As If Limbaugh and Beck Weren't Bad Enough, the Granddaddy of Hate Radio Is Back on the Air

Bob Grant taught a generation of conservative talkers how to channel white rage, until a listener boycott helped push him off the air. Now he's back.

Here's a talk radio riddle: What do Glenn Beck's recent radio meltdown and the ongoing boycott against his television show have in common?

Answer: Both find echo and inspiration in the career of Bob Grant, the granddaddy of conservative hate radio who this week announced his return to New York's 77 WABC for one last go-around. Starting September 13, the frail octogenarian will host a Sunday show between noon and 2 p.m.

It's hard not to wonder if Grant's return to terrestrial radio is a bid to reclaim his identity. Not only has Glenn Beck borrowed Grant's two trademark catch phrases—"Get off my phone!" and "Sick, twisted freak"—this month Beck even reprised Grant's former role as the tallest whipping post for organized liberal outrage.

When colorofchange.org launched a campaign on August 4 targeting Beck's sponsors after he called the president a "racist" who hates "the white culture," the organization followed a path first blazed by Bob Grant's opponents during the mid-90s. It was then, on the cusp of the Internet age, that Grant became the first conservative broadcaster to trigger a sustained campaign against him with incendiary racial rhetoric. That campaign contributed to the eventual firing of Grant from WABC in 1996. It also made him a martyr for an entire generation of conservative talkers.

Grant was not the first conservative broadcasting firebrand. That distinction falls to Grant's mentor, Joe Pyne, a tough-talking one-legged ex-Marine who built a radio and tv career during the 50s and 60s on screeds against liberals and hippies, famously telling many of them to "go gargle with razor blades." But the bluster was largely an act. "Pyne was all shtick, a total gimmick," Larry King, who knew Pyne, has said. "He'd make fun of his guests and then go to dinner with them."

Grant's politics were less gimmicky. He studied Pyne closely while the two worked together in Los Angeles during the 1960s. In 1970, the year of his mentor's death, Grant relocated to New York. It was a propitious cultural moment for Grant's snarling Nixonian worldview. He arrived on the heels of the infamous "hard hat riot" on Wall Street, where 200 construction workers injured dozens in an attack on a student antiwar protest. Upon hearing the news, Nixon famously exclaimed, "Thank God for the hard hats!"

And thank God for Bob Grant, Nixon might have added. Grant's show became New York's megaphone for blue-collar white rage. He railed against the welfare state and slammed liberal politicians, peppering his insults with earthy southern Italian slang. He called blacks "sub-humans" and "savages" and invoked an earlier New York that never existed, "where everyone spoke English."

During his first months in New York, Grant's anger at the world around him was compounded by the fact that he despised the city and yearned to return to California. He found New York loud, filthy, and too crowded with non-whites and immigrants. Grant would later write that he hated New York so much that he "subconsciously wanted to get fired." Toward that end, Grant cranked up the hate in every direction. "I was becoming irascible on the air. Argumentative. Feisty. Impatient with the callers… I didn't care what anybody thought of me or my manners… I was telling people off left and right."

By the time New York started to grow on Grant, he realized something: not only had his spitfire persona failed to get him canned, his ratings were through the roof. So he kept up the act. For the next three decades, Grant's vitriolic rants against liberals and immigrants, originally fueled by self-hatred and disgust with New York, would inspire the next (and currently dominant) generation of conservative talkers. This includes Sean Hannity, who listened to Grant in Long Island during the 1970s, to Glenn Beck, who listened to him in New Haven during the early 1990s.

Grant's power and influence peaked during a 12-year run on WABC that straddled the Reagan and Clinton eras. Between 1984 and 1996, The Bob Grant Show owned the city's afternoon-drive slot. More than just a local media celebrity, Grant emerged as something of a conservative kingmaker in regional politics. With a huge following among the tri-state area's white working class, he was sometimes credited with swinging close elections. Dozens of gracious politicians and candidates called Grant's show to kiss his ring. The list includes presidents, senators, governors, and mayors. Rudy Giuliani was a frequent guest, who chuckled along with Grant when the host referred to Giuliani's black predecessor, David Dinkins, as "the men's room attendant at the 21 Club."

