Time for Bill O'Racist to Resign in Disgrace
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest Media and Culture headlines via email.
Sepia-toned photographs retaining in permanent clarity the faces -- the proud, grinning white "men" gathered like hyenas around the mangled corpse of a black man who had been beaten and hanged by these reactionary monsters. As if the deeds themselves weren't shameful enough, these ghoulish lynch mobs would often take away souvenirs of their homicides: body parts, clothing, hair -- and those terrible photographs.
There are too many of these images. There are too many stories -- more than enough to justify any thinking-person's reluctance to pledge unconditional pride in the entirety our national heritage -- a heritage which includes a 1922 U.S. Senate filibuster against an anti-lynching law.
This isn't ancient history. These aren't isolated incidents. Perhaps as many as 4,000 American blacks were lynched in the eight decades following the end of the Civil War.
Similar events, in practice and symbolism, occur even today. As recently as last year, nooses were used to intimidate African-Americans. The noose, it seems, has become a newsworthy issue in the fourth American century. Almost exactly ten years ago, in 1998, a black man was tied up and dragged behind a pick-up truck in Jasper, Texas until his body was so decimated it was practically unrecognizable as being the remains of a man.
So there's no reason why Bill O'Reilly should be surprised when reasonable, rational, thinking Americans want him to be summarily fired for using the word "lynching" in the context of a rant about Michelle Obama. The outrage is righteous and justified. Words matter. And history shows that these words that Bill O'Reilly invoked cast a long, sinister shadow.
You've probably read the quote here and on other websites, but I want to make sure Bill O'Reilly's bigotry is seared into the record, so I'll post it here again:
And I don't want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama unless there's evidence, hard facts, that say this is how the woman really feels. If that's how she really feels -- that America is a bad country or a flawed nation, whatever -- then that's legit. We'll track it down.
Lynching? Party? Unless there's evidence? So we're to understand from Bill O'Reilly that if someone might be relating a certain level of dissatisfaction with America's present status and chief executive, that they deserve to be tracked down by Bill O'Reilly's Lynch Mob?
It doesn't even matter what Michelle Obama said. We do know that FOX News repeatedly misquoted Mrs. Obama's statement and regardless of what she said, nothing -- no words, intentions or deeds justify the unhinged spike in Bill O'Reilly's bigoted, splotchy blood pressure to the point of wanting to "track it down" with his "lynching party." She could've said something like, "Bill O'Reilly is a splotchy dillweed who enjoys savory, soapy shower falafels," and it still wouldn't justify this flagrantly racist "lynching" analogy.
And if it wasn't intentional, then it has to be pegged as gross incompetence, and this asshat -- this spastic Morton Downey Jr. throwback, this serial liar -- should, in fairness, be fired anyway. But considering Bill O'Reilly's record, incompetence only explains half of it. The rest falls in line with a pattern of well-documented bigotry.
It's not just his flippant threat to "lynch" Michelle Obama. It's the Sylvia's Restaurant rant. It's the wetback remarks. It's the white power remarks. All of it. How many other reporters, personalities and celebrities need to be suspended and fired while Bill O'Reilly, time and time again, gets a pass? Instead, FOX News and Roger Ailes enable his prime time behavior because Bill O'Reilly's radio and TV shows are, of course, somewhat popular among similarly simplistic dolts.
He clearly doesn't understand the repercussions of this kind of race-baiting language. And that indicates a staggering lack of understanding about what sorts of reactionary people are dialed in. Likewise, when Malkin, Coulter and Beck (among others) use Senator Obama's middle name or deliberately mispronounce his last name as a pejorative, epithetical attack -- knowing the prejudices of their ignorant far-right orcs -- they indirectly incite violence against the senator and his family. NBC reported that the hate mail the Obamas received last year prompted the U.S. Secret Service to offer protection earlier in the campaign than is usually the custom. We can only imagine the menacing content of the mail, and we'd be lying to ourselves if we assumed it didn't have anything to do with the race-baiting, epithets and rumor-mongering assaults from these far-right shmendriks.
But I don't think Bill O'Reilly should be fired. Don Imus was fired and eventually reappeared -- moaning for braaaaiins! on another radio network. I'm sure the same pattern would occur with O'Reilly. He'd go away for ten months or so, and then like a giant, splotchy cancer he'd reemerge on CNBC, replacing Glenn Cock -- WHOOPS! I mean, Glenn Beck. I'm sorry about that. Beck he has such an unfortunate last name.
Bill O'Reilly must resign in disgrace for the good of the nation. He should publicly apologize to the Obama family and then, on that same show, he should resign. When he leaves the FOX News building, his FOX News Goon Squad and Tubby Stalking Intern-bots should be ordered to stand down while random passers-by are asked to pelt Bill O'Reilly with eggs, tomatoes and, naturally, falafels -- live on Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Then he should volunteer to walk around midtown Manhattan wearing a sandwich board that reads: "Ask Me About My History Of Racism (And Free Cell Phone Offer!)"
This is voluntary justice. This requires you, Bill O'Reilly, to own up to your racism and your incompetence and be man for once. Do you have the dignity, Mr. O'Reilly? Or will you, by not admitting to your racism and by not resigning, vindicate those of us who agree that you're nothing but a coward? Resign, Bill. After all, unlike you and your Stalking McCarthyite Schutzstaffle -- your "Lynching Party" -- we're not a mob out for vengeance. This punishment, Mr. O'Reilly, is entirely up to you.
Note: O' Reilly has since made an attempt at apology:
While talking to a radio caller, I said there should be no lynching in the case -- that comment off Clarence Thomas saying he was the victim of a high-tech lynching. He said that on 60 Minutes, you may remember. I'm sorry if my statement offended anybody. That, of course, was not the intention. Context is everything.

