Putting an End to Glenn Beck's Racist Antics and Apocalyptic Rhetoric

The Fox host's attacks on Obama are beyond the pale. How much longer will his advertisers, like GEICO and Proctor & Gamble, accept this?

Shock jock and Fox host Glenn Beck, who has built a career out of stoking the paranoid delusions of the right-wing fringe, managed to outdo himself last week when he accused President Obama of hating white people.

"The President has exposed himself as a guy … over and over and over again … who has a deep-seated hatred for white people … or the white culture…. I don't know what it is" Beck said on Fox and Friends.

Beck's wildly offensive charge, spurred by the recent controversy over the arrest of Henry Louis Gates, Jr., was the latest low in a longstanding conservative narrative that ludicrously paints white men as the victims of "reverse racism" and oppression by minorities.  Beck's egregious attack has prompted Color of Change to launch a campaign urging Beck's advertisers -- which include GEICO and Proctor & Gamble -- to stop sponsoring the shock jock's divisive hate-mongering.

It's about time. Beck's attack on Obama shocked even fellow conservatives. One of the hosts of Fox and Friends Brian Kilmeade – who recently made headlines by essentially arguing for eugenics – pointed to a pretty major flaw in Beck's reasoning: for an alleged racist, Obama sure spends a lot of time around white people, who make up the bulk of his administration.

Taken the tiniest bit aback by Kilmeade's rather incontrovertible logic, Beck tried to backpedal. Instead, he managed to say something even more offensive:

"I’m not saying he doesn't like white people. I'm saying he has a problem. This guy is, I believe, a racist."

This is hardly the first time that Beck's shameless scramble for ratings has led the talk show host to abuse logic and attack the President with thinly veiled racism. Or even the first time he's done so this month: a few weeks ago, Beck essentially claimed that Obama plans to surreptitiously impose reparations on an unsuspecting American public through his health care plan. The fact that there is no such thing as an "Obama health care plan" -- the President has laid out preferences but has not issued a "plan" -- was perhaps the least disingenuous part of Beck's accusation, which basically implied that Obama would betray the interests of White Americans to push the interests of Black Americans.

Beck has made a hobby out of using extreme and inflammatory theatrics to attack Obama. In a recent disturbing example, Beck poured water out of a gasoline can on a volunteer, screaming that Obama's position  on immigration spelled America's doom.

So far, Beck's hateful sermons have triggered almost non-stop condemnation from liberal circles and even the mainstream media. Beck's latest outburst was excoriated across the web and on cable news. On Sunday, CNN media critic Howard Kurtz wondered if Beck should be fired over his latest comments.

How come when people present an opposing question on something like the presidents birth certificate, they are called racist or birthers or right wing nut cases? Everything any person in our government does or says should be questioned because that is our system, we have that right. If the left were calling this out on John McCain if he had won the election, this would be OK though. As far as President Obama goes, all he has to do is show his long form birth certificate and this all goes away. And, as far as the president being a racist, he is. He proved that when his buddy Gates got arrested for harassing a police officer and pulled the race card on that officer. The President, saying he did not know the whole story immediately said the white police officer and the department acted stupidly. Why, Because his friend is an ass? Beck and the rest have every right under the 1st amendment to question all of it. Listening to the trash coming back like this article, I guess we no longer have any rights in this country. Welcome to the USSR. (United States Socialist Republic)

I'm not sure whom to hate and loathe more here; the network who would call its exploitation of this mentally and emotionally delusional dry drunkard news and legitimate opinion, or the sponsors who would take advantage of the sheep who faithfully tune in to watch this delusional lunatic rant and rave maniacally to shamelessly hawk their crummy crap.

This why I abhor and avoid cable "news" shows, and their opportunist sponsors. They are the last people on the face of the Earth I trust to inform me about anything.

Racists know that their attitude is unacceptable. Their two defenses against criticism are projection and scapegoating, processes long associated with abuse of substances and/or other creatures.

