Religious Right Group Claims Same Sex Marriage Leads to Mass Murder

By David Corn, Mother Jones. Posted April 10, 2009.

Recent acts of gun violence, they claim, are the poisoned fruit of the push for gay marriage.

Is there a connection between same-sex marriage and mass murder?

That's what one religious right outfit is suggesting. This week, Morality in Media disseminated a statement noting that the Iowa Supreme Court had legalized gay marriage on the same day that a gunman murdered 13 people in Binghamton, New York. The headline on the release: "Connecting the Dots: The Line Between Gay Marriage and Mass Murders." The group's president, Bob Peters, notes that the "underlying problem is that increasingly we live in a 'post-Christian' society, where Judeo-Christian faith and values have less and less influence." And, he continues, this "secular value system is also reflected in the 'sexual revolution,' which is the driving force behind the push for 'gay marriage.'"

Here's the punch line:

It most certainly is not my intention to blame the epidemic of mass murders on the gay rights movement! It is my intention to point out that the success of the sexual revolution is inversely proportional to the decline in morality; and it is the decline of morality (and the faith that so often under girds it) that is the underlying cause of our modern day epidemic of mass murders.

That is, he's not saying that gay rights activists are directly responsible for the murderous actions of gun-toting madmen. But Peters maintains that those who champion gay rights are undermining the moral fiber of society and that this assault on traditional values creates an environment in which killing sprees can more easily occur. These acts of gun violence, he insists, are the poisoned fruit of the push for gay marriage.

Talk about exploiting tragedy to advance an agenda. It might be tempting to dismiss Peters and Morality in Media as marginal, but this group did receive federal funding from 2005 through 2007. The money supported a Morality in Media project, ObscenityCrimes.org, which paid two retired law enforcement officers to review citizen complaints about obscenity on the Internet and to forward the best leads to the US Justice Department for possible prosecution. A total of $300,000 was provided to Morality in Media through two earmarks Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) placed into spending bills, according to Peters. And a portion of that money went to cover Peters' salary. As The New York Times reported in 2007, no obscenity prosecutions had resulted from the Morality in Media's obscenity-tracking work.

Peters tells me that since 2007 -- thanks to the fuss about earmarks -- he has received no more funds from the US government. After the earmarked grants ran out in 2007, he did apply directly to the Justice Department and was turned down. Since then, he has raised private funds to keep ObscenityCrimes.org going. That may be for the best -- particularly for Morality in Media. Peters has recently attacked President Barack Obama's pick for deputy attorney general, David Ogden, as an "ACLU-minded" sort who would "likely weaken" government efforts "to curb sexual trafficking and sexual exploitation of children." It would be difficult -- or, at least, awkward -- for Peters to blast a Justice Department that was funding his own work.

In his statement on gay marriage and mass murder, Peters notes that Christianity and Judaism teach "that we are to love our neighbors as ourselves and to forgive others." But on the subject of gay marriage, he does seem to have a rather unforgiving approach.

Seriously the only answer to this kind of insanity is laughter and custard pying the idiots who spout it. There can be no rational debate or discussion with someone who quite blatantly has so little grasp on reality as to come up with garbage like this.

If they had spent a while--say, 1 or 2 seconds--thinking about this they'd realize that the least religious, most socially liberal countries on earth have low murder rates, while the pious US of A has the highest of all developed countries.

And maybe it would have occurred to them that the ready availability of military-type firearms just might have something to do with it.

But then if they could think clearly they wouldn't be fundamentalists.

This is truly insane, is this a serious group or some fringe like the Phelps?

Btw is the education of sociology non-existent in USA?
Because even the most basic education in sociology would make these kinds of thoughts impossible to emerge...

A bit of history, please

There have always been mass murders. There was a time when they were often called "war" or "conquest" - they could think about the sack of Jerusalem or Constantinople if they need examples - but throughout history people have feared violent death at rates far greater than we need to fear it now in the developed world, even in the U.S. with its higher murder rates. So to say that mass murders need to be blamed on something in particular is to misunderstand history.

I'd love to see a comparison between the rise of gay rights in most liberal countries in the world - especially the ones that have already legalized gay marriage for the last several years - and the murder/mass murder rates in those countries. It seems to me Canada hasn't seen an increase. In fact our rates have always been pretty low on that front.

Of course, I don't believe that morality underpins actions to begin with. I think it's the other way around - people decide how they want to act and use their morality to justify it, and they backform when they're explaining it. But their beliefs about morality influence very few of their actions compared to the habits of behaviour they formed.