Then, in 1994, Grant learned that the world had changed on him. His years of dumping on blacks and immigrants had generated quietly mounting opposition. Unbeknown to Grant, angry listeners had begun recording his shows and passing the most incriminating tapes to journalists and media watchdogs like the New York-based Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR), founded by Jeff Cohen in 1986. Seemingly out of nowhere, Grant's vast archive of bile was thrown back in his face in the form of a coordinated campaign that he would later describe without irony as a "low-tech lynching."

So Where is Obama's FCC ? Where's the Plan to Confront Hate Speech?
Posted by: mmckinl on Aug 24, 2009 12:23 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
There isn't one ...

It is the same old duopoly strategy that the Powers That Be have used on the general public since forever ...

It's the rightfully reviled Right Wing Crazies vs. the sane and sober Obama Plan.

Unfortunately the Obama Plan is the crony corporate plan ... fascism light ... rewarding the Military Industrial Complex, Big Ag and Health Care Inc.

For the latest details on "health care reform" read this:

Insurers Set To Reap Financial Windfall From Health Care Reform

"Consumer advocates argue that a lower government minimum might quickly become the industry standard, placing a greater financial burden on patients and their families.

"These are a bad deal for consumers," said J. Robert Hunter, a former Texas insurance commissioner who works with the Consumer Federation of America.

Meanwhile, companies would probably see a benefit by providing less insurance "per premium dollar," Hunter said.

