Obama Loosens Up on Leno

The president handled his guest appearance on Leno with his usual charm. But we want to know more about why Geithner inspires his confidence.

Oh, it's wonderful when conservatives and their media begin to tsk-tsk over what's "appropriate" behavior for President Obama. "He flies off to Los Angeles tonight to appear on the Jay Leno show," Senator John Kyl sniffed, as if Obama were running off to drown his troubles at the local bar. "He even has time to fill out his NCAA basketball bracket," Senator Lamar Alexander complained, making me wonder, Would they disapprove if they found out that on occasion Obama takes a 20-minute bath instead of a five-minute shower?

But no one does pretend puritanical as well as the New York Post, whose post-Tonight Show front page is headlined: "No Joke! O yuks it up on Leno as economy burns."

To assert that the president of United States shouldn't talk directly to the people in times of crisis is positively dippy. Not only do the tsk-tskers want him to look derelict in his duty, they want him surrounded and at bay, like Manuel Noriega: Ideally they'd keep Obama caged in the Beltway bubble, where they can torture him by blasting at high decibels the sound of their own voices, and no others, 'round the clock.

But foiled again! Obama handled the Tonight Show (video below) with his usual aplomb, both the small talk (and, really, the notion that Obama's a brute for his Special Olympics remark is laughable) and the serious stuff about AIG and the economy. Every time he broke into a smile, you could feel tiny knots of national tension being loosened. And he did it in the crooning quiet of Leno's Burbank studio, bouncing his thoughts off the Chin as if he were a stand-in (stand-up?) for the typical Main Street guy.

The scene got a little tense, and some of the applause died down, when Leno asked how fair is it to use the tax code to target special groups, as arguably the House did yesterday to the AIG bonus babies. I thought Obama should have clarified two things: One, does he still approve of this tax strategy, as he said yesterday, or is he concerned about its constitutionality, as he said when a narrower version of it was first proposed?

And two, he might have clarified Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner's role in watering down Senator Christopher Dodd's provision to cap executive bonuses in the budget bill. Granted, Leno wasn't the place to go into detail, but I've listened, I've read, and I still don't get the who, what, where, when, why. Obama seemed anxious instead to defend Geithner as a hardworking public servant in whom he has "complete confidence."

Now outta L.A. and back in the Bubbledome, will Obama tell us exactly why Geithner inspires such confidence?

However, just as the Norman-English aristocracy learned to stop murdering their relatives and use law to consolidate and increase their wealth, today's plutocrats can learn to stop murdering us (health insurance, lack of) and accept that we are all in this together. remarks on the Jay Leno, except in the way the right wing idiots try to make a mountain out of an ant hill. I recorded the show and watched it a few times. The remark they are trying to use against him was a joke he was making against himself, when he was receiving such applause and whistles from the audience over his voting score. He was just laughing at himself and said, come on, it wasn't the Special Olympics or something, as he had such a low score in the past that he was highly handicapped. Any bowler knows what that means. Those so eager to make the President and this entire country and all of us fail should be ashamed of themselves. We see right thru your dirty smear campaigns, even when you have to make up your faked outrage at an innocent and non-controversial joke he made about himself. Obama is a corportist and servant of Wall Street. Hopefully the economy will get much worse and he will be forced further left. Otherwise except a mediocre presidency because he surely doesn't care much about progressives.

Quit Campaining Obama !

Even Alex Bennett of America Left on Sieris radio says Obama's appearance on Leno will diminish the office of the President. Obama has won the office. Now it is time to stop the stump speeches and do SOMETHING.

He is signing and implementing legislation without reading it! Or when the facts come out, Obama claims that he and the Democrats did not know the incredible spending, pork and AIG bonuses where in these crazy bills.
The Obama administration is blaming AIG for the bonus's that they themselves wrote into the bill that I guess they did not read........ Come on! They are using the financial crisis crisis crisis crisis crisis (they say that word a lot) to push programs and legislation that have nothing to do with stimulating the economy.

Obama is the train wreck I predicted he would be.

THE 12 YR’s OLD HAVE GOTTEN AHOLD OF THE CHECKBOOK!

The Special Olympics remark was stupid and cruel. It is an example of what happens when Obama does not have his telepromter. Obama is so brain weak that he can't even introduce a member of his cabinet without a telepromter!

Obama makes is look so easy. As though he can sit and chat about anything, which he can. But the whole world is watching and waiting for him to screw up. I don't think he did. He's pleasant, has a sense of humor and was a great guest. But if he never did it again, I'd understand. ANNA

Just like his private put-down of middle Americans ("clinging to guns and religion") Obama's breathtaking insult of the disabled is just more evidence that this guy's talk of "inclusiveness" and "change" is a line of shit.

He's an arrogant polititian with a tin ear.

The world according to Leslie Cagan and The Nation is Republicans=Boorishness and Democrats=Charm.

'The president handled his guest appearance on Leno with his usual charm.'

Well, it's true! Obama is not a drunken lout like Dubya, or a total A-Hole like Rummie, Rush, or Dick, but is this really all we need to settle for? Just be kind to us, Ruling Class? Don't shout and sneer at us? Is this it? Is that all? Is this really mainly what liberals really want... a more charming president? One definitely gets that impression from material like this.