FOLKS...
Posted by: jvaljon1 on Apr 10, 2009 4:41 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
...There are only TWO (2) issues right now on the domestic front:

ONE (1) is, The Economy...and

TWO (2) is, Universal Health Care.

What gays do or don't do--whether they marry or not--is only one of the numerous distractions put up to take our minds off of the main game (see above).

I for one, don't care if gays cornhole each other daily with rusty meathooks, and then go preach from the pulpit all the Republican Thou Shalt Nots, the filthy hypocrites (Republican Gays Only, here).

We pay the least little attention to crap like this, and we will lose our whole domestic agenda, like we've done for the past 8 years.

Here: if the (Ir-)Religious Right brays--close your ears and loudly DEMAND UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE. Since Socialism is fine when Big Banks benefit, it's more than OK for the rest of us.

If the (Ir-) Religious Right brays some more--close your ears again and loudly DEMAND THAT AIG (aka American Institute of Greed) give back our bailout money.

Once THAT'S accomplished--then we can turn our attention to other things (NO, NOT GAY MARRIAGE)!

Things like: Obama said that he'd end that farce in Iraq in 16 months. He said that, on the stump.

He did NOT say: we're gonna replace Iraq with that Graveyard Of Empires known as Afghanistan. On the spurious Bush grounds that "they harbored (GASP!) Al Quaeda".

Not when Saudi Arabia, who COMMITTED 9/11--is still walking around, fat and free after their murder of some 3,000 of our citizens on 9/11.

The Saudis must be still marveling at how STUPID we are. Osama bin Laden "ran to escape in Afghanistan"? Why? He was a hero to all the Saudi citizens--in fact, that's why the Saudis (reluctantly, I'm sure) ordered the hit on the Twin Towers; the average Saudi citizen hated that its rulers were always making nice to The Great Satan (that's how they think of us, folks).

And when you think about it--think of Dubai Ports World, upcoming then in Saudi plans, as the 99-year-old Brit control of the world's ports was coming to an end, and the Saudi oilfields were (and are) winding down.

How to obtain that fountain of riches (control and administration of the world's ports)??

Why--have their best bud and family friend George W. Bush, run for President. And how to make sure that he "won" the "Election" in 2000?

Well--Walden O'Dell, Republican who supplied the crooked voting machines (Sequoia, ES & S) that screwed up Florida, takes a bow for that one. And, right on the heels of that--came 9/11. And George W, lying as usual, fingering the Iraqis for that one, instead of his Saudi family friends.

But the Saudis miscalculated. The world-famous American ignorance of world affairs--highly prized and cultivated by the American People themselves--grew thin for a while right after 9/11. Thus when (then) Saudi King Fahd (now deceased) offered a 10-million-dollar check to New York City after their hit on our land, then-NY Mayor Rudy Giuliani all but threw it back in his face, the Saudis were a tad worried; if our Mayor knew who did 9/ll--how then was George W. Bush, still struggling with the Florida recount, ever going to keep the peace, Saudi-wise, with the American people?

Not to worry. But even the Saudis were scratching their heads, when Bush Jr. stepped onto a pile of rubble which had once been one of the Twin Towers, and declared WAR--not on them, but on their deadliest of enemies, IRAQ!

We thought (with the election of Barack Obama last year), that it was all over. All the lies and schemes from the White House. That our enemies who committed 9/11 would finally meet our justice.

Ah well... now, the Domestic Agenda is getting full play...'bout time, too.

On right wing blogs and even on MSN's home page where there is discussion of articles and 99% of the comments are from right wing crazies, there is room for others to join in the discussion. Maybe some rumors should be started. Maybe we should tell the world that Glen Beck and David Duke are gay lovers with a plot to steal the guns of good loyal redneck Repbulicans and we know it's true because Michelle Bochman and Sean Hannity say it is. There has to be a way of fighting back in the policical arena that gets homophobs and other right wingers to fight each other instead of those they attack now.

If it weren't all so awful, it would be funny. Conservatives operate at sixteen to the dozen criticizing and mocking Rahm Emanuel's line "Never let a crisis go to waste"---then they take Current Events like a cop-shooting by a paranoid ne'er-do-well and the massacre of nursing home patients in their beds and claim it's all due to the private relationships of gay people. These tragedies aren't due to the easy availability of guns. They aren't due to the constant fomenting of rage and resentment by the right-wing media. They are due to Sam & Fred loving each other. I can't tell the difference any more between Saturday Night Live and reality.

