Keith Olbermann Proves That Dissent Has An Audience

MSNBC's Keith Olbermann has become the first cable news host in years to tell it like it is, and his soaring ratings prove the American public does have a taste for real news and honest dissent.

If you picked up the New York Times on October 18, you'd have had little reason to think it was a particularly significant day in American history. While the front page featured a photo of George W. Bush signing a new law at the White House the previous day, the story about the Military Commissions Act -- which the Times never named -- was buried in a 750-word piece on page A20. "It is a rare occasion when a President can sign a bill he knows will save American lives" was the first of several quotes of praise from the President that were high up in the article. Further down, a few Democrats objected to the bill, but from the article's limited explanation of the law it was hard to understand why.

But if you happened to catch MSNBC the evening before, you'd have heard a different story. It, too, began with a laudatory statement from the President: "These military commissions are lawful. They are fair. And they are necessary." Cut to MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann: "And they also permit the detention of any American in jail without trial if the president does not like him."

What? Did the Times, and most other outlets, just miss that?

Indeed, they did. Olbermann, who decried the new law as a shameful moment in American history, went on to proclaim that the Military Commissions Act -- which he did name -- will be the American embarrassment of our time, akin to the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 or the 1942 executive order interning Japanese-Americans.

It was a perfect story for the bold and eccentric host of Countdown With Keith Olbermann, which airs weeknights on MSNBC. A former anchor for ESPN's SportsCenter, Olbermann likes to call the news as he sees it -- especially when almost everyone else in the media seems to be ignoring a critical play. As it turns out, that tack on the news is increasingly popular these days, upending the conventional wisdom that incisive analysis and intelligent critiques don't win viewers on mainstream television.

Olbermann first cast off the traditional reporter's role in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, delivering a powerful indictment of the government's handling of the rescue effort. "These are leaders who won re-election last year largely by portraying their opponents as incapable of keeping this country safe," he said bitterly. The government "has just proved that it cannot save its citizens from a biological weapon called standing water."

At the time, other newscasters, most famously CNN's Anderson Cooper, also unleashed their outrage, spawning speculation that the natural disaster might also become a watershed event for broadcast news. But most anchors quickly returned to business as usual, censoring their own criticisms no matter how bad the news continued to be. Not Olbermann. Encouraged by rising ratings, he's since turned his distinctive take on the government's incompetence into a regular part of his show.

Last August he took the tone up a notch when he aired the first of his hard-hitting Special Comments. Regularly invoking some of the most shameful examples of American history to frame the Bush Administration in historical perspective, he's likened the President's recent acts to John Adams's jailing of American newspaper editors, Woodrow Wilson's use of the Espionage Act to prosecute "hyphenated Americans" for "advocating peace in a time of war" and FDR's internment of 110,000 Americans because of their Japanese descent. Ours is "a government more dangerous to our liberty than is the enemy it claims to protect us from," declared Olbermann the day after the President signed the Military Commissions Act.

Since his first Special Comment ripped into Donald Rumsfeld for attacking Americans who question their government, video clips and transcripts of Olberman's commentaries have been zipping around the Internet, a favorite on sites like Crooks and Liars, Truthout and YouTube. (The Rumsfeld commentary was watched more than 100,000 times in the month after it appeared on Countdown.) But it's not just a niche following: Since late August Olbermann's ratings have shot up 55 percent. In November he was named a GQ Man of the Year. When MSNBC teamed him with Chris Matthews to cover the midterms, the network's ratings were up 111 percent from the 2002 election in the coveted 25-to-54 demographic. And certain fifteen-minute segments on Olbermann's show have edged out his nemesis, Bill O'Reilly. (Olbermann deems O'Reilly the "Worst Person in the World" on his popular nightly contest for the newsmaker who's committed the most despicable act of the day.) Unlike O'Reilly, Olbermann doesn't shout over his guests, condescend to his opponents or deliver empty diatribes. Instead, his show -- which attracts guests ranging from Frank Rich to John Ashcroft -- features in-depth interviews with prominent academics, public officials and journalists on serious, often overlooked events of the day.

"Keith is a refreshing change from most of the coverage of civil liberties since 9/11," says Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University law professor and frequent guest on Olbermann's show. "Reporters tend to view these fights in purely political terms, so the public gets virtually no substantive analysis. As long as two people disagree, reporters treat it as an even debate. They won't say that the overwhelming number of constitutional and national security experts say this is an unlawful program -- they'll just say experts disagree. It's extremely misleading."

Olbermann, who denies any partisan leanings and whose background doesn't suggest any, insists his job is to report on what's really going on -- even if the public is loath to believe it. "We are still fundamentally raised in this country to be very confident in the preservation of our freedoms," he said in a recent interview. "It's very tough to get yourself around the idea that there could be a mechanism being used or abused to restrict and alter the society in which we live." Olbermann credits sportscasting for his candid and historical-minded approach. "In sports, if a center-fielder drops the fly ball, you can't pretend he didn't," he says. "There's also an awareness of patterns, a relationship between what has gone before and what is to come that is so strong in sports coverage that doesn't seem to be there in news reporting."

If history lessons in prime time seem an unlikely sell, it helps that Olbermann's show is also witty, quirky and fast-paced, covering everything from the Iraq War to Madonna's adoption fiasco to pumpkin-smashing elephants -- one of his nightly fifteen-second Oddball segments. With a growing number of TV viewers saying they get their news from Comedy Central's The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, it's no wonder Olbermann -- who's sort of a cross between Edward R. Murrow and Jon Stewart -- has a growing audience.

