Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann, Ed Schultz -- How MSNBC Became a Liberal Mecca

By Rory O'Connor, AlterNet. Posted June 1, 2009.

MSNBC's star pundits have positioned the network as the progressive alternative to Fox.

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

"I’m a liberal -- and I’m not running from that word!" exclaims Ed Schultz, the latest lefty star in the cable television news-and-opinion firmament. Schultz, America’s top-rated progressive radio talk show host, has just finished his first month as host of the eponymous "Ed Show" on MSNBC, which is attempting to duplicate its earlier success in crossing over progressive radio talk show host Rachel Maddow.

Despite the startling success of Maddow and the recent addition of Schultz to an increasingly liberal lineup that also includes MSNBC’s first breakout star Keith Olbermann, getting anyone other than on-air talent like Schultz and Maddow to admit the obvious -- that the rising cable net is in the process of re-branding itself as the left-winged equivalent of right-leaning industry leader Fox News – can be difficult. For example, when asked if the decision to hire Schultz was part of a conscious strategy to "move left, MSNBC President Phil Griffin chooses his words carefully.

"The answer is complicated…but simple at same time," Griffin responds. "The network has evolved a lot in the past few years. We went from doing a little bit of everything to doing lots of politics under Keith from 2003-05. We first began to get traction after the Iraq war started, after ‘Mission Accomplished.’ Then, more and more, politics led the way. When we did well with it in the 2006 elections, we made a decision to become ‘the place for politics,’ as the late Tim Russert dubbed us – and all of a sudden began to take off a little."

Griffin says that both Olbermann and fellow MSNBC stalwart Chris Mathews "both had a strong point of view about the war -- but our strategy then was simply to hire smart people, allow them to have a point of view, and to be authentic. At the same time, we moved even further toward politics and away from trying to be ‘all things to all people.’"

Yes but … Fox News covers politics as well, albeit with a clearly conservative slant. Doesn’t the hiring of Schultz – and Maddow before him -- signal that MSNBC is positioning itself as the progressive alternative?

"Well, Rachel did so well as a guest analyst -- and was so smart, like Keith – that we asked her to fill in when he went on vacation," Griffin recalls. "And she held his numbers, which is something that other talent we had on-air at the time, like Dan Abrams, didn’t do. So that made the decision to give Rachel her own show after the conventions really easy … September 8, 2008, was her first day, and almost immediately it was obvious to us that Keith’s audience loved Rachel … so we had flow. But it was more organic than a conscious strategy to go left," Griffin concludes. "A vision of smart progressives just began to emerge … "

Whether it’s the result of an organic vision or a conscious strategy, however, adding a proudly progressive "populist figure" like Schultz to its lineup means that MSNBC is now providing the largest toehold progressives have ever had on television. Even Griffin admits the cable net now has a "progressive flow," although he quickly adds, "That’s a little different than saying we consciously chose such a strategy."

Taking a swipe at Fox, he points out, "We have no daily talking points; we also have [the more conservative-oriented] ‘Morning Joe’ program -- so it’s clear we have no political ‘line,’ if you will -- but sure, we now have a progressive flow."

"Hey, I’m encouraged to have and state my opinions," says Ed Schultz. "I think what we’re doing here is best described as ‘independent/progressive.’ I’m very proud to state that I‘m a liberal – but the independent part means we don’t run from the facts, either."

Schultz also believes that his sizeable radio audience will, over time, follow him to television. "The cross-promotion is terrific, we’re expanding the brand, my website traffic has already doubled," he notes. "But let’s face it -- not everyone in the country knows Ed Schultz, so it will take some time to develop this. We look at this as a marathon, not a sprint."

Still, both Schultz and Maddow have already driven MSNBC’s all-important ratings numbers up in the highly competitive cable news environment. In its first full month "The Ed Show" -- although trailing both Fox and CNN in the time period -- increased MSNBC’s rating by 9% in total viewers from the prior month and a full 15% from a year ago. And although much was made of the fact that Maddow’s show recently drew its smallest audience since she joined MSNBC – some 763,000 total viewers -- she still regularly beats longtime CNN star Larry King. True, Maddow's ratings have cooled since her meteoric rise during last fall’s political frenzy, but her overall ratings last month were still doubling those MSNBC saw a year earlier, when Dan Abrams averaged just 527,000 total viewers in the same time slot.

"I’m a liberal -- and I’m not running from that word!"

~ Ed Schultz

He calls himself a Progressive too, we will see about that. His labels remind me of Tucker Carlson, the 'talent' twists it's self into pretzels trying to fit the label. At least they are trying.

