Laughter and Lots of Angry Republicans After Wanda Sykes's Jokes Blast Limbaugh and Palin

AlterNet. Posted May 11, 2009.

The stand-up comic stirs it up at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, ragging Rush Limbaugh for his OxyContin habits.

Stand-up comic Wanda Sykes went for Rush Limbaugh's jugular at Barack Obama's first White House Correspondents' Association dinner on Saturday night.

"Rush Limbaugh said he hopes this administration fails," Sykes began. "So you're saying, 'I hope America fails', you're, like, 'I don't care about people losing their homes, their jobs, our soldiers in Iraq'. He just wants the country to fail.

"To me, that's treason. He's not saying anything differently than what Osama bin Laden is saying. You know, you might want to look into this, sir, because I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker. But he was just so strung out on OxyContin he missed his flight. Rush Limbaugh, I hope the country fails, I hope his kidneys fail, how about that? He needs a good waterboarding, that's what he needs."

From the Huffington Post:

Wanda Sykes ...took shots at Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and former VP candidate Sarah Palin. She speculated that Limbaugh was actually the 20th hijacker on 9/11, derided Hannity for not living up to his pledge to be waterboarded for the troops, and made a fabulous off-color joke about Sarah Palin pulling out at the last minute.

Sykes became the first African-American women and the first openly gay person to ever perform jokes at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. In 1993, HuffPost's own Elayne Boosler became the first woman to do so, and in 2005 Cedric the Entertainer became the first African-American to do so. They have both been unique in that record up until now.

Right-wingers like Pat Buchanan were quick to go after Sykes. Buchanan said her jokes will "hurt" the public impression of the dinner event. And the Washington Times' Amana Carpenter argued "went over the line." And pro-GOP bloggers launched their own attacks.

Meanwhile the rest of us laughed. Will Rush Limbaugh respond to Sykes's stand-up routine? If he does, he risks resurfacing the controversy over his addiction to Oxycontin -- something Limbaugh took great pains to keep hush-hush.

Funny and well deserved. Now let's get down to something important: exposing the lies of 9/11.

Yes, we have finally beat 'em up and won!
The conservattive nasties are on the defense and looking silly, after years of their vicious attacks and their power to sway public opinion.
But now that they are on the outs, and Bush and Cheyney have little power, why is it we still cater to them?
Yes, we are going after their policies of torture, but it will fade away, as too many will relive the horror and fear brought about by watching the reruns of 9/11 and re-understanding that these guys just did what they had to, torture and imprisonment, to keep us safe. We will lose the battle to bring them to justice for torture.

But bringing the facts of 9/11 will finally show the American people just how heinous these Neocons are. And we can do it now. Obama is master. Put some pressure on him, and he will help to determine the truth about 9/11. But it has to start in the media.
The work has been done, the proof is there, that there was a major coverup of the reality of 9/11. Contradictions, lies, impossibilities, contortion of the facts, all of it just waiting to be told.

We need to finally bring the real story of that day, a day that still brings us wars and occupations, huge increases in military expenditures we don't have the money for, the continued trashing of the Constitution. We can do it now. Why won't Alternet begin a serious look into the evidence that just sits there waiting to be used to bring us the real story of 9/11?

I would definitely get in touch with my inner woman for her. I'd have the house all cleaned, dinner ready and a big fatty rolled and ready for her to come home.

Even when she's toned down a notch out of deference to the dignity and solemnity of the occasion, the woman is wicked funny. But relevant too, I think that whole theory about Rush Limbaugh needs to be explored a little further.

I guess they and Hollywood had to waste taxpayer money on these silly goofy comedy shows just like the Republicans would and still do, eh? Bread and circuses may be fun but Obama had better get his shit together because he's already losing the center by killing single payer healthcare, refusing to legalize industrial hemp, allowing EFCA to hang dry, call for more bailouts to Wall Street, calling for more wars for oil, doing nothing to reform these shoddy "free trade" deals, you name it. Glad I didn't bother to watch this entertainment bullshit but Death Wish IV and V instead.

Eight years ago, a fascist coup took place here. The White House has been desecrated by traitors who consider democracy anathema, used the Bill of Rights for toilet paper, who have looted the country more thoroughly than a barbarian invader could have dreamed, and slaughtered tens of thousands so the puppet could wear a codpiece and strut as he spent the lives of American fighting to get the guy who tried to kill his daddy and so he could show daddy he was the bigger man.

