Racism in America Doesn't Stop with Glenn Beck and His Fans -- It's in Our Health Care Debate Too

By Allison Kilkenny, True/Slant. Posted September 18, 2009.

As much as white Americans hate to admit it, race issues are always in play, whether we're talking about unequal health care access or Limbaugh's latest rant.

President Obama has long suggested that he would like to move beyond race. The question now is whether the country will let him.

He woke up on Wednesday to a rapidly intensifying debate about how his race factors into the broader discussion of civility in politics, a question prompted in part by former President Jimmy Carter's assertion Tuesday that racism was behind a Republican lawmaker's outburst against Mr. Obama last week as the president addressed a joint session of Congress. -- via Political Memo – As Race Debate Grows, Obama Steers Clear of It – NYTimes.com.

There is a prevalent misconception that racism is a self-contained problem. The myth goes like this: unless a hooded clansman is burning a cross on an African American family's lawn, the United States is not dealing with traditional racism. Our country has transcended race, since the election of President Obama, this myth says. Furthermore, race is only a relevant factor when something overtly hostile happens to our leader, who happens to be black (not that any of us notice, since we have transcended the problem of racism). The myth leaves no room for discussions of institutionalized racism, or the acceptance that race and racism are always in the room with us, and not just when President Obama delivers nuanced, thoughtful speeches about them.

Aside from the obvious targets of a Joe Wilson or Rush Limbaugh, the problem of racism infests every facet of the American experience, including the ongoing health care debate, though few politicians and journalists seem to realize racism is bigger than a few of Glenn Beck's disciples shouting something about Obama being Kenyan. "Race issue lingers over health care debate," an AP headline declares, but what it fails to mention is that the health care debate is also a race debate, and the racism issue does not belong exclusively to the province of zaftig, paranoid white Conservatives, flawed reasoning that comforts many liberals.

Another Reuters headline reads, "Healthcare, anger, and race," presenting the three nouns as if they are separate, autonomous entities. Such compartmentalization seems to suggest we can only talk about one issue (healthcare, anger, or race) at a time. We're either chatting about Obama's plans for health care reform, or we're snickering about those crazy birthers, but we're never talking about the same thing. However, in reality, the broken healthcare system and anger are subsidiaries of racism, and the three share a deeply interconnected relationship.

According to a study by researchers at Dartmouth, race and place of residence have a huge impact on the kind of medical treatment a patient receives. For example, blacks with diabetes or vascular disease are nearly five times more likely than whites to have a leg amputated. The widest racial gaps in mammogram rates within a state were in California and Illinois with a difference of 12 percentage points between the white rate and the black rate. The country's lowest rate for blacks — 48 percent in California — was 24 percentage points below the highest rate — 72 percent in Massachusetts. In all but two states, black diabetics were less likely than whites to receive annual hemoglobin testing. But blacks in Colorado (66 percent) were far less likely to be screened than those in Massachusetts (88 percent).

Excellent Article On the Institutional Side of Racism

Blacks and minorities are much more likely to have jobs that don't pay for health care ... Live in areas that don't have access to affordable fruits and vegetables for a healthy diet ...

Then there are the innumerable other areas where racism takes shape ...

The most recent being the mortgage debacle where more blacks and Hispanics got Sub-Prime and other dicey types of loans when they were perfectly well qualified for standard home loans. Many banks are being sued for targeting minorities with these loans but that is little consolation for those losing their houses.

The War on Drugs, the cuts to Pell Grants and other educational help, Clinton's Welfare Reform ... the list goes on and on ...

Foreign policy, domestic policy ... there is no area in which racism does not take shape in one way or another.

The idea that Obama will be showing favoritism to blacks and minorities by tackling these problems is the devil's own strategy for the neoliberal agenda that Obama now pursues ...

Everybody has a body.

Black or white- young or old -rich or poor.We all have a body and all of our blood is red.

Any nation that professes to be civil or moral needs to provide basic health care for the bodies of ALL of its citizens.

Naturally, anybody who doesn't agree 100% with a flawed government proposition has to be a die-hard racist, since the head of the government is a halfbreed.

Just like anybody who thinks ill of the policies of the state of Israel is a filthy anti-semite.