The "gay" marriage thing
Posted by: sausage on Apr 10, 2009 7:29 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Y'know, folks, this "gay" marriage thing is just another in a long series of cons thought up by right wing think tanks and their foot soldiers in the marketing industry, carried out by disingenuous liars masquerading as prelates and self-serving politicians to keep us all off balance and distracted.

I figure that most of the right wing dimwits who are pushing this "defense of marriage" bullshit are being funded by the very same Wall Street clowns who are robbing us blind in these bank bailouts. I mean, have you ever noticed that not one of the j'mokes who fronts these anti-gay marriage gangs has a "real" job? That includes whack job Fred Phelps who fancies himself some kind of "primitive" Baptist preacher. These are guys who'll do anything for money except work!

I mean, really now, who in his right mind cares if Bob marries Carol or Ted marries Alice; or if Carol marries Alice and Bob married Ted! Hell, I'm a democratic-socialist and I don't care. And I'd sure as hell think that the Ayn Rand-cult crowd shouldn't care.

And, in a supposedly cash strapped state like mine, Iowa, which is always looking to attract tourists, selling "gay" marriage-licenses should be seen as a boon to the local economy.

Bottom line, we should stop taking these clowns seriously, because taking their bullshit seriously only legitimizes it. Toward that end I've come up with a couple of zingers to that just might shut these these idiots up:
"Wha'? My *ss lookin' better to you than yer ol'lady's?"
"Wha'? You mean you want to save gays from having the "fun" of divorce court? Gee, and all this time I though you guys were *ricks?"

I hope you all can add to the list.

"We Are Now a Post-Christian Society"
Posted by: Lilly on Apr 10, 2009 7:34 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
So, being a post-Christian society makes for mass murder? Hmmm. Not sure when this "post-Christian society" began, but I think it was in the 12th Century when the Catholic Church, leading troops against the Cathars, gave orders to just go ahead and kill everyone in the French town of Beziers, explaining that when all the dead people arrived in heaven, God would sort them out and decide who was good and who was bad. Then there were the Huguenots (French Protestants), who got the hell out of France when (again at the behest of a Catholic government) they were being slaughtered in the streets because they were Protestant---that was around 1580; in the words of one account, "the streets ran with blood". With this history of mass murder and grisly gore, I shouldn't think that present-day Christians would be bothered by a little gay smooching---much less, say that acceptance of gay marriage is due to the absence of wholesome Christian influence.

I thought mass murders were created by the Post Office.

Maybe the 'mass murder vibe' comes from the endless supply of violence we expose our selves to on a daily basis. Violence is in every program on TV. A big part of most motion pictures and even commericals.

Canada seems to be much less violent than we are here in the states, maybe it's because they don't waste a lot of programming time with violent content.

Who know's? I never thought of pulling someone's spinal column out until I saw it done in a video game. If a kid lives in a 'keep up with the Jones' kind of house, they've had evey edition of video game that ever came out and the majority are 'shooter games'.

So your little bundle of joy has 'shot' something hundreds of thousands of times by the time they leave home to live on their own.

I think if you're looking for something to blame for creating the killers in society they'd better start looking at the system's pro-war attitudes, violent content news and media and Nintendo not at folks who finally found someone they could face this madhouse society's created who just happens to be the same sex.

But then again, that was some church's idea. They've never got it right.

This guy has really got a way with words, bright fella. I like the literal conclusion more, but I don't think that has any more scientific evidence than what he apparently meant to express. I don't think sex between consenting adults has anything to do with morality, no connection.

everything bad that happens to our society and nature, can be attributed to gays. It seems that every time a shocking event occurs [ calif. fires ,mass murder, tornadoes, whatever] the fundamentalists/cults puts the blame on something or someone that does not fit in with their bullshit tenets. Last year, a local mennonite group, where i live in calif., blamed gay marriage on the forest fires. really, the wife of the mennonite priest said this to my wife. This year, the gay community must be holding seminars on how to murder as many people as possible in one fell swoop.