Meanwhile the puppetmaster pulled the strings to loot another country of it's oil, playing on the peacock's ego to get authorizations for illegal bases (to keep the oil) and to further loot the conqueror and the vanquished by destroying an entire country, getting the contract to rebuild and making shoddy construction and graft the expected norm in the war zone.

Dealing with opposition was simple: bug everybody - not just a few journalists. Nixon was a piker. Then blackmail the legislature to ensure compliance and make sure that everyone else knows that arbitrary arrest, imprisonment and torture are ON the table.

Use "National Security" as a bludgeon. Act as dictator, pretend "consultation" with congress when it is really dictation, implicate them in your crimes (because they made no outcry) while making it very clear that any outcry will bring immediate imprisonment.

Rig the vote in every way possible to maintain the illusion of democracy while maintaining power wherever you can control the electoral machinery - regardless of the vote.

This cabal are murderers, thieves, cowards and traitors - the most evil of men and women - and they have so distorted the dialog that there is serious doubt as to whether the law applies/will be applied to any of them at all.

After all, laws were enacted by congress - who the treasonous cabal habitually defied.

Calling these fascist traitors by their proper name is considered radical - only because truth has been abandoned for ideological rationalization. Religious and political fanaticism has been treated as mainstream and rational for so long that our collective judgment is subject to the whims of the most evil and least sane and intelligent among us.

"You have abandoned us!" the newspapers moan.

"No," I say, "you have abandoned us." Every time you repeated a lie unchallenged, passed off paid spokesmen as honest brokers with sincere opinions, knowingly spread lies, hyped fear, presented phony "balance" as meaningful, stifled honest debate and trivialized reality, you were abandoning US.

Good riddance.

I say to other media. Some really good reporters are being tossed aside like used kleenex. Hire them now - before they find other uses for their considerable talents - or you will suffer the same fate. Spend some cash for real investigation and let the chips fall where they may. Give us real news; make the corrupt quiver in fear; expose the lies, shine bright lights in all the corners of corporate and governmental corruption, or this I promise you. As went the dinosaurs, as go the dead tree purveyors of propaganda, so will you go.

Our tolerance for bullshit ain't what it used to be.

After watching that routine, yeah, I worried that it might cause problems for Obama, but I seriously can not WAIT to see how Rush Limbaugh responds to that whole 20th high-jacker thing. I mean, the guy who said Kurt Cobain deserved to die because he was a "druggy" was, at the time, addicted to a drug that was almost chemically identical to the drug Kurt was on... I don't think Rush can possibly respond to the high-jacker thing without responding to the Oxy thing, and there's no WAY he can ignore the high-jacker thing. I didn't think Wanda did that great of a job, but I think she struck a serious blow to Limbaugh's credibility among his fans, and for that, I commend her.

YOU TELL 'EM, WANDA...!

That fat junkie blowhard Limp-Bough is indeed a traitor, and as Wanda points out, no better than Osama bin Laden.

Just because the "Conservative" way has been proven to be a failure, Limp-Bough is busy denouncing the society that worked--Liberalism--and in effect, saying "We'll be B-a-a-a-c-c-k"

This pig POS--Wanda's exactly right. The Limp-Bough needs a good HARD waterboarding, and every red-blooded American is itching to give it to him, after his "I hope America fails" remarks.

Now the CONS are trying to say that Barack Obama's having a hard time getting this country back on track because of DEMOCRATS?
What complete PIGS! This fecal shitpile of a so-called "party"--have got to have gone around the bend.

We have to be vigilant. The schools now teach our children NOTHING. Only the magnet schools do, and - until recently - they soft-pedaled the First Great Depression. I guess the CONS were behind that one too.

But you know what? Every parent and EVERY KID going through this Second Depression--has got to teach their kids one thing--and THEIR KIDS have to teach it to THEIR KIDS--and maybe then the schoolbooks will be shamed into picking up on these periodic ruiners of the American economy. Make it a "kid" thing--and teach our kids to NEVER EVER PULL THE "R" LEVER ON ELECTION DAY, EVER AGAIN.

That the Republicans are liars and thieves. They even tried to steal our Social Security! Yep, we got to teach our kids--and teach them to not listen to the Republicans when they say that the "Democrats were at fault!" That's kind of like saying that a "volcanic eruption is what caused the lava flows".

Yep. In this case the "volcanic eruption" was the Republican party in power, dismantling our country AND our freedoms. The "lava flows" that followed--the loss of jobs, the wholesale loss of homes--that's logically what happens when people vote republican.