3 Other Resources to Talk About Race and Racism

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
We will never get to a "post racial society" or "become color blind" until we come to terms with race, racism and the legacy of slavery in this country. I would like to recommend three resources to begin that process. Number 1, there is a traveling museum exhibition, entitled:
"Race, Are We Really That Different?", the companion website is understandingrace.org. It was put together by the American Anthropological Association and the Minneapolis Science Museum and has won several awards. This is a hands on exhibit for all ages. Number 2, Understandingprejudice.org, where you can take the Implicit Association Test for free, online in about 10 minutes. There is a ton of research data to back this instrument up, since 1998. There was an article in Newsweek Magazine in June 25th of this year, "The Roots of Racism" by Raina Kelly, about the IAT. And finally, the 5 Dimensional Model of Culture by Hofstede, a Netherlands sociologist and his son at www.geert-hofstede.com . Read their book, in paperback in the revised edition on Amazon.com: Hofstede, Geert; Hofstede, Gert Jan (2005). Cultures and organizations: software of the mind (Revised and expanded 2nd ed.). New York: McGraw-Hill. ISBN 9780071439596. OCLC 57069196. Or use Inter-library loan at your local public library.

BLOOD IS THICKER THAN PARTY

My uncle Ervil LeBaron a.k.a. the "Mormon Manson" killed 28 people, including my cousin Rebecca. Ervil was also linked to the JFK assassination, and like Beck and Limbuagh, he was a religious hate-monger who thought blacks were only qualified to serve the white race.

If white supremacists whip up enough fear and hatred among the sheeple, Obama will likely be murdered, and then Biden will be president. Biden is OK, Biden is white, and white is right.

The reason white dems are dragging their footsies is because they're part of the white male conspiracy too. I mean let's face it, if a black man reforms health care and cleans up our economy, ALL the white men in politics are going to look BAD. BLOOD is thicker than PARTY.

White Supremeist lack Confidence in their own race
Posted by: Purple Girl on Sep 19, 2009 7:10 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
They are Cowards who are terrified that if required to compete (or exist) in a world where race hold no special priviledge or Rules (a truely Level palying field), they will fail.
In fact it seems they are terrified of Evolutionary forces which will render them extinct. why do you think they want to reduce the number of white woman from choosing Abortion and teaching their youth the ineffective 'Abstinence' doctrine, toincrease their numbers.
Any White who has any level of a real education knows, our race has never been '#1' in Demographic numbers. So freaking out because the Blacks and Browns are 'beginning' to our number us is a ridiculous ascertian.
What they really fear is the emergence of a Blended Race....Someone like Obama.
Interesting that it is not only Blacks who call him the 'First Black president' But also Whites. Apparently even though he is literally half and half, whites discount their races contribution. Apparently that 'black blood' is Stronger- Are they conceding to 'Survival of the Fittest'. Those white Genetics are just to weak to compete in this bi racial man? Not only are they conceding the biological Weakness of 'white genes' but also intellectually. Seems they think that White upbringing can not ward off the compulsion to give in to such things as 'reparations'.
Racist never say more about those they discriminate against than what they admit about themselves and their own lack of self confidence or respect.
I submit White Supremeists actually think little of the White race, themselves and their abilities- so they seek to find ways to stack the deck in their favor. same can be said for the male Sexists.
I take pride in the Fact Our new president is a perfect blend of the Best of Both Races (although I don't believe there are any real differences beyond the amount of melonia- but apparently they do).
Seems these White Racists are far more racist against their own then they are against any other.

Anyway, how is that if a person is half black and half white that he is classified or regarded as Black? At this rate the Whites will be in the minority before we know what happened with as prolific as the minorities are trying to gain a stronghold. They will have the voting power and run everything, we have to get more white immigrants coming into this country!

Somebody should tell this guy and his fellows that yelling "racism" today is like yelling "fire" in an empty theater.

I'm reminded of a high school geometry classmate all these years ago who knew only one axiom, "corresponding parts of congruent triangles are equal." He never got anything else right, but at the appropriate time, the teacher would point at Donnie and he would recite the only thing he knew about geometry.

He was right, but had no idea how or why. Neither does this guy, the liberal left, or black Americans in general.

America is Racist.
Posted by: frankly1 on Sep 19, 2009 9:55 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The majority of white people in America are fundamentally racist by nurture. They alter the tone of their voice when refering to "black people" as if "they" are a separate species. When relaying an event that involves a black person the fact that a black person is involved is always mentioned first usually in the negative. Prefixs such as "I'm not racist,but..." are frequently employed and the words them, they or those are used but only when talking to other white people. The separation is deep rooted, them and us, the differences always seized upun no matter how contrived or false. When most white people look at a non-white they first see differences and not the similarities. They can't help it. Racism ends when one person looks at another and sees a person and when filling out a form you answer the question for race with the word Human!

Anyone who has entertained the notion that the Civil War of 1860, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, the Reconstruction Era Amendments to the Constitution, the explosions of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, or the Civil Rights legislation of 1965 ended racism in this country has been living with their head under a very large pile of rocks.

