Fox News' Unhinged, Irrational Obama Attacks Stir up Violent Right-Wing Militants

Imagine if Fox News had been on the air back on February 28, 1993, just months into the new Democratic president's first term, when agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms attempted to serve warrants on David Koresh's Branch Davidian compound, located on the outskirts of Waco, Texas. Agents arrived because federal authorities got a tip that Koresh and the followers of the misguided messiah were stockpiling weapons.
The authorities were right. Outgunned, ATF agents quickly met resistance from the Davidians, who had a .50-caliber rifle, machine guns, and more than a million rounds of ammunition at their disposal. The shootout lasted hours and became the longest in American law-enforcement history. In the end, four ATF agents were killed, and 16 were wounded. Inside the compound, five Davidians were killed and scores more injured, including Koresh, who was shot in the hip and the wrist. The gunbattle signaled the start of a 51-day standoff between Koresh and federal authorities.
Rupert Murdoch's all-news channel didn't debut in America until October 1996, but it's chilling to consider the what-ifs of how today's Fox News lineup of doomsday, anti-government prophets would have reacted to controversial and defining news events in the early 1990s -- like Waco.
As news of the failed Waco raid broke, would Fox News' notoriously weepy and apocalyptic host Glenn Beck have broken down on the air and wept for the tyranny that he saw unfolding in the government's raid? While FBI negotiators tried to win the release of Koresh's followers, would Beck have warned viewers that the president would "take your gun away one way or another"?
Amidst the 51-day siege, would Beck have warned against the creeping "totalitarian state" inside America? Would the host have gravely announced that we'd "come to a very dangerous point in our country's long, storied history"?
Would Beck have routinely vilified President Clinton as a fascist? Would he have told viewers that he wanted to debunk the militia-movement conspiracy theory that the federal government was building prison camps, but that he just couldn't knock the story down -- and that, at first glance, it appeared to be "half true"?
And can you even imagine Beck's on-air reaction when the FBI's final, failed assault on the Waco compound unfolded on live TV on April 19, 1993? As the horrific images of the compound going up in flames and the grim realization spread that Koresh's followers were not coming out -- that they had staged a mass suicide (and in some cases, executions), rather than surrendering to federal officers -- would Beck have claimed that the scene of destruction reminded him of the "early days of Adolf Hitler"?
Would he have invited self-styled militiamen onto his show to game out how the pending civil war against the Clinton-led tyranny was likely to play out and to ponder whether members of the U.S. military would fire on American citizens when the blood began to flow in the streets? And setting aside all decency, would Beck -- post-Waco -- have pretended to douse a Fox News colleague in gasoline and, lamenting how the government was disenfranchising its citizens, then urged Clinton to just "set us on fire," or pleaded that it would be better if Clinton had just shot Beck "in the head"? (That's how Koresh died inside the Waco compound: from a bullet to the head.)
Based on the paranoid, anti-government rhetoric that Fox News has embraced since President Obama's inauguration, it's no leap to suspect that if Murdoch's outlet were broadcasting in the early 1990s -- and if it were broadcasting the same fringe message it's echoing today -- that the militia movement would have found a friend in Fox News during the Waco era and throughout Clinton's first term, when the conspiratorial patriot movements flourished.

To bring up mere blips on the political radar screen of people I never herd of and tie them do domestic terrorist then wrap it up all in a little bow and say "this is Fox News" is silly.
CNN is irrelevant however MSDNC is just that, the new mouthpiece for the current administration however in the America I grew up in we still had a freedom of choice. the 8 o'clock dude can be a hypocrite intern banging insecure freak of nature and the 9 o'clock chick can be factually incorrect 4 out of the 5 days she is on the air and just echo the sediment of "Dems = good, GOP = bad" for a full 22 minutes however in the United States you have the freedom to do just that however you also have the freedom to change the freaking station.
We have to be the dumbest generation when we have all the information at our fingertips but refuse to do the due diligence of looking up the facts beyond wikipedia

I have noticed the speech that was intended to inflame passions and make the divide greater rather than smaller between political factions and community members itself coming from FOX News for a long time. One is led to wonder if this kind of programing falls within the area known as 'the public good'.
How does this kind of programing benefit the people as a whole. Does making enemies count as a benefit?