MSNBC seems to be egging him on. "The only issues I've had with my employers is to calm them down and say 'doing this every night won't work,' " says Olbermann, referring to his Special Comments. "I have to do it only when I feel moved to."

"The rise of Keith's skeptical or pointed comments are the mood of the country," says Bill Wolff, MSNBC's vice president for prime-time programming. "He has given voice to a large part of the country that is frustrated with the Administration's policies."

In a pre-election Special Comment about the Republican National Committee's campaign ads featuring menacing images of Osama bin Laden and associated terrorists, for example, Olbermann declared: "You have adopted bin Laden and Zawahiri as spokesmen for the Republican National Committee." Invoking FDR for contrast, he added: "Eleven Presidents ago, a chief executive reassured us that we have nothing to fear but fear itself. His distant successor has wasted his Administration insisting that there is nothing we can have but fear itself."

Not surprisingly, Olbermann has his critics. National Review recently lambasted him for his "angry and increasingly bizarre attacks on the Bush administration," claiming that he offers nothing in the way of hard news. But the author didn't cite a single fact that Olbermann had wrong. Meanwhile, as the Review acknowledged, O'Reilly's numbers are trending downward as Olbermann's are shooting up.

While his views may seem radical for mainstream television news, they turn out to be a pretty safe bet for him and his network. Which may prove that the American public does have a taste for serious, even high-minded, news -- particularly when peppered with a sharp sense of humor. It's another unexpected Olbermann news flash: Dissent sells.

Olbermann is the light at the end of the tunnel of Bushie crimes, lies and deceptions. He continues to spotlight the wrongdoings of the Bushies and other corporate/government criminals.

That we're in a situation and time where Keith has so much to fume about is tragic.

That we have credible voices, like his, fuming and line of communications still delivering those liberty-critical tirades to millions of minds (i hope) is promising.

Please tell me if you can name 10 (...ok, ok,... 5) people in high office with the same doggedly factual, historically informed moorings, authentic patriotism and loyalty-free, special interest unencumbered capacity to shine with credibility-driven trustworthiness?

(tries to answer his own question)

1. Bernie Sanders
2. Paul Wellstone
3. ........
....er,........

Amazing
Posted by: NoPCZone on Dec 2, 2006 1:30 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I find the condition of our media nothing short of amazing. The local cable system has over 80 channels on it's standard service and over 250 on the full digital service. Of all that, very little has real news or information in any depth. The local newspapers, radio & TV stations are in the same situation. Most national 'news' magazines are little better.

Think of this, in a country of 300 million people, 2003 figures show less than 9.4 million circulation for Time, Newsweek & US News combined. Less than 30 million watch one of the traditional network evening newscasts and far fewer watch any of the cable news shows. Magazines like The Nation and Atlantic run under 500,000 each. Circulation numbers for virtually every newspaper in the country continue to decline, even as our population increases.

Why do you think that is? Some of it is the fault of the audience, but most of it rests at the feet of the no-news news media. Lots of heat and very little light. Every political season is treated like a horse race and the issues go ignored while pundits discuss trends in polls and talking points. Celebrity news gets attention even as Ford & GM buy out almost 100,000 workers in Bush's economy that is doing great, according to 'news' reports.

Keith Olbermann has a grip on what he what he is doing precisely because he is not a product of 'Professional' Broadcast Journalism. Being a guy with a sports background, he figured actually covering news might be a good thing for a newscast. Being a great broadcaster, he knows that his program has to be good TV first. Being a realist, he knows that most people settling in front of the TV at his show's time have already got a good fix on what is happening. What they are looking for is background and context-- exactly what almost all 'news' programming lacks.

I saw Marvin Kalb running his arrogant mouth on C-Span today, complaining about what he does not understand. People have turned away from traditional media because they are not doing their job and are tired of the beltway filters imposed upon them by gatekeepers like Kalb and those he represents. TV Reporters drawing 6 figure salaries doing stand-ups after sitting in the White House Press Room all day are not practicing journalism- they are stenographers for those in power.

People have turned to Countdown, Democracy Now!, the Internet and other non-traditional sources because it's about the only places left that are not infotainment loaded with spin, talking points and shouting pundits. Thanks Keith.

Mr. Olbermann's downright, no-nonsense commentary (like most with sportscasting experience) on the political scene in the States is a welcome relief from those of the journalist field who have not the courage to seek truth in all things, and find a secure and comfortable career in reguritating the same fearmongering blatherings of the White House.

Rock on, Mr. Olbermann!!!

I was pepsident fallen when....scratch that....I was crestfallen when Keith Obermann left MSNBC in the late 1990's to return to ESPN. Back then, as host of something called The Big Show, I thought he had one of the best news programs on television. When he returned a couple of years ago, I couldn't have been happier.

Much as I love Countdown, however, I was a tad skeptical when a couple of years ago a reviewer called it, "the future of television news". At the time I remember thinking, well if this is the future of news on the tube, we're all in one hell of a fix! (Can you even imagine Edward R. Murrow or Eric Severeid doing a segment of Oddball or Worst Person In The World?) But then I thought if by "future" they mean reporting the whole, ugly truth whether the public likes it or not, then it's a very hopeful sign, indeed.

Fred Friendly once said that the job of a broadcast journalist was to tell the people, not what they want to know, but what they need to know. I think he would be proud of Keith Obermann - I know I am.

Pray for peace.

