How Lou Dobbs Scared Rush Limbaugh Off the Birther Story

By Eric Boehlert, Media Matters for America. Posted July 31, 2009.

The media backlash that Dobbs set off made sure that nobody will ever take the birthers seriously again.

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

I can think of three (inadvertent) positives that came out of Lou Dobbs' ill-advised embrace of the birther movement:

1) The CNN host has permanently tarnished his reputation

2) The birther movement is officially kaput (like, stick-a-fork-in-it done)

3) Rush Limbaugh is afraid to talk about birthers.

Talk about a win-win-win.

It's true that Dobbs irresponsibly mainstreamed radical right-fringe players by championing their half-baked claims that Barack Obama isn't a natural born citizen and is ineligible to serve as president of the United States. Dobbs, at least indirectly, lent the birther movement some fleeting credence as he dragged its misbegotten detective work into the spotlight. And it's still vitally important to monitor Dobbs and call out CNN management for its dreadful hypocrisy on the birther issue (i.e. The story is "dead" but it's OK for Dobbs to keep flogging it on national TV).

But there was some good news last week, and it came from watching Dobbs' slow motion train wreck unfold on the airwaves. It came from seeing how eagerly -- how convincingly -- the birther claims were debunked, not only online by progressives, but within the mainstream press as well -- the same mainstream press that's often reluctant to show up high-profile media players such as Dobbs, no matter how badly it has botched the facts. And let's not forget conservatives, who dismissed and ridiculed the birther claims.

In the case of the birthers, though, Dobbs' corporate media colleagues were utterly relentless in their fact-checking. I still don't think Dobbs knows what hit him. And frankly, I'm not sure I've ever seen such a well-deserved media pile-on. It's hard to see how Dobbs' career survives the humiliation.

Of course, it's always dangerous when hateful and cuckoo conspiracy theories are ushered into the mainstream and right-wing critics are given a platform to peddle their hateful whodunits about Obama's nationality the way Dobbs did. But, in this case, I almost think it was worth running that risk in order to watch the tidal wave of media disapproval that Dobbs' fearmongering unleashed.

Because in retrospect, the birthers, who had spent months lurking on the sidelines, needed to be called out on national TV; they needed to be ridiculed mercilessly and have their cheerleaders thoroughly mocked. They needed to be turned into the butt of a joke, and thanks to Lou Dobbs, last week they were.

It was a good thing MSNBC viewers got to see right-wing radio host G. Gordon Liddy feebly attempt to make sense of the birther crusade. And let's face it, if it weren't for Dobbs' high-profile, albeit irresponsible, birther cheerleading last week, Chris Matthews never would have booked Liddy for the show, nor would he have been discussing the topic.

Indeed, the rhetorical media beat down that Dobbs suffered seemed to reach every conceivable media forum, with reporters and pundits, anchors and TV hosts all lining up to smack the birther piñata Dobbs had so proudly hung.

True - Dobbs and his cohorts are catering to the wacko fringe element. But that doesn't make then less dangerous. It sure looks like CNN is going way back to its TIME Booth Luce roots.

Rush and other right wing talkers realized that continuing to support the total wack job 'birthers' would hurt their Arbitron ratings and in turn their income. The overnight ratings for Lou Dobbs took a hit after his supporting comments of the 'birthers' and in turn possibly CNN's income. In the end, it's the money stupid.

Ridicule replaces evidence
Posted by: whole2th on Jul 31, 2009 4:29 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The biggest pile of "evidence" coming after the recently generated certificate of live birth from Hawaii comes to us as RIDICULE.

You ask what country's passport Obama used to travel to Pakistan in 1981--the answer isn't forthcoming--the question is RIDICULED.

You ask for details on why Obama applied for a foreign student scholarship--the answer isn't forthcoming, the question is avoided and RIDICULE is offered in place of direct, evidence-based reply.

The sheople believe in ridicule to fulfill on their herding instinct--which is to avoid criticism.

Same tactics used here by Encino and GuitarBill regarding the huge base of evidence regarding 9/11--RIDICULE.

AlterNet could have a reputation for cogent discussion and debate. Instead, AlterNet has devolved into promoting mob mentality and employs political hacks who specialize in RIDICULE to make and enforce their points.

