It's Time for the Congressional Black Caucus to Cut Ties with Fox News

By James Rucker, Color of Change. Posted April 2, 2007.

Editorial: Fox News doesn’t care about Black people -- does the Congressional Black Caucus?

Note: With Jesse Jackson calling the Congressional Black Caucus's decision to hold a presidential debate with Fox News "shamefully out of touch," it's vital to keep the momentum going against letting Fox have any dealings with the Democratic Party's nomination process.

What would you say if someone told you that Black members of Congress were scheduled to host a presidential debate with a TV network that likens Black churches to cults, implies that U.S. Senator Barack Obama is a terrorist, and used the solemn occasion of Coretta Scott King's funeral to call Black leaders "racist?" You'd probably wonder, "Have these brothers and sisters lost their minds?"

Well, the Congressional Black Caucus Political Education and Leadership Institute (CBCI) has partnered with Fox News to host 2008 presidential debates. CBC members may not have lost their minds, but they've definitely lost their way.

Fox is clearly no friend to Black people. The network regularly uses its reach to denigrate all things Black -- Black people, Black cultural institutions and Black leaders -- while it stokes whites' fears of losing race-based privilege in America. John Gibson, a Fox TV host, recently urged viewers to "Make more babies!" in a segment delivering the frightening news that half of American children under five are "minority." Regular guest Mary Matalin used Corretta Scott King's funeral as a chance to call civil rights leaders "nothing more than racists who are keeping their brothers and sisters enslaved."

Four times in the last month, Sean Hannity has invited Black guests to attack Sen. Barack Obama's church as separatist, racist, and cultish. After Fox repeatedly harped on Obama's middle name, Hussein, and ran a completely fabricated story that the Senator was schooled as an Islamic fundamentalist, the Senator announced that he would no longer speak with Fox reporters at all.

Since rumors about the Fox/CBCI deal were confirmed about a month ago, more than 12,000 of our members have emailed the CBCI, making the case against Fox and asking the Institute not to proceed with the deal. After getting no response, members made more than 600 phone calls to individual members of the CBC, asking that they speak publicly against this partnership.

Instead of hearing folks' concerns, most offices gave callers the run-around, sending them to a CBCI voicemail box that was full for over a week, and saying the Fox debate is the Institute's issue, not the CBC's. It's a ridiculous response. Everything the CBC Institute does is done with the tacit approval of the CBC. The Institute is led and supported by CBC members, and any CBC member can and should speak up if the Institute goes astray. Some representatives have said privately that they don't agree with the deal, but not one has been willing to stand up to Rep. Bennie Thompson, the chair of the CBC Institute, and the person most intent on seeing this deal go forward. Thompson is a good man, but on this issue, he is absolutely wrong.

Hurricane Katrina showed us the importance of having strong leaders in Washington who can take moral leadership and hold their own colleagues accountable. If our leaders can't take a stand when the political consequences for doing so are minor and the issues are relatively simple, what can we expect when there's plenty of pressure and the issues are more complicated? And when Black leaders willfully ignore the voices of Black Americans and act in opposition to our interest, what signal does that send to non-Black members of Congress?

Members of the CBC might not realize it, but the CBC has chosen a dangerous path. Having Black voices at the table during presidential debates is critical, but that's not the issue. The CBCI already has a deal with CNN to host debates, another major news network has also expressed interest, and PBS is doing a series of debates along with Tavis Smiley at HBCUs. A partnership with Fox risks sullying the Caucus' reputation as "the conscience of Congress" and an advocate for racial equality and justice. Worse, the CBC's partnership with Fox does what our enemies can only dream of: it uses the most prominent Black brand in politics to validate and legitimize an organization that attacks us on a regular basis.

The CBC can still do the right thing and cancel, but it's going to take Black Americans sending a strong message. It's up to us to let them know that we're watching and that we expect better.

And CBS/ABC/NBC are any better?

So how much "good" news about African Americans does the major media Big 3 carry? And Obama's "minister" hasn't said wacky things?(Hell, what clergy don't say wacky things, after all the new testament and the koran are full of wild-eyed doom and gloom).

Until there are fully funded public campaigns, singling out Fox which is just more obvious than its competitors about its pro-corporate bias, is a tactic to delude African Americans and all Americans that there are "good guys" in big Media.

...which is still a racist, sexist political party. They're one and the same, joined to the wallet.

A great opportunity to confront the enemy (Fox). Why not go for it instead of turning tail?