"It would be quite a windfall," said Wendell Potter, a former executive at Cigna insurance company who has become an industry whistle-blower."

~~~~
The public is once again being played ... Corporations will once again reap another windfall ...
They don't want to reform media, playing on public owned airwaves, because it suits their purpose of a big smokescreen for their looting.
Americans are ignorant, hate filled, bigots.
The rest of the world thinks this. Why?
Because American media is ignorant, hate filled, bigotry.
Now, most Americans are moderate, liberal, and reasonable. But you'll rarely see these people working in media or elected to office. The divide between what Americans are, think, and feel, is not reflected in the media and sure as fuck isn't what moves Washington. What I mean is; rather like the massive gap between rich and poor there is also a giant gap between what Washington and the media say is relevant and what the majority of Americans say.
In a nation where only people like Glen Beck qualify as 'real Americans' one has to wonder just how much the mainstream establishment hates the rest of us.
Americans love their neighbors but in private many are jealous and hateful. Bob Grant has a loyal audience of those who did not love their neighbors and have moved to a white enclave. His views should be given airtime as long as they are non-violent. He will awaken those that imagine that we are in a post racial period. Bob Grants emotional audience proves nothing has changed.
I can't figure out if Giuliani is a genuine racist or is a politically pandering racist. His daddy was a knuckle crusher for the mob and often a Black man accompanied him on his "job". Maybe that's how he sees blacks, as just a criminal knee buster and nothing more. And that was quite evident on how he behaved towards Black folks during his administration.
It was clear, in any event, that racism played a major role in his defeat of Dinkins.
imo, the city was worse off with Giuliani.
Why is he back on the same station WABC in NY?
Who owns this station?
And how long do we give him before we start the campaign to get him off the air.
AND we need to include Beck and Limbaugh this time too.
Let people pay to hear their garbage. They can have their own town meetings and charge for the privilege of hearing hate spewed into their breathing space. I like my air free from hate and lies.
Keep the pressure on the advertisers.
The First Amendment isn't a carte blanche that gives anyone the right to spew disinformation and hate speech, but that's what the right does routinely. It's time stop it.
Obama needs to instruct the FCC to begin monitoring fining and shutting down these outlets. It's not a question of restricting free speech; it's simply a matter of counting the number of blatant lies and bogus "facts" being broadcast, then issuing the proper punishment. The conservative tub-thumpers would file lawsuits, but let them. The Supreme Court should be in no hurry to hear the cases.
Unfortunately, right wing hate radio sells
At least that's what a friend of mine discovered when he broadcast as a conservative in St Paul, MN back in the late Sixties.
When he later went back to talk radio in the Seventies after earning a law degree as a liberal he found positions hard to come by. On one radio station the management would not let him host as show without a conservative co-host to keep him in line. One of his co-hosts at the time was the station's leading sports announcer who was notably ignorant on all the issues except sports!
My friend has, to this day, a hate letter from the then-CEO of a major grocery store chain to the station manager threatening to pull all advertising if "that young Communist" was not fired. Shortly thereafter he gave management a reason to fire him.
He was fired for shouting "Sieg Heil" in response to a caller who answered in the affirmative to his question, "If the government ordered you to push Jews into ovens would you do it?"
He is retiring from his legal practice now but talk radio is his true love and calling. However he had only sporadic success as a liberal talker. He has told me he has toyed with going back into talk radio as a conservative, but knows his heart would not be in it.
It's funny (not haha), that the mere exposure of Janet Jacksons' breast should be a cause of faux righteous indignation, the FCC wanted to fine her, calls for banning and for which she made the requisite mea culpa and still many were not satisfied! Yet the loud righteous right continues to promote hate, encourage violence, promulgate lies as truth, always proclaiming their 1st Amendment right to free speech!
Where is the FCC, MIA perhaps? The FCC which has not had teeth due to underfunding and the continued installation of Corporate hacks that refuse to do their real jobs unless it goes against what the Oligarchy wants! These loud-mouthed know nothings excite the masses of their followers to violence, even as these right wingers are promoting a Corporate Agenda that doesn't include the very people they are co-opting to the cause!
So, the scumball returns. No surprises there. He just adds to the scoundrels who are spreading the pure bilge flowing against health care reform and targeting the Dupes, Cretins, and Lunatics who will run out to obediently disrupt the townhall meetings discussing health care reform.
The plutocrats who own and control the military-industrial-media-governmental-judicial complex are determined to destroy any effort to undermine their happy position at the top of the income pyramid,incessantly grasping all the wealth for themselves, waving flags and exhorting all the rest of us to work hard, to enjoy our absolute freedom to fend for ourselves in all circumstances, and to keep government out of our personal lives as well as out of the American-way of the free, unfettered corporate market--- that sanctum sanctorum of our Gilded Age II.
We KNOW what the problems are.