Beck's "preaching to the choir"--he doesn't care what your/our constituency thinks, he has plenty of like-minded bigots to keep the sponsors happy.

Actually Beck is right.. Obama;s connections suggest anti white tendencies. His wife is a very good example. His reaction to the Gates affair is another.

The one thing is apparent, white as more tollerent than Obama seems to be!

While this doesn't sit well with many, it's pretty clear to most!

If Fox News weren't available, Alternet would not be having articles to publish just like rightwing sites would not be attacking CBS and CNN if those two channels exist. Why do both sides call for censorship? If you don't like something, don't watch it.

When one reflects on the birth of the SCLC, SNCC, the SDS, the Montgomery bus boycott, it comes to seem puzzling why similar widespread civil action has not been born as a result of the comments by Beck and his ilk.
The absence of such action is self incriminating: do Americans really oppose the hateful incendiaries? Is it rather that Americans endorse the view?
Having examined racism in the States from its Colonial period to its most recent conspicuous demonstrations, I can only conclude that Americans, generally speaking, endorse the racism ....

For those that want to ask "what about an opposite opinion?", I want to agree with you however, may I qualify that with "what about an honest, intelligent, reasoned opinion"? Glenn Beck and his narrow-minded cronies, are attempting to present as fact - erroneous, twisted, provocative, lies period - their appeal to the worst prejudices, fears, and unreasonable hatred - is not "news" - it is a dumbing down and playing on the worst instinct of too many Americans that have been disenfranchised, and have no one to blame - so they are given a target by these small minded white men! Yes, these men who have not a care for the average white man whose bank account is not similar to their own!

And while I may be angry with their ignorance, I am just as angry with the people that listen to their bs and believe the obfuscations, even as they themselves don't realize that they too are voting against their own interests every time they follow their "leaders"! Do you people not see what is going on, you are being lied to to support an agenda that in the end will work against you - wake up and start paying attention

I tell them to change it or I will leave. In one place they put it on after I had been served dinner. I complained and the dingbat hostess replied, "What's wrong with Fox?" I said, "You'll NEVER see me in here again, lady." And I haven't been back.

I also went to Costco and they had all of their demo TVs tuned to Fox. I went home and sent a calm letter of complaint to public relations. Since then all of their Tvs have been on ESPN.

Speak out people.

Give Beck Some Credit

Even if Beck is an alcoholic rodeo clown at least he occasionally brings some of the "internet truth" to the table -- something you can't find anywhere on MSNBC for example.

Alternet is funded by the Ford Foundation and other corporate entities and it is clear they have an agenda which includes Amnesty for Illegals and attempts to censor real concerns about the Globalist agenda being pushed by Obama.

And MSNBC is equally bad in this respect. Recall how Racheal Maddow trivialized the "Tea Parties" by harping on the double entendre about "tea bagging" (e.g., sucking on someones ball sack). As far as I'm concerned both Alternet and MSNBC can be my ATM machine. That too, is a double entendre (e.g., taking my "membership" in their *** and then in there mouth).

Hope they both appreciate the humor. Turnabout is fair play? Right?

How about just talking intelligently about this issues from this point forward? New concept?

Sorry, but this is an embarrasingly weak attack on the beanstalk giant that is GB.
Getting hung up on racial issues is exactly what They want. Ditto for same-sex, repub/democrat, and other smokescreens, all of which keep us divided so that they may conquer. THEY clearly have no problem with substituting a black mouthpiece for a white one, so why should we?
Glen Beck has enlightened millions as to the staggering corruption of the "bailout"--which is more than Alternet can say. Furthermore, it baffles me as to how anyone can still be clinging to the hope that Obama will be any kind of antidote to the Bush plague. Everthing he has done and failed to do reveals he serves the same master, and never mind what f**cking color he is already

"Like all media, Murdoch's network lives off of advertising."