Corporate media is just that: three or four cyclopean conglomerate-style corporations filtering the “news” as "infotainment" to champion corporate government and Bushco, and to hell with the little people. IE: the secret society Illuminati championing the Illuminati -- meaning the New World Order, Fourth Reich, the Elite... Globalists on the Trilateral Commission, the Committee on Foreign Relations, the Bunderburgers, and the Bohemians; the 40 or so blue-blooded families who are conspiring to control the world with their $600 trillion+ dollars (!) they have stolen from the people. Kieth cuts through the bull shit to ferret out the Truth... and the Truth may set you free. I’m pleased that a few of your countrymen are finally waking up to the Truth to boost Obermanns ratings. You go Keith!

Initially I did not think much of Olbermann

I just figured he found another job in broadcasting but he does a better job than most in his profession now. I think that's sad considering I still look at him as a sportscaster. My view of him has been changing though. After his commentary in response to the bush administration calling others appeasers in relation to Neville Chamberlain made me think much more of him. If he keeps up the good work for a while longer I will gain much more respect for him.

Two of my favorite things about his show are the time slot and the Worst Person in the World. I thought it was wise for MSNBC to air his show at the same time as o'reilly's. Some people may want to watch news specifically during that time and it is nice to see they have a choice over o'reilly now. Seeing that made me hope Olbermann could siphon off viewers from o'rielly.

however, when will he start exposing the lies and deceptions of the 9/11 commission and the Bush administration about who planned and orchestrated 9/11.
I ask that as many people as possible start e-mailing him and asking him to do this.

I began to watch KO right after he began his 8PM witty dissection of the Daily Nonsense; whether it be W or news media frantically trying to put missing teenage models or B.Spears before Iraq as the top story of day.

I watched him becasue I used to watch him as the only reason to watch ESPN. Sports owners match Senators and the President as the most arrogant and smug bosses in the nation. KO deflated the Poobahs of sport and I was very disappointed when he left EPSN.

What was the real story behind his exit from sports where I know he had a large audience?

Klone Keith so we can see him on his current show, on an ESPN show, and on shows on culture from Hollywood to Broadway.

how very typically FakeLeftist--to mistake a DEMOCRAT for a DISSIDENT?? LOL LOL LOL!!!111!!

The sad truth of it is that our culture has been evolved by our parasite overclass so that dissidents are not tolerated. Well, EVERY society is like this. But in the USA the culture overlords cast our culture as one that TOLERATES dissidents. But until the Internet, dissidents were pretty much shut out.

Well, anyway, I do not have cable tv and therefore have never watched olberman, but like any other mouthy internet pundit, I feel well qualified to speak about his show. :-)
He is not a dissident. He is a DEMOCRAT. Just because the mass media lies prostrate before whatever party is in power in DC, and more or less ignore the out of power party, that does not mean that those who support the out of power party are DISSIDENTS! In The Name of the Sweet Two-Fisted Jesus!? How could anyone ever think such a thing!?

Now that the dems also have power, if Olbermann attacks the dems, too, THEN he might be a dissident.

How sad that fakeLefties should mistake him for a dissident, because what I said above should be obvious, which goes back to the whole political-party-as-quasi-religion aspect of it all.

Wow, since I never watch sports, I had no idea Olbermann used to be a sportscaster. Very interesting. As a product of one of the most highly ranked journalism schools in the country (the Newhouse School at Syracuse), I often wonder what the students there are being taught now. When I was there in the 70s (part of the class motivated by Woodward and Bernstein), we were taught about the fairness doctrine and the limits on cross-ownership of media outlets, all of which was swept away by that great liberal(!), Bill Clinton. Meanwhile, I tell people my undergraduate degree is in English, because I don't want to be associated with what passes for modern journalism.

As aregular viewer of Keith Olberman, I find hope for this country in any man who will bravely speak out truth to power. The Bush presidency has needed emphatic exposure of it's criminal unpatriotic actions for years now and Keith has done a remarkable job of bravely shinging a light on the state of the union. He is a genuine hero and I support his genuine journalism of accountability. Air America Radio is another beacon in the night of repressive government we find the rest of the media so firmly attached to. There are Patriots out there to help deliver us from sublimation, manipulation and the great lie. Dare I hope for a continued growth in the progressive movement and a return to American values?

Newt's Christmas Wish

Keith's comments on Gingrich's recent speech in New Hampshire deserve to be read by every American.

Gingrich's thesis is that because so much is bad in America and because we are living in constant fear of terorist attacks, the nation will turn to him to help save us. Mr. Olberman's comments amply disabuse Newt's thesis.

However, they do not go far enough. He misses the parallel with a post WWI Germany and a certain political party that rose to power for the same reasons Gingrich advances. The party was the National Socialist (aka NAZI) and their leader was a disturbed house painter known as Adolph Hitler.

America, know your history and your world history. As has often been said, those who choose to ignore history are consigned to repeat it.

Gingrich will no doubt deny it, but his game is facism - nothing more and nothing less. Given the chance, it looks as if he wants to be the first American Fuhrer. I'd say "nein" to that brain fart!

I can't find any news. I hear the latest Britney-Hilton-Richards-Jolie-Pitt goings on and haven't heard anything else. I mean these people are the movers and shakers not the President.

The President only goes to Vietnam (finally) and fight for the bankers (good job).

If Olberman is so great why isn't he on NBC and not the least watched/credible newscast MSNBC?

How is it that 20 minutes of three different national news broadcasts are nearly exactly the same and run at the same time with just four or five minutes of something completely different being in depth but not hard hitting reporting?

Local news has to be the biggest joke of all. Crime, business, personal story and sports. Throw in traffic and weather about five times between that and you have two hours of local news that amounts to nothing.

