Relentless Pressure from Progressive Groups Pushes Hatemonger Lou Dobbs Out of CNN

Groups like BastaDobbs have done in Dobbs, who used his media platform to stir up racist, anti-immigrant hysteria for years.

After relentless pressure on CNN by progressive campaigns like BastaDobbs and DropDobbs.com, Lou Dobbs announced on his Wednesday show that he was leaving the network, effective immediately. "This will be my last broadcast here on CNN, where I’ve worked for most of the past 30 years," he said.

Dobbs' abrupt departure from the network is a major victory for the Latino advocacy groups demanding his resignation. For years, the talk show host has stirred up xenophobic, anti-immigrant hysteria and promoted an array of right-wing talking points, giving lie to CNN's reputation for impartiality as well as comically belying his own claims of "independence."

Some of Dobbs' greatest hits: in 2005 the talk show host implied that Latino immigrants were spreading leprosy in the U.S. He falsely stated that illegal immigrants make up a third of the U.S. prison population. In a March 2009 radio broadcast, Dobbs declared, "Mexico has become our enemy." Of Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court, Dobbs said "pure, pure, absolute pandering to the Hispanics … "

Dobbs has also stated his support for extremist groups and individuals like the Minute Men, a militia group that patrols the border, and Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who marched inmates from his infamous tent prisons through the streets in pink underwear. Dobbs has ties to the hard-line anti-immigration group Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR); the talk show host broadcast one of his radio shows from a FAIR event, and the organization, which has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, has given Dobbs an award for, in their words, "his continued efforts in leading the immigration reform movement."

More recently, Dobbs shocked even his greatest critics by promoting the birther theory -- the thoroughly debunked claim that President Barack Obama was born in Kenya and is therefore not eligible to be President. Although Dobbs was repeatedly slammed for giving the racially charged theory a mainsteam platform, CNN refused to take action against the host; network President Jonathan Klein said that pursuing the discredited birther theory was Dobbs' editorial decision to make.

Dobb's fear-mongering about Latino immigrants and increasing embrace of the right-wing fringe – and CNN's seeming inability to rein him in – inspired the formation of several campaigns to pressure the network to remove Dobbs. The DropDobbs campaign, in partnership with Netroots Nation, National Council of La Raza and Deloros Huerta Foundation, called on advertisers to end their support of Lou Dobbs Tonight.

BastaDobbs, a consortium of more than 40 Latino advocacy groups around the country, launched a letter writing campaign urging CNN President Jonathan Klein to drop Dobbs for rhetoric "linked to the rise of bigotry and hate crimes." The organization also worked to alert Latinos to the fact that even as CNN courted their viewership with programming like "Latinos in America", the network also gave Dobbs a platform to spew incendiary anti-Latino and anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Roberto Lovato, co-founder of Presente.org, which helped coordinate the BastaDobbs campaign, said "Our contention all along was that Lou Dobbs – who has a long record of spreading lies and conspiracy theories about immigrants and Latinos – does not belong on the ‘Most Trusted Name in News. We are thrilled that Dobbs no longer has this legitimate platform from which to incite fear and hate."

Given all the controversy surrounding Dobbs, it's surprising the network has not kicked him out earlier. Especially since in addition to undermining CNNs brand as "the most trusted name in news" with polarizing, racist rhetoric, Dobbs also failed to bring in ratings. According to Nielsen Media Research, the ratings for his 7p.m. show are down 20 percent since last year.

In his statement Dobbs claimed that he did not yet have clear plans, saying "At this point, I’m considering a number of options and directions, and I assure you, I will let you know when I set my course."

But even before Dobbs' announcement, a September meeting with Fox's Roger Ailes sparked rumors Dobbs was gearing up to join Fox news. Dobbs' abrupt departure, more than a year before the expiration of his contract, indicates he may found a more fitting home for his hate-filled rhetoric.

We've had enough of Dobbs

I used to listen to Lou Dobbs but the campaigns to get him off the air were effective in changing my mind. He was clever. He disguised his racism as a form of "legal prejudice" based on the laws. He would say things like "if you don't like the immigration laws then change them."

But the truth is that Congress is a bastion of social prejudice. We don't need pundits to taunt us to "go to Congress" for social progress. We need pundits who point the way of progress rather than basing their views on existing prejudices. Prejudice is not a virtue. It is weakness.

I stopped watching Dobbs some time ago when I realized he was indeed spreading racial prejudice.

Now, how about applying the same technique to other pundits who support racism, classism and sexism?

Like many, I dislike some of what Lou Dobbs presented on his show and liked some of the debate on other issues. He at least let people of opposing views talk unlike Hannity.

But, I wouldn't read too much into his leaving and certainly think it haughty to go around claiming "victory." CNN has been loosing the ratings game BIG TIME, and he just may be ahead of the crowd rushing from this diminished network.

I say get rid of Wolf Blitzer and the friggin "Situation Room." Ok, Lou is gone, but now we have the annoying
"situationist" Wolf. Goodness.

I'm still looking for a good network wherever Lou ends up.

