Right-Wing Violence Will Continue, And Fox News Will Have to Answer For It

By Eric Boehlert, Media Matters for America. Posted June 10, 2009.

Agitators like O'Reilly and Beck traffic in incendiary rhetoric and it's pretty obvious where it's leading to.

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

If Fox News is going to continue to traffic in hateful, vigilante-style rhetoric, then folks at Fox News, as well as their apologists in the GOP Noise Machine, are going to have to come up with better talking points to spin away the consequences of the right-wing madness they're so eager to incite.

They need a better line of defense because the one they trotted out in the wake of the right-wing assassination of abortion provider Dr. George Tiller was wholly unconvincing.

It was just as feeble as the defense Fox News' Glenn Beck tried to employ in May to distance himself from the accused right-wing cop killer in Pittsburgh who seemed to mimic Beck's language about how President Obama was coming to take away everyone's guns.

The Fox News crew is going to need better talking points because I fear the violence -- the bouts of right-wing domestic terrorism -- are likely to continue. As long as Fox News and the Noise Machine refuse to back off the incendiary language that they're actively mainstreaming, the political violence, visible just months into Obama's historic first term, may have only begun.

Note that during a jailhouse interview, Tiller's suspected killer claimed that similar assassination plots against abortion providers are already being planned.

And please note what you did not hear from virtually anyone on the far right who addressed the Tiller story last week. Yes, they tried furiously to distance Bill O'Reilly from the controversy or suggest there was nothing problematic with the "baby killer" rhetoric he used. But what you did not hear was anyone condemn, or even take issue with, O'Reilly's on-air crusade.

Why the silence? Because militia-style vigilante rhetoric has become a cornerstone of the conservative media movement in America, and it's now proudly championed by Fox News on a nearly hourly basis.

The fact is, I couldn't find a single prominent voice within the GOP Noise Machine who even hinted that O'Reilly's relentless attacks on Tiller were in any way off the mark or, in light of the vigilante Kansas church killing, needed to be reconsidered, that they should have been dialed down. And that's why the ugliness has only begun.

The unconvincing right-wing defense in the wake of the Tiller assassination last week was twofold, with the second layer even thinner than the first. The first was that when conservatives were hounding and demonizing Tiller for years, they were merely debating the issue of abortion. And surely nobody in America opposes a healthy debate, right? Nobody opposes "sharp political disagreement," as Michelle Malkin sugarcoated the Tiller attack, right?

Second, Noise Machine leaders claimed that liberal commentators do exactly what O'Reilly and Beck have been accused of: using violent political hate language that puts people's lives in danger. That claim has been made over and over, yet conservatives can't actually produce any proof -- can't find any hateful liberal quotes -- to buttress the claim.

That's because both talking points are complete fabrications.

First, the idea that O'Reilly and company simply debated Tiller's work is laughable. O'Reilly's never been interested in any kind of back-and-forth about the abortion issue. He just rants and demonizes the other side. And in the case of Tiller, O'Reilly portrayed him as a lawless executioner. As Mary Alice Carr, vice president of communications for NARAL Pro-Choice New York, wrote in a recent op-ed for The Washington Post, "O'Reilly knew that people wanted Tiller dead, and he knew full well that many of those people were avid viewers of his show. Still, he fanned the flames."

Break up his US media empire, sell off the pieces, and declare the bastard Murdoch persona non grata (If I remember the Latin correctly.)

Then open FBI investigations of media figures who advocate for violence whether they - the criminals and their high-priced lawyers - believe they have successfully skirted the laws against solicitation of murder, incitement to riot, and advocacy for the violent overthrow of the constitutionally elected government or not.

There is a basic legal principal - "De facto" - or "in fact." O'Lielly, Feaux Noise, Savage, Limpballs and many others in the rightwing nuttosphere, have in fact been advocating violence for years - and they should face the consequences.

What they intended to communicate was communicated. The action they solicited was accomplished. Simple as that.

When the "Don Corleones" say "Make him an offer he can't refuse" or "Take care of that guy for me" we have made them answer to justice. Free speech is not the issue. Murder is.

We should also closely examine civil law to see if there is proper opportunity for next of kin of victims to have all just and possible legal redress.

Cowards egging one another on

The Right are a bunch of cowards, egging one another on. This is the classic behavior of gutless curs.

Wingers have famously mean mouths, and they sure do love to rhapsodize about their intense hatred of liberals. They would obviously commit all sorts of violence against liberals--if they only had the nerve.

The Right declare war on liberals every five minutes. But never to the liberals' faces. ;)

For all their rhetoric, 99.99% of the Right would never have the nerve to fight against anyone--not even with their guns. They're phonies--virtually all tough talk and no action.

When these people do lash out, it is usually against their own spouses.

So it's best to think of people like O'Reilly as the members of a gang, goading one of their members to do something. ("C'mon, man! Do it! Whatsa matter? You scared? You chicken?")