Open a newspaper and you have advertisements. AP reports and news you have heard or read already on the internet or broadcast.

We have known about the filtered news service for years but when did the most people wake up to it? Katrina hurricane? News have to devastate an entire populace for people to see clearly what is going on. That is still ashame.

Can't get MSNBC on my satellite package

I'm not willing to shell out an extra $10 a month to get MSNBC (since I don't watch many of the channels I'm already paying for) but I love seing clips of Olberman on the internet.

Perhaps I should start a letter writing campaign to Dish Network to get MSNBC included in their basic package.

Keith is wonderful!
He is witty, understands the issues, and he is never afraid to criticize anyone who deserves to be criticized. His show is fast-paced, interesting, and tells me more about what is going on in this crazy world that we live in than any other venue on TV
He always makes my day and my day is not complete without watching Countdown.

Let's keep up noting Keith's work and his programs. Something to worry about, we don't want him to "disappear" somehow during Bushes "war on terror," or end up in some third world CIA prison or Guantanamo. No doubt, his communications are all being NSA monitored/recorded at this time. So, let us keep awareness of him out in the open.

Olbermann consistently finishes at the bottom of the ratings week after week and month after month. If he has any audience at all its only committed fellow travelers that get their jollies promoting the lefty agenda of socialism and America bashing. It will take more than a boost from lefty web sites such as Alternet to bring advertising dollars to (P)MSNBC and credibility to lefty shills like Olbermann.

Talk about a power player and you must include Keith Obermann. He's good at what he does. I sure we have not scene the best of what he has to over.

Obermann is in his "element." I speak of self empowerment when referring to the word element. Most of us only get a few moments in our lives when the dynamics around our world seem so clear. In this post, his quote of "I have to do it only when I feel moved to" speaks to the fleeting nature of such a moment. Still, Obermann has mastered this clarity with a strong sense of accuracy that intimidates those who would question his logic.

Maslow's, a famous psychologist, pyramid theory of needs exposed a top level he termed "self actualization." Maslow believed only a few people in the world will ever reached this state, Martin Luther King and Gandhi to name a few. I am sure Obermann is a strong candidate for "self actualization" if he has not already reached such a state.

I will follow Obermann's progression and watch him very closely. He has something I want. Maybe, and I mean maybe, I will one day wake up to my realities in the way Obermann has. Until then, I will enjoy, watch, and read everything he produces, for it is truly a treat.

THIS COMBAT VET THANKS KEITH OLBERMANN!

What can I say? Back in the fall of 2002 I was still in the service and warned my fellow Airmen that our moron in thief, dumbya, was getting ready to make a BIG mistake in Iraq.

My enlistment was up in February 2003 and I refused to reenlist. Most of my friends in the Air Force thought I was nuts because I kept telling them that there were no WMD's in Iraq, that Iraq posed no threat to the US and that invading Iraq would unleash a MASSIVE civil war....a QUAGMIRE.....dumbya's QUAGMIRE. Two weeks after I refused to reenlist, STOP LOSS kicked in and prevented ANYONE from leaving my former unit. Three weeks after that, they were activated and sent to the middle east. After four years of insanity in Iraq ALL of my friends in the service have changed their minds about dumbya and his QUAGMIRE in Iraq.

Unfortunately last year I buried one of those skeptical friends. He was 34 years old and had a wife and 4 young children. He was in Iraq for only 10 days before he came home in a body bag. His wife is STILL a basket case and may never get over his loss and his young kids will never know their Dad.

I am MAD AS HELL about this obscenity against Humanity going on in Iraq and urge ALL Veterans to use their position in society to DEMAND FULL INVESTIGATIONS of the Bush Administration into EVERYTHING....the lead up to war, the EPA, our energy policy, Halliburton and all the LIES that got us where we are today.

GOD BLESS KEITH OLBERMANN! I have become such a huge fan of this "tell it like it is" true American Patriot. He speaks for me and the majority of working class Americans who want justice.

All right, all you youthful slackers, mall mavens, and brain dead bushie lovers. If you'd studied our history instead of snoozing through school and spending your time watching mind numbing sitcoms and "reality" shows, you'd know what great institutions our once free press and mainstream media news services were. You have a second chance to see it if you watch Countdown. What you'll see & hear is a true journalist from the old school who has waded through the lies and obfuscations spewed from the White House pressroom, extracted the truth from the phony talking points, and fearlessly reported the truth. Take notice of his diction and grammar. It'r rare to hear anyone speak our language so clearly and with such economy of words these days. I became proficient in our language, listening to the old-time broadcasters, like John Dailey, whose delivery was so flawless, he could've been a stage actor. In the days of my youth, news people were held to high standards of excellence, and never uttered a word without knowing what they said was true and accurate. Opinions were expressed as such, and not passed off as "facts". Reporters didn't print or speak what they'd heard verbatim as they do now, but CHECKED for accuracy and truthfulness first. Nowadays the "bubbleheaded bleach blonde" of Don Henley's song, "Dirty Laundry" reads from a script prepared by someone else, without a clue as to its authenticity or accuracy, instead of developing her own material as any true journalist would. More Kieth Olbermanns are out there and need to be encouraged to come forward.

This is the only pair in the "serious" news business that have a pair. Bill Maher, Jon Stewart and Colbert also do some excellent work but they're not taken seriously enough. Worst of all, these five voices of sanity are only seen by a miniscule portion of the American public. One can only hope that this will change before the USA as we knew it is gone for good.

