Whiny Conservatives: How Dare Rich White Guys Cry About Oppression?

By Christopher Deis, AlterNet. Posted June 22, 2009.

The right-wing media have crafted an absurd -- and dangerous -- political narrative of white male oppression, exclusion and victimization.

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

In a June 12 column titled "Miss Affirmative Action 2009," Patrick Buchanan observed, regarding Judge Sonia Sotomayor's stellar academic career, "To salve their consciences for past societal sins, the Ivy League is deep into discrimination again, this time with white males as victims rather than as beneficiaries. One prefers the old bigotry. At least it was honest ..."

Here then is a common lament among white conservative men; from listening to Buchanan and other rich, old conservative pundits, one would think that they were the most oppressed minority in America today. Often, they go so far as to imply their "suffering" is far worse than that experienced by African Americans during the darkest twilight before the successes of the civil rights movement.

In the maelstrom that has followed President Barack Obama's nomination of Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, the right-wing media have crafted a political narrative of white male oppression, exclusion and victimization.

Their solution? Crying about Jim Crow 2.0 -- the idea that the white man is treated unfairly -- and absurdly claiming for themselves a 21st century "civil rights movement" to "free" white men from so-called oppression. They see this as a moment when America's moral conscience should be aroused in the defense of white men as victims of racism and prejudice.

One could reasonably suggest that this agenda is laughable, clumsy and necessarily hamstrung by the hypocrisy of the agents involved.

As a matter of practical politics, the shrill labeling of Sotomayor as a "racist" and "intellectual lightweight" has threatened to further stigmatize the Republican Party as out of step with the political mainstream. Moreover, the very idea that the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity or Buchanan, a veritable rogue's gallery of the intolerant and bigoted, would have the moral weight or ethical authority to speak on issues of social justice (in any context) is itself absurd.

The deployment of the politics of grievance and reverse racism by the right proceeds from a well-worn script that is decades, if not centuries, old. Consequently, there exists a very real temptation to ignore the narrative of white victimhood that is generated by Jim Crow 2.0, precisely because its foundations appear to be so weak and illegitimate.

Thus, the relative silence by black public intellectuals and others on Jim Crow 2.0. Herein lays the greatest danger: This reimagining of history reveals a lack of critical language with which to discuss racism in the Age of Obama, as well as the ostensibly "post-racial" future which his election symbolizes.

Moreover, Jim Crow 2.0 is the logical result of a conservative, colorblind politics that has triumphantly succeeded in fashioning a political reality where the very discussion of race or racial inequality by progressives is itself smeared as illegitimate and racist.

With Jim Crow 2.0, the politics of race in America have witnessed a perverse inversion wherein "playing the race card" is now the exclusive province of white men -- the most economically, socially and politically privileged class in the United States.

Unpacking Jim Crow 2.0

The right's positioning of white men as victims of racism involves an appropriation of the justice claims made by the civil rights movement. In Jim Crow 2.0, oppressed white men are the newest victims of racism, discrimination and inequality. Within this fictional world, the racial order has been so upset by the election of Obama that reverse racism against white Americans (an oxymoron that itself demands engagement and rebuttal) is now the rule of the land.

The assertion that white men are oppressed is a tactically sound move that accomplishes two goals. First, it positions conservatives and the Republican Party as the true defenders of equality, justice and freedom in America. Second, it mocks the centuries-long efforts by African Americans for freedom, equality and the fruits of full citizenship.

The sum result of these maneuvers is that the "struggle" to "liberate" white men from "reverse racism" and "oppression" is made the primary civil rights issue of our time. To accomplish this goal, the right-wing media ape and parrot the symbolism and language of the civil rights movement.

For example, Buchanan, in his discussions of the Frank Ricci case in Connecticut, repeatedly references the evils of Jim Crow and the unfair hiring practices that were used to deny black Americans equal access to jobs and promotions. Likewise, in Buchanan's discussions of Sotomayor and her oft-cited comment that a "wise Latina" judge could potentially make better legal decisions than a White male judge, he suggests that her confirmation will serve to revive the evils of "separate but equal" as embodied by the infamous United States Supreme Court case, Plessy v. Ferguson.

white men are oppressors and among the oppressed

The white men who are oppressors have nothing to be angry about but they do profit from the anger of the white men who do.

We need to address the politics of dominance (winners and losers). Obama has been doing this (win-win).

What will the white men who have been oppressors do when the rest of the white men have nothing to be angry about?