The far left can personally insult the President but you cannot mention the word lynch in the company of a black person. Does that mean the word beheaded should neet be mentioned in front of an Arab?
There is nothing more racist about ORiellys comments than there is unpatriotic about Michelle Obama comments.
Wait, you might be on to something!

BILL O'RILEY IS A BLOVIATING GAS BAG.
This won't come as any surprise to anyone who has read my blog, but I don't have a hell of a lot of faith in the intelligence of the American people. The success of Bill O'Riley only illustrates this point. That this mean-spirited, unenlightened racist is broadcasting in prime time over the people's airwaves on radio and television is just one of many assaults in recent years on America's national political dialogue. He, Ann Coulter, Michael Weiner, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity (among many others) are merely symptoms of what can only be described as our national sickness.
America's three-decades march toward facism have been enabled by these people. How long this assault on American politics will continue is anybody's guess. The lie mongers of the far right have a following - a big one. Thank the Lord for sites like this one. The mix is, indeed, the message.
Sooner or later (much later, I fear) even the American people are going to figure out that these bastards and bitches have been lying to us from the start. Until then, all we can do is expose them at every opportunity.

I'm all for firing the guy, on general principles. Fire him because he's an idiot. Fire him because his rhetoric is detrimental to our country. Fire him because I don't like him. All of those are valid reasons to fire him, and quite frankly, it would make my day. Making my day is, and of itself, a good enough reason to fire him, in my not-so humble opinion.
But don't fire him for using the word "lynch", particularly in the context he used it.
If the word "lynch" conjures up racial overtones with you, than that says more about you, than about the word.
For me, and most of the world, the word "lynch" means to use mob mentality to go after someone, with or without the proper justification.
To most of us, "lynch" conjures up the images of the old west, where a criminal was going to be put on trial, but the lynch mob got to him first, and there was a hanging.
Yes, there were lynchings later on, of blacks, for no reason other than being black. But I refuse to let the idiots at the KKK redefine what my words mean, and so should you.
Lets give Bill a pass on this one, and fire him for being the idiot he is everyday instead.
At least then, the right to free speech won't be in question, and if there is one single issue paramount to all others amongst progressives, it is the right to free speech.

The next in line character at FNC is the almost unbearable Hannity who, like Limbaugh, has no academic creditials but poses as an expert in political science and international relations.