This is the first falsehood we need to overcome. TV advertising is chump change compared to what can be got by manipulating public opinion. Do you really think GE would choose advertising revenue over contracts for jet engines? Media giants sell the voices of their reporters/pundits/whores to corporations with business before the government. They oppose or promote politicians and legislative activities strictly according to backroom deals which have little to do with advertising. In modern media, advertising is just a way to launder bribe money, but there are many other ways. Please, will someone inform progressive journalists that Newscorp is even less interested in advertising revenue than they are in truth? These attempts to chastise them with advertising boycotts only provide them with credibility they do not deserve.

Don't miss the point - Beck is there for a larger reason
Posted by: kegbot1 on Aug 3, 2009 7:49 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Corporate radio put Beck on the air for a reason and will keep him on the air. Having been in talk radio I can tell you that raw talent is fine but in this world you have to have the imprimatur of the corporate establishment to be given a chair as big as Beck, Rush, Hannity, et. al.

The fact is that millions of die hard disaffected people listen to Beck faithfully and get their worldview reinforced by him. This is not by accident - this is a form of mass manipulation by corporate America. There are as many different types and presentations as their are hosts but the fundamentals that all must adhere to are:

1. Slavish obedience to capitalism and the corporate state

2. An equation of patriotism with mindless cheerleading for corporate causes and war

3. A lionizing of the military and military adventurism abroad

4. Engender loathing for anyone who does not fit in with this mindset

5. Reinforce support for using coercive means to make the USA into the kind of country we can all be proud of again - for the right people.

(if this sounds faintly familiar with Goebbels propaganda techniques, you are perceptive but the building blocks for this mind control actually originated with the American, Edward Bernays and were formulated to create consensus for the aims of corporations)

Every single social and political issue can be framed using these five points and, in the end, the bottom line is that the resulting mental conditioning creates manufactured consent for the corporate state or, if you will, the so-called military industrial complex.

And the package comes complete, wrapped in the flag and the cross for easy consumption.

We can pick apart the nuances and tactics of these radio puppets but don't lose sight of the big picture.

There have always been radio demagogues but the difference now is that, I believe, they have been given orders to get Americans mentally ready to support further crushing of dissent and civil liberties and those who would protest.

So what if Beck is right, and Obama is a racist? I do believe that he is a racist, his former pastor Jeremiah Wright certainly is,and for 20 plus years he listened to his hateful sermons and racist oriented crap, the sooner alter net and websites such as these realize that Beck is right the sooner they will try to justify his racism, and yes in America you can call the president whatever you can and get away with it,if I recall correctly in this very web site W was called war criminal and such things uglier than that,so now your in knots over BHO being called racist,LOL,I wish it wasn t true, but the evidence sure makes him look like one, even his book show him a bit on the racist side,so leave him be,racist as he is,well America has spoken and they want a black, socialist, racist president, and he is not a christian, nor is he a muslim,he is just godless, but then that s not a crime either,so let him be,racist, godless, socialist, but he is the president.

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I don't believe this has anything to do with race. The people screaming from the radio are the folks who LOST THE ELECTION. They aren't taking it well at all. When Bush was appointed by the SCOTUS it was almost criminal to talk about it. It was completely hushed and not spoken of or discussed at length over the public airways. Our news was filtered and censored. Now it's open season on Obama no matter what he does. And it wouldn't matter if he was white. In their minds, the wrong guy won. They don't go very deep, neither does their audience. It would never occur to Beck & Co. that they demean the entire country. And yes, it does matter what the rest of the world thinks of us. It might be time to reimnd their sponsors that this is not about race. It's about people who hate the president because he's not the guy they voted for. It's time for these major corporations that sponsor the loud mouths to be reiminded that it's unpatriotic and un-American to pay people to trash the man for all the world to hear. Bush became the butt of jokes but he was not publicly maligned. It simply wasn't allowed. ANNA

With ratings like Beck's & Limbaugh's I doubt a protest by 10,000 whiners is going to hurt anyone. Every episode of the Simpson's gets that many complaints. For me it's all good and what makes America great. We railed on the dumb-assed Bush and cronies, so Rahm and that crew are just as good a target.