Wanna know what leads to mass murder? It's simple, really. Find yourself a superficial, drunken slob who claims to be reformed due to "divine intervention". A former governor would be best, especially if he's from a state with a lot of mouth breathers. Put him up for President. Make sure the "election" is rigged in his favor, and bribe the "supreme" court as a backup. Get the chump "elected", and don't worry about voters yelling "foul"! They're lazy, dim-witted, and gutless and won't be a problem. Next, use a false flag event as a pretext to enrich yourself and your crooked friends beyond your wildest dreams via a phony war or two, aimed at stealing some oil, and intimidating those who heretofore posed absolutely no threat to us. As with the phony election, don't worry about the American people. They've got their heads up their asses with patriotic fervor, and are asleep at the wheel. Viola! Mass murder, and you got away with it, too.

That is what you call it when a group of people who condemn others based on race, beliefs, or sexual persuasion are *somehow* the bearers of our societal morality. They have no morals. Christianity has policies (extremely exclusionary policies). They don't have morals. Christ was pretty much the last moral Christian and what did he say regarding the treatment of others? Did he say ban gay marriage? Did he say beat up gay people? Uhhhh... no. He said love god and love your neighbor.

Stupid ignoramuses deserve ridicule not respect. We cannot continue to allow folks who have no idea what morality is to decide what OUR morality should be.

If they are trying to connect the dots by drawing a line between Gay Marriage and Mass Murder, they are kidding themselves. First, you have to go through the Homophobia dot on the way to Murder. And you can take that to the bank: The real connecting line is between homophobia and mass murder.

Take, for example, the redneck Christian murderer who walked into the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Tennessee, and opened fire on the entire congregation. He was unrepentently open about his reason: They support Gays and Gay Marriage.

Christians smile with smug satisfaction at the horror of the humanists. "It's the work of God's Warriors," the Christians say to one another. As if murderers were heroes; and as if God had something to do with it.

I think it was God who said, "Thou shalt not kill."

AlterNet has provided me with a great service. There are several gay couples living in my building. I never realized that their presence puts me in such danger of losing it. 1) Any minute now, my 57-year marriage is going to dissolve; my husband will start running after prostitutes and I will become a drunkard. 2) And at just about the same time, we will become mass murderers. Not clear yet whether we will mow down everybody on the bus, or take out everybody in the supermarket; this is a work in progress. But thanks so much for the warning. I will now be alert to any signs of turning into Wolf Man. My God, those gays are powerful. Must be some kind of magic.

Turning the screws....

The Jehovah Witnesses espouse a similar mantra, namely that certain video games are responsible for various crimes of one sort or another. Both religions ignore all that has taken place either before video games or before gay marriage was legalised.

Bob Peters, president of Morality in Media notes that the "underlying problem is that increasingly we live in a 'post-Christian' society, where Judeo-Christian faith and values have less and less influence.

Well, let’s examine this little snippet of wisdom.

In the Hollywood image of the idealised American family, couples do not have sex before they marry, and then when they are married sleep in separate beds. If there are children in the family, then it can only be assumed that at some stage, sex did take place, unless of course they were delivered by the stork.

Regardless of how films may or may not portray sex, the American psyche cannot separate itself from the myth that Man was created out of the dirt by an all loving all powerful God who nevertheless, in spite of his rare genius, found it necessary to put the brakes on unfettered sexual activity.

What must the guy have been thinking of? For Christ sake, man and women are endowed with powerful sex drives that somehow managed to take God by surprise, as if it was something he didn’t expect, and thus he was suddenly at pains to do something about it.

If God was so damned concerned about Man’s sex drive, why didn’t he simply mirror the sex drive in the rest of the animal kingdom who presumably only mate by reasons of progeny.

But no! In our case, he made it pleasurable, pastime to bask in that didn’t necessarily involve having kids. Though in the days of Adam and Eve, there was hardly any necessity to control population growth.

Bottom line, there is one huge, almighty guilt trip where sex is concerned. So, can’t have married couples actually be seen sleeping in a double bed cos that might suggest they have sex, and we can’t have the children thinking such awful things about their parents can we? {I am of course referring to the Hollywood classics, the industry has since lightened up a little.)

Of course sex is acknowledged to exist, but only within the confines of National Lampoon’s Animal House where only sluts get fucked by horny men who are only doing it for a bet.

The film industry forges the moral code of society, and we rarely if ever see images that don’t meld with this code. Pornography is still pornography if you see what I mean, and infidelity is still treated as morally offensive. Strange therefore that once upon a time in the society inhabited by Plato and Socrates, male children were introduced to sex by male adults as a pleasurable venture.

Thus morals do and can change. The church, alas, is stuck with a way of thinking that it cannot possibly break away from unless it is also prepared to abandon belief in God almost. That belief in God carries with it a very high price which is, not only must we believe in a God, we must also adhere strictly to every God damned principle foisted upon us, which at its heart says – you are not allowed to enjoy yourself unless it is in a strictly controlled environment.