It's no mistake "talk" radio has become a propoganda tool for right wingnuts to hypnotize those with limited mentalities, and that fox noise is part of an illegal monopoly, owned by an Australian scumbag, who obtained American citizenship under false pretenses. This was brought about over the years through crooked politics and a deliberate and illegal takeover of OUR airwaves. They belong to US, remember?
Reversing this situation is as easy as replacing neocon crooks in the FCC, reestablishing the authority of our anti-trust laws, and seizing murdoch's illegal empire and tossing his sorry ass out of our country. This can all be done with a minimum of fuss and within the law.
All we need are those in Washington, from the President on down to act in OUR behalf for a change. They need to be encouraged and pestered on a daily basis for this to happen. We all know they wouldn't do a goddam thing without pressure from ordinary citizens
Nothing so clearly
Nothing so clearly illustrates the problem of Media Consolidation than THIS . I was once an avid listener to WABC's morning Radio show of Curis and Kuby . Curtis was Curtis Sliwa of Guardian Angels fame while Kuby was the well know Leftist lawyer . The show had BOTH points of view presented Curtis was Right Wing and Pro Bush ,while Kuby was left wing and anti Bush and Guilliani . AND THEN WABC was bought by Clear Channel the same people who would not play the Dixie Chicks for their remark about Bush . The show was immediately told that it would NOT be renewed and their replacement would be Don Imus , This was STRANGE since in head to head competition it had beaten Imus ,
As final insult to those wanting a semblance of balance Kuby was told NOT to broadcast for the remainder of the shows contract .
This was nothing more than a right wing Corporation imposing its will to deny an opposing Voice Period!
We need to revisit the ownership rules and possibly reinstate the dreaded Fairness Doctrine . Ever notice that Rush NEVER has an Opposing point of view on his show . He screens his callers and on the rare occasion
a liberal slips through he challenges their identity as being Bogus . I heard one instance where he kept accusing the caller of not being who he said he was : Screaming at him "Tell us WHO you REALLY are " and finally cutting him off BECAUSE he would NOT identify himself . Sean Hannity got rid of his liberal punching bag .
After Obama loses the 2012 Presidental election (for being to Moderate) and we never pass any meaningful legislation (like the Fairness Doctrine and Health Care Reform) we will be left again, with no voice within the Political landscape. For six years the Repugs passed every single piece of crap bill they wanted and now we play softball. Why are we so nice? We will pay dearly for this missed opportunity.......When the Cons recapture the House and maybe Senate (and they will at some point) they will roll back benefits for S.S., Medicare leave us with all the rising costs. And we will say, "Why didn't we do anything about this when we had power?) Our party sucks right now!
What's a matter Boys scared of a Lil' competition?
Repug males fear equality in competition and cry everytime they lose a special priviledge.
Rush is terrified and Beck is Hyterical.
They have no confidence in their own gender or race to compete if the deck is not pre stacked in their favor.
Terrified by the prospects of a 'Wise Latina' as an associate SCOTUS judge?Why, don't they think the White male Cheif Justice and the other white males of the court can subdue, or defeat, her? She will ultimatley decide all cases,single handedly,and they will be powerless against her?
Someone is attributing some horrendous powers to a Minority and admitting their belief of weakness in the 'majority'.
Why do they think so little of themselves and the other members of their cohort Group? What else could it be causing this irradic behavior but Fear and Self Loathing?
Rush quivers in fear like a jello mold and Beck Cries like a lil girl. Not attributes indicative of confidence or high regard for ones own groups abilities.
And here, the well-reasoned, temperate, and tolerant rhetoric of the political left will once again be promulated. Do read on, oh searcher for the truth.
"If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind."
If your rhetorical enemy is so vile, so stupid and ignorant, so ridiculous, why do you want him silenced? Isn't he proof of everything you might say against your conservative political enemies? Doesn't your need to silence him betray something concerning the character of your own opinion?
It does for me.
Part of me can become quite frustrated when constantly bombarded with the vile tone from self-anointed talking head-demigods be they from red states, blue state, donkey or elephant.
The vitriolic rhetoric spewed on this vital conversation respecting providing health care for Americans is as deafening as it is energy draining. Might it be possible for us to turn off this suffocating confluence of sound allowing us time and opportunity to digest and from that place draw some initial rational observations…?
Reverberating though throughout this health insurance dialogues is the proverb … it is always darkest before the dawn … for me a clear indication when we are facing prolonged difficulties this saying can help us to keep going that bit longer. Until the very end the “noise-machines” will churn-out at ever increasing decibel levels information of all color, degree, type, true, false all screaming for our attention.
There is a positive moral to this story … as there are many stories of last minute success when people have been on the point of giving up … that’s the point … don’t ever give up HOPE.
Respectfully,