I mostly don't care about the place of birth but I also don't like the Change we got and are likely to get more of. I am opposed to Sotomayor, not because she's Hispanic but because I don't think she is a follower of strict interpretation. I really hate that some justify her in this position because it would be a historic sort of first. I see the the public Healthcare scheme as a massive intrusion into private lives. I think OB is two-faced and truly dislike his slowness on gay rights and Cannabis legalization.

So frankly I like anything that diminishes Obama's power base and distracts him from his agenda. I think everyone is aware that OB's approval rating is falling, falling, fallen. I also feel very confident that the mid-term election will neuter the Democrats and save us from Obamamania.

So I don't see any problem with Beck casting whatever stones he has on hand. Didn't mind when Maher did it to Bush & Cheney either.

And FYI, I produced a TV show for FOX for 18 months, never once got told what to do in a political sense so boycotting FOX and FOX Sports doesn't make any sense - FOX News is completely separate.

Progressive are te first to use the term "racist" against someone they disagree with; and if it is black conservative,
"uncle tom". When the shoe is on the other foot, they cry for censorship a al the former Soviet Union which was a favorite of progressives from 1918 on thru the Hitler Stalin pact, thru the invasion of hungary and czheck..

Sure Glen Beck os over the top but no more than keith Oberman; but progressives will say Oberman is the truth.

What this tells me is that progressives have a totalitarian bent on those who disagree with them.

As for Obama of course he not a racist in sense of klu klux klan, but apparantly he soaked up something from 20 years with that preacher. And Beck is mild compared to him who espoused hate whereas Beck is simply stating a description of Obama. Wrong or right this is no more hate speech than progressives continual use of the term racist or uncle to denigrate and dehumanize those they disagree with.

It would be a blow against freedom of speech if a guy like Beck lost sponsors because of his views. Unless a host advocates violence against American citizens his sponsors should let him speak. There would be no freedom in America if corporations bought space only on programs that agreed with their ideology.

Hats off to Izzy Stoner for that line. I've been quoting that one like crazy!

Glenn Beck likes to think of himself as a modern day Howard Beale, the character from the 1976 film, Network. It really is an apt comparison when you think about it....

He's mad as hell.

Whether it be Glenn Beck or Keith Obermann, it is my policy to personally boycott any advertiser that gives in to groups who wish to suppress free speech. Especially when that group has an obvious conflicting agenda.

In this case, let's be honest. It's all about Beck's ratings in particular and those of Fox News in general.

Want people to stop watching Beck? Attack his veracity rather than these silly ad homimem attacks. If he is a racist then the people can figure it out for themselves and they will turn him off.

LET ME EXPLAIN TO YOU RIGHTWINGNUT, MORONS WHAT FREEDOM OF SPEECH MEANS.
Posted by: blurider on Aug 3, 2009 10:04 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
It means that Glenn Beck is in fact FREE to say the most vile things - just witness how consistently he does!

I am free - in fact this too might be construed as a 'freedom of speech' issue since George Will has so generously pointed out that 'money is speech' in political campaigns - so I do have the freedom to stop buying from his sponsors.

Finally, since I have to 'connect all the dots' for your weak minds, the sponsors have every right - the freedom of speech - to take away their advertising MONEY (see George Will, above) and spend it however they think will bring them results!

You're mostly if not all, 'free market capitalists' I assume, so I would expect you to understand without this little lesson but I'm happy to help!

NO ONE is repressing Beck's freedom of speech OR PROPOSING TO! Instead we're using our freedom of speech to express our profound disagreement with his message.

If it results in him living in a cardboard TV box instead of crying inside your TV - HEY! , them's the free markets baby!

The man is very clearly mentally unhinged. Seriously, Obama is racist because he acknowledges racism exist? Thats some very sharp thinking there, Beckie boy. Glen Beck makes Hannity and O'reilly look like the Edmund Burkes of bigotted talk shows. The only reason that Beck even has a show is that he keeps the sheeple brainwashed and hating liberals/people of color/gays/foreigners. After all, Beck is far too ugly for words(he can best be described as if Homer Simpson ate Jimmy Carter), that if he were a leftie and not a corporate stooge they would drop kick him like a packet of spiked cocaine.