This has been the way it’s been for thousands of years. No wonder then that the church is so keen to put the blame on something as modern as gay marriage.

As the former editor / publisher of a "pro-life, pro-family" newspaper for 15 years, I can say that it is just this sort of fear-inspired crap that made me happy to sell the paper and walk away from right-wing politics as well as the monster-god and his misogynistic "word" upon which the Christian right stands.

One actual fruit of gay marriage...

Massachusetts, the first state to legalize gay marriage, now has a bill on the floor of its legislature that will allow transgendered people who are biologically male to use the Ladies room.

Technically speaking, this isn't a "consequence" of gay marriage, but it does arise from the same basic set of concerns and gender philosophy.

I'm curious...are we OK with this? With the possibility that people with severe mental problems, who consider themselves transgendered but have many other issues, might be allowed into a space where women are vulnerable to attack?

Just curious.

On the phony heterosexual marriage....

Watch ‘American Beauty’ starring Kevin Spacey. His marriage is in deep shit. In the opening scene, he’s jerking off in his early morning shower, ‘the highlight of his day’.

Some new neighbours move in, a retired Colonel and his wife and their teenage son. Selection of the entire cast was absolutely brilliant, none more so than the actor they chose to play the colonel, a man certainly on the outside, but look a bit closer, and you can plainly see his inner child totally and utterly dominating his every waking and sleeping moment, a man terrified that his son is a faggot, a homosexual, a gay.

The boy of course is none of these, quite the reverse. He has the hots for Kevin’s daughter and spends much of his time videoing her from his bedroom window. At first, she doesn’t like it, but eventually she’s there standing at her bedroom window and removing her clothes for him.

The boy also befriends Kevin, and at one point, he visits Kevin’s garage where they smoke a joint. They are just sitting there, but the boy’s father can see into the garage, and he mistakenly believes his son is actually giving the neighbour a blow job.

Time passes. The Colonel is now convinced that his son is gay, so when his son returns to his room, beats the crap out of him, and tells him to leave and never return.

So now it is the Colonel’s turn. He visits Kevin, and how desperately does he want to pour his heart now that he knows that Kevin is gay. They put their arms around each other and now the Colonel wants more than just sympathy, he wants hardcore sex, and oh dear, he has made a big mistake, cos Kevin’s not like that.

Thus, the colonel walks away with this tail between his legs.

A little later on, he puts a bullet through the back of Kevin’s head.

The film is clever because we are momentarily left to believe that it is Kevin’s wife who has shot her husband. But no, the colonel’s tee shirt is covered with blood, so you know it was him who did it

The colonel has a fine display of firearms in his cabinet. Had Kevin in fact been gay, he would still be alive, and the colonel would have finally discovered happiness, someone he could relate to, someone he could actually have a meaningful relationship with.

The colonel’s actual marriage was dead. It was just an illusion, as was Kevin’s marriage.

But the guns are real.

The article is entitled: Religious Group Claims Same Sex Marriage Leads to Mass Murder.

Suppose the title said: ‘Phony heterosexual marriage leads to mass murder’

True or false. George W Bush is in a heterosexual marriage, and that has definitely led to mass murder, genocide in fact.

Ex president George HW Bush is in a heterosexual marriage, and that has definitely led to mass murder. So is Tony Blair, married to a woman and a Roman Catholic. Their names are written on the bombs they dropped in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Whatever the truth of the matter, one thing’s for sure. If you have a gun in your house, then murder or the killing of animals – deer, grouse, pheasant – will and does take place, all the time.

Let me ask this question – taking all the members of Congress and the Senate and the Supreme Court, did any of them marry their partners for reasons of lust, sex, passion, always got a hard on (or whatever the female equivalent is – wet pussy?) whenever they were with their partners?

Or is it all for show? Is it possible that every single member of these institutions are in fact all closet homosexuals, and is the reason why they eventually legalised homosexuality?

I have been on foxnewsblogs for a while and am starting to make a dent. with persistence you can figure 90 percent of the word progressions the filter doesn't like. A stubborn fellow, and I am one, can wear out the crazies with ceaseless applications of logic. I have been increasingly able to bring a blog to a screeching halt for a time or stopped at 1AM to resume it's crazyness at 7AM or so. Things the foxnews filter doesn't like are: any word containing or THE word ... die, so soldiers doesn't work unless you space the word so l d i e r s, sometimes.if all else fails, s o. l d i e r s.