I don't love him, but I like him. I watched his show many times and never once heard anything hateful. It seems to me that anyone who has a politically incorrect opinion is deemed hateful by those who clearly live in glass houses. No nation in the world is expected to open its borders to scores of millions of refugees fleeing failed states. A few thousand, sure, but millions? 10 million? 20 million?

When the mainstream media can't being itself to identify Islamic terrorism when a man kills 13 people (including a pregnant woman) while shouting Allahu Akbar, that's a problem. When all criticism of a black politician is called racism, that's a problem. When we are not allowed to have borders or laws, because it might offend the delicate sensibilities of the refugees who are invading us, that's a problem. These problems are tantamount to national suicide, but for those on the Left who hate America, that might be exactly what they want.

He reached the point of Hubris
Posted by: LeonBNJ on Nov 12, 2009 3:41 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
To me Dobbs reached the point of Hubris, where excessive pride and arrogance did him in. His overplay of the bullet hitting his house in New Jersey, most likely a stray bullet from a hunter, may been the final tipping point for his bosses and staff at CNN. He was already on a slippery slope for his excessively right wingnut views on immigration, supporting the 'birthers' and TEA wingnuts. His ratings at CNN were dropping and in despiration and considering he was becoming more toxic, moving CNN away from being what it was created for, to report news, maybe it was time to move him out. Maybe he got tired of being on TV every day, facing a long commute (over 65 miles)and at his age (in his mid-60's I believe) maybe he just decided to bail out.
I suspect he will continue on the radio, I hope he never considers a run for political office.

Basta, Lou. End of line.

Why should we, the owners of the airwaves, be subject to fascist rants day and night on radio and tv? Bring back the fairness doctrine -- equal time on every program for all viewpoints. That'll take care of the haters once and for all. They cannot defend their viewpoints (which are often contrived, out there for ratings and the attendant rise in income), so let them be one voice in many.

Adios, Lulu. No te extrañarmos.

Hatemonger?

I listened to Dobbs and didn't judge him a hatemonger. When I commented on some of the targeted articles posted on alternet opposing him, a number of the replies were basicly hate filled name calling.

He was opposed to illegal migration. It isn't an ethnic issue but it was depicted that way because it was effective, just as some people who might oppose the policies of the President might be labeled racist.

He did a fairly good job for someone on corporate media. Most recently he did a informative series on the public healthcare plans in various countries.

Adios Lou, let the name-calling commence............

Hearing that Dobbs is gone from CNN is better than a double espresso for making my morning Zippy!

Now, I also agree with GET RID OF WOLF. That clown makes the news ("We will be asking pundit "x" about his views on whether the President's dropping approval ratings mean that the 2010 election is the Republicans to lose").

I saw the man speak in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. I was sitting next to a woman in her late 70s and when Blitzer said, "I don't know if you have heard of this but their was a genocide in Rwanda." She turned to me and said, "That was OUR General Romeo D'allaire that the USA put out to the wolves. Who the hell does he think he is talking to?!"

Ah, yes, the next thing to get me to go cold turkey off coffee for a week or two would be the removal of Blitzer and perhaps the return of Aaron Brown. Hope springs eternal.

Lou Dobbs told the truth...
Posted by: Old Skeptic on Nov 12, 2009 7:49 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
and the "activists", Hispanic and otherwise, hated him for it. He never complained about LEGAL immigration; he only exposed the ill effects of illegal immigration on our society.

With at LEAST 12-15 million illegal aliens here and about 15 million Americans unemployed (and millions more underemployed, working 2-3 or more jobs in an attempt to make ends meet)the "cure" seems obvious: get rid of the illegal aliens and give their jobs to Americans, but at AMERICAN wage levels. Without the cheap labor pool, employers who want to stay in business would have to raise salaries and maybe even provide some benefits. This would be a great thing!

Lou Dobbs was sometimes overly adamant, but he told the truth and if he runs for public office where I can vote, he'll have my vote. Someone needs to tell the truth about illegal immigration and its harmful effects on our society. CNN is just pandering to the ethnic groups involved. Dobbs is too good for them!

In my opinion, it's delusional to think Dobbs was "forced" out or pressured to resign. Greener - money greener - pastures await. Now sane people will have only one network to avoid because all the biggest nuts will be in one.......scrotum!

And Lou Dobbs simply doesn't qualify. Neither does the far-right wack-jobs on Fox (which is where his new home will be so don't get happy about his departure from CNN). Immigration does need to be dealt with by thoughtful and cooler heads who can see ALL sides of the issue and who are willing to deal with the ROOT causes of the problem. It's amazing to me that Dobbs is actually married to a hispanic woman and I'd be curious as to what she thinks. I'm also curious because the racist fringe Dobbs has been catering to isn't exactly thrilled with interracial marriages.

Of course, as predicted, the troll liberal losers have to post their nonsense in here because their lives are so shallow and meaningless. They have to whine about how "bad" it is for white guys because of the mess they created and help to maintain--which is racism. They endlessly overstate the issues and make it seem as if every minority is "getting over" on white people and yes, that "liberals hate America".