Hi~
What impresses me about the boy is that he is so thoughtful about issues that he airs and is so capable of making big issues relevant. In addition, he does so in a very coherent style.

The other thing that I much admirer about him is that he isn't partisan. He reports information candidly, but I always believe that he doesn't have an axe to grind or a political bias that he is trying to shove our throat.

I always watched Keith, but usually skipped Joe. Recently, I've been staying on MSNBC to watch Joe. It seems to me Joe's show is starting to look "more honest" and progressive than it once was. To those who are more familiar with Scarborough Country, do you think Keith is affecting Joe's list of guests and his attitude? I'm starting to like Joe, and it's a bit scary.

Keith SPEAKS to the "waking innocent"

Waiting For The Signal

These pages that bring us together
are the fire in the cave above the stream,
a dream we move in and out of, faceless,
expendable, waiting for a burst of wings
to spill our pooled bones like coins
over the chilled and silent ground
we fell in love with so long ago,
singing the green hills homeward
under that shovel-shouldered sun.

Fatigue works grim the stone of souls.
No talk is needed to believe the bleeding
will be ours all too soon. Needled dust,
that settled itself in naive lungs, cuts
with each rasp, yet the bleeding
won't be stemmed. Quick, black tongues
flick from windows, floors below pancaking
slabs, and the Street slumps with peanuts
beside its beer, locked on the game.

In our rush of voices a stream curses
the murmur of pines. In our names,
what we begged for never to be done,
is done with no shame. And the day
drags its blindered self to toil. Night trades
whiskey pete for oil, while down slope,
death-drummer birds with blazing eyes
ascend the holy crags to kill dissent
before we waking innocent arise.

The "good" list

I think this is a good discussion and I would love to have others expand on it. At the top of list, though already mentioned, is Dennis Kucinich, and if we will give these representatives of the people our support, and our encouragement, just as this old song suggests, "...accentuate the positive. Eliminate the negative. Latch on to the affirmative. Don't mess with Mister In-Between," (Lieberman, H.Clinton, Pelosi) other politicians will come around and this list will not only grow, it could become the majority. And, when we give the press reason to believe that those on this list are the newsmakers and policy shakers, who their readers/listeners deem as important, mainstream media might wise up as well.

that affected the last elections. In my circle of friends there was such a profound feeling of helplessness that the elections
would again be stolen and we couldn't do anything about it. There was never anything in the mass media that could have
made Americans aware of the real truth.
For me the hopefulness started when Colbert "toasted"
Bush. Not only was Colbert hysterically funny but he cut to the bone.

OLBERMANN DESERVES WHATEVER AWARDS ARE GIVEN TO JOURNALISTS FOR MAKING THE MOST DIFFERENCE AND FOR EDUCATING THE PUBLIC LIKE NO OTHER DID.

P.S. I would also like to give credit to Air America's Randi Rhodes and Al Franken in particular.

Other truthtellers (at least sometimes) include [in no particular order] Ed Markey, Cynthia McKinney, Barbara Boxer, John Murtha, Sheila Jackson Lee, Charles Rangel, Waxman of CA, John Conyers -- and there are a number of others whose names escape me at the moment (from GA, WA, and NH), partly because most of them get so little mainstream attention (usine "mainstream" in the Orwellian sense). At the moment, there appears to be NO Presidential hopeful who has a consistent, positive relationship with the truth. As a Vermonter who has watched Sanders for 20+ years, since he was mayor of "the People's Republic of Burlington," I find it amazing that there is NO issue, initiative, accomplishment that his name evokes, making him one of the more successful Rohrschach blots in politics today, no?

While I agree with much of what he says, the only reason he gets a voice in the media is because the war is hurting the capitalist economy. (And because Keith Olbermann's sensationalism can draw audiences ($$$) from the "left".) Years ago MSNBC was chanting for war just like all the rest of them.

Keith proves that the Right cannot tolerate the truth. Notice, like the National Review, how they are reduced to name calling. Like Bushes WMD's or the USA "winning the war" in Iraq, the Right is losing when it comes to the truth. Be it Bushes illegal spying, or the lack of universal health care in the USA (proven to work by every other Western democracy), the truth of things smashes down the Right consistently and coherently. So, the name callers and personal attackers come out. No sticking to the issues and the truth. What else can be expected???

Internment was not unfair

The interment of Japanese Americans during WWII was not some loco or unfair act. The first problem is that the chance of riots against all people of Japanese appearance in the US was not a chance at all. It was a certainty and in fact some people were attacked before the camps were put in place. The public reaction to Pearl Harbor was so strong that without some sort of isolation it is likely that not a single Japanese American would be left alive within the US.
Secondly the idea that Japanese in Japan would be tortured in order to force Japanese Americans to betray America was a very real certainty.
I usually do not defend the US but in the case of the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII all those detainees need to be saying is thank God you did that for us. There were so many volatile moments such as the ongoing horror of Guadal Canar or the reported horrors of the death march of American POWs that it is obvious what would have happened stateside as families in mourning and a constant urge for revenge filled the minds of all Americans.

How many more ignorant racist democrats on this blog support this reprehensible bigotry?

WW2's 442nd regimental combat team of the US army was the most decorated unit of its size in the history of the US military.

not surprisingly, it was composed of Japanese-Americans.

Dissent always has an audience. Nearly everything has an audience. There are people who think we didn't land on the moon. There are people who think our government brought down the twin towers. Having an audience doesn't prove or disprove anything.

I'm interested in the assertion of "... his soaring ratings..." What soaring ratings? I love assertions without references. I can hear my old English teacher howling.