If he is so offensive to one personally turn him off. For example I leap to the radio or TV to hit mute or change the station when G H Bush is on. He never says anything that is not a lie.
One benefit of this O’Reilly jerk spouting his hate and anger is that he taints so many others. All the right wing nuts are with him and so are the politicians for whom they cheer. Yes many Americans are too intellectually challenged to understand but I am hopeful over time and with much suffering justice will prevail. Those who listen and support these jerks will figure out how they are being diminished as humans by tolerating or joining in the hate and bigotry. That is democracy. One has the right to be an asshole. I use my off switch; I boycott his advertisers and complain to them about his (their) crass hateful behavior. That perhaps really hurts these people because they are driven by greed even more than hate and anger. I may be wrong about the order if their dysfunction.

Bill O's grave isn't deep enough. Let him dig himself deeper and deeper into the mud pit he crawled out of until he can't be seen or heard again.
The Bill O's and Rushes and right wing Christians are in their death throes. Their days are numbered like the hairs on Bill O's head. And, when they die, they will not be resurrected. And there's a dark place in hell reserved for them.

I can't let these misleading comments go unchallenged.
The writer of this uses the very same crap O'Reilly Himself uses to soft-soap his criminality, his overt racism. his hateful threats and juvenile bullying of anyone who doesn't follow and accept his stupidly childish rants, then consistently denies his oun RECORDED words.
To minimize and mis-represent the horrendousness of this countrys' historic attrocities of blacks, to say nothing of the native americans, all minorities, and peoples all around the world, continuing and endorsed today-either actively or covertly by their silence-by every leading politician and establishment figure who endorses our social and foriegn policies is rapidly taking us all to the very brink of self-destruction and a liveable earth.

Now, doing the right thing is what heroes do. Bill O and his ilk are afraid to do the right thing, therefore, they are defined as cowards.
In the current act of verbal cowardice, Bill O clearly knew the reaction he would get from fair minded people, outraged by his hubris, arrogance, and phony apology. Roger Ailes, who owns Fox will insure that nothing happens. It's like the Old Southern Gov. who protected the Grand Klugels of the KKK.
We just need to use our remotes to shut him out and reenter a decent world.

I despise Bill O'Reilly and Glen Beck, but you use language in your piece about firing Bill O'Reilly which violates your own creed on what you will not tolerate. For example, the spelling of Beck's last name and calling for pelting Bill O'Reilly.
While these may be things that I myself may like to do, they give ammunition to the right wing about your sincerity in publishing your rules of tolerance. This can be construed as doing the very thing that you forbid your readers to do, and that smacks of hypocrisy.

You can lie, defame public persons, even defame public persons with lies. You can invade their privacy in the service of "news".
You can advocate the overthrow of the government, provided you don't incite it.
You can promulgate bigotry and race hatred.
You can traffic in erotica, without much exception.
What you can't do is insist that a private entity continue to provide you with a paycheck if they don't like what it is you're saying.
If this poor excuse gets canned, there's no First Amendment issue involved. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the shithead to join the 7.7 million unemployed in the country , however, if he's still providing good revenue for the private entity in question.

Rupert's NewsCorp is a $60 billion company whose main shareholders can be seen at Yahoo Finance on NWS. They were major promoters of the invasion of Iraq and tried to do the same with Iran.
It's an outlet that is nothing but pure propaganda and spin - kind of like the Hearst Empire of Citizen Kane. It serves the central financial interests of Wall Street and Saudi oil shiekhs, not the U.S. public.
Why would they direct Bill O'Reilly to whip up some more racism? Simple - they don't want people talking about the rampant corruption in government, the slimy regulators and loan sharks who created the subprime crisis, the ridiculous secret "Homeland Security" contracts, such as Boeing's border wall, the debacle in Iraq, and so on.
They'll just keep on lying through their teeth. If you ever meet a FOX reporter, let them know what you think of their rotten network, and do as Obama did - refuse to talk to them. They aren't a news organization, but rather a corporate propaganda front.