FOX (Fascist Obsessed Xenophobes) "News" represents the worst journalism in America. The network's commentators prove it daily with their relentless rightwing diatribe. What better victory for Herr Hannity & Company than to have the Congressional Black Caucus cancel its debate. I can hear Sean now, calling CBC the "Caucus of Black Cowards."

The Democrats favorite Golden Boy Harold Ford Jr., has went to work for Murdoch. While in the House he regularly played Steppin Fetchit on Faux Newz Channel.

It's no big deal if the black caucus ignores FOX NEWS. There will always be an ever expanding base of viewers that will prefer it to the left wing pablum spewed by the alphabet networks or the miniscule in viewership cable news networks. I would bet that the black viewers that follow news on FOX are of the emancipated kind that no longer buys into the left wing plantation news networks. They would know that they have been had and controled by the Democrat clubs masquerading as "news networks". Just as they realize now in ever increasing numbers that race hustlers and poverty pimps like Louis, Jesse and Al have been using them to make money and not for any altruistic desire to help black people. I hope FOX continues to expand even though they have lately been starting to shift to the left a bit. At least they still are far better than the alternatives.

It's still amazing to me there are people out there that think that the major media outlets are NOT leaning to the right. I turned off CNN permanently when Kerry announced his candidacy. MSNBC isn't much better, but they have OK moments. I have occasionally turned on FOX news for amusement purposes and usually last about 5 minutes before I want to scream. Sean Hannity, in particular, is a complete asshole and I wouldn' t cross the street to meet him.
The CBC should heed the pleas and ignore FOX altogether. Everything FOX does is slanted and they shouldn't be trusted.

of 'blackism'. Recall how, most, republicans and democrats distanced themselves from groups that were 'race-based' like the Klan, CCC, AryanNations, NAAWP, and David Duke. Maybe it is time for blacks to likewise join the rest of the people and run as individuals or in an inclusive party instead of the black separatism voiced by these 'community' leaders.

At least you know where FOX stands

FOX News is a project that triangulated middle Americas disgust with the soc called "liberal" main stream media. It is in my view not as much a political project as a business project. Rupert Murdoch fast switches alliances as in the UK, he supported Margret Thatcher but now he supports Labour.

Religions Middle America did not feel at ease with Big City Liberalism, they think it is the root of all evil, secularism, homosexuality, the condoning of hedonist living. They believed and still believe that main stream media has a very hefty extreme left liberal slant. Since most of the main stream media journalists are liberal and left liberal their suspicions might not be wholly unfounded.

The thing with FOX News is that you never are in any doubt of there views whilst in main stream media you have no clue.

In Sweden there is a similar problem 75 % of Public Service journalists in Sweden are green or former communists. Only 25 % can be seen as liberal or left liberal conservative journalists exist but they are very scarce and mainly in economic journalism. In Sweden there is a similar debate; do we have fair and balanced reporting? FOX News is not Fair and Balanced but is Swedish and US main stream media that?

In Sweden we now have a center right government that probably will deregulate Public Service because of the perceived political bias, but is boycotting biased news services really going to o the trick? Is it not better to as FOX News declare its journalists political affiliation?

I still believe that the American system with media owners being conservative and journalists being liberal is a much better system than the FOX News and the Swedish Public Service system; with owners and journalist having the same political values. Accountability and separation of powers is always a good thing.

Media that take the Governments view in all areas is a very bad thing indeed even worse is media that has a one sided bias for one political ideology.

Liberalism is for diversity and freedom of expression. Do not boycott FOX News it is counterproductive.

It's really simple.
Fox News is heavy biased towards the right while claiming to be fair and balanced.
This is why they cannot be trusted as a partner for any non-Republican event.

The only thing that will cause Fox to disappear and cause the remaining stupid Americans that still watch this fascist echo chamber for what they believe to be news to possibly wake up, is when Fox can no longer get ANYONE who is not a fascist to appear on their shows.

Appearing on Fox as a liberal, or attending any of their functions, gives a boost to their quickly fading credibility.

All excuses to the contrary, and the thought of taking these pigs on on their own turf is bullshit. Fox will edit, spin, bully and cut whatever is said to fit their needs. It is not winnable.

Fox "journalists" should be shunned, their debates ignored and unattended. This is not cowardice. It is good sense, and it really fucks Fox up, which is reason enough.

They are a particularly bad joke, and should be treated as such.