So we’ll be progressive by remaining true to the issues, and independent by not running from the facts. That means we won’t be in lockstep with liberals, and we’ll certainly criticize Obama where it’s warranted. Viewers don’t want you to walk the fence -- they do want a point of view -- and that’s what we bring. So be true to the facts -- but take a stand!"

I hope it works out, they need more investigative reporters. 'On-air', 'talent' and 'Dan Abrams' should not be used in the same sentence. I'm sure he is much better behind the scenes, isn't he a lawyer?

There are two things that would make me like Ed's show better, more guests and sit down.

The standing up, flashing 'orange' terror alert lights and being shouted at, pretty much keep me from listening to anything he might have to say.

"Progressive flow"

"That’s a little different than saying we consciously chose such a strategy."

No, what they did was start listening to their audience, CNN does too, and FOX noise and each came up with a different response. Believe it or not, I think MSNBC is making that choice with the best heart, meaning intentions.

CNN, like the rest of them, is completely corporate and we know what FAUX noise is, pure propaganda. MSNBC is providing a small window of opportunity for other voices and what is the response from other media?

They scream bloody murder that MSNBC is going 'left'. Many readers might have missed it, but we had a terrific discussion about how 'left' just means 'smarter'.

If I was running MSNBC, I would just take it as a compliment and say "thank you", chalk it up to responding to viewer demand.

I think the criticism the network is going left is ridiculous. When you look at the whole line up of material, especially the 'off hours' stuff, it is highly 'conservative' and screams that message.

‘Morning Joe’ is just the tipping point between the extremes of their programming. His show is the center point along their whole spectrum and he is so far right personally it is ridiculous.

Andrea Mitchell? Give me a break, she is married to a banker. Her reporting might be OK, but putting her in charge of commentary gives me the whim whams. And what about that creep who is always sitting in Willies lap? As if the visuals weren't bad enough, he is also married to a banker. It is downright incestuous.

I wish Ed's show was an hour later, I like to listen to Chris Matthews too, but not a rerun in the middle of the afternoon from two hours before. Sure it is good when there is a lot of exciting news and he expands into two hours of live interviews. But normally I'd rather just have the live shows all back to back in an uninterrupted four hour block.

If you think of it as I do, a block of work time, then I think you can see what I am talking about. Would a factory worker take a one hour break in the middle of a shift?

No, it throws off the flow.

The Evolution of MSNBC

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I remember when that network started. It was so lame it was embarrassing. The only things worth watching were a show called Time and Again (which was a news retrospective) and some upstart punk named Keith Olbermann.

In a matter of time, Olbermann went back to ESPN then Time and Again was canceled.

Two of the hosts were Alan Keyes (who hosted a jaw-droppingly awful program called Alan Keyes is making sense - remember that?) and a guy who called himself Michael Savage (a far right extremist who called himself Michael Savage for reasons only his analyst can tell you).

Keyes and Savage were eventually (mercifully) canceled, Olbermann got back to where he once belonged, and we all lived happily ever after.

Right now I'm watching Morning Joe. Scarborough is about as smart a Conservative as is possible to find, Willie Geist is a hoot, and I am in love with Mikka. So sue me.

A left of center alternative

I would generally describe MSNBC as going for a slightly left of center alternative. CNN went into the right wing or emotional side chasing Fox News, using hosts that were annoying, or right wing fanatics (Lou Dobbs). Last years elections along with the financial crises showed how America was shifting to left of center, realizing the failure of the Republican polices of a generation. MSNBC saw that and filled a void for a moderate cost and a modest gain in viewers.

NOTE TO MSNBC: Your redemption is not, unfortunately, complete. If would would like to make it so, do yourselves a big favor and BRING BACK PHIL DONAHUE. Your treatment of him in 2003 was beyond despicable.

Just a thought.

I too was thinking they should bring back Phil Donahue, if he would even talk to them.

And if they'd really like to get serious about being progressive, why not talk to Bill Moyers about doing special reports.

I was thrilled when Rachel Maddow got her own show last fall and have been watching ever since then although my enthusiasm has been waning a bit. I would like to see her have more guests on like Jim Hightower and some others that write for this site, CounterPunch, etc. so viewers would be introduced to more progressive views. I would like to see her and others become the tv I.F. Stone of tv journalism.

My objection to this new programming on MSNBC is that I have to watch it. For years I have watched little TV at all, just Democracy Now and an occasional movie. I had so much time to do other things.

Now I'm trapped in front of the TV for a full evening every week-day, what with not wanting to miss what Ed, Keith or Rachel have to say on the matters of the day. Damn that MSNBC!