Wanda Sykes--you GO, GIRL! P-L-E-N-T-Y of great material there, in each of these animals' 8 year misbegotten rule. By yourself, you could kill these people as a political organization. And--wait until the REST of the comedy world picks up on what "naturals" the republicans are, for ridicule!

when the entertainer Rush Limbaugh asserts Colin Powell supports Obama, because both are black.

The same could be said of Dick Cheney who is a multi-convicted drunk driver with 5 Vietnam deferments, and his support for another substance abuser Rush Limbaugh, who also was a coward when it was his turn to serve too.

If the shoe fits, wear it.

I think Wanda is funny. If what she said had been on comedy central i would have loved it.
but it was at the White House Press Dinner. The President of the United States was 5 feet away. There was such a lack of dignity that i was embarrassed for him. His speech was far better. It made fun but was not vicious. And Wanda's will give the neo cons food for weeks. Why don't we just ignore the bastards?
sorry but that is just my opinion, i could be wrong.

A Quick flash towards BillO afterwards showed a pouty baby - obviously not because of the jabs at Rush or Palin, but because no one mentioned HIS name-LOL. He and Beck must have had to have a two man concilatory circle jerk after words...Who needs spit when you have so many tears?
I have to say Wanda was good- but Obama's joke writers were better. He had so many double edge jokes I had to figure out which way he meant it.
Boner- a hue not found in the Human population- yeah Alcholics get a weird ashy look after decades of saucing it up all day...Oh he was referring to his Fake Bake, oops. Took me a minute.
Hillary's counsel to Arelene- "can't Beat 'em Join 'em"...Yeah it's great she finally, recinded her Repug membership card and really joined the Democratic party too...Oh he just meant his Administration.
and after Hillary's RFK assasination invocation THREE times during the primaries- was that a joke or a Statement about her return from Mexico? God knows she and her legion of Blue lap Dogs are still salivating like Pavlovs Dogs everytime someone mentions 2012.

I personally have no axe to grind with Baby George, his father, nor Prescott Bush his grandfather. But in some states, if I committed such an act, I would lose not only my home, my car, any thing that can be sold on the free market. In effect, I would be pennyless. And, for this country to even consider if Geo junior can rip this country blind, and then have the audacity to try and pretend "I didn't do it," is a joke. Too bad you have finally got that head out of the toilet. What I said eight years ago, is the final truth. Then you called me unpatriotic, "commie," "queer," traitor, and drug user. You all know now Bush is a bastard.

And, our beloved "savior" tells me to "let the past lie, look for the future. Bush can hide behind his political party -- just like Nixon -- and you still play like he did nothing wrong. You aren't crazy, you're out of your collective minds. That's like saying Child molesters can be a president. So very sad to say this, we don't deserve freedom-- the right to have an assembly, the right to protest. Protest what? To whom? When the next basket case crawls in, pretending to have the answers, ask him. Bush never said he "promised" you anything. Contract with America? No child left behind? Get a damned life, then come running your white pearlies. Until that time, don't open you mouth and make an ass of yourselves, let the GOP do that nasty-ass chore all by its lonesome.

IT SEEMS like all the Black Folk are sitting around dissing RUSH LIMBAUGH, the stereotypical WHITE MALE BORN TO PRIVILEGE AND WEALTH who has NO idea of what it is like to fear homelessness and starvation.

I am NOT a WHITE MALE BORN TO PRIVILEGE AND WEALTH and I have been hungry a LOT and I have been homeless... I was fortunate enough to find a way out but if this economy continues to be bad, I won't find my way out this time...

What DOES bother me about this event is that I am half-Native American and a quarter Hispanic and a quarter white AND I LOOK WHITE like many Cherokee and Choctaw.

So how long before these good Black folks start generalizing this ridicule and hate against ALL WHITE -LOOKING PEOPLE?

Limbaugh brings it on himself. He is the CLOWN PRINCE for the NEW WORLD ORDER BUSH AND CHANEY CROWD who still appear to be very much in charge except for this interlude when they have ordained that the Black Folk regulated to domestic duties once upon a time can rule the US for one term until their REAL heir apparent is ready. I listen to Rush because between his rants of "GO OUT AND GET A JOB" when there ARE NO LONGER THAT MANY JOBS THAT HAVEN'T BEEN OUTSOURCED or ELIMINTATED BY TECHNOLOGY--JOBS THAT PAY A LIVING WAGE, THAT IS -- Rush actually has insider information on what the ruling class is thinking and predictions on what they will do. So you should listen to him.
JUST BECAUSE I LISTEN TO HIM IN A HORRIFIED FASCINATION DOES NOT MEAN I SUPPORT HIS IDEAS ANY MORE THAN THE FACT THAT BECAUSE I LOOK WHITE I AM WHITE... But I need to speak up to make sure this well-justified sentiment DOES NOT TRANSFER TO ALL WHITES ( And people who LOOK White). After all, President Obama had a WHITE mother!

