Rachel Maddow Mocks the Idea of Bush as a Motivational Speaker

AlterNet. Posted October 23, 2009.

Bush will be speaking along with Dr. Earl Mindell, whom the tour calls the ultimate authority on vitamins, fitness and nutrition. Career reinvention can be humiliating.

The following is an excerpt of a transcript from a recent episode of the Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC. It has been edited for length and clarity. Click here for the original.

Rachel Maddow: On the same day we got the news about the post-electoral career paths of the two biggest names in Republican politics. Come December, the erstwhile future of the party, former half-term Alaska governor and vice president candidate Sarah Palin will be speaking in front of a sold-out crowd at the College of the Ozarks in Missouri. It's a private Christian school that is now most famous for hosting Sarah Palin, as well for its official policy on lifestyle/sexuality.

Posted at wonkette.com, the college policy prohibits sexual abuse, sexual harassment, sexual assaults and also homosexual conduct--because, you know, it's all basically the same thing.

But the bigger Republican scheduling surprise of the day comes to us from the Bush family, with news that both former President George W. Bush and former first lady, Laura Bush, will be doing stints as motivational speakers, headlining multiple events for this couple, Tamara and Peter Lowe. They are described on their own Web site as the dynamic duo who create and produce the Get Motivated Seminar. It's also described them as having been married for 20 years. To add punch to that statement about their marriage, they have posted a picture of themselves online kissing at Getmotivated.com.

The event at which George W. Bush will be speaking is described online as a "motivational mega-show that packs more inspirational firepower than a stick of dynamite!" Because dynamite is very inspirational....

The former president will be speaking at the motivational tour for two of their dates in Texas, one in October and one in December. For the December event, look who he appears to be replacing. If you go to the Corpus Christi event for December 1st, you'll see that among those speakers listed there is Dr. Earl Mindell--described as the ultimate authority on vitamins, fitness and nutrition.

Then if you go to the San Antonio date, the next day, December 2nd, you'll see in Dr. Earl Mindell's place, it's George W. Bush. He has replaced the vitamin guy.

Laura Bush will be speaking for the same series, but she'll be speaking in separate cities from the former president. She's described on the motivational Web site as having been, quote, "recognized by Gallop Polls as one of the most popular and beloved first ladies in American history." They spelled Gallup wrong, which makes me sort of sad. As you explore the Web site a bit further, you will find a list of frequently asked questions for potential attendees of these motivational events including this one that caught my eye just because it was unexpected.

Quote, "I'm being pressured to attend. I don't think I need to be fixed." The answer posted on the Web site to this frequently asked question is, quote, "Neither do we. The get motivated seminar is designed for anyone who's interested in continuing to grow and achieve new levels of success. This is the perfect opportunity obtain even more of what you want in your life and less of what you don't."

Unless, of course, what you don't want is to be pressured to go to a motivational seminar. One other frequently asked question that they answer on their "Get Motivated" Web site is this, "Can I get the same information from reading books?"

The "Get Motivated" answer is, "Not even if you read a billion books." And this is really just the beginning of the George W. Bush legacy speaking tour. Who knows what kind of sales conferences and corporate team building excursions he might one day book. The future looks very bright.

Joining us now is Wayne Slater, senior political writer with the "Dallas Morning News" and co-author of the book, "Bush's Brain: How Karl Rove Made George W. Bush Presidential." Wayne, it's nice to see again. Thanks for joining us. ... I'm going to disclose my feelings about this if they are not already clear. This seems like a strange signal to send for the president's first big American multi-occasion speaking gigs. What signal do you think he's trying to send?

Wayne Slater: Look, this is the granddaddy of the sales motivation seminars. This is Babbitt meets the Super Bowl. I mean, this is about everybody you've ever thought you wanted to see, if you were sort of a middle-level salesman trying to sell stuff to people who don't want to buy what you're selling.

It's like - I think part of what George W. Bush is doing and you were alerted to it, this is really an introduction to the George W. Bush legacy project of which we are going to see a lot. Karl Rove is putting together a book. It's finished. It actually will be out early next year, explaining the Bush years.

Bush himself is going to prepare a book. There's a library being built, of course, in Dallas. This is part of the legacy tour. George Bush, who left office, as you may remember, with a couple unpopular wars and an economy going down the tubes, is going to be on the stage with winners, not losers. They are all winners up there.

Maddow: But he's going on stage at an event. I mean, spent so much time on this Web site today. Some of the things they promise people are going to learn at this event are how to irate customers into lifelong fans, the eight keys to communication and captivating public speaking. How to get your ideas accepted, acted upon and accomplished. It's seems like an odd thing for a very recent president to be aligning himself with.

Common Modern Farce

For decades now we see rogue and criminal political failures paraded in front of the lecterns, monitors and cameras of the media and shoved down our collective throats, while they attempt to reinvent themselves into memorable, motivational patriots. Their policies and politics are so self serving and their record of leadership so pathetic, that by stomping across the globe at very carefully chosen venues, they stroke the egos of the like minded and deluded who helped to put and keep them in power prior to their retirement. These losers are then rewarded for their pathetic (dis)service to our country, by being reinvented into "wise and learned" speakers, who are paid a ridiculous fee to spew everything in opposition of what they perpetrated on Americans and adverse to what they stood for while they were in office, where they had a true chance to make this a better country and instead degraded it.

