Anti-Mexican Media Hysteria Makes Life More Dangerous for Latinos in the U.S.

By Leslie Savan, TheNation.com. Posted May 13, 2009.

Mexicans have recently been the prime target of the most rancid typecasting in the media -- can more racist violence be far behind?

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

Amid the anti-Mexican media hysteria festering since the outbreak of swine flu, Dave Letterman's portrayal last week of potential Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor as a hot-blooded Hispanic Judge Judy wasn't the ugliest stereotyping of Latinos. It was actually weak tea compared to the mouth-foamings of Jay Severin, the Boston radio host who called Mexicans "leeches," "the world's lowest of primitives," and exporters of "women with mustaches and VD." WTKK-FM has suspended but hasn't fired Severin, even as some advertisers have bailed.

No, Letterman's bit was far more mainstream, and more feasibly "acceptable" than, say, the kneeslappers of Betsy Perry, a branding consultant whose Huffpost musings about Mexican "banditos" and "the Mexican help with hands washed in parasite-infested tap water" resulted in Mayor Bloomberg axing her from the New York City Women's Issues Commission. Clearly, not all Perry's issues are about women. (She has since apologized.)

With the rightwing smuggling in the lie that immigrants are responsible for swine flu in the U.S. (when, in fact, it's been spread here primarily by Americans who've visited Mexico), Mexicans have been, of course, the prime target of the most rancid typecasting. But once the type has been cast, it has jumped easily to Latinos of any origins. A summa cum laude graduate at Princeton, an editor of the Yale Law Journal, now a judge on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, and a Bronx native raised by her single mom (like Obama), Sotomayor is of Puerto Rican descent, and so this:

Not even a gulp from the Morning Joe gang. Mika laughed, and Willie Geist mumbled something about "fit for the Supreme Court." We may never learn whether Sotomayor is or isn't "fit," because before we or the Senate Judiciary Committee see her in reality, we'll visualize that hot tamale from the courtroom TV show losing control of her fellow Hispanic hotheads.

This particular ethnic skewering seems out of character for Letterman, who often slices through idiot-think brilliantly. Maybe he was, as conservative blogger Ann Althouse suggests, "mocking the mocking of Sotomayor." What is up? I asked a Letterman show spokesperson, who answered, "We're going to decline comment on this."

Whatever Dave's intentions, the Sotomayor brand he's helped put into play seems to have grown out of a controversial post, "The Case Against Sotomayor," by The New Republic's legal correspondent Jeffrey Rosen. Relying primarily on anonymous former law clerks as sources and admitting that he didn't research Sotomayor's opinions much, Rosen nevertheless deduced that "the most consistent concern was that Sotomayor, although an able lawyer, was 'not that smart and kind of a bully on the bench.'" His unnamed sources, he wrote, questioned "her temperament...and most of all, her ability to provide an intellectual counterweight to the conservative justices." One of the unnamed said another unnamed said, "she's not the brainiest." From that, a National Review blogger further deduced that Sotomayor is "dumb and obnoxious."

We have double digit unemployment in some places and 20 million illegal aliens stealing jobs, depressing wages and busting unions. These people use our emergency rooms as their doctor visits and stick tax payers with the bill. Illegal kids have no right to be in this country but they enroll in our schools and sap resources from American children. They are also demanding to be given instate tuition and thereby stealing an American student's spot in a tax payer subsidized University. The 14th amendment was meant to protect freed slaves. Today illegals use it as a meal ticket. It is past time we abolish the laws that automatically gives citizenship to the progeny of illegals.

Legal Latino immigrants have failed to differentiate themselves from their illegal counterpart, therefore I have no sympathy for them if Americans fail to differentiate them from their illegal counterparts. They refuse to learn the language, they keep their 3rd world birth rates. The children of immigrants do disproportionately well compared to the rest of Americans except for Latinos. Illegal aliens are at best thieves that have stolen an American's SS# and job. At worst they are murdering gangbanger drug dealers. Either why, it does not benefit the American people to allow those types to live in our country.

The Swine Flu came from Mexico. Therefore it is only logical to associate it with Mexicans.

this article tries to take a bunch of unrelated incidents about mocking of hispanics, swine flu and the second circuit hispanic judge as evidence of pending violence or worse against hispanics. it fails.

each incident has been discussed in detail on alternet and in other sources. this is a helter skelter rush job.

as to the judge, rosen's article in the new republic may or may not be a supreficial analysis of her qualifications, but so is this article.

how did this rambling sketch get past the editorial desk?