Since when, did pointing out violations of the Geneva Conventions, International law, and our own laws become a liberal or progressive view?
I do not see Keith as a liberal or progressive.
I see him simply as a news man (who occasionally has a special comment). I see John Dean and Johnathan Turly as a law professors. I do not like the oddball segment, but my husband loves it. It must be a guy thing.
Rachel lost me when she kept harping on Prop. 8. I realize this issue is close to her heart, but she runs the risk of going the way of Ellen and Rosie. Ellen learned a hard lesson. I hope Rachel gets it soon.
Mr. Ed is too much like CNN's shouting personalities (Ed & Tucker) for my taste. Sometimes the best way to get someone's attention is to whisper or succinctly and eloquently (like Keith) state the facts.
Keith came late to the party of The Emperor Has No Clothes, but at least he got there. Once he did, American voters loved it.
Keith, perhaps reluctantly, does not pull punches with the Obama Admin. either.
A lie is a lie and betrayal of one's campaign promises, is simply a betrayal.

Lars Larson and his ilk made me quit watching Ed.

The mighty triumphirate is great entertainment and cautiously caustic, but they still avoid the real pot-boilers to protect their ratings and their celebrity status. The rest of MSNBC is hum-drum MSM claptrap, disguised as something less meaningful that it would lead you to believe. I hope they keep trying, but the GE board will probably keep a tight rein on anything truly worthwhile across the board. Not only have the chickens not yet hatched to be counted, there are no eggs to be seen and the hens are not in the mood to lay or get laid.

If you've seen Dylan Rattigan on CNBC's Fast Money, you know he's wicked smart and witty in the bargain. Now, they're bringing him over to MSNBC toward the end of this month. I believe they're slotting him from 10A to 2P.

If he catches fire, I bet you'll see him in that 10p position.

It'll be interesting to see how he leans. Even though he's a "money guy", I've heard him express plenty of Progressive opinions.

For far too long, they've been busy defending Obama despite the fact that he's copying Dubya. I will take one exception though. Even Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow have been forced to admit that they're embarassed by Obama breaks his promises and not only continuing but also furthering Dubya's policies. Whoever thinks we have a "liberal" media needs to have their head examined seriously.

He pays close enough attention to identify the junk journalism that MSNBC cranks out. Is it better that it is our "tribe" that cranks out the junk for the rubes?

Unfortunately, the respectable journalism on tv is PBS. In newspapers, its McClatchy. Apart from that it is entertainment, and that is all, including MSNBC.

GE owns NBC. GE is a MAJOR "defense" contractor, which means that it's a major recipient of taxpayer largess in the two tragic and illegal "wars" still going on. It's possible they see an end to this golden goose. Don't forget; politics operates mostly out of sight, so who knows WHAT the Obama administration is doing to set things right? GE for one, would, and may be beginning its "rehabilitation", as are bush & cheney, ahead of time, in the persons of Olbermann, Maddow, and Schultz. It'd be a good thing to see CBS's 60 Minutes spin off to something like Countdown, or someone like Greg Palast come back home to host his own show. Investigative journalists are among those who kept politicians relatively honest in the past.

Sincerity and Authenticity

It was in 1970, that the social-literary critic Lionel Trilling lamented that sincerity and authenticity have given way to stratagems and opportunism.

Were this, say, 2002, MSNBC would be playing the hard-ass patriot game, but now with the nominal liberal Obama in place the network is selling a vanilla kind of quasi-liberalism.

"Liberal," as progressives currently define it, is far from a favorable category; nonetheless, I don't believe there is an "authentic" liberal at MSNBC
--not wise-ass Olbermann, not motor-mouth Matthews . . .

Dan Abrams was filthy, but I guess he's gone. I don't know Maddow and Shultz, and don't want to know them.

What we have is standard brand co-optation, TV network style. It is cosmetic surgery and means nothing. Less than nothing.

(... if anybody gets a finder's fee, you owe us all a pint!)

By the time I got extended cable, Phil was gone. I have seen him on a few shows as a guest since then, and wish he was a regular somewhere, PBS or MSNBC again.

Best thing that happened to the daily line-up was Dan Abrams leaving (I thought I caught a reference recently that he's teaching law somewhere).

Worst things still happening are:

1) the women announcers during the day with their Barbie hairstyles that so distract me I do the dishes and listen instead of watch (is that another reason why Rachel is so refreshing?)...

2) and those prison lock-ups shows and Internet child molester stings which get me to switch off immediately! They may be on late-night east coast, but for us left coasters it seems like time lost that could be put to better use.

Instead of re-running Chris/Keith/Rachel, there would be plenty of room left for sensible commentary by the likes of Donahue and Moyers ... or even ABC's Bob Woodruff who does the environmental news on the Planet Green channel. It would be nice to have news other than constant politics (even though everything is politics these days).

