ranking military officers with 20 or more years of experience faithfully obeying the Pentagon 24/7; get paid liberal Pentagon funded retirement benefits; slavish repeat the Pentagon's latest spin & are trusted, honored servants to the Pentagon, even in retirement. It's no surprise that the MSM's military analysists are stooges for the Pentagon. That isn't news.
Perhaps some enterprising, competent element of the MSM will better the slip-shod work of the NYT; don't bet any money on that.

And how about the debate and election and the Syria story and Iran, and the rest of 'news' -- are we going to believe what they say because they 'usually' tell the truth and this Pentagon thing is not just business as usual? See, this is really just a gambit and reinforcement of the propaganda machine.

I give you a Ziggurat on
Alien Heat.
Here The President is maintaining a contact again as if he knows me shuffling through the flesh sack, pretending an interest. The astigmatic shuffling of lines resembling telephone wire in the brick of the theater: lost in the armoire of a faded film flickering and jumping to catch-up from the fifties.
Sucking up to my orgones again with insistent sucker pads resembling wet penises except for the dilated head portion like the toothed disc on an Octopus arm. “Come to me my sweet!” He warbles with that whining gramophone squeal. “We have yet begun to fouk, you delicious hunk of man flesh!” I can feel the wig blow building shrieks are about to follow. The prurience has over taken my ability handle it, imminent cerebro-flattus is at hand!
Darren pulls the stops out
Daring pushed them back
Suck up all the horse chestnuts
Blow them in the sack
Don’t you sit around and pout
Now you’ve got the ruts’
When we get all rectum fried
and if he tup our butts
inanities are our nuts.
the darkness of privacy spied
no time to be demure.
Pack up all the tickle furs
And gallop for the door
Or face an alien rapture
Now and forever more!

I worked in TV news for years. Back in the old days, ('80's) we did real journalism. Then, the public relations machine took over. The PR firms so kindly provided experts and video for TV stations to use for free. This practice has evolved to the point of ridiculousness. Virtually everything you see on TV news is more of a commercial than anything resembling news.
People always seem shocked when this sort of practice is revealed but I'm telling you it is as common as sand on the beach.
Granted, when this is done on the subject of war, it is much more despreciable than if the subject were chocolate....but my point is that virtually ALL of TV news is nothing but PR CRAP!
And OF COURSE the news media doesn't want to cover this story. Not only will it piss off the powers that be but it will expose the TV news world as what it truly is...another branch of commercialism.
Next time you see one of those stories on the news touting chocolate as a health food, you will know you are watching the kind of thing I am talking about. Hell, I've seen "news releases" touting the health benefits of sugar. Yeah, right. High quality scientific research brought to you by the sugar industry.

US news services are tilted towards the interests of the corporate elites and have been my entire life. At some point those same elites decided they should be free of all criticism and made it so.
Since then broadcast media has been nothing more than one long commercial for the monied interests and that most specifically applies to the war in Iraq. The media promoted the war like they were getting a commission on Iraqi oil dollars.
Since their corporate masters had money to invest in war profiteering that's what they promoted. The investment worked out very well for them. Not so well for the rest of the world.

Notice also How affordable these "boxes"are. And the simple fact that soon "every " household will "need" one. I personally find this extremely suspect. The media is already filtered and censored,so, what is the point of paying more to watch!
We all know that all things in the world/universe exist at a certain vibrational frequency(or at least a good number of us understand this principal) Our brains produce and react as a result of "waves" and these waves and their correspondant frequencies have been studied for years. What better way to interfere with thought processes than to manipulate these frequencies.Have you ever had a day when you just can't "focus"? The power of that "little picture box"(t.v.) with its flash and pulse properties is affecting this,as well as the rate at which those images are shown and interrupted.Have you noticed the annoying little noises and image interruptions advertising "coming up next" This is all having a profound effect on your sensory receptors. It is training you to be easily distracted from "the big picture"
All you have to do is look at a little research on sensory deprevation/stimulation to "see" what's going on.
Please think about this.
there is a solution to all of this, you may not like it,it may take you out of your "comfort level". Stop subscribing to the "commercial" things in life and their correspondant distractions.Think for yourselves and QUESTION AUTHORITY! PLEASE!

HR = HIGH RISK

The Military Media Industrial Bankers Conglomerate.
Rules the World.
They control everything you know.
The Hypnotic Propaganda/Conditioning Techniques they use are so
Sophisticated and advanced
They make Hitler look like
The Kindergarten COP!
The coolest thing is that you never even realize that it is happening.
The just say a few verbal suggestions,
Put you in a trance,
Open the top of your head
Like a Garbage Can and
Dump in their Garbage
Why do you think DEAD EYE and The Rest of them say?
911 a Million Times?
It takes you back to that moment.
Your vulnerable and confused.
Wondering how this could happen?
There is only one way it could?
They made it
Happen.
It is a Key that unlocks the door to your subconscious.
Then they lie, lie and lie.
And there are still a few pathetic
Ignorant fools that believe them!
This is common knowledge in few select circles.
It is usually never discussed and when it is
Most people are oblivious to it.
The Techniques that they use are so powerful and pervasive that it permeates
Everything we See, Hear, Touch and Smell.
It has been going for decades.
They write History.
That is why it repeats itself!
Who do you think is paying for all those
Neo-Con Memoirs?
The charade is Endless.
The same old Fascists march around in a circle.
They are Visually, Chemically, Genetically and Electronically bombarding you with
BU__! SH__!
It is on every TV Show!
It’s on all the RADIOS!
It’s on every Movie Screen and
All the Magazines.
Just one big pile of
Corpirate Shit!
What are you going to do about it?
This is just the tip of the Iceberg.
They are a worthy opponent!
Well funded,
Vicious,
Methodical,
Ruthless and Cruel.

And how about the debate and election and the Syria story and Iran, and the rest of 'news' -- are we going to believe what they say because they 'usually' tell the truth and this Pentagon thing is not just business as usual? See, this is really just a gambit and reinforcement of the propaganda machine.
When you get taken by a con at the pea game, aren't you allowed to 'win' some of the time to keep you playing?