If you object to illegal migrations because of: (a,b,c,d, etc.......)

You are xenophobic, racist, paranoid, a right-wing wing-nut, likely white, and most certainly wrong in your facts, and have no compassion…oh, and you have nothing to say because your ancestors were nasty pieces of humanity ( acting like most people’s ancestors)

After a while you begin to notice a pattern......

A significant portion of America's population is Hispanic and oppossed to illegal migration. Mexican's are primarily of Spanish descent...there is a native minority in Mexico that are treated poorly by the dominant culture. So why is the racism label applied other than for its propaganda effect?

Gang behavior in all its forms is ugly and growing, and those gangs comprise various ethnic and immigrant groups.

Remember the old adage..it's not if you win or lose but how you play the game that matters. And how the debate on illegal migration is played is to depict opponents with the attributes listed above.

That's propaganda.

exists concerning how "illegal" immigration began. Not people blinded by the lure of the real America. People denied any other way to stay alive, through a collusion of both governments affecting them. All beautifully documented by Rudolfo Acuna in Occupied America. A seminal work, highly regarded by social scientists and historians alike.

All of which indicates that the first commenter above, who represents legions, knowingly or not aids and abets profound indecency. Clearly s/he does not want to be seen, or to see him/herself as indecent, else no need to fabricate an excuse for simply screwing those weaker because one can and wants to.

I live in Nebraska. We have been totally swamped by hordes of illegals.

Witness something that happened in my area just last week:

Columbus, Nebraska--population 18,000. A very quiet typical small midwestern city. A 60 year-old man who delivers for Pizza Hut got a call to deliver to an address at 10 P.M. He gets there and it is an abandoned dark house. Five Mexicans jump him, beat him up and rob him. He spends 2 weeks in the hospital. (All the assailants were arrested and all were in the country illegally.)

Norfolk Community Hospital last summer had an illegal Sudanese who was diagnosed with leprosy. They had CDC guys running all over the place in the panic that ensued.

Local Andy Griffith sheriffs have to deal with Mexican and Columbian drug gangs that make the Bloods and the Crips look like boy scouts.

If for what ever reason, millions of Americans were to illegally flood south of the border and burden any country in central America, don't you think we would be unwelcome. If they would stay home and attempt to fix their problems, as we try to fix our problems, maybe then we might get along better. I know illegals, and some confess that twice a year they return home for their free medical care. They do so, without any fear of crossing the so called border without getting caught. They are of course, single males. The only thing they hate about America is our health care system. They will however, use and abuse it when families are involved. I would love to go to the ER and or just a Dr. office and not worry about going bankrupt. We cannot expect to keep giving Aid to other countries while we kill ourselves. Illegals are like a cancer that we need to rid ourselves of before we all end up like a third world country. Of course, if one were to look at the actions, decisions and policies of our government, anyone would conclude, that all the conspiracy nuts are, in fact, not nuts, but aware and vocal. Everyone else is either in deep denial or complacent, hoping that they'll be part of the few remaining elite because they went along with the destruction of America (the way it was intended to be).

If people would realize that we have more in common with "illegal" immigrants than we do with the capitalist elite class, we could unite and wage a class war instead of a race war! Can you see what the problem is? CAPITALISM and NEOLIBERALISM!

Immigrants are merely trying to survive just like you and me. We should join hands with them. We have the numbers to take these corporate elites out of power.

To solve the illegal immigration debate all we have to do is follow the example of Mexico and deal with illegal immigrants the same way they do when illegals from their southern border try to sneak in.