You expand his audience. I never listen to AM radio anymore because it is rife with idiots like this... it becomes depressing when you hear the mentality of "the people" who call in... if this is what our country has become then no one should be surprised the empire is crumbling. See, I, mercifully, have never heard or even heard OF this guy. Now I know of him... this is how it works... a crank ranting to a group of small town idiots in the corner pub is one thing but when he is given a national voice by a media giant like Fox that is clearly unhappy that we currently have a democrat in the Whitehouse and people that don't tune in hear about him through Alternet... has not his purpose been furthered? The guy is a dung heap with the intellect of a crowbar. He should be drummed off the air the way that sportcaster who made the "Nappy headed Ho's" comment was... the reason he isnt is that many more americans than you'd like to think accept this guy as being on to something because there is nothing out there to challenge or balance what he's saying. They get six or seven versions mild to extreme of the same basic material so they think that is the limit of the arguement... schools teach them not to think critically or outside the box... nice system for controlling the majority of people. That way we who managed to get through with some smathering of intelligence left can be dismissed as leftists and in sympathy with whatever the flavor of the week is in declared national enemy... 1984 anyone?

I hope that color of change campaign is an organized BOYCOTT of Beck's sponsors and Lou Dobbs sponsors. NOTHING will happen unless the money flow is threatened. I have already started to compile a list of Beck and Dobbs sponsors and have started my own personal network boycotts.

But, also WILL SOMEONE WHO HAD AIRTIME START TO USE THE WORD 'TREASON'!!
The US in engaged in two open wars and a 'war on terror' and we are in a major economic crisis and it seems to me absolutely TREASONOUS to lie about the 'Commander in Chief' and tear him down in front of millions of people - weakening him AND WEAKENING OUR COUNTRY AND ITS STANDING IN THE WORLD.

I don't believe this is an issue of ordinary freedom of speech. Beck and Dobbs have massive public audiences which gives them tremendous power to distort and destroy the image of the President of the United States. They may not LIKE the fact that he is a black man but he is the president.
PLEASE ACT SOMEONE.

Of all the Glenn Beck viewers, I'm willing to bet that 55% of them are liberals. Why are we wasting our time listening to and watching a worthless rightwinger like Glenn Beck or shall I say the rest of the rightwing jocks? It would be nice if more progressives and liberals would learn to cooperate in their local communities and build a set of long term progressive infrastructures. How am I and the few that try to bring progressivism to conservative to moderate districts supposed to be successful when lack of team work due to the otherwise progressive and liberal helpers are too busy watching rightwing trash to get angry about? Is this why our Democratic Party in Washington is so incompetent on the healthcare issue? The vehement hate from both sides is just disgusting.

If you don't agree with Obama, then you're a rightwinger and a terrorist according to most so-called "liberals" on this blog. Notice that there is also a lot of paranoia talk on calling others the same user with no means to verify it. Just because others have a similar point of view doesn't make them the same. Punctuation, grammar, etc... don't make people the same. Instead of showing intolerance, why not use this forum to find different ways to reason with others? Instead, all I see nowadays is more people copying the other side and turning out to be violent and cultist in attitude. Is this what poses as liberal or progressive these days?

Putting an end to "putting an end"
Posted by: talkville on Aug 4, 2009 6:40 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
One cannot "put an end" to anything in the physical, material world, including this human individual G. Beck, and his use of the amplifiers of interested 'mainstream' means of broadcasting them. Such things must be strenuously and strongly countered at every turn, but they must be disappear by the process of their dismally slow, sluggish and veritably ugly inertia--they will! But they will fade away -- any force will eventually lose its energy, its power, its extension and its impact -- this, of course, can most certainly helped along in this case, the sooner the better.