BO performs a service for all of us by helping to identify those whose belief system is governed not by logic and reason, but by prejudice, fear, and hate. The litmus test for all is how they view the nonsensical ramblings of this sad little man. Make a new acquaintance and ask them if they saw BO's show last night. Let them explain how they feel about what he said. (It doesn't matter what night or what he said.) Is there little doubt at this point whether this new acquaintance floats like a duck?
Some three centuries ago, society started crawling out of an age of darkness. Instead of rule through a doctrine of intolerance and ignorance, an age of logic and reason cast away the belief in power by paternity or charisma and replaced it with power through consent. Though Americans like to feel good about this by allowing all the credit for such sociological advancement to remain here (ethnocentricity meet narcissism) we should also take the brunt of the blame for the return of intolerance and ignorance throughout the world.
BO and his like exist to thwart the advancement of human achievement. Don't reduce yourself to their level and hate. It is my belief that their intolerance acts as a simple way to attract and therefore identify the ignorant.

But it's the big money that will keep him on the air, and all those
right wing racists. He feeds into their distorted not so bright minds.
He is a pig of a man. He has no integrity, low self esteem, and I'm sure all the mental problems that people of his ilk have.
So why do we give them so much air time and print time, like Ann Coulter an American style Nazi hit machine. We need to know about them for knowing your enemy is to keep yourself safe, but enough is enough. O'Reilly should be fired but only a network with a modicum of integrity would take that action. They are part of the "Family Values" party, [ some family, some values!! ] They probably had an office party for him.
They are all the same. They say there is a place for all God's creatures... even the scum ones, I hope in my next Place, I'm not in the same place as the billos of the world!

To whom it may concern,
When I was three years old I was at the end of potty training, but had an aversion to flushing. It got to the point that my mom stood me up and said "It's filthy, it's disgusting, and it STINKS! Now FLUSH THE TOILET!"
I've listened to enough O'Reilly. He's filthy, disgusting, and he stinks. Mr. Murdoch, Mr. Ailes, do the right thing and FLUSH THE TOILET!

The more we hear O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, that Laura Ingram person, that punk Hannity, and of course I think the even bigger ignorant racist Rush Limbaugh the more the right wing nut cases are exposed for what they are as well as that fat piece of shit Roger Ailes..and that criminal Rubert Mudoch..

America lacks so much accountability that it is exactly why isin the shape it's in now. GWB is in our highest office and his entire administration is performing illegal acts on the entire world. And no one is holding him accountable despite our voices saying so.
Impeach Bush/Cheney and prosecute. Prosecute Rice and Rumsfeld and Fox and O'Rielly. Freeze their assets and put them ALL in jail. THEY ARE CRIMINALS. The real ones.
Hate speech is exactly the beginning of hate behavior. Good 'ol Jimmy Bob will bring out the rope, but O'Rielley planted the seed in Jimmy BOB. O'Rielly is MORE accountable than even Jimmy Bob. IMHO.
Where are our law enforcement officials? Where ever O'rielly is speaking from, the sheriff should be serving him a warrant for his arrest. Period.

Of course he should be fired, and of course he won't. He and his ilk (Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, all the rest of their vile breed) are only a pawn in their game--they are saying out loud what more "respectable" right-wing fascists dare not, and thereby consolidating their "base" by appealing to the lowest, most vicious strand of mindless redneck bigotry through which they have manipulated poor whites into voting against their own best interests for centuries.
It is no different from the judges and prominent "respectable" citizens of the old Apartheid south donning their white robes after dark and becoming "night-riding" terrorists to "keep the niggers down"--O' Reilly is the televised reincarnation of these night-riders--the grim, murderous nocturnal shadow of the daytime likes of William Crystal, Dick Cheney, or Charles Krauthammer.
So of course, he WON'T be fired, and as Obama's star continues to rise, we are likely to see the pitch and verbal violence of right-wing hate speech rise accordingly. Vicious, hateful people never give up power without a fight.
So what should we do? Nothing. As these right-wing hatemongers get uglier and uglier, their true selves will be exposed, for all decent people to see--while Obama continues to rise, building bridges between all the rest of us (normal, non-psychopathic) people--whites, blacks, Asians, and Hispanics alike.