Keith Olbermann is a brave voice for change. Interesting point, that he started as a sports reporter ... gotta keep those hits coming, and gotta keep it real, 'cos "the leather don't lie."

Yeah. I'm liking him. He's brave. I do worry, though, that "TPTB" ("the powers that be") might try to stifle him at some point, should his fresh and vivid reportage be more than they were bargaining for (and should the numbers not be pretty for the megacorps). 'Cos it's still a real scary universe out in them thar hills! (phoo, and everywhere else one looks).

Keep on Keithin' On. Cheers.

Keith Olbermann's boldness even exceeds the likes of Alternet and Huffpost though I think these two are just as great. For Olbermann to make it through this tough time in the media sure shows that he for one can withstand the harmful effects of media deregulation. Let's hope we can pick up the tab.

P.S.: Unlike Lou Dobbs who reacts, Olberman is more pro-active. Don't be surprised if Olbermann does a far better job of siphoning away O'Reilly viewers than Dobbs.

Keith Olbermann is the only journalist on TV today that makes me think of Cronkite or Murrow, from a journalistic integrity point-of-view. He's not afraid to speak truth to power, especially when that power has been as abused as it has been by the Bush Administration.

I don't have much faith in the corporate American media today, but Olbermann gives me back just a little bit of that faith and hope. May he keep telling us the truth until the criminals running this country have been tried and sentenced to lengthy prison terms.

I'm as happy about Keith as the next guy, but can I remind folks that the NYT had a SCATHING editorial in its September 28th edition against the Military Commissions Act? "Americans of the future won't remember the pragmatic arguments for caving in to the administration. They'll know that in 2006, Congress passed a tyrannical law that will be ranked with the low points in American democracy, our generation's version of the Alien and Sedition Acts."

Let's not go crazy! Remember, the Democrats didn't say anything either!

Americans like Olbermann, nay, PEOPLE like Olbermann give me hope for a better future in America, and in humanity. In a country where mass media and the administration work hand-in-hand (FoxNews, and more) it is more than refreshing to hear Keith Olbermann, it is reinvigorating. In an age of political correctness and corporate asskissing, it is remarkable and laudable that one in the mass media itself has the courage and downright BALLS to do what he does. And that is: reveal to the public an open-minded, bi-partisan, freedom-protecting approach to journalism. He takes a chapter out of the Jon Stewarts and adds a much needed seriousness and realistic spice. With credited analysts and experts, he points out the facts and overlooked points with the backing of people who know what they are talking about. And while I love Jon Stewart, Olbermann gets much more respect for he takes things that ought to be taken seriously, seriously. Without Olbermann I don't know where I would get my news.
I say, thank God (whatever religion you believe in, or not at all) and thank America for Keith Olbermann

Olbermann Resorts to Sexist Cheap Shots, Isn't that Progressive

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Olbermann's very popular with the left currently for his anti-war, anti-administration commentaries, which, I agree, are bold and Murrow-like. What sullies this boldness is his resorting all too often to plain old sexism in jokes about Paris Hilton, for one. For example, calling her a "slut" and mocking her when she said she got punched in the face. Very meanspirited and juvenile...and not all that progressive, I don't think. You might say that Hilton is a joke, or that this is a trivial matter. But, the way that Olbermann makes fun of her is part of what supports the rape culture. His making misogynistic comments against an easy female target like Hilton shows he goes for easy laughs and that he really doesn't hold himself to the highest standard.

After reading, "The Left Puzzle," at AmericanThinker.com, I realize why everyone likes Olbermann so much. He and some others are the best examples of what the modern Left admires, talkers. In the theory of the modern Left, it is not what you get done, but what you say that is important.

I know I will get attacked for this, but please try not to make the attacks personal. Criticize the idea, refute the idea, not the person.

It's not a matter of caring what you think of me. I don't know you and you don't know me, so the personality doesn't matter.

We don't teach critical analysis in this country any more, so no wonder when someone actually has the skills to do so we are gratified and rewarded with substance. The stupid newscasters they hire are little automatons who followed all the rules to become some of those plastic, polished people who can't think, are lead, want everything safe and sanitized and anything critical gives them brain pains. They cannot stand up in any emotion, because that just isn't "nice". That is too much outrage. They weren't raised to be "angry" and display that. They don't even have the language to do so. When it comes to protesting they are apalled. These are the little preppies that the stupid stations hire. People who like to "go along, get along" mentality. That is how pathetic our country has become.

Deep Confusion

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I think we are being conned here --

The crucial point is being ignored: why aren't there dissentling voices in the mainstream media? It's certainly not for want on concerned members of the public.

Perhaps someone else can answer: why is Olberman held in such high regard? He is as indifferent to facts as mainstream journalists are generally, and the are scores of serious issues that he does not report on or even mention -- e.g., he use his platform to investigate precisely THIS question: why don't the media tolerate critical dissent (nothing close to my views are represented, not by Olberman, or by anyone else; e.g.)?

Another point: Olberman isn't doing any real work -- compare and contrast him with (say) Robert Fisk. Fisk works (fairly hard I should imagine) in the field, gathers facts and inturprits the significance of these facts; Oblerman's spot amounts to a repetitive tirade:

"These are leaders who won re-election last year largely by portraying their opponents as incapable of keeping this country safe," he said bitterly. The government "has just proved that it cannot save its citizens from a biological weapon called standing water."

Totally obvious (where meaningful) and and totally useless -- we desparately need to know WHY the disastor happened. But for him to have anything substantive to say about he would have to get off his ass and would have to take a real risk -- a risk that he might offend the wrong people.