no liberal, moderate, or truly independent alternatives. Air America started ok but the real reason they failed had nothing to do with money alone but they way they managed their company. There was too much infighting and instead of just reacting to the rightwing radio stations, they could have also gone on the offensive with their progressive ideology. I've said this same thing before and I see that it still holds true. It's a complete shame that even the so-called "liberals" and "progressives" don't even think of taking the progressive ideology and going on the offensive with it. Most blogs I read nothing but infighting amongst the progressives and some of the partisan Obama supporters mistaking progressive independents as Republicans. That is why I get pissed off at the idiots on this and other forums. The rightwing talk radio is only a symptom of the growing number of disgruntled Americans who are rendered powerless and hopeless and left out by even the supposedly "progressives" and "liberals" and then finding themselves just wanting something to share their anger. How many of you on this site read Thomas Frank's "What's the Matter With Kansas?" Not many and I doubt that most of you had read George Lakoff's works or actually read his articles on this and other sites. Instead, it's the same old habit of so-called "liberals" and "progressives" condescending poor voters who are unable to identify with progressives but they're not dumb. They're just fed up like most of us. How long do you people think that Obama will be able to hold on to just enough support to win a second term? To tell you the truth, the liberals, independents, and moderates have already left the Obama building en masse because nothing Obama is doing is progressive or liberal. We'll see just how well all this bullshit triangulation works out in 2010 and 2012 because if history is any lesson, without a third party ala Ross Perot, this party shall collapse.
People are free to Boycott whomever they want.
But the dirty little secret about boycotts is that they don't change the minds fans. Which in the case of Limbaugh and the rest is legion.
Is the point of all this boycotting to change public opinion in a progressive way, or is it just to feel good about yourself because you did "something"?
Those Fans are still out there, and they still vote. A successful boycott only entrenches a fanatics belief system. As progressives, we have the bad habit of only preaching to the choir.
Real progress means turning a non-Progressive "ON" to the merits of our values.
That's the only noble challenge we have. The rest is PR bullshit.
A PRAYER by Max Ehrmann, author of Desiderata
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Let me do my work each day;
and if the darkened hours
of despair overcome me, may I
not forget the strength
that comforted me in the
desolation of other times. May I
still remember the bright
hours that found me walking
over the silent hills of my
childhood, or dreaming on the
margin of a quiet river,
when a light glowed within me,
and I promised my early God
to have courage amid the
tempests of the changing years.
Spare me from bitterness
and from the sharp passions of
unguarded moments. May
I not forget that poverty and
riches are of the spirit.
Though the world know me not,
may my thoughts and actions
be such as shall keep me friendly
with myself. Lift my eyes
from the earth, and let me not
forget the uses of the stars.
Forbid that I should judge others
lest I condemn myself.
Let me not follow the clamor or
the world, but walk calmly
in my path. Give me a few friends
who will love me for what
I am; and keep ever burning
before my vagrant steps
the kindly light of hope. And
though age and infirmity overtake
me, and I come not within
sight of the castle of my dreams,
teach me still to be thankful
for life, and for time's olden
memories that are good and
sweet; and may the evening's
twilight find me gentle still.
Do we not have the freedom to listen or not?
Get over it..the selling of angry unhappy secular socialism is tough and sooo negative people just avoid it...like this silly crybaby article from a person sure to defend free speech when it suits them.
What a waste of time and effort...way too many articles like this on this smear and cry Forum.
The main thing is not to own a TV. Having high self esteem I keep my eyes on the good work my hands are doing and as somebody said the pictures are better on radio. Who the hell is Glen Beck?
I have to admit I have rarely caught any Air America-- why waste left wing time that I could be listening to NPR.
And sometimes I listen to the Savage Limbaugh stuff-- you have to keep track of what the enemy is saying or you lose your chance to answer it, right? (oops sorry, left?) And I listen to Michael Medved, and sometimes Prager (the prediger, even though I'm a treetheist myself).
I was sorry someone (above) crudely cursed out the poet, Ehrmann, whose long series of lines was refreshing amid the mean battling, and yes I read his entire thing.
I also listen to serious long-form music (misnamed "classy/cool" by those who despise it) even while feeling guilty about letting the debate rage unheeded and losing my place in line to refute the assholes.
So Where is Obama's FCC ? Where's the Plan to Confront Hate Speech?
Posted by: mmckinl on Aug 24, 2009 12:23 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
There isn't one ...
It is the same old duopoly strategy that the Powers That Be have used on the general public since forever ...
It's the rightfully reviled Right Wing Crazies vs. the sane and sober Obama Plan.
Unfortunately the Obama Plan is the crony corporate plan ... fascism light ... rewarding the Military Industrial Complex, Big Ag and Health Care Inc.
For the latest details on "health care reform" read this:
Insurers Set To Reap Financial Windfall From Health Care Reform
"Consumer advocates argue that a lower government minimum might quickly become the industry standard, placing a greater financial burden on patients and their families.
"These are a bad deal for consumers," said J. Robert Hunter, a former Texas insurance commissioner who works with the Consumer Federation of America.
Meanwhile, companies would probably see a benefit by providing less insurance "per premium dollar," Hunter said.
"It would be quite a windfall," said Wendell Potter, a former executive at Cigna insurance company who has become an industry whistle-blower."
~~~~