On the contrary--the left-wing media spent the last eight years vilifying Hillary Clinton. :(
Here's the story, for those whio may have missed it:
The progressives were scared sh*tless Hillary Clinton would win the primary. Since no one hates Democrats more than progressives, they dusted off and repeated all the anti-Clinton smears from the 90s. This is when they weren't calling their fellow Democrats racists and c*nts, or cheating outright.
God help a woman who gets in a progressive's way.
Thanks to all that dirty fighting by the progressive communty, we now have a neocon in the White House, and it's a virtual certainty we will have Republicans back in power in 2012. My money is on Jeb Bush.
Hey--thanks, progs!
Also, since they were willing to repeat right-wing smears against one of their own, none of the progressive blogs have any credibility whatsoever.
They are, after all, known liars.
Who knows if what HuffPo, DailyKos and the rest are saying today is legitimate...or some more crap they lifted from the right-wing smear machine? With Fox, at least you know the bias.
Right Will Eat Itself

Here's their problem: They know that the insane, "trickle down", voodoo economics of the "Reagan Revolution" has been exposed for all time and eternity to be nothing better than a two-bit scam - the economic equivalent of Three Card Monty. In order for them to survive politically, it is essential that they do everything humanly possible to ensure that President Obama's effort to save the American economy - and, thus, the American people - is a complete, disastrous failure. So, what to do? That's easy! Divide, distort and distract! It's the good old, tried and true, Karl Rove theory of statecraft.
Isn't this fun to watch?
THE RANT

a) Half of all humanity has a below average IQ.
b) Predominantly Republican (Red) states have below average IQs.
c) By definition, the average Republican Party voter has a below average intelligence.
d) In American History, the contemporary Republican philosophy is a failed concept.
e) History has shown that implemented Republican philosophy leads to failure (Absolutely).
REPUBLICANISM: In order to maximize profit, all labor would be so minimally compensated that workers would practically be slaves. Wealth could only be inherited, as it would not be taxed. Elections would be perfunctory, as the outcome was already determined.
(The last country that tried that, collapsed.)

Alternet has some good articles, but oftentimes its editors publish pieces that suffer from superficiality and ideological confusion.
Alternet editors must develop a realist critique of state capitalism, learn to distinguish between state and government, and stop reflexively assuming the Democratic Party represents working people.
The people need media services that are critical of the state, political economy, and the two-party corporate political system.
Your article sometimes function to raise consciousness. But other times they serve the interests of those who strive to entrench false consciousness among the people.

Nowadays, I believe, there is no distinction between the presentation of "facts" and "commentary". Nor do we seem to recognize that the purpose of melding the two is to "entertain" and "manipulate" the viewer.
The responsibility for Fox News is mine and yours. Because we are so willing to accept that "fact" and "commentary" are the same, that "entertainment" and "manipulation" go hand-in-hand, we get Fox New's version of reality. Fox News has the right to exist and to spew the way it does. But I have the right not to watch or listen. And I don't. I have too much self-respect for myself and my intellect.
Therein, I think, lies the responsibility for each of us: to be well-educated enough to understand the difference between "fact" and "commentary", to recognize when we are being "entertained" and "manipulated", so that we can make more judicious choices about which news sources we will attend to.

The inevitable end result is the creation of EXACTLY the thing they claim to hate: a fascist police state.
So what do they REALLY want????
(More money for the military-industrial complex and the private prison industry?)

Curious Alternet readers want to know. After all a headline designed to link fascists with Fox and with McVeigh types was stuck right on the main page.
Irresponsible journalism, Alternet?

We can continue this way of thinking. "I'm not encouraging armed insurrection against an elected government---I'm just outlining an exercise in patriotism." "I am not a racist because I drag black guys down the road chained to the bumper of my pickup truck. You are the racist if you want a special law saying I can't drag black people down the road chained to the bumper of my pickup truck."

The bigger the mess, the more expensive it is to clean up. And Bush left a huge mess.
So if you want to start pointing fingers, start with Bush for the mess in the first place.

Truely the only way to tell The Islamic Extremeist from the Evangelicals is by the book they carrying and the symbols they worship.
In fact they basically promise similar pay offs in the afterlife. 72 virgins, how Rapturous!
What group terrorized Clinic and murdered MD's? Pipe bombed the Atlanta Olympics? And more recently opened fire at a church kids recital. Come on we have our own 'Christian' terrorist sleeper cells to contend with, Hell Bent on proving their 'worthiness' for 'salvation'.
You expound 'Guns and God' to me- you might as well wrap a towel around your head and take up residence in a Cave!Same Shit different Camoflague.

The Branch Davidians may have had unusual and unconventional beliefs, but they didn't deserve to be attacked and burned alive by renegade Federal agents with a John Wayne complex. Anyone with an open mind and a willingness to question the government's use of violence should see "Waco: Rules of Engagement"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120472/
Interviews with local law enforcement reveal that the Davidians were minding their own business, harming nobody, and that child protective services had visited their home and found no evidence of the "abuse" that the Feds tried to allege (a crime that isn't even under BATF jurisdiction)
I love Alternet, but this article is total BS.