Look at the color of our worst pockets of poverty. Look at the color of our highest paid working sector. Look at the color of our neighborhoods of wealth. That's racism, my friends, and racism remains the virus that still threatens the life of this sick nation. Racism prevents this society from being the democracy it claims to be.

You can be sure, if you have been a student of all the movements and conditions noted above, that the sickness of our racism would not remain closeted or disguised when a man who contains the colors of our two major races is very properly elected to be our president--and is attempting, finally, to govern in a truly democratic fashion. It has reared its ugly head, not shouting direct racial epithets, but by opposing everything that relates in any way to his administration. It's not a coincidence that the Republicans have earned the moniker of "Party of No" in the past eight short months. It's no wonder that they are now so concerned about deficits and debts but allowed an administration of their own party to build them to the highest levels in history without any questions, much less opposition.

And while we're at it, consider that Republicans are also the party that has been attempting unconstitutionally to mix their version of religion with our public affairs with a vengeance. Law, morals, and ethics mean little if anything to the Republicans whose promotions of ugly opposition we have been witnessing so sadly, and so dangerously.

The "Religious Right" is certainly "religious" and Republican, but it is not at all Christian in any respectable way. The ugly displays promoted and practiced by Republicans at last month's town hall meetings and in the streets of Washington have been typical of the ugliest history of religion. Religion, including Christianity, has an extremely ugly history. But the people who claim to be members of the Religious Right are very wrong because their goals and their behavior is so very antithetical to the Jesus story. Jesus exhorted his followers to feed the hungry and heal the sick. Republicans and their Religious Right have been viciously opposing health care reform. They are very willing to take federal money to "feed the hungry" when they can coral them in their church-like settings and preach at them. In short, those religious people want the public to support their religious activities--and then they call it their own charity.

After the Golden Rule and the Beatitudes, one of Jesus' most notable exhortation was: "Give God what is God's! Give Caesar what is Caesar's!" The Religious Right, the "Religious Wrong," carefully avoids any reference to that. It does not recognize the difference between God and Caesar--and they have absolutely no understanding of our Constitution that outlaws mixing the business of churches and government--for the protection, it must be importantly added, of both "church and state."

Single Payer Health Care would shut down the race issue too.

There are plenty of jobs that latinos, blacks, poor whites, etc ... do that offer no health care benefits. With single payer health care, no American would have to worry about lack of benefits from their jobs because those big insurance companies would no longer be tied to the companies and government would have to exercise responsibility. Currently, Obama and Congress are not doing their job but their allies and spokespeople are blaming race for their going GOP lite. I am sick and tired of such bullshit. There should have been no debate what with a strong Democratic majority in Congress and the White House and putting single payer on the table should have been number one. There are other important economic issues that need to be taken care of that require years. Dragging this faux "debate" on health care is WRONG.

Is every reference to race or color indicative of racism? Does every notice of gender a betrayal of "sexism?" How does a sociologist (the study of the study of human society and its institutions - cultures) or anthropologist (the general study of homo sapiens - man) then proceed? Must he be guilty of "insensitivity" to "celebrated diversity?"

If I am aware of Africa and its conditions, especially as has to do with who is responsible for those conditions, am I then a "racist?" If I know that Mexico's condition is due Mexicans, their practices, behavior, and culture, am I then a "racist?" Or is it a "culturist?"

Obama Now Promoting Hatred Of The Uninsured Poor
Posted by: jooljetkmae on Sep 20, 2009 10:40 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Now Obama is finally showing his true colors on this debate in his defense of the execrable Baucus bill:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_health_care_overhaul

It mandates that people buy insurance, which is based around highly regressive premiums, or they face fines of $750 or $950 for individuals, and fines of $1,500 and $3,800.

Here is an example of the class based hate Obama is using to defend this awful bill:

"What it's saying is, is that we're not going to have other people carrying your burdens for you anymore," said Obama."

In other words, it's the fault of the uninsured that health care costs are so high. It's not the fault of the health insurance, pharmaceutical and hospital industries, and the medical profession. It's not the fault of the chicken shit politicians who don't have te political courage to impose price controls on the costs of health care, which every civilized wealthy nation does.

No, it's the fault of the people who don't have insurance. Well, why don't they have insurance? They are either unemployed or underemployed, or they have an employer who doesn't provide it for them, and they simply can't afford the highly regressive premiums they are supposed to pay to get it.. So his plan calls for hitting a vulnerable population, which includes myself, with the most abominably regressive taxation proposal I have ever seen. And his appeal to this is that it doesn't amount to a tax increase. What that means is that it won't increase taxes on middle and upper income, so, therefore, it's "not" a tax increase.

Obama's appeal to support the awful Baucus bill is an appeal to class based hatred.

"Change" is really cool, isn't it?