The public is once again being played ... Corporations will once again reap another windfall ...

They don't want to reform media, playing on public owned airwaves, because it suits their purpose of a big smokescreen for their looting.

The rest of the world thinks this. Why?

Because American media is ignorant, hate filled, bigotry.

Now, most Americans are moderate, liberal, and reasonable. But you'll rarely see these people working in media or elected to office. The divide between what Americans are, think, and feel, is not reflected in the media and sure as fuck isn't what moves Washington. What I mean is; rather like the massive gap between rich and poor there is also a giant gap between what Washington and the media say is relevant and what the majority of Americans say.

In a nation where only people like Glen Beck qualify as 'real Americans' one has to wonder just how much the mainstream establishment hates the rest of us.

His views should be given airtime as long as they are non-violent. He will awaken those that imagine that we are in a post racial period. Bob Grants emotional audience proves nothing has changed.

I can't figure out if Giuliani is a genuine racist or is a politically pandering racist. His daddy was a knuckle crusher for the mob and often a Black man accompanied him on his "job". Maybe that's how he sees blacks, as just a criminal knee buster and nothing more. And that was quite evident on how he behaved towards Black folks during his administration.

It was clear, in any event, that racism played a major role in his defeat of Dinkins.

imo, the city was worse off with Giuliani.

The First Amendment isn't a carte blanche that gives anyone the right to spew disinformation and hate speech, but that's what the right does routinely. It's time stop it.

Obama needs to instruct the FCC to begin monitoring fining and shutting down these outlets. It's not a question of restricting free speech; it's simply a matter of counting the number of blatant lies and bogus "facts" being broadcast, then issuing the proper punishment. The conservative tub-thumpers would file lawsuits, but let them. The Supreme Court should be in no hurry to hear the cases.

Unfortunately, right wing hate radio sells

At least that's what a friend of mine discovered when he broadcast as a conservative in St Paul, MN back in the late Sixties.

When he later went back to talk radio in the Seventies after earning a law degree as a liberal he found positions hard to come by. On one radio station the management would not let him host as show without a conservative co-host to keep him in line. One of his co-hosts at the time was the station's leading sports announcer who was notably ignorant on all the issues except sports!

My friend has, to this day, a hate letter from the then-CEO of a major grocery store chain to the station manager threatening to pull all advertising if "that young Communist" was not fired. Shortly thereafter he gave management a reason to fire him.

He was fired for shouting "Sieg Heil" in response to a caller who answered in the affirmative to his question, "If the government ordered you to push Jews into ovens would you do it?"

He is retiring from his legal practice now but talk radio is his true love and calling. However he had only sporadic success as a liberal talker. He has told me he has toyed with going back into talk radio as a conservative, but knows his heart would not be in it.

It's funny (not haha), that the mere exposure of Janet Jacksons' breast should be a cause of faux righteous indignation, the FCC wanted to fine her, calls for banning and for which she made the requisite mea culpa and still many were not satisfied! Yet the loud righteous right continues to promote hate, encourage violence, promulgate lies as truth, always proclaiming their 1st Amendment right to free speech!

Where is the FCC, MIA perhaps? The FCC which has not had teeth due to underfunding and the continued installation of Corporate hacks that refuse to do their real jobs unless it goes against what the Oligarchy wants! These loud-mouthed know nothings excite the masses of their followers to violence, even as these right wingers are promoting a Corporate Agenda that doesn't include the very people they are co-opting to the cause!

The plutocrats who own and control the military-industrial-media-governmental-judicial complex are determined to destroy any effort to undermine their happy position at the top of the income pyramid,incessantly grasping all the wealth for themselves, waving flags and exhorting all the rest of us to work hard, to enjoy our absolute freedom to fend for ourselves in all circumstances, and to keep government out of our personal lives as well as out of the American-way of the free, unfettered corporate market--- that sanctum sanctorum of our Gilded Age II.

We KNOW what the problems are.
It's no mistake "talk" radio has become a propoganda tool for right wingnuts to hypnotize those with limited mentalities, and that fox noise is part of an illegal monopoly, owned by an Australian scumbag, who obtained American citizenship under false pretenses. This was brought about over the years through crooked politics and a deliberate and illegal takeover of OUR airwaves. They belong to US, remember?
Reversing this situation is as easy as replacing neocon crooks in the FCC, reestablishing the authority of our anti-trust laws, and seizing murdoch's illegal empire and tossing his sorry ass out of our country. This can all be done with a minimum of fuss and within the law.
All we need are those in Washington, from the President on down to act in OUR behalf for a change. They need to be encouraged and pestered on a daily basis for this to happen. We all know they wouldn't do a goddam thing without pressure from ordinary citizens