Reverse Racism? What an f'n joke! Do these people even remember the Civil Rights era? Or is this just another attempt to rewrite history, as the Bush administration is trying to do. So, the white guy in New Haven didn't get the job. He went to the Supreme Court and won. Do you think that a person of color would have had all the MSM pundits cheering a black man on? Or all the public support? A black man in the Jim Crow era couldn't even get someone arrested for murder with 5 eye witnesses. When the white man has to go through all the bullsh*t that African Americans did, then they can start to whine a little.
What a bunch of sorry a$$ losers!! We, the people, won the election on Nov. 4th. Not the whining white man who destroyed the financial system, made us all work for peanuts, and are still raking in the cash while the rest of us are just trying to survive. It must be nice to have a large public platform to cry and a nice comfy bed to sleep in at night in their big McMansions. Show me a discrimination case won by a person of color who has all of those things, while blaming the ones who are "not real Americans, not like me".

The Strategic Politics of Division

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was hated by racists when he sought to free Black America.

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was hated by imperialists when he linked race and empire, and sought to end the Vietnam conflict.

When, however, he linked race, empire and domestic social class, he went too far, and had to be executed.

The strategy of "divide and conquer" is an old one. It was well refined by the British, and almost perfected in post-1798 Ireland where working class Protestants and working class Catholics were encouraged to hate one another rather than the English.

Any diversion will do. Religion, gender (or gender orientation), language or other easily identified traits can be exploited in order for the boss to say: "Let's you and him fight!"

That is the uncomfortable truth behind her nomination, her record just isn't that distinguished. Nor, if she were white, would she have been accepted to to schools she got into, her grades and test score weren't high enough. Unless you belong to the elite class, being white is now a disadvantage. There are no set asides for poor white kids like there are poor black or hispanic kids. Rich people oppress poor whites more easily than any other group as they have no legal recourse to redress their grievances.

This is theater of the absurd! Right wing authoritarians have long suggested blame on powerless groups with shoestring budgets. The equivalent would be blaming sodomy laws on the Boy Scouts of America. While they may promote homophobia - they don't have the budget or influence to get things passed. BTW, this is how anti semitism got started: blaming Jews for all the economic woes perpetrated by their corporate masters. A lot of people can't recognize bad theater and their frustrations are redirected against fellow victims. The idea of ACORN being responsible for the home loan mess is equally absurd. Are local Christian churches now responsible for torture of Muslims?
Claims of blame are getting ridiculous! Once we get a handful of Greens and Libertarians in office and they start cosponsoring controversial legislation watch the infotainment pundits start their engines. Very little happens in Washington without the approval and/or tolerance of those who wield real power - the money brokers of our elected class.

Pat and all the others are trying to connect with whom they perceive as their new base. The Republicans have been left in the dust by the rich (who are still rascist but can't afford to let it be public.)
Remember, it was the rich in the U.S. that initially funded and guided Adolph Hitler. Prescott Bush, father and grandfather to presidents, filled that role until 1943.

Whats a matter Boys - got no confidence in your own Gender or Race?
Seems to me these Good Ol' Boys have extremely Low opinion of their own demographic.
Affirmative action was not a demand to have the bar lowered- just leveled.
An dWhere does Low Self esteem come from the innate intermoil caused by Self Loathing.
They think if they are forced to compete on a Truely level playing field they will lose.
I for one believe they are able to compete without having to sabotage, or malign, the opposition- but perhaps I have more confidence in them than they themselves have. Poor lil' Frightened Boys- easier to try to beat the shit out of the comptitor than have to actually go head to head with them.
Everytime one of these Racist,Sexist idiots starts spewing their shit- all I can think is why do you think so Low of Yourselves?

The bottom was titled "NOW" (90's)with the same picture, but with white men in suits whining away ...

The artist couldn't say it any better.

If you want to make a lie strong..just mix it with a little bit of truth. This is exactly what the neo-cons are doing in this situation. There is a world of difference between a poor white male and a rich white male, and yes there is more than a tad bit of discrimination against poor white males. If you don't believe me than just think about all those white trash/hillbilly jokes you hear in polite company. In regards to "reverse racism", there is no such thing, but there is racism. A poor white male is always considered to be a racist, a sexist, and intellectually inferior. I know, I've been one all my life. I've been sent to the back of the bus by black transit bus drivers in Seattle, and screamed at by the same for politely telling one that I was going to take my bike off the bus rack. I've lost bids as a contractor to a 1/4 native alaskan woman who bid 10% higher than me, and was known to do shoddy work. When I devasted my back and was unable to walk let alone work for six months I was not even able to get food stamps let alone medical or monetary assitance. I lost my business and wound up out on the streets. Yes I am a white male, and most progressives would say everything that happened to me was my own fault. After all I'm white and male. For such a fate to have befallen me I must have lazy, arrogant, stupid and ill prepared. Otherwise how could such things have befallen me? Sorry folks but this train of thought is racist. Neocons are using progessives racist/sexist dogma against them. You will never solve the problem until you realize you are a part of the problem.