enters or stays in this country illegally. I would never do it; it's against the law and, to me, it's becoming an invader. I wanted to go to Australia at one time, then I found out that I was past the age where Australia would accept me as a LEGAL immigrant. (So much for that dream) Nations have borders for a reason. I believe Mexico has a border that requires a passport to cross over, that Mexico (as a rule) does not hire foreigners, that foreigners can't buy Mexican land, that the Mexican health system (such as it is) does not treat foreigners for free--in other words, all the little perks that illegals get in the USA are not available to foreigners who enter Mexico legally or illegally. I believe Mexico deports (or jails) its illegals but expects the USA to furnish Mexican ILLEGALS with jobs, welfare, medical care, education (hospitals are forbidden to turn them away or to even ask if they are American citizens) our schools are on the same constrictions--we must teach the children of illegals along with American citizens...our prison system is now becoming predominantly Hispanic. The worst American "gang" is the Hispanic "gang" called "Mara Salvatrucha," which was begun by illegal Hispanics. The Indian reservation at Wind Rock, WY was nearly decimated when a Mexican drug gang (composed of illegals) targeted the Indians for meth abuse and got half the residents there hooked on meth...so it's no wonder that there is a backlash in the USA as our jobs disappear into Mexico, China, and other foreign nations. Illegals are coming in from Asia also, although the fallout has not been as disastrous--yet. Illegals are coming here from all over, but it's the Hispanics that are the most visible and the most VOCAL. We need to have borders; we need to make sure that we take care of American citizens before we extend ourselves to propping up poverty stricken people from _anywhere_. That's not being unking or simplistic; it's being realistic. This nation is under great stress at this time, and we have not yet begun to recognize the fallout that is going to come from having 12 to 20 million illegal residents here needing the same help as any American citizen. There are not enough jobs for all; there aren't even enough decent paying jobs for 300 million American citizens, let alone the poor of Mexico and elsewhere. There's no such thing as a free lunch. Someone has to pay. And our government is now paying the bills with credit cards. Last, but certainly not least, many Hispanics feel that huge parts of the United States of America belong to Mexico and should again be recognized as such. Who is right or wrong is not the issue anymore. Texas, California, New Mexico, Arizona, are all a part of the USA now, and anyone who wants to change that status is, indeed, an invader and should be treated as such.

like in the past the GOP wanted the cheep labor and this gets people like me (only a High School diploma) screwed hard core. What do you want me to do, only earn $8 bucks an hour in Boston Massachusetts with rent $1000 in tha Ghetto (Roxbury)... oh wait, I to can go on the government dole and become a "slave" or "indentured servant" as some guy or girl comes down once in a blue moon with a suit from Macy's to say "vote for me or those evil rich white Republicans will leave you starving in the street" while I'm re-job trained to pick up trash at the side of the street as I ride the bus pass the shutter factory that just packed up and move to _______________ Developing Country with WTO/IMF money my taxes paid into.

What the Fuck is America coming too? This is not 1909, shit this is not even 1972, we don't make shit anymore and the few things we do make, well if you are in most parts of the nation, you better be bi-lingual for starters so you can explain why the meat packing machine is jammed and for that you might get a extra quarter, from $8 bucks to $8.25, whoot that might not get you to shopping for groceries at Whole Foods but you can maybe you can go from Nati Light to Bud Light again (but save the bottles so you can return them on Sunday for the $0.05).

All you yuppies in training (College Kids off of daddies money) you know... you Spoiled Brat Marxist whom keep dropping "1" ratings on everybody post because you feel that we are the worlds welfare case and packing meat, cleaning toilets, picking up trash is a job you'll never have to do well that the fuck I'm going to do? Crack you over the head for your purse, sale you your weed, X pills, Z bars (so you can concentrate to get that 4.0), blow, smack or whatever the hell you kids are calling it... oh shit, the Illegals (see MS-13) are moving into the drug market too and killing anybody that seems like a rival (non gang related black youth) however we are huffing and puffing when a 13 year old white girl gets the "bend over and cough" treatment.

Progressives are creating this world of despair. Some of you ANet-ers see the great scam and we need to form like Voltron and stand in force. We can arugre about single payer healthcare later (who do you really think more than half of the20 million whom are not insured = Illegals cuz)! Some of us are not going to go to college and we will like to make shit, deliver shit and build you Yuppie Scum your Mcmansion's, install your solar panels, unclog your toilets, pave your roads and fix your cars while we ride the bus. We just want to earn a living wage that is not depressed by the floods of slave labor

Anyone who needs a job please apply at your nearest farm. With the crackdown on illegal immigration, many farmers may not be able to harvest their crops. In Washington state farmers are saying that there aren't any people applying for picking jobs. They might have to let the vegetables and fruit rot in the fields. So anyone needing a job look into harvesting and farm for some income. Otherwise we might have food shortages in this country. If you think food prices are going up now, just wait until very little of this year's crop is harvested. Don't let those illegals take all those jobs away from you.

exists outside the bounds of the laws we've set up since our invasion 500 some odd years ago. In order to move forward in a just way, we need to consider how we all got here. Some of our ancestors were "legal". Some were forced here against their will. And some of our ancestor's thought it was God's will that they "own" this land and lay down the law.