I am afraid that the hostility, resentment and even hatred some Black people have felt towards the discriminatory white people and expressed against Limbaugh ( whose personal life I despise!) will now be expressed against ALL people who look white whether or not they actually discriminated against Black people or not. And today, only the ruling elite and their ignorant Neo-Nazi flunkies are the only idiots who continue the racism and prejudice...

This little performance for the benefit for the NEW HOOD is going to give many white people ( and those who LOOK white) cause for pause. Not that I am a great admirer of the CORRUPT BUSH & CHANEY PATRONAGE SYSTEM... I just do not want to be stereotyped as one of these elitists whom I despise regardless of their ethnicity.

This little episode may be the precursor of a general unleashing of new episodes of RACIAL HATRED and DIVISION that no one can afford in these days !

Talk about HATEFUL SPEECH... you just wait until all these shows are aired today... these blowhards are going to try to rip her to shreds.

But Wanda can take care of herself. I'm sure she will be given many platforms to shoot back. I'm sure The Daily Show and Olbermann will have her on as a guest to pour more hilarious truth on these professional asshats.

These days the Republican Party is laughable enough all by itself that Wanda's effort here is like "Piling On" in football. They're down already and doing a great job of setting themselves up for a long run at the bottom of the heap, so why give them the witty jibes?

Just because they fully deserve it doesn't seem like enough of a reason to me. Maybe we could set up an offshore corporation to help fund their recovery as a meaningful political party representing centrist Conservative thinking?

Maybe not. ;--)

This "outrage" about what Wanda Sykes said is just more manufactured bullshit by the wingnuts. Remember, these are the same folks that danced around the "kill him!" statements being thrown around at McPalin rallies. And did any of the righties come out to say that Flaherty had gone too far when he basically said a soldier would use 2 bullets on Nancy Pelosi?

Suddenly Blimpo is a victim?? That's freaking joke. I hope Wanda tells all these people who are *outraged* to go get a life, there's no apologizing for what she said, but that what the GOPers want because they all end up apologizing to the "recovering addict" at some point.

The real stars of the show were Barack and Michelle Obama. Barack was funny and Michelle can show off those arms any day.

Wanda Sykes was great too.

I don't know how it comes across on video (can't load it at the moment), but on paper, sorry, but it isn't funny. Instead it's just kind of a weird, bitter rant. Rush Limbaugh is a good target and he creates plentiful material for ridicule every time he opens his mouth. So why harp on the Oxycontin thing? Frankly, who cares? The guy has personal problems, but that's not what makes him an asshole. Fact is, Limbaugh is good at his game. Admittedly he's working an easy, read stupid, crowd, but he's good at it. Blowing his bloated BS barge out of the water is going to take more than snide, angry comments about the drugs and the "I want him to fail" comment. Of course, they want BO to fail. That ain't news. Sykes response just sounds small, weak and desperate. Exactly the way Limbaugh keeps telling the world we (left, sane people) sound.

What happened to the Sara Palin jokes, my gosh there is enough material do go all night. She is just so gosh darn soccor mom hysterical, that I could make up things all day. I might add she the only soccor mom I know that carries guns! She is a joke unto herself. Belives out dated infortmation on sex ( which didn't even work for her own kids) and everything else she does. But she can not be a good person with a good soul as much as she enjoys killing of the animals. She take everything in alaska and make it barren for a dollar she greedy, killing machine that is all. as For georgie I hope never to have to look o his face again... He has made haveing wildlife or wildness a joke. He doesn't need it so why should anyone else have it?? he should be punished just for what he has done to the animals in the USA. He sold them all out for a few bucks from the oil company. Hate is a really strong word, but today I really hate Sara Palin and THe whole George bush cabinet.. He should have left and taken Ken slazar with him. I hope they are happy with all the blood they have on their hands

Whoever he got to write those jokes is good!

I loved the Boehner jokes... "John Boehner is a person of color... just not a color ever seen before in humans."

and...

"Dick Cheney couldn't be here tonight... he's home writing his memoir. It's tentatively entitled, 'How to Shoot Friends and Interrogate People.'