One I found yesterday cum, think circ u m s tance. another is a s s and most profanity.
b a s. t a r d . a s s i gn ... etc. Start with short posts of excellent crafting. As you figure it out you can go longer. sometimes you have to put spaces in lots of words, but ALL will have to do it once in a while. It's fun to pound incessantly 'till they just give up and go away. Change your name sometimes and use a fake email. There are some truly nasty people in there who are also persistent, just keep at em. Pound them with logic. Use google to check stuff they say and to back up your stuff. If they give a link check it out and THEN offer comment. kill is another ... s k i l l. Look at other posts to see what THEY had to parse to pass. they like to insult. I must insult occasionally, too, but even-handed rebuttal is best. It's fun, though, to beard them in their own den. Give it a try. Peace to all who resist the madmen/women.

lie is another one, though I think liar is ok.

USA's violent culture is worsened by religious fascists

There's not a shred of statistical evidence that gay sexual orientation is linked to criminal violence -- but statistics DO show more spousal abuse among heterosexual couples than among gay couples, interestingly.

No matter anyone's sexual orientation, America has always been been a violent society, largely because the culutre evolved to worship guns, egoistic-individuality, ruthless materialsim, patriotism-as-militarism, strutting male machismo, and brutal mass entertainment.

Religious fascists who want to legally repress victimless sexual activity among consenting adults in the name of the made-up rules of some made-up God, only add to mass America's unhealthy mental state. It is a state which is simultaneously crudely pornographic and Calvinistically repressed.

In the more civilized, mentally-healthy countries of W. Europe, there is altogether less violence of all kinds -- no matter who's sleeping with whom.
And priests and ministers, there, who babble the kind of scapegoating psychopathology our rightwing fundamentalists do here, are either quickly laughed off the public stage or coaxed into mental health clinics for therapy.

All was well... up until them thar gays got all uppity. And now it's all going haywire, thanks to them gay marriages!"

DEMOCRAT: Traditional Values “over”

APRIL 13.2009…..during an interview DEMOCRAT Senator Chuck Schumer declared that the days of those pesky ‘traditional values’ are finally over. This is from the same DEMOCRAT guy who declared that the American people ‘don’t care’ about wasteful pork spending….

CRAWFISH NOTE: Well, thanks to you and your secular socialist democrat Party traditional values are under assault daily.
I guess a country should abandon marriage, church attendance, honesty, integrity, prayer and attempting to follow the Ten Commandments, right Chuckie?
So what have the democrats been pushing to replace these awful guidelines?
If you guessed having no shame, having no respect, fornication, shack-ups, divorce, serial profanity, trashing churches, clergy, prayer and the family unit….that would be the democrat way.

Look at where we are now following the preferred democrat plan since the birth of secularism in the 1960s.
I say morals matter and character counts. What do you think is at the core of so many modern problems? Its morals, you dufus.

Right-Wing Evangelicals Are Greasing the Slippery Slope
Posted by: PoetWarrior on Apr 15, 2009 8:54 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
These right-wing, homophobic Christians (as opposed to liberal, tolerant Christians who also exist) are so busy greasing up their slippery slope argument that they refuse to see reality. They think that not one Christian (or, should I say "real" Christian) voted against Prop 8 when the truth is that a good number of left-leaning Christ followers did just that.

The Right-Wing Evangelicals have their head stuck in one chapter and verse of Leviticus and can't see the historical context of any of these laws of Moses. How many Christians refuse to eat ham at Easter and Christmas? How many Christian women isolate themselves from the family home during their periods? Why do they cherry pick which laws are followed based on their own level of comfort?

I always have to bring up this particular "chapter and verse" during this debate:

" 49'Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen'" (Ezekial 16:49-50)

There are many things "detestable" mentioned in the Bible, only one of which was the practice of violating the men, women and children of a conquered nation through the act of sodomy. It had nothing to do with homosexuality but was an act of war. In fact, the concept of "Gay love" was pretty much unknown until 1290 when English Common Law cited homosexuality as a punishable offense.

I'm so tired of these conservative Christian folks hiding behind the Bible when they want to justify their bigotry! If Jesus was walking on this earth now, he would be socializing with GLBT folks and telling Focus on the Family that they're going to Hell. How do I know this? Well, there's actually a Biblical precedent in the way he dealt with the religious bigots of his day.