Resist the ridicule. Demand the evidence.

Oh, and Hawaii presented the certificate of live birth not once, but twice.

We want answers to the question of the passport that allowed Obama into Pakistan and back to America. We want answers to why Obama applied for a foreign student scholarship.

We don't appreciate RIDICULE as the "answer".

BAck when Hillary Clinton was competing with Obama before the primaries, her team had dilligently researched that story but found nothing. If there was anything to that remote claim they would have found it.

Even early on, gasbag rightwing wacko Laura Ingraham on her show said there was nothing to that story (although she wished there was)

the rest of the conspiracies and idiotic remarks are only to bring down what could be a great Presidency and a big improvement in America on all fronts. They just want him and America itself to fail so much that they float these lies using the Hitler manta: "If you tell the same lie enough, some people will believe it". Well, the intelligent among us won't believe the lies, no matter how many are put out there. The thing they did achieve was to make themselves look like complete morons to the entire world.

I have become increasingly curious as to how responsible journalists seem to be protecting their support for Mr. Obama by using intimidation to ignore and trivalize citizenship issues.

As stated here this week on AlterNet, Mr. Obama had an "unique childhood". The facts of his "unique childhood" are filled with half truths, issues not addressed, records being sealed, destroyed or tucked away from view of the public. I am curious why this is.

I am curious why do journalists see their job as suppressing news about Mr. Obama, instead of reporting news about Mr. Obama?

I am curious why these same journalists and lawyers went to Alaska to provide us with the full story on Gov. Palin, and even challenged her son's birth. When they found no dirt, they attacked her for being herself.

I am curious how this President who said he would provide "tansparency" has not.

This administration deserves a battering ram punch in its face for fucking with our votes ! To hell with his birth certificate. Time to give him a one way ticket outta the White House and in the slammers ! When we call up the crazies amongst us what do we expect?

Much as the "Wanted Dead or Alive" posters on the so called "Pro Life" Web sites encouraged zealots to take the law into their own hands, the birther challenges to Obama's citizenship are designed to portray the President as an active felon who is in office illegitimately and the implication is that some patriot somewhere should do something about it.

We won't hear one word of apology from ANY of those birthers, I am sick of that poop!

If a democrat, liberal, atheist, dirty-hippie, had made a crack like that there would have been AN APOLOGY, most likely volunteered to clear the air, but we, because yes I am a dirty liberal, don't do that. WHY? Because we attempt to INFORM ourselves thoroughly with FACTS NOT FANTASY. Sometimes we may mix up the facts and figures, but for the most part, they're based on reality.

I am seriously tired of being hospitable to idiotic tendencies from anyone, dirty liberal, clean-cut conservative, my brother...(that was a joke). What with that backlash, perhaps there'll be another symbolic beat down of other literally unbelievable 'news' representatives...DON'T STOP AT DOBBS!!!

will NOT go away until Mr. Obama releases all the documents that show who he really is. All the other POTUS candidates did. What makes Obama special??? What motivates him to be so secrtive when he promised Americans that he would be totally transparent with us? Bush was highly secretive and Progressives justly attacked him for this. Why the double standard????

What I believe you'll fail to realize is that many like myself care about our Constitutional Republic, our Constitution ,and our free market system. These define who we are as Americans from all other peoples past and present. I don't care what party is involved, what color of skin, etc.

I do care about seeing before my eyes the turning of the USA into a land that no longer respects rule by law and the Constitution as the law's foundation: from changing our free market system and political system into a FASCIST dictroship. Haven't we yet learned what results fascism brings to the desturction of personal liberty???

Now, if your goals are NOT the same as mine, just say so and I'll understand where you're coming from. OK?

Conspiracy theorists
Posted by: pdxlinuxchix on Jul 31, 2009 9:19 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I've been on the net a long time, twenty years this year. In those two decades I've tangled with conspiracy theorists of every stripe from Holocaust deniers, evolution deniers, moon-landing deniers and now birthers. One of the things I've noticed is that there is NO amount of evidence that will *ever* convince them. I have read, on the comments to this thread alone, three or four people say "well, if he just produced a birth certificate". However, a birth certificate WAS produced--yet, the birth certificate isn't *really* a birth certificate, it's the "short form" certificate (which is what I had from the State of Alabama until my sister, going through our parents papers, found an original that was--get this, a Certificate of Live Birth). When the certificate of Live Birth was produced, that *wasn't* really a birth certificate *either*. When the newspaper announcement was produced, THAT wasn't sufficient *either*.