--you think the tactic of claiming "exclusion, oppression and victimization" is a poor agenda destined to failure, you haven't been paying much attention to the same method which has served Israel very well for ages; so well in fact, that Israel has never considered altering it.
Of course rich white men, no matter how successful they may be at selling this victimization BS, must forever take second place to the world's champion "eternal" victim, Israel. The Israelis need not take a back seat to anyone, when claiming the status of "victim"; They're the world's only "eternal" victims, who command one of the strongest armies, complete with nuclear weapons, and who are, on a daily basis, making more "real" victims of the Palestinians, as they scheme to steal more and more of their land. Don't question the feasibility of such a perfect mechanism, that has even fooled most historians. Follow their example. They like it very much when you agree with them..... and when you don't, well then, you're obviously an anti-semite.

This whole oppressed white male scenario is ludicrous and extremely insulting to real minorities who have struggled and fought ongoing battles for freedom since our founding fathers wrote our Declaration of Independance and Constitution. It's insulting to think that for the past 200+ years those most favored in our country were and are rich white men and for those spoiled, arrogant, whiney cry babies to actually come out and say out loud that they are oppressed, should make each and every minority and each and every woman laugh out loud. Such drama queens, I've never heard before. And you know by oppressed white men, they actually mean those making over $250,000 per year. They really don't mean all white men. They can't let just anyone into their restricted club. So don't any of you working stiff white guys get any ideas that they are sticking up for you. They are speaking of only RICH, POWERFUL, REPUBLICAN, WHITE GUYS. A small and getting smaller segment of our society. Boo fricking hoo.

If ever there were more proof that Limpdick was egomaniac, its when he compares himself to the Civil Rights freedom fighters. Limpdick doesn't have 1% of the courage that MLK or Medgar Evers had. In fact, I bet that during the 1960s Limpdick would have been the first one to throw a brick or unleash the dogs against civil rights protestors.
Rich White Conservative Men don't know what oppression is, and when the US eventually collapse and becomes a facsist state or Russia or China becomes a superpower and they ever invade the US, they will cower before there new masters, and be the first to betray America, while us real Americans(those Americans that aren't Rich White Conservatives) would be the resistance.
People like Buchanan,Hannity,Bill-O, and the rest of the Fox News criminals have no integrity, and should be ignored by everyone with commonsense and a conscience.

Obviously, Mr. Deis hasn't read any of the "affirmative action" apology published for decades, much of it right here on AlterNet.

More, daily events occurring across the nation contradict his eerily (Orwellian?) vapid nonsense.

"A nation which dwarfs its (white) men, in order that they may be more docile instruments in its hands even for beneficial purposes . . ."

When the now inevitable decline and fall of the U.S. has happened, I hope we'll hear again from people like this nitwit.

The right wing didn't craft this particular whine -- they stole it from the left. Remember the 1960s? The lefty guys thought they had it made: The Pill was on the market, sexual mores were relaxing, and women no longer had any "good" reason not to sleep with any guy who wanted to sleep with them. Then along came the women's liberation movement. The guys finally got it through their heads that the risk of getting pregnant was mostly a polite way of saying, "No, I don't want your sorry butt in my bed." Plenty of them still haven't got over it, and they seem to have passed their grudges on to subsequent generations -- and the right wing.

men's liberation?

I'm pleased to see a number of comments have introduced class into the discussion, since it separates rich white men from most others, just as it separates Obama from most other African Americans. It's always a bigger factor than race or gender or other issues of identity in predicting outcomes.

So while we probably should criticize rich white men for claiming victimhood, there does exist something more legitimate that non-rich white men or men in general may have to be concerned about.

Women have feminism which has made it okay for them to choose either traditional female roles or non-traditional ones, but men have not experienced the equivalent.

Men's liberation doesn't seem to be a common topic of discussion, and some would consider it unnecessary, but machismo and masculinity, combined with the guilt and shame often encouraged by feminist and race-based movements, can be oppressive and sometimes destructive to men and boys. The are a number of arenas in which non-privileged men, including white men, are falling behind women, with education being perhaps the best example.

I think men's liberation is a discourse that deserves serious consideration by the left (since most of its advocates seem to be on the right), even if it's a lower priority than a number of others.