Or somebody altogether new who could get some of the guests scheduled the past couple of seasons on Real Time with Bill Maher. Nothing wrong by hearing both sides of a story ... after all, an unexamined life is not worth living.

-------------------------

Snap Shot of Semi-Retired Progressive Woman's Friday Evenings: Ed/Chris/Keith/Rachel ... switch over to Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO ... take an hour break to get ready for bed (walk the dog, wash my face, brush my teeth) ... then Bill Moyers Journal on PBS and lights out.

Now put Donahue in there somewhere, and I'd be one contented newshound!

With all due respect, people can rave about MSNBC all they want, but the ratings show the network is being beaten in the ratings, when up against O'Reilly, Hannity and Beck. Personally, I think its because they look desperate, and are simply trying to be the FOX of the left. And having tried to watch the MSNBC shows in the evening I turn the channel for the same reason I dislike FOX in the evening. Its all so mean and loud. MSNBC needs to do something original, rather than copy someone else.

Ed comes off like a big ol' dumb truck driver.

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Mind you, I'm from Houston and I learned years ago that when somebody says to me "I'm just a dumb ol' country boy," I need to put my hand firmly on my wallet and be very careful what I sign.

Politicians and media types are always bragging about their "working class roots" in their Ivy League accents. They neglect to mention, of course, that they cut loose from those roots at the first opportunity. They would never admit (most of them) that what they really take pride in is that they "rose above" those roots and actually identify more - like Chris Matthews - with the establishment.

Nothing "dumb" about Ed, of course. He has the facts, his mind is quick, and he really knows how to debate - and I understand that he actually did drive a truck for a living.

Important note: I mean absolutely no disrespect to those who cannot speak. It is unfortunate, but "dumb" has been considered a synonym for "stupid" - another unflattering term with the exact same origin - for a long time. In the vernacular, those are still the words of choice for someone lacking intelligence. Using the vernacular was germane to the comment.

Back to my point: Ed is working class all the way - and I like that - a lot. Can anyone remember another news program in the MSM from a working class perspective? I can't.

He talks about what is or isn't fair a lot - and he does it with the voice of a working man.

Look, I love Rachel and Keith; I watch em every day. Frankly, I identify with them more than I do ED - even though with me, it isn't a matter of "working class roots," I've actually been working class all my life. So I couldn't be happier to see someone who hasn't lost the working class perspective speaking out on TV. It's nice to see someone who thinks a UAW representative has as valid a perspective as stock analyst or a free trade advocate.

John Lennon is another guy who never lost that perspective: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njG7p6CSbCU . That's a link "Working Class Hero." Warning: NOT work friendly! As a society, we seem to have forgotten exactly how important those are.

I hope Ed is around for a long time reminding us of that fact.

Fox and CNN are on basic cable, MSNBC is not

Even in the NY metro area, in some parts, you can't get MSNBC anymore on basic. There goes the older demographic. I have two digital boxes but am not about to spend any more money. So that means I no longer watch MSNBC because I like to watch the TV in bed and doze off. No boxes on the bedroom TV's. As Schultz noted on radio the other day ( on NYC's horrid WWRL signal, which airs mostly extended infomercials )he has to compete with one hand tied behind his back from the get go.

MSNBC,NBC,CNN,ABC,CBS are all going bankrupt because of media malpractice of these liberal-biased media.FOX Cable News on the other have been No.1 for 8 years in a row and counting. All the audiences of these liberal-biased media combined can't even come near the audience of FOX.Goodbye to the biased ,lying,one-sided worship of Obama without a single criticism of the incompetent Obama in military, cultural and economic policies and actions with massive spending for non stimulus bills with plenty of porks. Obama is a pathological liar. Obama did the opposite of all his campaign promises. Our younger generations of Americans are miseducated and KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HISTORY that we are repeating the same mistake that Carter did and giving a very high debt, deficit, followed by very taxes and then high interest rates and hyperinflation once the inevitable boom cycle [economic recovery] comes out of the bust cycle [recession].Obama is making it worst that our unborn children and grandchildren won't be able to pay for it.

Didn't see any mention of Thom Hartmann as a potential new host. Phil D. and Bill M. are great but I really liked Thom Hs show on Air Am. while it lasted here in south Louisiana.

Who's running the cable scene?

A friend reports that Comcast has a large say in what we see, and that as a conservative company it has made MSNBC unavailable on regular cable in some places. One can not automatically get the more liberal MSNBC on Cape Cod, Ma., for example, without a satellite. Write to your Congressman and ask about this, and thanks.

The test pattern that plays at 4 am gets more viewers.

MSNBC doesn't have a liberal agenda, it's a prostitute, just like every other mainstream media organization. They would focus on quilting bees if it brought in "the numbers."
