Maddow: Anti-Muslim 'McCarthyism' Making Us Less Safe

A wave of anti-Muslim "McCarthyism" among Republican politicians in the wake of the Fort Hood shooting is not only not helping make America safer, it may actually be frustrating anti-terrorism efforts, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow says.
In a segment on The Rachel Maddow Show Thursday night, Maddow aired numerous clips of Republican and conservative figures advocating for racial profiling, or even suggesting infiltration of the US government by "Al Qaeda sympathizers."
Maddow equated the recent political trend to the McCarthyism of the 1950s, when Sen. Joe McCarthy used fear of communist infiltration to gain political power and influence.
But Maddow's most salient point came in pointing out that the anti-Muslim sentiment being aired on the nation's newscasts could frustrate a recent effort by the CIA to recruit more Arab-Americans, in an effort to better prosecute the war on terrorism.
Those potential recruits' "language skills alone are considered a vital tool for America fighting terrorism," Maddow said.
According to the Associated Press, the agency has begun airing new recruitment ads in Michigan, and plans to take them nationwide in the next few months.
The ads are "part of an ambitious outreach effort to communities the CIA deems critical to reducing the threat of terrorism in the US. The agency has a five-year plan to boost fluency in Arabic and other languages," AP reports.
AP's own analysis backs up Maddow's claim that the anti-Muslim atmosphere being whipped up in Washington could harm the CIA's efforts.
"Resistance could come from US Arabs who have felt the sting of suspicion since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Many Arabs and Muslims have been dubious of the government's intelligence gathering and believe spying is going on in mosques and other places," the news agency reported.
Maddow's report began with footage of televangelist Pat Robertson declaring that Islam is "not a religion" but rather a "violent political system." She moved on to a clip of ex-Alaska governor Sarah Palin advocating in favor of racial profiling.
And she noted that Attorney General Eric Holder was "momentarily rendered speechless" during Senate hearings this week when Republican senators suggested that the Justice Department had been infiltrated by Al Qaeda sympathizers.
"The decision to bring [Guantanamo] detainees to the United States and afford them civilian trials is highly questionable," said Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA). "I want to know more about who is advising you on these decisions. There are attorneys at the Justice Department working on this issue who either represented Guantanamo detainees or worked for groups who advocated for them."
Maddow played a clip of Holder responding to the accusations. "I don't even know where to begin," the attorney general said.

Soviet Communism is dead now, but Islam is a different animal, going back to the 7th cent. and having no all-powerful Stalin running it today, its extremist "fundamentalist" adherents taking their instructions straight from the Quran, which tells them to destroy all govts. not submitting to Sharia, with paradise promised by Allah if they die during the attempt. There are 1.5 billion Muslims in the world, and only recently has the U.S. stupidly permitted mass Muslim immigration, only to see al-Qaida and other Muslim groups declare jihad on it, and several American Muslims take them up on it, remember the Beltway Snipers? This time it's not like with the Jews, who just want to survive, because an attempt to absorb too many will surely result in cultural suicide as this intolerant anti-religion tries to trample every other like in every country known in history. Yes, it would be nice if Arab-Americans could be used as translators, but every time they read their Qurans they're being commanded to destroy the U.S. govt., so how far can that work before another Maj. Nidal Hasan does us in from the inside? It would be smarter to recruit non-Muslims for Arabic training so we can be certain of their loyalty in such a sensitive job.

But there is a fundamental conflict between the founding beliefs of the United States and a religion that requires a joining of state and religion (Sharia). This has already become a problem in Europe.
The view of the founders was that ALL associtions are fundamentally voluntery. Hence if a group requires a certain mode of dress or behavior and you belong to that group you are free to adopt its requirements.
However, you are not free to forcefully impose them on others or even the current members of the group. They are at all times free to leave the group.
All groups that have as a goal the establishment of a theocracy, wheather Muslim or Christian are in fundamental conflict with the views of the founders.
Hence, in the U.S. groups such as the Amish not only are permitted but thrive.
Unless we address these conflict honestly and do not mask it all under a political correct posture that ignore these core conflicts we cannot intelligently respond.

Couple of things: McCarthy served a useful purpose at first. He actually started targeting our vaunted government scouting out Commies who had infiltrated it. This was helpful because anything that can upset the apple cart of the power of the government if only for a couple of weeks is a good thing. It had too much power then and it has even more power now. Power to harm. Power to kill. What else is it here for?
Only when McCarthy started to go after people in the public sphere and became mean-spirited and ugly, he no longer was of any worth. However, although many youngsters such as Maddow may believe that McCarthy was just so horrible, McCarthy did not have the dampening effect upon our society that subsequent writers claim. Reports of his "power" during the 50's have been highly exaggerated.
As for the CIA not being able to recruit Muslims or Arabs this can only be a good thing. The CIA is an organization that recruits people who become killers for the State. It forms death sqauds and hangs around "black sites" and tortures people. It overturns governments. It causes harm to innocent people. Its a horrible thing and JFK was correct in his instincts to want to disband it. Too bad for him the CIA found out his intentions.
Rachel Maddow's worries are those of a typical liberal. They love the State and they love War. Once in awhile they quibble a itty bit about some War or other but mostly they love Wars just like the Repubs.
I suggest that Arabs and Muslims stay as far away from the CIA as possible. No good can come of hanging around these stinkers.

From Wikipedia:
Civilian and military officials had concerns about the loyalty of the ethnic Japanese, although these concerns seemed to stem more from racial prejudice than actual risk. Major Karl Bendetsen and Lieutenant General John L. DeWitt each questioned Japanese American loyalty. DeWitt, who administered the internment program, repeatedly told newspapers that "A Jap's a Jap" and testified to Congress,
I don't want any of them [persons of Japanese ancestry] here. They are a dangerous element. There is no way to determine their loyalty... It makes no difference whether he is an American citizen, he is still a Japanese. American citizenship does not necessarily determine loyalty... But we must worry about the Japanese all the time until he is wiped off the map
That is exactly the same kind of rhetoric we are hearing now from the conservative right, and it is - indeed - dangerous and racially bigoted.