What I'm driving at is this: there's a non-trivial difference between people with a rational and healthy skepticism and those who are skeptical and engaged in what Hofstaeder called "the paranoid style of American politics". The difference is this: there is evidence that *could* be presented to me that would convince me that, for instance, evolutionary biology is wrong. I have not seen that evidence and the falsification criteria I have is firmly within the mainstream of biological thought (I'm a biologist by training and vocation). That criteria has not, at present be met, but if it ever is I would, however difficult it is, abandon evolutionary biology. However, for Birthers, there is simply NO amount of evidence that would falsify their hypothesis for him. If the state of Hawaii produces affidavits from every single person who *might* have had contact with the infant Obama, Birthers will say "isn't that convenient. What are the odds that they could *really* find all of those people". If the nurses were found but it was found that the doctor died in 1963, the birthers will say "now isn't that convenient that the attending physician just so happened to die". Because they are starting from a premise and the only thing that counts as evidence are those items that confirm their premise. Anything that disconfirms it, no matter how authoritative the document may be and no matter how solid the provenance of that document or source, is by its very definition not evidence because it disconfirms what they already believe. In fact, the more solid the provenance of the document the less likely the birthers will be to believe it because they will argue that a document that is 48 years old where the provenance is absolutely incontrovertible is very unlikely and thus suspicious while a document where the provenance has breaks in the chain is *also* suspicious.

Cheers
A

I would think that the military would be more than happy to throw a soldier who refuses to deploy into the brig. Stefan Cook challenged the Presidents status as a legit commander in chief and won. the military let it go... honestly, what's up with that? somethings not right with that.
from the article;
"Do you know what this means?" Taitz asked in a telephone interview with Military.com Tuesday, about an hour after hearing from Maj. Stefan Cook, the officer fighting his deployment to Afghanistan. "It means the Obama administration has blinked. They have no cards to play with. The moment I filed a lawsuit, they didn't even fight!"

"Can you imagine what are the consequences? This is disastrous" for the administration, she said. "We'll have no military. Because anytime any Soldier, any Sailor, any Airman does not want to follow any orders, all he has to do is call an attorney and say 'I don't want to follow this order because I question the legitimacy of the commander in chief.' "

To avoid trying to distinquish between a "certificate of live birth" and a "birth certificate" can't the doctor who delivered him step forward? Obama isn't even 50 yet so there is a good chance the doctor is still alive. Even if he isn't if they just named him they could show he never delivered babies in Kenya. That should put this to rest.

For months my mother a very senior citizen, has been extolling Dobbs - not able to see that his anti-immigrant position is pure racism. Now, because she's a huge Obama supporter, Dobbs' image is in tatters. Oh will the wonders never cease.... a racist is a racist is a racist.....and Dobbs is a RACIST revealed!

DOBBS OFTEN SEEMS DRUNK ON THE AIR

I've written to CNN a few times to inquire if Lou Dobbs was, in fact, DRUNK on the air. He slurs his words, is irrational... obsessive about topics such as immigration, etc. He used to be very interesting on economic issues, but in the last year or so he seems, well, DRUNK on the air.

Like that Beck guy... an admitted alcoholic...they both are covered by the old AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) little saying: "Some people are sicker than others." Both Beck and Dobbs have risen, along with Limbaugh and Hannity (and others), TO THEIR HIGHEST LEVEL OF INCOMPETENCE.

Many are applauding their personal implosions as a harbinger that maybe, just maybe, this country's people are beginning to wake up to the hate and fear and power mongering that have been intentionally programming their minds... FOR PROFIT.

If Obama were born in friggin' KENYA - which he WASN'T! - his citizenship status would be exactly the same as John McCain's, because his mother is a natural born U S citizen!! NO other details matter in the slightest.