If we don't participate in the discussion, I suppose we run the risk of allowing the right to dominate and distort the discourse of men's rights or men's liberation into something regressive about "traditional" values or gender roles rather than the step forward it could be.

Black Public Intellectuals

Black so-called public intellectuals and scholars (what they call themselves), are not particularly held in high esteem by ordinary black (non-public intellectuals). They don't represent or identify with the black community.

Most of these black so-called public intellectuals spend their time following each other around the county on the corporate (meaning WHITE) dollar, making useless speeches to each other using five dollar words, followed by meet-and-greets where they eat canned weiners on a toothpick and drink cheap wine.

The goal of the black so-called public intellectuals is to get face time on tee-vee shows in order to promote themselves, sell their books and to serve their coporate (WHITE) masters. They serve their masters (WHITE) by finding fault with every thing the President has said, done, might do, might not do, the way he parts his hair, whether he dips, or not, when he walks, whether he uses a tissue when he blows his nose or uses his sleeve, anything.

So, don't expect to hear anything from the black so-called public intellectuals about rich racist white conservative men calling themselves an oppressed minority or Jim Crow 2.0.

Ain't gonna happen.

By the way, shouldn't how you use your big time Ivy League education define whether you are an intellectual or scholar rather than self-description?

Just asking.

The United States is a Diverse Nation

The culture of the German people is being used in the United States today. According to Hitler the value of a people is based on their ability to originate, develop and carry forward culture, but whose culture? -- the white culture, all of us aren't white and we have three distinct population classes and cultures, the American Aristocracy, the Professional Middle Class, and the Majority Common Population.

Like Conservatives, Bernie Madoff, has an abstract sense of his own worth that overrides everyone elses, and is concerned about his being mistreated, which is exactly the way the CONSERVATIVE RIGHT-WING REPUBLICAN EXTREMISTS are, that Limbaugh parrots.

Total white CONSERVATIVE RIGHT-WING REPUBLICAN EXTREMIST domination should no longer be considered in a nation as diverse as the United States. The United States needs leaders that will represent the whole of this diverse nation, to include representation of the 70% Common Majority Population with all their diverse warts and bumps; it's evident that the pure white perfection model doesn't work well for diversity.

A story in the Bible gives an idea of how destructive to a nation conservative extremism is in the story of the beggar that sat night and day at the gate with sores on his body with his only medical attention being from dogs coming to lick his sores and he died and went to Heaven, but the CONSERVATIVE RIGHT-WING EXTREMIST that passed him every day complaining about him but never doing anything to relieve the beggar's situation in any way, also died; but he didn't go to Heaven, the one that went to Heaven was the beggar at the gate that only got help from the dogs that licked his sores. Sadly, this is what CONSERVATIVE RIGHT-WING REPUBLICAN EXTREMISM is, it's not Godly or patriotic, but jingoistic.

It's time for a new model, a liberal model, that will make a way for all the people to be all that they can be. Not a nanny nation of free handouts of worthless commodities, or a prison nation, but actual jobs that pay an actual living wage for all to be able to work and buy their own food, food stamps are good, but not as the only help, there needs to be actual help for the poor with baby sitters, gasoline, transportation, utilities, and laws against usury, because Wal-Mart and McDonald's jobs do not pay enough for workers to be able to afford these needs and usury to cash checks only makes it worse. It is time to redo the model.

Blinded by their own racism

It is quite clear that even by the title of this article that their are many Anti-white men racists posting here.
They have made their contempt for white men clear and have with their own words confirmed that white men are being pusecuted.

If those people are so self rigtuos how about this, no special treatment for anyone. simply equal rights.

When you stereotype anyone by color, you are commiting an act of racism.
White men were in charge (reality not all of them, yes there are rich white men, but does that mean that we need to start dealing with the problem of rich black atheletes?)

Simply put by giving anyone any special treatment because they are not white and not male is prejudice against white men.

Some truth about white men.

White men did not ask you to have children you could not afford, and theirfore you spread poverty. (Its just not the white mans fault).

If you started out three people in America, one of them being a white male, and two being other, and all started equally. Then the one who was not granted baseless handouts would more than likely finish last.

You either know that you are pursecuting white men with legalized racism (affirmative action) but you just do not care because of your own greedy selfish ambision, or because you have contempt for white men, and believe they deserve to be treated like crap. Or you believe that all white men are so superior to you that they do not need any help to advance to a place not white males could only dream of rising to.

Either way your thoughts are heavily flawed. The majority of white men working in the United States now have.

Never been put into a situation where they could make a decision to hire or fire someone.

Not been activists against any civil rights.

Are just trying to make the best living they can like the rest of the population.