Once in a while, they succeed in provoking one of their more unhinged compatriots to an act of murder. That's what's happening here.

I say this not to deny the real danger of armed wingnuts, but to put our situation in perspective. We are not dealing with a bunch of badasses ready to attack. They're basically just windbags, egging one another on. Once we arrest O'Reilly and confiscate the guns, the problem will disappear.

While these loud-mouthed talking heads have the right to "freedom of speech", I have the right to protest, how, boycott the sponsors of these shows! Nothing talks as loud as money, in this case if the sponsors realize that they are losing money by supporting these idiots, they will stop sponsoring them!

People we have to start thinking smarter! We cannot solely expect people to "listen" and get the "logic" of our conversations. The raging right has had over 20+ years to craft contortionist imagery and create alternate meanings to so many words, it is also a fact that Americans have allowed themselves to be dumbed down to such a point that logic doesn't always factor into the equation!

But as we see from this economic calamity, money talks! Media moguls and the corporations should no longer be allowed to consolidate the media to a point where they too are too big to fail! As citizens we all loose because we are no longer receiving all of "the news" we need! Best bet BOYCOTT THE SPONSORS!

It is cowardly in the extreme for conservatives to fail to own up to their faith. They should be proud to take responsibility for the deaths that result from their fatwahs.

Implied and Expressed Authority
Posted by: Purple Girl on Jun 10, 2009 7:11 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The mere fact that these assholes are granted the right to be heard & seen by these media outlets inplies they have some worthy point of view, they are some kind of an 'authority' on issues. That TV show, That Golden Microphone indicats to some small minded people that these media personalities weild more Authority than the drunk at the corner bar.
Instead of getting worked up about these particular 'skid row bums' we should be looking to hold the media outlets who allow them the soapboxes. With these contracts and this access to nation wide exposure, These media outlets are granting them an implied and expressed 'Authority'. I have yet to see a media outlet place a disclaimer on any of these talk shows stating the 'views and opinions expressed are not necessary those of the broadcasting company'. So it is logical to assume that the Views and opinions expressed by BillO and Rush ARE those of the broadcasting network...so why not hold them responsible for Their views and opinions exressed? The Cosntitutional right to Freedom of Speech was never extended beyond living breathing citizens. It has been these Corps who have afforded these Racist, sexist, xenophobic incitors of violence and insurrection the national Platform, without so much as a disclaimer.
Aren't these programs no different than those Infomercials selling a product or a idea? Esp those like BillO, Hannity and Beck who are willing to misrepresent the facts, manipulate to invoke gutteral reactions,Pitch their own Views on any given subject they have no earned expertise on?
What makes these assholes different from the idiots at the local bar is that fact someone has given them a contract and a microphone which indicates an expressed consent, and thus an overtly implied authority to expound the Views of these Corps. So when a person is murdered as a result of the inciteful rhetoric of someone like BillO- he is doing so with the legally bound blessing of Board and top brass.
FOX 'news' and Newscorp should be held legally responsible for all anything that comes out of the mouths of their representatives. I see no disclaimer stating otherwise.

There will be no payback, there never is. The country is filled with people who should be thrown in jail but they go on undisturbed. The other day someone's great-grandmother was tasered in a traffic stop. So you can see how bogged down they all are in protecting us and abiding by the law. Try not watching it. ANNA

Brainless Rhetoric

I find it both pathetic and infuriating that the right-wing blabbers on the radio think they bear no responsibility for the violent actions of the idiots who take them seriously.
All you hear from people like Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Savage and O'Reilly is a constant drumbeat of hate against liberals, gays, minorities, etc. Then they feign surprise when one of their brain-dead listeners decides to act on that rhetoric. "We had nothing to do with that" they whine. "It's not our fault!"
And, as the article points out, when that doesn't work they'll say "Well you libs do it too! You guys were always calling for the asassination of Bush!" Of course there is never any proof that any liberal ever said but that doesn't matter to the wingnuts.
I fear there will be more right-wing violence as long as the crazies on Fox News and right-wing talk radio keep stoking the flames of hatred.

Don't worry--the right-wing noisemakers certainly will come up with a "better" defense, and the lazy, spineless mainstream media will swallow it whole and start regurgitating it all over us. If the MSM didn't keep granting unearned legitimacy to the far right, little tin gods like Bill O'Reilly might not have gotten the bully pulpit they enjoy now.

Stop the Terrorism Rhetoric
Posted by: Casadh on Jun 10, 2009 10:58 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Please, if you read this, consider this, and discourage the usage of the word "terrorism" in our language. It is a word that demonizes crimes and shifts position according to who is in power and who isn't. If we honestly believe in fairness, we *cannot* only believe in it when we *aren't* in power.

Now that the right-wing are shifting out of power, those of us on the left need to avoid repeating the injustices by the right. They called us left-wingers as traitors, terrorist-sympathizers,and guilty of treason. They loved to call animal rights and environmentalists as "eco-terrorists" (despite that neither have killed people).