I loved it.

I can think of no better targets than those she picked, but was not impressed with her material or delivery. Kind of like settling for a field goal instead of a touchdown.

When I turned on the evening news yesterday evening, after a profitable afternoon watching Formula 1 racing from Spain and Chicago Cubs baseball (the Cardinals' game wasn't broadcast in my area yesterday), those Commie-pinko-f*gs of the Mainstream Media had their collective tits all in an uproar about Ms. Syke's jokes.

Well, sez I to myself, this should have a shelf-life of about a nano second.

But no.

This morning the "liberal" media in the form of both ABC's Good Morning Amerika and NBC's Today were still harrumphing about Ms. Skyes joke. Like there ain't better topics for those millionaire talking heads to discuss?

Wanda Sikes has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Republicons have no sense of humour. Her speech on Sat. was hilariously funny and I laughed harder when the camera panned the Fox table and showed all those stoney glares. They can dish it but they can't take it. We should call them the Republiwussies. I couldn't believe Bill Bennett yesterday waxing indignant over Ms. Sikes' punch lines. I have heard much worse come out of the mouths of Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage and Sean Hannity than I have EVER heard from our side. What a bunch of conservative crybabies. Boo hoo!

It seems to me that these two video clips are proof-perfect that the best way to beat these negative, hateful, blind, selfish bastards is through humor & ridicule –– neither of which they can stand up to. respond to, understand, or comprehend (especially since all comments are based upon indisputable truths). These are Classic Clips ... plus, how nice to be able to finally laugh @those scary, overblown & overweight people. Good on her!

I don't see how any informed person could laugh at anything associated with that tragic mockery of the First Amendment known as the Press Club. Colbert's routine was brilliant and biting, but too true to be funny. This year's event was especially unfunny because Obama attended.

Mr. Guitar, there might be some 9/11 Truthers who are also Holocaust deniers, but I would say that most of them are not. For example, I don't think that Alex Jones and that guy who made Loose Change are holocaust deniers. If they were, we all would've heard about it by now.

There seems to be less correspondents there every year, all celebs and politicians now. Just curious as to why it's okay for Wanda to dish it out, but when a guy said something truly funny about Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama B, everyone was up in arms and issuing apologies. Seems like the can't take it goes both ways! WaaaaaH.

all nailed it/us/them -

wanda was being nice, trying to find the ironic prayerful God Help Us funniness while addressing the wholesale evil we all pretty much realize has hit the proverbial fan and is raining down and out on all of us -

she was masterful and funny and biting to those who so well-deserved much worse -

colbert or imus or keillor - i'd like to see the Three of Them collaborate next year - beats the KC Rove yada -

or laura bush saving the night as a desperate housewife - which might have been funny if she weren't ignoring a truly desperate COUNTRY and world -

The really sad thing about the whole Wanda Sykes uproar is that this is yet again another statement of the level of civility this presidency is heading towards. What happened to hope and change, and then the next thing we hear is "I hope Rush dies". Where is the hope in these statements, where is the change from the last 8 years, I wanted to believe that Obama was a new type of President, I wanted him to be a higher level of culture and civility, but there he was laughing away at what that cackling harridan Sykes was spewing, then a couple of days later there was this weak distancing and dismissal from the WH. I Wanted to believe with all my being that this time it was going to be different, but I am growing more and more fearful each day that my hopes will be forever dashed by the realization of a false image sold by a corrupt media.

Limbaugh thinks Obama's policies will destroy America, therefore, he hopes Obama will fail; Much like the left though the Bush policies were destructive to America and that he would fail. . .

The left seems to think LYING about their opponents is "just wonderful" and "so funny."

Watched it on C-SPAN and she was GREAT

C-SPAN carried the occasion live and I LOVED it all, and I am not even a Democrat but an independent libertarian minded person. She was hilarious and her joke about Pailin and pulling out of the affair and the issue of abstinence was hilarious.

And her joking about Rush Limbaugh being high on oxycontin and thus he missed the flight as the last terrorist was equally funny. So the folks at the Fox news table winced as did the folks from the conservative publications.

For eight years they were the ones joking about the Democrats and liberals. Or did they forget that?

And lets not forget she made some hilarious jokes about President Obama. Really funny. But heaven forbid she joke about any conservatives or Republicans.

Remember when the Bush administration was using underlings to slam the Democrats and Obama when he was running for President?

If it was good enough for them then why are they complaining when the Obama administration has people doing it?