Bill O' says things like he will not lynch someone unless there is proof--proof of what is never made clear. Why should Michelle Obama being an angry woman be the basis for lynching?
The other example of Bill's log grade racism is his statement about Sylvia's Restaurant being just like any other restaurant. The real issue is why he would think it would not be like any other restaurant.

Going after the hired clowns isnt going to solve the problem. Rather than posting outragious clips of these minions there should be in-depth exposes done on the heads of Fox News. These are the men and women that decide to not only hire someone like O'Reilly but provide a 9 million dollar salary. These are the men and women who decide whether its worth censuring him, firing him or even giving him a raise. Obviously to this point, as long as advertisers are happy with ratings they aren't going anywhere. If advertisers are happy then Fox management couldn't care if O'Reilly called for the DIRECT lynching of Michelle Obama! (and yes, I realize going after O'Reilly embarasses any company that chooses to buy advertising space during his show)
... alas, puppetmasters aren't as sexy as going after a very public and controversial minion such as O'Reilly. Real change will come when you invade the privacy and invoke public ire over what the puppet masters do and say, NOT the puppets.

Without this simple concept, we would not have the right to be express our opinions here on Alternet - because Alternet would not be allowed to exist.
So please vote HELL NO to this pompous ass and his fascist network. Use your brain, your verbal and written skills, and your remote control to express your opinions to everyone that you can and eliminate their existence as quickly as possible. Networks exist only with funding from advertisers, and advertisers will not fund anyone who is unable to effectively promote their products. Make your feelings known to all of FOX networks advertisers, and eventually the FOX will die.

His ilk are a product of our time and the fact that the Ruppert Murrdocks of the world have bought and paid for the puppets they want. To think for a moment that any of them would say anything they know the bosses would not approve of is mythology at best. In fact if they were objective in ANY way, that would be their death knell.
The best solution is to boycott or write their sponsors. However, I would need to pay someone to watch their programs for me to do that unless someone could provide a list for me.
So deal with it folks this is the kind of country that only the religious could build. And until we lose our infatuation of Invisible friends it is going to get worse. Remember, the Republican party is the party of Jesus, God, and patriotism.

BUT for saying lynching he shouldn't be fired because of this. Firing O'Reilly for this would make his "other more dangerous crime" unnoticed.
For this he apoligized and that's enough. All the mainstream media must be investigated of telling lies to promote their candidate in an election time. Does Lynching is that fatal????? It is bad but there are more bad things O'Reilly did... Fire him for clearly promoting Giluliani or for any other reason but THIS. THIS IS STUPID.

Didn't Bill say that he would not join the lynch mob? Didn't see the show, but it sounds like he was defending what MO was saying. So by saying he wasn't joining a lynch mob he should be fired? I really don't get this, is my logic failing me? Or are you guys just smoking way better stuff....

Wether you watch it or not, if you pay for basic cable you are contributing to keeping Fox News and Bill O' on the air.
YOU are paying Bill O's salary!
My cable company Time Warner would not take fox news off of my plan so I canceled my service.

Did anyone notice that Bush talked about "noose" on the same day as the Potamac primary? Just hearing the word from the President's mouth might be enough to convince some people to stay away from the polls. Think about it. This is how evil these people are .... they could have waited a day for that story.
Here's a quote from the AP story that day:
"For decades, the noose was a symbolic part of a campaign of violence, fear and intimidation against blacks, the president said. Sometimes, he added, it was orchestrated by the law enforcement officers charged with protecting them. Bush also said the noose was a tool for intimidation and killing that conveyed a sense of powerlessness to millions of blacks throughout the country."
Just ask yourself: "Might it have been better to wait until after the primary election in the DC area to do this story?"