Some Progressive Positions

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Lou Dobbs has been progressive in his criticism of corporations, lobbyists and their influence on our government. He has been a strong supporter of the middle class and job creation in this country and vehemently criticized the outsourcing of jobs from this country. He has been a strong supporter of bringing our troops home and stopping our agressive military campaigns. His criticism regarding immigration pertained to immigrants who enter this country illegally and the impact that has on social and financial issues in this country. I didn't agree with some things that Lou said, but I believe that he is being unfairly critized for his positions on immigration and is not given credit for his other progressive positions. I hope that he finds a place where he can be a positive voice for the middleclass in this country regardless of ratings.

The pseudo-Left closes off debate once more...

If the PC, New World Order, pro-NAFTA, pro-GATT, pro-banker crowd at Alternet are cheering Lou Dobbs' demise at CNN, then there must have been more to him than one would have guessed from someone in the employee of the human garbage who own this network--I saw him rarely, but have gathered that he stood up for some sensible positions on immigration and public policy. That is one of the drawbacks of not drinking out of the MSM toilet, you don't really have a handle on the nonsense that distracts from real debate...just the noise of smug little sh*ts glorying in the fall of some idol that they don't happen to worship...at the moment.

We have a real unemployment rate hovering in the area of 17%...this is not the time to bring in more mouths to feed. A myriad of other problems that are due to too many people and incompetent political, economic and moral leadership will be exacerbated by unrestricted immigration.

We have a dollar that is tanking...a New World Order that is in the process of destroying our Constitution...two stupid wars for oil, opium and Israel underway and the racist human excrement at La Raza, whose motto "For the race, everything, for others nothing," receives the support of the same foundations allied with the banks who own the figurehead placed in the White House by Goldman Sachs. Yet, where in the MSM progressive rags do you hear about this?

The wretched pseudo-Progressives want a uniformity of opinion that reeks of the controlled press of their totalitarians soulmates in the Stasi and KGB. They want the same New World Order that Hitler and Bush called for on numerous occassions and they are on the threshold of achieviing this goal.

Arrogance and stupidity are bad enough, each alone, but when they are combined and allowed unfettered reign, things never end happily. And--shame on me--I have a wee bit of schadenfreude...you've got what you wanted--a silver cloud with a lining of dung, and now, you will get to enjoy the consequences.

By the way...October was the 3rd coldest coldest in the US and the wettest...enjoy. Many of you will soon be disabused of another pet, PC, belief. Cheers!

...of the 12 million illegal aliens were all potential Republican votes instead of the reverse (democrat votes)?

I never considered Dobbs a racist or hate-monger just because he was adamantly opposed to ILLEGAL immigration. He was equally as opposed to Globalism, NAFTA/GATT and saw all those issues as stealing American jobs and driving down wages, which he blasted the Bush administration over just as much as Obama. I would guess that MANY big labor groups would feel the same way.

AlterNet - just like the groups named in the article - have also been demanding he resign through numerous articles and blogger post. Is the real reason for that stance just the hope that immigration "reform" will lead to many more loyal "democrat" votes?

...whose record of disinformation spans decades. An article from the Timesonline posted at Rense.com called to mind their Moscow Bureau reporter, Walter Duranty, who won a Pulitzer for denying the Ukrainian genocide by Stalin and friends. He was the Judith Miller of his day, a disinformation specialist partnered up with neo-con running dog Anton Chalabi to see that Americans got "All the news that's sh*t, in print." The NEW YORK TIMES collaborated with Stalin in covering up the Ukrainian genocide...it collaborated with Bush and the Demopublican Regime in getting us into a war based on lies in Iraq. Its the same old rag that attacked the SAN JOSE MERCURY for its series on CIA drug running and helped ruin a brave and decent reporter's professional life before he was assassinated with two shots to the head in a 'suicide'.

And Lou Dobs, what did he do? Now many people died because of his work at CNN? None, nada!
Yet, all of the so-called progressives could do no more than mobilize against him...It just goes to show, just how pathetic the pseudo-Left in this country is...Hundreds of thousands dead, but that's OK...just don't close the borders and end the supply of cheap labour to the corporationists and their MSM spokes-creatures for nannies...that just wouldn't be 'progressive'.

Hate is debouching another point of view.

Dobbs is hated by the Left and hated by the Right.

He must be doing something interesting.

I don't HAVE a teevee; I wouldn't let one of those filthy machines in my house.

I don't endlessly listen to the rehearsing of Hate as the polarized MASSES INSIST is their right and privilege, to hate each other.

Dobbs disagrees with the way immigration is being handled; he has OPINIONS! My, my! How shocking!

Do you think and believe your opinions on this LIBERAL SITE are any less despicable?

Where is your advocacy of "government by consent of the governed"??? I don't see that here!

Where is your advocacy of "Government doing good by leaving people alone to work things out for themselves"? I don't see that here!

You hypocrites. Life for you is just another video game that you play with other peoples' lives.

More filth disguised as news.

Hatemonger?

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]

Viewers love to see topics and quests getting thier butts kicked. It's the winning formula!

We need SANE voices to deal with immoigration

Posted by: Southern Gal on Nov 12, 2009 10:07 AM