(By the way, if Olberman calls Bush a war criminal or a terrorist -- that is, exactly what loads of ordinary people are calling him (and what he is in terms of the law!)-- or made the connection between The War and increasing America's strategic power, do you think he would keep his job a minute?)

But then Keith Oberman (sp) comes on my TV and TELLS THE TRUTH!!!!! I had to cry. What a singularly brave act. It's what ALL of us should have been doing all along.... way before we even went into Iraq. People..... YOU MUST wake-up. You must evolve. Please!!!!!!!

Tom Deagan said... Fred Friendly once said that the job of a broadcast journalist was to tell the people, not what they want to know, but what they need to know.

Someone could look at me and say, when I look at you time stands still.

Or they could say, your face could stop a clock.

Eviatar quoted Turley, ""Reporters tend to view these fights in purely political terms, so the public gets virtually no substantive analysis. As long as two people disagree, reporters treat it as an even debate. They won't say that the overwhelming number of constitutional and national security experts say this is an unlawful program -- they'll just say experts disagree. It's extremely misleading."

If I was ugly, and gettin uglier by the day, I would rather have that fact pointed out to me than to be patronized. Or worse, my intelligence insulted.

the repubs and the Bushies. While the rest of the msm abandon the american people and our democratic values and institutions.
Thanks to a very, very few people the truth is spoken. Keith Olbermann is at the forefront of these very few cojones who will stand up to the Rethug propaganda machine which is constantly slaying the truth. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert started this refusal to accept the endlies perpetrated by the Nazi Rethug propaganda machine. Does anyone remember Hitler and the Nazis and the strong support they got from the Bush family and the CATHOLIC CHURCH, my church. Also others worth watching are people like David Gregory, Helen Thomas, Lou Dobbs, Jack Cafferty, Bill Moyers, Jim Wallis. Amy Goodman at Democracy Now.org, Noam Chompsky, George Lakoff, Jeffry Nunberg, Jimmy Carter, Mr. Sufieh of the PLO/PLA, George Lakoff, Amb. William L. Peck, Norman Finkelstien, and Amy Goodman, Amy Goodman and did I say/ highly recommend Amy Goodman and all her guests, and all the Jews and Palestinians who are demanding a fair, just and lasting peace with each other and throughtout the middle east. God is watching us ALL and will judge accordingly, except for the radical religious right evangelical fundamentalist jihadist in america like the Catholic Church and the White southern Baptists who act as if they know the mind of God, which is sacrilege, heresy and blasphemy as God may judge them more harshly as they USE religion for political purposes.

PRAY FOR PEACE; I can't believe more people than Degan and I seem to be the only ones calling for that.
Once more and all together, PRAY FOR PEACE, please

Note the following quotes from this progressive "intellect"

"Did you think that you could play me by uttering some magic words like "supposed to be tolerant". FU! How's that? How'm I doing?"

"I'm here to suggest an appropriate attitude to my fellow liberals with regard to treating conservative larvae such as your own grub self - a subhuman, shameless, steaming hot pile of excreta trolling our sites."

"If I had my way, these people would treat you with such hostility and opprobrium that you would go out and end your worthless life."

"You are pernicious. The universe will be a slightly better place when you stop wasting our oxygen."

"Nobody cares about your feelings or thoughts or whether you see it our way or not. You're an idiot"

"you must be both ignorant, naive and of the most horrible judgment. Everybody else realizes that but you, buffoon."

"All I do is insult for a minute. No brimstone for 10,000 times 10,000 times 10,000 years and then repeat that many more times - and your punishment has just begun."

"A simple but direct "STFU ditto head" will suffice."

"But if you have it in you and you are so disposed, practice your contempt for these insects right here every day."

"All I do is insult for a minute. No brimstone for 10,000 times 10,000 times 10,000 years and then repeat that many more times - and your punishment has just begun. I have no less authority for my overt contempt for this piece of bloody phlegm than the Big Guy, and you can't get any more righteous than that, now can you?"

"And He would smite this POS into the next universe for supporting the antibeatitudinal values of the neocons: lie, steal, cheat, never apologize or admit fault or error, make war. So, there's biblical precedent for my indignant calumny."

"People, if this guy was here to help and got this reception, he'd be gone forever. His willingness to tolerate this treatment tells you that his agenda doesn't include helping liberals as he claims or implies. He hates you or he wouldn't be still be here trying to distract or convert you to fascism."

"Now go out and be a good ditto head and get into your sty and roll around in your feces. LOL. Then leave here forever. Shoo! Shoo!!!! Scat! Bad pig. (Where’s my rolled up newspaper?). "

ssegallmd, thanks for this "liberal" moment.

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." -Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"General Franks, you must be very, very careful. We have spoken with Saddam Hussein. He is a madman. He has WMD - biologicals, actually - and he will use them on your troops" Hozni Mubarek, President of Egypt - January 27, 2003

"General, from reliable sources, I believe the Iraqis are hiding chemical and biological weapons" King Abdullah of Jordan - January 23, 2003

French Foreign Minister Galouzeau De Villepin: “Right now, our attention has to be focused as a priority on the biological and chemical domains. It is there that our presumptions about Iraq are the most significant.” (United Nations Security Council, 4701st Meeting, New York, 2/5/03)

Villepin: “In the biological domain, the evidence suggests the possible possession of significant stocks of anthrax and botulism toxin, and possibly a production capability.” (United Nations Security Council, 4701st Meeting, New York, 2/5/03)