We will be rid of this hypocrisy and nonsense, only when the bottom feeding, greedy circles who control the media and these brainwashing campaigns are ignored. So long as there is an audience for these false prophets, they will flourish in wealth and prestige, while the rest of us continue to suffer the consequences of their poor leadership and self serving actions while they held office.

We have watched nearly every disgraced and/or criminal failure of a politician in recent history, move forward to become TV commentators, motivational speakers and political strategists, with their faces plastered all over our TV screens and news outlets. When will we finally have enough and demand that these people be left lying in the pit of their failure, remembered for exactly what and who they really are? When will we disallow these shams to try to force history to remember them as valiant patriots who become recognized, honored and revered, based on their financial ability to buy their status and speak away the truths of their destructiveness to our very Republic?

When people finally stop watching, stop listening and stop drawing attention to these pathetic disgraces, we may see and end to the aggrandizing of people like the Ronald Reagans, G. W. Bush Jrs. and Dick Cheneys of this country! I, for one, am damned sick of seeing these criminals treated like celebrities and rewarded for having taken us all in a handbasket to hell, for their own financial gain!

He doesn't deserve big bucks
Posted by: LeonBNJ on Oct 23, 2009 4:16 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
That unlike his predecessors GWB is getting much less money for speeches is that he doesn't deserve it. He was grossly incompentant, a phoney (the real power was with VP Cheney) he got us into a horrible war in Iraq, failed to prevent 9/11, represented the richest Americans and not real Americans, his acceptance of torture on suspected terrorists, can't speak well at all and not seen as a leader with some connections. In the end, even business leaders are ignoring him and not willing to pay big bucks for him to speak to them as seen as not of any good for them. I suspect many fear protesters at any appearance by him, many in groups that would pay to have him speak are saying no due to his incompetence and unpopularity. I hope he doesn't get any more money paying gigs. He doesn't deserve it.

Maybe Dubya can motivate them Texans....

...he sure bellyflopped when he tried to motivate many of us non-Texans. But you gotta give him this: motivational speaking is not going to kill a whole bunch of people, not like his daddy´s big moneymaking job. George H.W. left the White House to join the Carlyle Group, where he shilled for Carlyle "defense" contractors like United Defense Industries among his dictator buddies in the Middle East. Now, that was money! Not some piddly 100k, money a half-talented rapper makes on a good weekend, but millions, millions and übermillions.

Old George H.W. was always a lot smarter and a lot more ruthless than his no-good firstborn son Dubya. A lot.

Rachel, I really understand that you too were incredulous, that this could even be a possibilty after all that he and his mis-Administration did. And my hat goes off to you for being able to keep your composure and not LYAO - but then again this really isn't funny. It is truly a sad thing to realize that the dumbing down of America continues, Bush as "a Public Speaker" - Puhlease! The man can just barely recite a grammatically correct sentence, and please don't let him deviate from the script! So America was the laughingstock of the world when the idiot was in the "White House" and now people are going to pay him to talk to other people's children - talk about brain washing, now that's a reason to allow your kids to take a day out of school!

Please that whole mis-Administration should have been brought up for IMPEACHMENT and jail-time! That there are those that still consider this man "their hero", well, I pray that one day they will be "conscious" and recognize the destruction that his mis-administration perpetrated on this nation and the ill will that he garnered throughout the world!

That's all this is, a bunch of asshole white zombies (with a Michael Steele like oreo thrown in for effect) showing their love for each other and seeing which one is the shallowest, most banal, boring, materialistic, war lovingest one. Let the contest begin.

It is like those dumb ass commercials touting CEO's as heroes. I think Americans view them all as sociopath monsters who are just societal leeches.

Just when our supply of fresh, new "Bushisms" have dried up, our former commander-in-chief and accidental stand-up comedian embarks on a public speaking career!

I can't wait for the news of the grammatical blunders, gaffes, and malapropisms. And this time, I won't be crying as well as laughing, because he'll be blundering along as a private citizen, and not the leader of the free world.

He was, and IS a Midas in reverse, changing everything he touches into SHIT.
He's like a high velocity bullet fired in a cave, bouncing off the walls, and a deadly danger to everyone in there.
His official portrait belongs alongside those of Benedict Arnold, Quisling,Hitler, well, you get the idea.
He needs to be seated on the Accused bench at The Hague.
Now, that'd motivate the hell out of ME.

The game is about one group attacking another group. If Maddow can keep pointing at the Republicans we are easily diverted from the real act which is that both parties serve the interest of the vaunted State and stand united. At this junction, it is the Democratic Party since it has control of the executive and congressional branches that should be held to account. We can be assured that Maddow will always point in the other direction. By the way, the woman who came on, that Tamara person woman (from the Motivational Thing), made Maddow look ridiculous. By the end of the program, Maddow said something idiotic like, "I know how uncomfortable coming on the show must have made you." Yeah right, the lady loved every minute of it and Maddow looked like a fool no matter how she tried to spin it her way.

There are still delayed dynamite charges going off around our own country and economy left behind just for us.
You pay for the priviledge of rubbing elbows or maybe just getting an eyefull and perhaps these useful skills will rub off onto you too!!