Nothing so clearly

Nothing so clearly illustrates the problem of Media Consolidation than THIS . I was once an avid listener to WABC's morning Radio show of Curis and Kuby . Curtis was Curtis Sliwa of Guardian Angels fame while Kuby was the well know Leftist lawyer . The show had BOTH points of view presented Curtis was Right Wing and Pro Bush ,while Kuby was left wing and anti Bush and Guilliani . AND THEN WABC was bought by Clear Channel the same people who would not play the Dixie Chicks for their remark about Bush . The show was immediately told that it would NOT be renewed and their replacement would be Don Imus , This was STRANGE since in head to head competition it had beaten Imus ,
As final insult to those wanting a semblance of balance Kuby was told NOT to broadcast for the remainder of the shows contract .
This was nothing more than a right wing Corporation imposing its will to deny an opposing Voice Period!
We need to revisit the ownership rules and possibly reinstate the dreaded Fairness Doctrine . Ever notice that Rush NEVER has an Opposing point of view on his show . He screens his callers and on the rare occasion
a liberal slips through he challenges their identity as being Bogus . I heard one instance where he kept accusing the caller of not being who he said he was : Screaming at him "Tell us WHO you REALLY are " and finally cutting him off BECAUSE he would NOT identify himself . Sean Hannity got rid of his liberal punching bag .

After Obama loses the 2012 Presidental election (for being to Moderate) and we never pass any meaningful legislation (like the Fairness Doctrine and Health Care Reform) we will be left again, with no voice within the Political landscape. For six years the Repugs passed every single piece of crap bill they wanted and now we play softball. Why are we so nice? We will pay dearly for this missed opportunity.......When the Cons recapture the House and maybe Senate (and they will at some point) they will roll back benefits for S.S., Medicare leave us with all the rising costs. And we will say, "Why didn't we do anything about this when we had power?) Our party sucks right now!

Terrified by the prospects of a 'Wise Latina' as an associate SCOTUS judge?Why, don't they think the White male Cheif Justice and the other white males of the court can subdue, or defeat, her? She will ultimatley decide all cases,single handedly,and they will be powerless against her?
Someone is attributing some horrendous powers to a Minority and admitting their belief of weakness in the 'majority'.
Why do they think so little of themselves and the other members of their cohort Group? What else could it be causing this irradic behavior but Fear and Self Loathing?
Rush quivers in fear like a jello mold and Beck Cries like a lil girl. Not attributes indicative of confidence or high regard for ones own groups abilities.

And here, the well-reasoned, temperate Left . . .

And here, the well-reasoned, temperate, and tolerant rhetoric of the political left will once again be promulated. Do read on, oh searcher for the truth.

"If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind."

If your rhetorical enemy is so vile, so stupid and ignorant, so ridiculous, why do you want him silenced? Isn't he proof of everything you might say against your conservative political enemies? Doesn't your need to silence him betray something concerning the character of your own opinion?

It does for me.

Thanks for the "update" on Bob Grant of whom I never heard.

I wonder whether his loyal listeners would be so loyal if they were required to publicly register that they are fans?

If he and his ilk were assigned to write a new pledge of allegiance. I wonder which items it would have? One shutters at the thought.

it is always darkest before the dawn

Part of me can become quite frustrated when constantly bombarded with the vile tone from self-anointed talking head-demigods be they from red states, blue state, donkey or elephant.

The vitriolic rhetoric spewed on this vital conversation respecting providing health care for Americans is as deafening as it is energy draining. Might it be possible for us to turn off this suffocating confluence of sound allowing us time and opportunity to digest and from that place draw some initial rational observations…?

Reverberating though throughout this health insurance dialogues is the proverb … it is always darkest before the dawn … for me a clear indication when we are facing prolonged difficulties this saying can help us to keep going that bit longer. Until the very end the “noise-machines” will churn-out at ever increasing decibel levels information of all color, degree, type, true, false all screaming for our attention.

There is a positive moral to this story … as there are many stories of last minute success when people have been on the point of giving up … that’s the point … don’t ever give up HOPE.

