If you like what Rupert Murdoch, the right-wing billionaire behind Fox News and the New York Post, has done for the national discourse, you'll love what Philip Anschutz is trying to do in your hometown.

Anschutz built his fortune -- his $8 billion net worth is good for 36th place on the Forbes 400, ahead of better-known Murdoch and Steve Jobs -- in the oil and gas industry, augmented with railroad and telecommunications holdings, as well as Regal Cinemas and the production company behind The Chronicles of Narnia films.

The far-right American Spectator describes Anschutz as "a committed conservative" who "gives lots of money to the Republican National Committee and to GOP candidates" and is "friendly with fellow oilman George W. Bush."

In 2005, Media Matters detailed Anschutz's history of conservative activism:

Anschutz has a history of supporting socially conservative causes. According to a recent Post article, Anschutz's family foundation gave James Dobson, the founder of the conservative Christian organization Focus on the Family, an award for his "contributions to the American Family." The Post noted that according to the foundation's website, Focus on the Family works to "counter the media-saturating message that homosexuality is inborn and unchangeable" and that one of the group's policy experts referred to abortion as an example of when "Satan temporarily succeeds in destroying God's creation." Further, as thePost mentioned, Anschutz contributed $10,000 in 1992 to Colorado Family Values in support of the group's efforts to pass a state constitutional amendment to invalidate state and local laws that prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation. (The referendum passed, but the United States Supreme Court struck it down as unconstitutional.) According to the Post, "Anschutz's money helped pay for an ad campaign that said such anti-bias laws gave gays and lesbians 'special rights.'"

In May 2003, the Orange County Weekly reported that other Anschutz Foundation beneficiaries include the Institute for American Values, which according to the Weekly"campaigns against single parenting," and Enough is Enough, which "promotes Internet censorship." The San Francisco Chronicle noted on February 20, 2004, that Anschutz also funds Morality in Media. As Media Matters previously noted, the Institute for American Values also receives funding from the conservative Bradley and Scaife foundations, as well as grants from the John M. Olin Foundation, another major financer of conservative organizations. Enough is Enough and Morality in Media have also received funding from the conservative Castle Rock Foundation.

It brought up my city, and the "spirituality and religion" section was filled with anti-GLBT (it even has a "homosexuality" subsection) and anti-abortion, anti-Planned Parenthood "news" articles: the best reactionary propaganda carbon billion$ (which is destroying the planet as we speak) can buy. Boycott your local "examiner.com".

Keeping that in mind, it's no wonder those who have much to lose buy the medium they need to control and steer opinion.

So why don't we have cooperatives, why not small-cap corporations to counter them?

This is and always has been a center-left country: the center-right bullshit being fed us is but one of the fallacies the bought media endlessly repeats. Let's get busy and counter them -- advertisers will go where buyers are, and a good progressive paper, tv station or radio station will generate enough to stay afloat.

The video below was published by Examiner.com and remains on their website Regardless of who owns it, their editorial staff has in no way ever attempted to censor anything I have written for them, although this same video below was banned from YouTube, which repeatedly refused requests for an explanation as to why it was banned.

I have had several anti-war, anti-religious right and anti-rightwing agenda articles published by examiner.com and my views are considered to the left of AlterNet by most people, although I don't claim to be either a conservative or a liberal.

I find the terms "liberal" and "progressive" quite confining and progressive publications, similar to conservative publications, tend to represent a blind sheep following the blind dog and pony show approach for the most part, articles reflecting mainly a lot of "conservative" and "progressive" bias, rather than articles centered on helping the common people and interested in what is really true regarding how best to help them.

...in his marketing method. William Randolph Hearst used the name "American" in more than one city, including NYC and Chicago, and his Sunday supplement was the American Weekly. His fictional counterpart in "Citizen Kane" named all his papers "The Inquierer." Returning to reality, right wing oil tycoon H. L. Hunt had a conservative radio series, "Lifeline." It was sponsored (in the early 60's) by his canned food company, HLH Products. The show was HLH's only form of advertising, because wanted to show that "patriotic" advertising paid off. The food company shut down, as did the radio show--not enough business. Just as the Washington Times would have shut down years ago without its support from the Moonies. .

Obama Restates Opposition to Return of Fairness Doctrine
Posted by: Bearzerker on Nov 28, 2009 2:45 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
A White House spokesperson, in an e-mail to B&C, said Wednesday: "As the President stated during the campaign, he does not believe the Fairness Doctrine should be reinstated."

That comes in the wake of various reports, commentary and speeches, including from Democrats, suggesting the doctrine, which required broadcasters to seek out the other side of controversial subjects, could be revived in an Obama administration.

WHY THE HELL NOT!
people/Voters need to have all the facts presented when being updated with news broadcasts not just one side of the story being pushed by corporate interests [meaning those that pay the most]... TV broadcasts are being used as just another lobby tool by special interests groups while at the same time being masked as legitimate news when in fact its idealogue propaganda bent purposefully to get reactions that undermines elected governmental positions.

I want to know why Obama opposes reinstatement!

The Fairness Doctrine was a policy of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, that required the holders of broadcast licenses both to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was (in the Commission's view) honest, equitable and balanced."

Hughy Long was asked in the 1930s if America would ever embrace fascism. He answered "Yes,
but it will be wraped in 100% Americanism".

Deregulation of business and finance, destruction of worker labor unions, control of the money supply system, control of the media, constant and never ending war against "enemies" real or imagined, and a brainwashed population who don't want to think past their own wallet. Are we there yet? If not, we're damned close to it.

The Talk-Radio distribution system of old is being emulated by "interact internet" -- micro-dispersion through a network of particular localities saturating the country; a cellular structure.

Certainly not a benign, but a malignant, growth-sector.