Hmmnnn... Justice... ???... !!!

Illegal is illegal is illegal....

Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
No matter what perceived injustice illegal aliens may be nursing to justify their invasion of this country, the fact is that Mexico and the US are both sovereign nations, with the absolute right to control their own borders and limit or encourage immigration as they see fit. There are legal steps available for those who truly want to come here and become Americans. Illegal aliens just don't want to go through the process. Many of their countrymen/women do go through the legal process and become citizens after years of hard work and study, but illegals are line-jumpers, who don't want to have to bother with doing things the right way.

With our own population soaring above 300 million, and threatening to become over 400-500 million in 2050, we can ill afford to allow third world countries to continue dumping their excess population across our borders. Those countries, including Mexico, need to take care of their own people, not send them to us to take care of!

Seal the borders, identify and deport illegals and punish employers of illegals. And oh yes, do away with the anchor baby loophole: no one should get US citizenship from being born here to illegal aliens. Almost no other industrialized country does this and neither should we.

The issue is not anti Mexican bias it is the issue of importing poverty
Posted by: Unrepentant Heretic on May 13, 2009 11:31 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I have always been a hardcore supporter of unlimited and free immigration but after reading the statistics about Mexican second and third generation immigrants and their impact on US economy I have somewhat changed my opinion.

Today I advocate free immigration but only for those with a high school diploma or higher education. The US cannot continue to import poverty and cannot allow immigrants that do not assimilate and do not become a part of the American Dream.

All immigration groups prior to Mexicans have one or two generations later risen fast in the economic ladder, become as an average American citizen, becoming a part of the American middle class, not so with the Mexicans, they are still poor, still living on welfare and not contributing to the American society. Read the very interesting article by Robert J. Samuelson Importing Poverty .

The government last week released its annual statistical report on poverty and household income. As usual, we -- meaning the public, the media and politicians -- missed a big part of the story. It is this: The stubborn persistence of poverty, at least as measured by the government, is increasingly a problem associated with immigration. As more poor Hispanics enter the country, poverty goes up. This is not complicated, but it is widely ignored.

Only an act of willful denial can separate immigration and poverty. The increase among Hispanics must be concentrated among immigrants, legal and illegal, as well as their American-born children.

Why is it important to get this story straight?

One reason is truthfulness. It's usually held that we've made little, if any, progress against poverty. That's simply untrue. Among non-Hispanic whites, the poverty rate may be approaching some irreducible minimum: people whose personal habits, poor skills, family relations or bad luck condemn them to a marginal existence. Among blacks, the poverty rate remains abysmally high, but it has dropped sharply since the 1980s. Moreover, taking into account federal benefits (food stamps, the earned-income tax credit) that aren't counted as cash income would further reduce reported poverty.

We shouldn't think that our massive efforts to mitigate poverty have had no effect. Immigration hides our grudging progress.

I am willing to support African Americans with large government subsidies and welfare programs because the US has an obligation because of the particular circumstances of African Americans being slaves; I see it as a form of damages being paid.

However as Samuelson points out there is no reason to support and subsidize "people whose personal habits, poor skills, family relations or bad luck condemn them to a marginal existence". I do not support deadbeats nor should the taxpayer. Neither am I willing nor should the US tax payer be to support imported poverty, we cannot take in all the poor in the World. Not even our closest ones.

I live in ever-sunny, benighted San Diego, perilously close to Tijuana and Calexico. Here are some things you may not know:

--The illegal aliens who pollute our fair city sneak over the border (now walled) from Mexico.
--The smog that's turning San Diego into a smaller version of LA is generated in Mexico.
--The high incidence of car thefts must be attributed to Mexicans, who smoke a lot of marijuana.
--Swine flu--like HIV--is a made-in-Mexico disease with global repercussions.

For a more complete dossier on Mexican sins and derelictions, tune to Lou Dobbs on CNN.