Forget that he's already produced the most 'authentic' form of LEGAL birth certificate Hawaii now has, electronically filed for everyone born in the last fifty years and beyond! Forget that there are extant, notices of his birth from Hawaiian Newspapers. Forget that the governor of Hawaii has said he is a legal American citizen born in Hawaii! Forget that there are living witnesses who remember his mother giving birth on that day in Hawaii!

Like John McCain's parents, his mother was a natural born U S citizen when he was born - WHEREVER SHE MIGHT HAVE BEEN!!

To prove there is any open question remainig concerning the matter whatsoever, these wing nuts should be able to prove that he is a citizen of any other country! THEN and ONLY THEN we'd have an issue worth investing our time in!

All that other CRAP is just so much shit slingin' by the tinfoil hats!

Facts, Reason, Certificates are Irrelevant for Lunatics

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
OK, it was nice to see an evil man taken down a peg or two, but that is not the end of the birthers or the overall movement which spawned them. You don't destroy anti-Semitism overnight, nor ordinary, good old American white-black racism. You don't destroy Fundamentalistic Christianity and it's irrational fear of Beast 666 and one-world government and built-in chips for everyone overnight. The birthers are just one facet of a multi-pronged attack on secular America, a religious anarchism out to destroy the country, with a belief system based on magical, pseudo-scientific thinking.

The birth certificate business and all other so-called "facts" associated with the birthers are irrelevant. You can marshall all the facts and arguments you want, but the birthers would simply sidestep any response and bring up something else. The certificate is for them false, no matter what it says. This is a firm belief, an obsession, a madness that cannot be eradicated by argument.

The only way to guard against the birthers and their ilk is constant vigilance, ever ready to expose their evil to the light of day, because they will never go away--like evil everywhere, they will lurk to strike another day with some other absurdity.

Democrats scold Obama on signing statements from Raw Story

http://rawstory.com/08/news/2009/07/22/democrats-scold-obama

“In a letter to the president, four senior House members said they were ’surprised’ and ‘chagrined’ by Obama’s statement in June accompanying a war spending bill that he would ignore restrictions placed on aid provided to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.”

The letter stated, “During the previous administration, all of us were critical of the President’s assertion that he could pick and choose which aspects of congressional statutes he was required to enforce. We were therefore chagrined to see you appear to express a similar attitude.”

Surprise, surprise, surprise. It turns out Obama likes signing statements just like Bush did. The article tries to give some cover to King Obama by saying he's issued 'fewer' of them than Bush did. But, since the Democrats control both houses of Congress, its very logical that Obama would be issuing fewer than Bush. Bush probably issued fewer back when the Republicans controlled Congress too.

The issue is over restrictions that the Congress placed on funding for the IMF and World Bank in the last war, death, and destruction funding bill that the Democrats passed in Congress.

The founders were quite careful to put control of money and how its spent in the hands of Congress. They specifically said that all funding bills had to originate in the House of Representatives, as the body who's members are most closely elected by the people. They knew that control of how money is spent is a key function of government, and they tried to keep that as close to the people as possible.

So, now we have King Obama saying he doesn't give a damn what the legislature said about how he could spend the money, and that instead he's going to do whatever he wants to do. Its good to be the King.

And, its exactly what King Dubya said.

And, you can now bet any money that the government and Wall Street haven't taken from you that the next time there's a Republican president that they'll cite Obama's precedent about how they can also ignore Congress and do anything they want to do.

If we lived in a true democracy and nation of laws, these congressional leaders would be starting impeachment proceedings instead of sending a weak letter to the White House. Of course, these are the same Democratic congressional leaders who ok'd Bush's signing statements by refusing to impeach him. I'd almost guess that if I did some research I might find that they sent a weak, do-nothing letter to King Dubya as well.

At some point, failing to fulfill your constitutional duties and instead just sending weak letters constitutes approval of the actions. You either stand for the Constitution and the rule of law, or you don't. Its like the old line about being 'half-pregnant'. If these Congressional leaders fail to do anything substantial to end this practice, then they support it by their inaction.

Obama’s Rollback Strategy: Honduras, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan (and the Boomerang Effect)

Obama’s Rollback Strategy: Honduras, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan (and the Boomerang Effect) by Prof. James Petras on Global Research.