Now that the right is falling out of favor, let us NOT treat crimes differently based on the ideological beliefs the individual had.

Murder is murder.

The fact that the murder was done over the issue of abortion does NOT make the murder an act of terrorism.

Let us end the usage of the rhetoric of terrorism. Not only should we object to its usage by our political opponents, but we must also object to its usage by ourselves.

Obvious to you, obvious to me, not obvious to them. Already this afternoon townhall.com posts were insisting that the Holocaust Museum shooter was not only a Democrat but an employee of ACORN. Give them a few more hours and they will have implicated Obama. Oooops, FOX already did---they've blamed the shooting on Obama's Middle East trip.

When freedom of speech is dangerous
Posted by: Emmories on Jun 10, 2009 7:32 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
After a major event, I see what Fox News also has to report. I can actually watch a speech & minutes later Fox News is telling me what I heard is not correct. Cropping videos, spewing mis-truths, rants, raves, lies, and stupidity. Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Glen Beck are dangerous. Their idea of uniting the people and taking back the country is presented to their viewers in a form of violence. Freedom of speech, good ratings, laughing all the way to the bank, and the death of three people. Did any of you apologize to Mrs. Tiller and family? Nay, you just tried justifing our statements & blaming other networks. What a class act! You say the words democratic and liberal as if it were acid on your tongue. Yet, using those words sure does look good on the paycheck. BTW, those people you reach, not liberals, are guilty of murder. YOU MUST BE SO PROUD

Freedom of Speech is not just for one side. Hate speech is coming from both sides to intimidate, shock and produce ratings. MSNBC and Fox seem to be giving as good as they are getting.

Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton were attacked with vile comments and gestures, but Mr. Obama was not. This is when MSM started on their down fall. They refused to defend these women awhile giving Mr. Obama a pass. Somehow if you defended Hillary and Sarah, that made you not liking Mr. Obama. One had nothing to do with the other.

All of this hate from both sides is wrong, as it is wrong to blame a person who does not fire the gun. Perhaps if we turn off the TV and are not hearing the hate, then the person shooting the gun will be the only responsible party to the murder.

What's the difference?
Posted by: CaliJim on Jun 14, 2009 6:32 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
What’s the difference between the need for Islamic and Muslim moderates and the spokespersons, either official or unofficial, of their mainstream religious/political organizations to denounce the use of hatred and violence in promoting the agendas of their extremist elements and the need for Republican and Christian moderates and the spokespersons, either official or unofficial, of their mainstream religious/political organizations to denounce the use of hatred and violence in promoting the agendas of their extremist elements? NONE.

Failure of the moderate mainstream of all religions and nations to step up to condemn and attempt to restrain their extremist fringe groups from using violence in their disagreements with opponents is one of two things, moral cowardice or implicit support for those actions.

Here are a few quotes from a 2002 speech by George W. Bush that are relevant to the issue:

“…The hatred of a few holds the hopes of many hostage. The forces of extremism and terror are attempting to kill progress and peace by killing the innocent….”

“…There is simply no way to achieve that peace until all parties fight terror. Yet, at this critical moment, if all parties will break with the past and set out on a new path, we can overcome the darkness with the light of hope….”

“…Leaders who want to be included in the peace process must show by their deeds an undivided support for peace….”

Statements by Republican and “Christian” leaders that vilify their opponents, give credence to the concept of secession from the United States, falsify or distort the truth in a way to inflame followers or convey the concept that the violence is somehow justified and approved of by their god (“God sent the killer” and similar sentiments were recently observed following the cowardly and vicious murder of Dr. George Tiller) are actions that are no different than the same actions committed by the Taliban, Al Qaeda and others who act in the same fashion.

I’ve said for years that we are in a cultural war…not between Christians and Muslims, Democrats and Republicans, American citizens and citizens of other nations, but, between the extreme religious/racial based bigotry and total lack of acceptance and tolerance shown by fundamentalists of all types and the scientific/humanist/freedom based tolerance of differences and individual rights that is the basis of all civilization and the core of the values of United States of America.

Those of you who share beliefs with the violent extremists and don’t speak out or take action against their violence are equally culpable – particularly if you have knowledge of illegal activities or plans, but fail to notify the appropriate authorities.

So…what is it? Are you supportive of a United States of America with freedom, liberty and the rights and privileges that promote the pursuit of happiness for ALL members of our society, or are you aligned with the dark and violent forces who will not be satisfied until our society has literally been purged of all people who don’t think, act and believe EXACTLY as you do? Are you (as appears to me to be the case) following the same path as the slave states in insisting on “my way or the highway”? As Sara Robinson says in her article in Alternet “That's your choice. Are you deliberately trying to start a civil war? Or are you willing to work for real civility, and return to your seat at the table, ready to help us choose the country's future?”

Yes or no? Act like adults…or accept the fact that there is no difference at all between you and the other violent extremist whack jobs in the world.