Please share the following information with your viewers, if you dare to really be "fair and balanced":
CNN heads gave a memo to their reporters. In it, they told them to carefully cover the Castro resignation; to point out the good things he did for Cuba.
New York Times held on to the story of McCain and his ties to a female lobbyist. Why? Because they publicly endorsed McCain recently.
Talk IS cheap. Wake up. Get your information from a variety of sources because the media cannot be trusted any more than politicians.
Don't think that for one minute that a Christian candidate would make a better President than one who does not discuss religion; which should be a private issue having nothing to do with oil prices, health care, or your mortgage. One who is willing to offer clear solutions to your problems and who they will target to do so, is most honest and will be held accountable.
A soothing speech cannot be your determining factor. I know your time is limited and you find it hard to spend a tremendous amount of effort doing fact-checking. But we're in a real mess and now is the time to demand the truth!
Back in the 90s when Clinton was President, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld & etc., wrote him a letter begging him to invade Iraq to "secure the world's assets", OIL.
With Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia holding the bulk of the worlds oil, its no surprise Iran was to be next. As he continues to veto every bill, nothing will change until a Democrat takes over. Exxon-Mobil is in the top 10 most profitable companies for 2007, along with drug companies, finance companies, and Wal-Mart. Corporate America is making money off the things middle-class America needs: GAS, PRESCRIPTIONS, MORTGAGES and LAUNDRY DETERGENT.
Since there is so much proof of Bush's blatant disregard for what American people are most in need of, I am so confused as to why more of us aren't doing the research? Getting involved? Taking action? Voting for who/what will benefit them?
In comes Obama. He makes a beautiful speech--no need for America to worry, he's saying everything we're thinking. Great! Let's just vote for him and our problems will be solved.
Wrong!
This is what Republicans and their slanted media slaves want you to do. Hillary poses the biggest threat to them, not Obama. Don't suck in the media coverage of the election, just do a little research. You won't find it on tv, but you will online! I really would trust Obama more if he weren't shaking the hands of those greedy GOPs already. And if his speeches offered clear solutions rather than just appealing to those who are satisfied with just soothing speeches.
Hillary '08

I happen to be conservative fiscally and more socially liberal. (not that I want universal health care or more welfare, but do want government assistance for our youth wanting to attend college!)
I believe in competition. I believe competition is the reason we are the leading economical country in the world. I believe competition is why other countries are now coming out and becoming economical forces. Competition is the heart of conservative thinking. I don't believe people are too stupid or incompetent to do for themselves, which is another premise of conservative thinking.
Speaking of competition, with two parties (liberal and conservative) I find it nice and fitting that the two parties of their own news stations. ABC, NBC and CBS do and traditionally have leaned towards liberalism, while Fox news now offers an opposing view, which I share and enjoy. I no longer have to watch ABC, NBC or CBS! I have a choice now. I think this is great for our country. I am also excited that so many liberals watch Fox News!

Ask any African American over the age of 50 what the word "lynching" brings to mind.
Ask any Native American Indian what the word "Geronimo's Skull" brings to mind.
Ask any Jew what the word "Holocaust" brings to mind.
O'Reilly knew EXACTLY what the word "lynching" in any form when directed toward a black woman would cause in everyone's mind who knows the horrors of lynchings.
And he plays right into the sick, racist, bloodthirsty minds of a white America that thrives on demonic actions for ego and power.
But lynching is not just a part of America's sick past. The racism and horrors continue today. Look at what happened at Abu Ghraib:
http://www.uruknet.de/?s1=1&p=41547&s2=29
I seriously doubt racism and bloodletting will ever leave the psyche and DNA of the American people. But we can send a strong message that it will not be tolerating.
O'Reilly must be fired and blacklisted from all media.
A solution for those who really want change

If anything the Fox crowd will continue recruiting the most talented hatemongers that can be found anywhere.

Peace

There's only one good, honest and true way to rid yourself from this idiot's fumeing. SHUT OFF YOUR T.V. !!! Sounds simple enough. Once the subliminals that make you think you're out of the loop subside, you start to realize you don't need to be told anything from the media. ALl they want to talk about is death, wars, and alot of other bullshit that's designed to sell you products, not inform you. T.V. is a Terrorist Tool and Bill...well he's Bil Ladin and we should probably let Mr. Bush send in the army on his terrorist ass.

Now, that means someone has to actually watch the show long enough to find out who those advertosers are. It's not going to be me, I have a low tolerance for that sort of torture.

We can see what real fair, and balanced looks like. We need what is being said here, heard by mass audience. Billy "O" could not swim in those waters. The liberals would eat him alive.