But no more talk of 'putting ends' and "finishing off" etc. The entire generations that experienced the 1900's to the 1950's know very well where such talk can easily lead. And they led in utterly barbaric direction quite oftentimes. Although those who practiced such 'putting to end', finishing-off, anihilating, and otherwise "stamping out" are now largely dead and gone, the ideologies they espoused continued quite un-interruptedly, advancing, developing and even blooming once again in this period we are now living. And ideologies always must remain seated in actual, living and moving, human individuals. It's that old "battle of ideas" that Madeline Albright is so fond of waging, even as she considers the deaths of thousands to be "worth it" in conflicts besetting our own times. And the Right has 'mined' and 'sewn' and otherwise 'grown' all these ideologies.

Ultimately, they are all based on the assertion of raw, bestial, absolute and self-justified Power. It cannot be otherwise when the question is posed in terms of "ending", "terminating", "annihilating" or otherwise obliterating and erasing some process or some belief system. We ought to know well about these things in view of our recent times -- a direct program and objective launched courtesy of Ronald Reagan in the USA and Margaret Thatcher in the UK, and participated in widely by a vast number of witting or un-witting followers.

Individuals like Beck will inevitably reveal and make apparent the utterly irrational basis of his un-ending tirades. Counter his positions and he'll fade away of his own accord.

What a waste of time. Our writer COULD have debated items Beck has said, but perhaps that was simply too difficult. The reason he is such a hit is the content of his ideas, and how logical his presentation continues to be.

So, instead of actually arguing ideas, our writer simply tries to sling mud at him. How forgettable, and how pointless.

It probably was easy to throw together & get turned in under a headline, however! :-)

It was simply criminal how so many people laughed at the possibility of eliminating Bush '43. Where were the complaints from our defenders of liberty & thought then?

The radical right propagandist publisher prints the books and ships them to New York's bookstores. They then send out their agents to purchase (repurchase) them. They print and buy enough to make a New York Times best seller. It is a put up deal.

It is a best seller even if no actual retail sales are ever made. To get more detail read David Brock.

It's way past time to recognize that FOX and it's owner are an illegitiment, corporatist, anti-american propaganda operation of the fascist far Right. These people do not share american values nor abide by our standards and laws. Given what they do, they should not have an FCC license to operate on the public's airwaves. Since we no longer have a functioning Judiciary, its time to attack them by going after their advertisers in an organized way. No patriotic and responsible american, and certainly no Democrat, should buy any of their sponsors products. Since they largely have sponsored themselves anyway, this should only be a first step in getting rid of Rupert Murdoch, their Fascist Australian owner (who gained rights to operate here illicitly through Newt Gingrich), and his network with him.

ANNA

Double Standards

Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I'm more of a Bill Maher type than Beck/Limbaugh fan but I will defend to the death Bill, Glenn & Rush's right to hold any opinion and to speak on it in any medium.

Beck's et al's comments on FOX are valid critisims under our Constitution. To call his comments "racist" are in fact racism at it's worse.

Another good analogy, in my mind, is the movie "Network".

Corporate views are narrowly twisted to favor its profits. An intelligent madman is more interesting and many times makes more sense. Lets keep the air waves free and full of kooks.

Beck et al are breeding hate and spreading poison in our society.

Freedom of speech! BAH! You are hate and fear mongering!

While all the jokes stories, and even a movie about how and why to kill President George W. Bush were circulating, I suppose our contributors here were asleep, mastering a video game, or perhaps completing their GED.

It was simply criminal how so many people laughed at the possibility of eliminating Bush '43. Where were the complaints from our defenders of liberty & thought then?

So nice to see you have joined the conversation, however belatedly. Let's see: oh, yeah, they all have to be kooks, racists, etc. etc. I'm sure there's a Hitler reference in there somewhere.

They represent a fringe. One that is gasping for air as more Americans realize we're in really deep shit. Morally. Fiscally. Socially. Medically. These lunatics just push moderates our way. I say, let them rant and howl. They just give us more amo.