Respectfully,

no liberal, moderate, or truly independent alternatives. Air America started ok but the real reason they failed had nothing to do with money alone but they way they managed their company. There was too much infighting and instead of just reacting to the rightwing radio stations, they could have also gone on the offensive with their progressive ideology. I've said this same thing before and I see that it still holds true. It's a complete shame that even the so-called "liberals" and "progressives" don't even think of taking the progressive ideology and going on the offensive with it. Most blogs I read nothing but infighting amongst the progressives and some of the partisan Obama supporters mistaking progressive independents as Republicans. That is why I get pissed off at the idiots on this and other forums. The rightwing talk radio is only a symptom of the growing number of disgruntled Americans who are rendered powerless and hopeless and left out by even the supposedly "progressives" and "liberals" and then finding themselves just wanting something to share their anger. How many of you on this site read Thomas Frank's "What's the Matter With Kansas?" Not many and I doubt that most of you had read George Lakoff's works or actually read his articles on this and other sites. Instead, it's the same old habit of so-called "liberals" and "progressives" condescending poor voters who are unable to identify with progressives but they're not dumb. They're just fed up like most of us. How long do you people think that Obama will be able to hold on to just enough support to win a second term? To tell you the truth, the liberals, independents, and moderates have already left the Obama building en masse because nothing Obama is doing is progressive or liberal. We'll see just how well all this bullshit triangulation works out in 2010 and 2012 because if history is any lesson, without a third party ala Ross Perot, this party shall collapse.

People are free to Boycott whomever they want.

But the dirty little secret about boycotts is that they don't change the minds fans. Which in the case of Limbaugh and the rest is legion.

Is the point of all this boycotting to change public opinion in a progressive way, or is it just to feel good about yourself because you did "something"?

Those Fans are still out there, and they still vote. A successful boycott only entrenches a fanatics belief system. As progressives, we have the bad habit of only preaching to the choir.

Real progress means turning a non-Progressive "ON" to the merits of our values.

That's the only noble challenge we have. The rest is PR bullshit.

A PRAYER by Max Ehrmann, author of Desiderata

Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Let me do my work each day;

and if the darkened hours

of despair overcome me, may I

not forget the strength

that comforted me in the

desolation of other times. May I

still remember the bright

hours that found me walking

over the silent hills of my

childhood, or dreaming on the

margin of a quiet river,

when a light glowed within me,

and I promised my early God

to have courage amid the

tempests of the changing years.

Spare me from bitterness

and from the sharp passions of

unguarded moments. May

I not forget that poverty and

riches are of the spirit.

Though the world know me not,

may my thoughts and actions

be such as shall keep me friendly

with myself. Lift my eyes

from the earth, and let me not

forget the uses of the stars.

Forbid that I should judge others

lest I condemn myself.

Let me not follow the clamor or

the world, but walk calmly

in my path. Give me a few friends

who will love me for what

I am; and keep ever burning

before my vagrant steps

the kindly light of hope. And

though age and infirmity overtake

me, and I come not within

sight of the castle of my dreams,

teach me still to be thankful

for life, and for time's olden

memories that are good and

sweet; and may the evening's

twilight find me gentle still.

Do we not all have free speech?
Do we not have liberal (secular socialist) radio talk shows?
Do we not have the freedom to listen or not?

Get over it..the selling of angry unhappy secular socialism is tough and sooo negative people just avoid it...like this silly crybaby article from a person sure to defend free speech when it suits them.

What a waste of time and effort...way too many articles like this on this smear and cry Forum.

Positive Radio

The main thing is not to own a TV. Having high self esteem I keep my eyes on the good work my hands are doing and as somebody said the pictures are better on radio. Who the hell is Glen Beck?

I have to admit I have rarely caught any Air America-- why waste left wing time that I could be listening to NPR.

And sometimes I listen to the Savage Limbaugh stuff-- you have to keep track of what the enemy is saying or you lose your chance to answer it, right? (oops sorry, left?) And I listen to Michael Medved, and sometimes Prager (the prediger, even though I'm a treetheist myself).

I was sorry someone (above) crudely cursed out the poet, Ehrmann, whose long series of lines was refreshing amid the mean battling, and yes I read his entire thing.

I also listen to serious long-form music (misnamed "classy/cool" by those who despise it) even while feeling guilty about letting the debate rage unheeded and losing my place in line to refute the assholes.