I say it is mostly corporates fault they bribe our congress into giving tax breaks to move jobs to Mexico where they also bribe that government into letting them pay ridiculously low wages.
A few years ago Levis and Wangler moved jobs that paid decently from here in Greensboro,NC where they were based for about 100 years to Mexico.
The US employees made those brands great. Soon as the corporates decided they could make more money selling us out. They went. I wrote to them, their excuse was that paying US wages hurt the bottom line for the shareholders. I wrote again saying I would not buy their product. Levis with tags that read Hecho en Mexico or Made in Russia. They did move one plants equipment to Russia.
I try to boycott outsourcing companies. I am gonna be nekid soon because I am having trouble finding jeans and clothes made in US. Remember Look for the Union/made in the USA label ads from years ago? I did have to break down and buy sneakers(injury and can't wear my Carolina boots right now).
So we end corporate campaign bribes to our congress critters, it is not a be all end all, but it would be a good start.
Also the corpses that hire undocumented workers should pay huge fines and their officers land their asses in jail for several years. After all they are the real traitors.

Seeing the wealth of "enlightened" comments on here I think that if you wanted to display terrible American racism you could have just wrote a two word article: "Mexican Immigration" and then just let the comments flow.

The intensity with which some people here defend this bigotry is eerily reminiscent of the kind of sentiment visited upon Jews in early Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia.

Mexico and Latin America in general aren't a race. There are many races there. I happen to be Hispanic, most of my friends are Hispanic, my wife is Hispanic; and I am opposed to all minds of immigration across the border with Mexico.

It's about culture - not race. Mexico is the way Mexico is on account of Mexicans - and their way of life. I simply don't want to live that way.

Neither do those - ever kind of vicious criminal imaginable - who continue to pour over the border (then march in our streets while flying our flag upside down).

noooo...its rather simple. like everybody who immigrated here legally. you get in line, then take your test, pass the test, assimilate while becoming a citizen!! not sneak over with a pound of weed duct taped to your gut!! easily acquiring some unsuspecting idiots ssn# and then get the job that your applying for because the employer knows he'll work dirt cheap without any lip!!! oh!! all this while the 'old lady' runs to welfare and signs up in santa ana...thats here in the oc, gets all the free sh*t and all you idiots just keep paying for it in higher taxes. arnie, is already trying to figure out how to unload...what 15 to 25 billion in debt and is talking about laying off a bunch of people. its the cost of all the 'illegals' thats killing this 'cali' economy. that may ok with you but its not for the vast majority thats paying for it....... nitwit!!!!!!!!

No amount of illegal or legal immigration can do as much damage to the country as the Wall Street criminals have done. Mexicans issues are small potatoes compared to that global heist.

How Is Wanting to Keep ALL Illegal Aliens out "Racist"?

Living on "La Frontera" para 60+ anos, I hear the Hispanics here gripe more strongly than the media against the illegal immigrants.

Most of the Americans along La Frontera have been Americans since Tejas became a State, my family included. I have family that are still Mexican, they come and visit, but if they want to be citizens, they need to go through the process. And, to prevent stereo-typing, I am puro anglo. Why is it that my more liberal friends stereotype my Anglo and my Hispanic family the most?

With high unemployment for Americans, many of my friends and family are very upset with our governments half-efforts to halt the flow of illegals and its non-existent efforts to return them.

As citizens we have had draconion measures imposed on our travel (1 million are on the no-fly list and no one will tell them why. 1 million secret trials and convictions?) because of the acts of several illegal aliens in New York. None of them were Americans but we impose no fly rules on Americans of all colors.

And, then we have fools who will say they represent us. That Hispanicos all favor illegal immigrant amnesty and we think anyone against it is racist. As John Stoessel would say 'GIMME A BREAK!'. But, since he, too, is un blanco, he is not to be trusted.

This type of stupidity is why so many Hispanicos are going Republican, WAKE UP DEMOCRATS! It is, also, why some of my family have legally immigrated back to Mexico.

I would rather be around an admitted racist.

Some of my best friends are admitted racists and we still enjoy one another's company. Its called TOLERANCE. And the author of this article has none.

The Megamerge Dissolution Solution

Knee-jerk racism and xenophobia are sad and produce nothing good. Let sweet reason rule.
The age-old pesky U.S.-Mexico border problem has taxed the resources of both countries, led to long lists of injustices, and appears to be heading only for worse troubles in the future. Guess what? The border problem can never be solved. Why? Because the border IS the problem! It's time for a paradigm change.

Never fear, a satisfying, comprehensive solution is within reach: Megamerge: the Dissolution Solution. Simply dissolve the border along with the failed Mexican government, and megamerge the two countries under U.S. law, with mass free 2-way migration eventually equalizing the development and opportunities permanently, with justice and without racism.

Google "Megamerge: The Dissolution Solution" and read the full details, then decide if we're on the right path with xenophobia and racism.