It is interesting, however, how Fox is trying to jump on Ron Paul's back after denouncing him and laughing him off during the election. The point is that every president that a majority of voters thought would be different, was not different, Obama is bought and sold on Wall Street, the way every president is owned by the elites. Drinking his Kool-Aid doesn't change things, but hey, your job will be easier when a Republican gets back in there and FOX is the propanganda pulpit once more.

well that sound a hell of a lot like what fox was calling us libs for the past 8 years.
personally, i've got fox news completely blocked as a news source on my google news home page, and (using adblocker plus in firefox) have fox news completely blocked so they get absolutely no ad revenue if i stumble across one of their articles.
i really do hate fox's guts, but fox is just catering to a market - and maybe getting a few fence sitters over to their side, but mainly just catering to a preexisting demographic.

And only deep delusion can be the reasoning behind believing Obama can undo two decades of GOP criminal activities.
Anyone notice he hasn't endorsed any questionable people's policies, but he still works with some of them? He can't magically make all the evil little trolls the Bush's brought in go away without risking multi level collapse and the dominoes falling in a less than predictable manner. The trolls know he needs their cooperation and most of them have done their best to be uncooperative, but time is showing Obama's slow hand approach works pretty well as they start to fall in step for fear of being left out of an obviously viable plan to pull our collective asses out of the fire. Politicians are all about looking good, in the end. I love watching this Right Wing BS as it falls apart like moldy cheese.
Patience and hard work. Very rewarding indeed.

One way or another, he was going to self-destruct and take as many people as he could anyway, so in a sad attempt to expedite matters, our government screwed the pooch in a hard, bad way. This does NOT make the sick creep some sort of cultural hero and the attempt to make him appear that way just to scrape up another conspiracy theory is pretty sick. He got his own daughters pregnant, folks. Get a grip. If you don't believe that's so, find a book written by survivors other than the ones paid to give quotes to conspiracy authors.

Time slot is set for the demographic the show is aimed at, right?
Fox News is aimed to be on when "Joe" gets up or gets home from plumbing, driving combines, fixing Chevy's and attending Klan meetings.
Being as this demographic watches ONLY Fox News and no other stations, the number is boosted, because normal people watch a variety of news sources, not only when they have an opportunity to watch TV, but also on the web, making it a nearly impossible number of people to tally who DON'T watch Fox in droves, because they don't watch at the same time or the same show. Who knows, maybe even tuning into PBS or "Raymond" reruns.
So sorry to burst your little Fox bubble, but the numbers you suggest only mean the most readily available opportunity and timeslot available to the demographic that actually watches Fox is being used well by the loyal demographic who watches while assumedly polishing their guns and talking in hushed tones about what they'd like to do to that "Nigger President".
Oh, don't think we haven't heard that shit. We know what all this crap really boils down to. RACISM. You forget some of you are our relatives, much to ur chagrin. Check your numbers again and see if Fox's viewer-ship isn't 99.9% caucasian or people who think they are.
And Rupert and crew know it.
They love how greedily you folks lap up every hate filled sentence and carry it like the wind does the reek of an open sewer. They count on your addiction to that slow cooked, down home flavor of race hatred and fear, steeped for generations in the heart of our country, carefully hidden until it can be served up in a new, talky-box format with a big ol' American flag, so you can pretend talking about violent overthrow of a duly elected government and hinted rumors of Presidential assassination is somehow patriotic instead of sick, unpatriotic and un-American. And Disgustingly disloyal to the country you claim to love so much and the other Americans who live in it with you.
You may as well join the Taliban.
May I suggest if Fox and you want to overthrow the government, then put down the flag and GIT OUT, fuckers! You LOSE the right to call yourself an American when you talk treason for no good reason other than heresy, manufactured, bias propaganda and racist conjecture. "Y'all" seem to think we're afraid of your violent tendencies. Your wrong. Personally speaking, I'll fight you tooth and nail before I let my children live in a country you want to turn into a Right Wing, fascist, racist, Nazi-esque nightmare, day-camp wannabe doomed Roman Empire for caucasians only and the people who serve them.
Tooth and nail, to the last man.
HAVE A NICE DAY!

Koresh could have been arrested any week as he shopped in town every week. The event was stagged as 25 children were BURNED alive using illegal gas according to the Geneva convention.
The Koresh group made their income as a fire arms dealer at sports shows, they never broke any laws.