An excellent article that deserves to be read in its entirety.

OK, I'm a pretty consistent critic of President Obama. This isn't anything personal as I've never met the man. But, I've long had this feeling that Obama consisted of a weak and phony progressive cover over top of someone who would follow the same policies demanded by those with power. Now, as we near the 200 day mark of the Obama Presidency, isn't this becoming very apparent?

We have a Hoover-esque economic strategy that involves pumping trillions of dollars into the Wall Street firms that financed Obama's campaign. This is doing little or nothing to reverse the economic downturn that is clobbering most American citizens these days. But it has rescued the balance sheets of the Wall Street firms and created a phony stock market rally that is going in the opposite direction from real economic activity. Which means of course that it can't last for long.

We have a foreign policy that Reagan would seem to admire. We've expanded our war in Afghanistan, doubling the number of troops there. We've escalated that same war across the border into Pakistan, with both 'drone' strikes and a proxy military war there. We've attempted a coup 'color revolution' in Iran, and continue to threaten military attacks on Iran. Now we've orchestrated a coup in Honduras.

And here's a key point. Personally, I've been overjoyed watching watching the people of Central and South America elect populist leaders that actually seem to try to represent their citizens instead of making government just a tool to further enrich wealthy elites. Yet, the Obama administration has clearly always regarded these elections as 'set-backs' that need to be overturned and reversed. Obama's echoing of right-wing lies and rhetoric about President Chavez is a key sign of this attitude.

Of course, its no surprise that an Obama administration would oppose other Presidents who put the interests of their citizens ahead of the interests of wealthy elites. Clearly Obama is an opponent of such views. After all, his Hoover-esque economic policies and his Reagan-esque foreign policies are a clear declaration of his own dedication to serve the wealthy elites over the interests of ordinary American citizens.

If you doubt this, just watch what comes out of the 'health care reform' process in this Democratic government. Will it be a single-payer health care system that provides care to all at lower costs to the nation? Or will it be something else that protects and expands insurance, HMO, and pharmaceutical company profits? Wanna place a small bet who Obama and the Democrats are going to represent and serve?

Don't forget that not only does Lou Dobbs work for CNN, so did Glenn Beck, who is every bit as bad as Rush Limbaugh. Beck went to FOX only after making a name for himself on CNN. Meanwhile Wolf Blitzer drones on and on, allowing right-wing material to go unchallenged. One FOX is enough; we don't need CNN as a FOX-wannabee. I don't even bother with CNN any more---since too much FOX makes me feel sick, I now turn to MSNBC as an antidote, and no longer to CNN. For whatever reason, CNN has moved too far right for me.

If the birthers have been successfully made to shut up, would somebody please now start on the Death Counselor crowd? I hang out a lot on townhall.com, where both columnists and posters do not cease attacking Obamacare as pushing euthanasia for the elderly. Every old person is going to be visited every five years to set a date for voluntary death, meanwhile medical care will be withheld from the elderly. Obama is, even as we speak, building concentration camps where the elderly will be sent to die. TV the other day showed a Congresswoman saying on the floor of Congress that Obama is going to kill off the elderly. And I don't hear anybody taking on these liars. I have posted on townhall until I am getting tired of doing it that the suggestions "get a Living Will" and "get a Health Care Power of Attorney" do not mean "make an appointment for your euthanasia". Please help, somebody, because Josef Goebbels was right---"veracity does not determine credibility" when people hear the same thing every five minutes.

Birthers & An Insight into the Heart of Obama

Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Obviously, Mr. Obama could have put this birth certificate business away in a heartbeat by releasing the documentation for his live birth in Hawai'i. The fact that he didn't is another clue about the amazing trail of secrets this Chicago insider has maintained.

We could be told more about his trips to Pakistan and other Muslim countries, how he got into college & who paid, how he progressed in the world of Chicago politics, and just where all those hundreds of millions of dollars came from that he used to overwhelm the lamentable John McCain campaign. Questions about Obama and ACORN alone could keep Newsweek going for months.

While members of the Obama-aligned media are still lining up to offer their opinions about the crazy birthers, no one even gets to ask about all these other secrets. The cover these arguments provide for his power play is invaluable, as previous writers have suggested.