French Intelligence Supports Parts Of Secretary Powell’s Address To The UN -- “Powell presented the Security Council with satellite images, intercepted phone conversations and other evidence which he said supported Washington’s claim that Baghdad was hiding mass destruction weapons. French Defense Ministry spokesman Jean-Francois Bureau said Thursday that French intelligence backed up parts of Powell’s presentation. ‘There are a certain number of questions evoked by Mr. Powell that we had information on.’” (Christine Ollivier, “Chirac Says U.S. Evidence On Iraq Does Not Change French Position,” The Associated Press, 2/6/03)

In February 2003, The German Ambassador To The U.S. Said Iraq Had Weapons Of Mass Destruction. Ambassador Wolfgang Ishinger: “I think all of our governments believe that Iraq has produced weapons of mass destruction and that we have to assume that they still have - that they continue to have weapons of mass destruction.” (NBC’s “Today,” 2/26/03)

German Intelligence Services Predicted That Iraq Would Have Nuclear Bomb Capabilities Within Three Years. “A report prepared by the German intelligence services in December 2000, based on defectors’ reports, satellite imagery, and aerial surveillance, predicted that Iraq will have three nuclear bombs by 2005. But that may be too optimistic. Before the Gulf War no one had a clue how far advanced Saddam’s nuclear weapons program was.” (Robert Kagan And William Kristol, “What To Do About Iraq,” The Weekly Standard,

Russian Intelligence Reports That Iraq Was Planning Terrorist Attacks Against The United States. “President Vladimir V. Putin said … that Russia gave intelligence reports to the Bush administration suggesting that Saddam Hussein’s government was preparing terrorist attacks in the United States or against American targets overseas.

… Mr. Putin said Russia’s intelligence services received and passed along the information after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and before the American-led invasion of Iraq began in March 2003. Mr. Putin said Russian ‘special services’ had received information about plans for terrorist attacks ‘more than once.’” (Steven Lee Myers, The New York Times, 6/19/04)

Italy’s Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi: “I believe that the moment has arrived to find out where all the weapons of mass destruction that Saddam Hussein said he had, where they ended up.” (Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, President Bush Meets With Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi, Washington, DC, 1/30/03)

Amazing

To me it seems an infinitely sad comment on the state of US media that Olbermann, bless him, can become a news item himself simply by doing a journalist's job as it should be done.

I'm not willing to shell out an extra $10 a month to get MSNBC (since I don't watch many of the channels I'm already paying for) but I love seing clips of Olberman on the internet.

Perhaps I should start a letter writing campaign to Dish Network to get MSNBC included in their basic package.

Waiting For The Signal

These pages that bring us together
are the fire in the cave above the stream,
a dream we move in and out of, faceless,
expendable, waiting for a burst of wings
to spill our pooled bones like coins
over the chilled and silent ground
we fell in love with so long ago,
singing the green hills homeward
under that shovel-shouldered sun.

Fatigue works grim the stone of souls.
No talk is needed to believe the bleeding
will be ours all too soon. Needled dust,
that settled itself in naive lungs, cuts
with each rasp, yet the bleeding
won't be stemmed. Quick, black tongues
flick from windows, floors below pancaking
slabs, and the Street slumps with peanuts
beside its beer, locked on the game.

In our rush of voices a stream curses
the murmur of pines. In our names,
what we begged for never to be done,
is done with no shame. And the day
drags its blindered self to toil. Night trades
whiskey pete for oil, while down slope,
death-drummer birds with blazing eyes
ascend the holy crags to kill dissent
before we waking innocent arise.

The "good" list

I think this is a good discussion and I would love to have others expand on it. At the top of list, though already mentioned, is Dennis Kucinich, and if we will give these representatives of the people our support, and our encouragement, just as this old song suggests, "...accentuate the positive. Eliminate the negative. Latch on to the affirmative. Don't mess with Mister In-Between," (Lieberman, H.Clinton, Pelosi) other politicians will come around and this list will not only grow, it could become the majority. And, when we give the press reason to believe that those on this list are the newsmakers and policy shakers, who their readers/listeners deem as important, mainstream media might wise up as well.

OLBERMANN, STEWART, COLBERT, MAHER, LETTERMAN made the difference

that affected the last elections.

The Right CANNOT TOLERATE the Truth

Keith proves that the Right cannot tolerate the truth. Notice, like the National Review, how they are reduced to name calling. Like Bushes WMD's or the USA "winning the war" in Iraq, the Right is losing when it comes to the truth. Be it Bushes illegal spying, or the lack of universal health care in the USA (proven to work by every other Western democracy), the truth of things smashes down the Right consistently and coherently. So, the name callers and personal attackers come out. No sticking to the issues and the truth. What else can be expected???

It wasn't with Katrina that Olbermann first started telling the truth to cable viewers. It was in the aftermath of the 2004 elections. He was the only news anchor who, on an almost nightly basis, took the blatant irregularities in Ohio and Florida seriously. He's a reall Amercian hero! I never miss his show.

Posted by: godsbedamned on Dec 3, 2006 1:02 AM

Posted by: BobbyGreyFriar on Dec 3, 2006 11:53 PM

Once more and all together, PRAY FOR PEACE, please

ssegallmd -- the emotional ramblings of an unhinged thoroughly indoctrinated liberal.

Olbermann only has people on that he agrees with. His show is geared to grade schoolers. I pity the person who takes this show seriously.

I've never seen so many comments based upon a news article as I see with this Keith Olbermann article. With so many responses based upon a wide spectrum of opinions, Olbermann must be doing something right--without having to settle for cheap diatribe and theatrics.