You saw a President willing to appear on a show such as Jay Leon's, and pull it off with such ease and aplomb? All right; maybe his self-deprecating quip comparing his bowling skills to the Special Olympics was ill-considered, but its intent was obviously not mean spirited, and I can forgive him for that. Compare Obama to bush, and imagine the "decider" on Jay Leno's show. Dumbya comes off as a far distant second, in my view.

Ms. Cowan says "Every time he broke into a smile, you could feel tiny knots of national tension being loosened. And he did it in the crooning quiet of Leno's Burbank studio, bouncing his thoughts off the Chin as if he were a stand-in (stand-up?) for the typical Main Street guy."

You need to get a grip here. He shouldn't be in this office to make you feel all comfy. He's not a crooner, he's supposed to fix things. People are being laid off in record numbers while his staff is looting the Treasury. People are being killed by our arms industry all over the world. You may have some kind of crush on this guy, but he's supposed to be working his ass off and not constantly on some stage. He's not an actor. He's supposed to be the head of this ship not the featured performer on the cruise.

And leave the stand up comedy to comedians. His jokes almost always land with a thud. Remember his Hilary "you're like able enough" and how about his Nancy Reagan seance joke. Please, get the hook. Then sit his butt down in the oval office and read some Stiglitz or Galbraith if he can focus long enough.

Besides, if you all wanted a really serious president, you losers should have given 3rd parties a chance but you losers decided to settle for the lesser of the two evils so you brought this upon yourselves. Now leave Obama alone and mind your own business fighting for better leadership. Have you losers considered looking at your own local leadership? I'm guessing the answer is a resounding no.

The Shrub vacationed for an entire third of his pre-pres-, his tenure (can't bring myself to call it his "presidency"). Furthermore every single time he opened his mouth he either lied and/or said something inane, twisted or mocking. He was simply the most diabolically horrible person to ever occupy the oval office and those of us who fought for eight long tormented years to get him out of there might have thought twice about it had we known his plans to slash-n-burn the global economy on his way out the door!
Trolls, Rove-controlled pundits, obstructionist republiCON senators and right wing wackos can spin Obama's words and actions all they like- even make him (and all of us) fail if that's really what they so desire but they will never succeed in stripping him of his poise and integrity. Say what you will about him Barack Obama is genuine (and genuinely humorous) and it just KILLS conservatives because he ISN'T a socialist (if only!), and he ISN'T a "leftist" (if only!).
No, he' so much more like them then their racist paranoia will allow them to acknowledge...a corporate centrist.

SINCE OBAMA KNEW HE WAS GOING TO BE GRILLED, HE STEPPED OUT SO TO SPEAK AND SET THE PACE, BY CHANGING THE WHOLE SUBJECT, LIKE HE DID AT THE DEBATES= WHEN ASKED A QUESTION, HE CHANGED EACH QUESTION AND SAID WHAT HE WANTED TO. BEFORE BECOMING PRESIDENT HE WAS A SENATOR. THEN HE WAS PROFILED BY A WELL KNOWN DOCTOR, WHO DESCRIBED BARACK OBAMA AS A NARCISSIST. HE LOVES TO HEAR HIMSELF TALK AND WHEN HE SPEAKS, EVERYONE IS MEMORISED BY HIS SPEECHES, BUT HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED. HE ONLY TALKS==NO ACTION, JUST TALKS AS FAR AS OUR COUNTRY IS CONCERN, THATS WHY NOTHING, BUT LAY-OFFS HAVE OCCURRED. ONLY TALKS, NO ACTION. WHY HAS'NT HE TURNED OUR ECONOMY AROUND AND WHY IS HE CHANGING LAWS, BUT NOT TELLING OUR NATION, LIKE FEB.4/09 NEW LAW= BRINGING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PALESTINIAN REFUGES ONLY FOR HUMAS INTO AMERICA AND GIVE THEM OUR FORECLOSED HOMES, FOOD AND $20.3 MILLION, WHILE WE GET $600. AND THE ILLEGAL ALIENS GET $1800 A MONTH, WHILE AMERICANS ARE HOMELESS AND OUT OF WORK. WHY DOES'NT HE TURN OUR ECONOMY AROUND, INSTEAD OF TALKING ABOUT IT. NOW HE'S TRYING TO PASS A LAW TO REGISTER RIFLES AND SHOTGUNS AND AMMUNITION AND ALL GET FINGERPRINTED. ARE WE SURE HE'S OUR PRESIDENT. 2ND DAY IN OFFICE, HE SENT A COMMITTEE TO IRAQ AND AFGANISTAN, 3 DAYS LATER ALL MILITARY ADDRESSES AND SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS HIT THE BLACK MARKET IN BOTH COUNTRIES ONLY. IT WOULD COST LESS THAN $5 BILLION TO TURN THE ECONOMY AROUND AND ONCE THE COMPANIES STARTED SEEING A PROFIT IN STOCK, THEN THEY WOULD START RE-HIRING BACK EVERYONE. A MINOR QUESTION: WHEN IS PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA GOING TO TURN OUR AMERICAN ECONOMY AROUND?

Today's philosophical question: Does making bad jokes on Jay Leno's show diminish the Presidency more, or less, than having a male hooker lob softball questions to you at press conferences?

Bonus question: Will God forgive the neocons, or will they get reborn as lab animals, again and again and again?

It's amazing that Obama apologists criticize anyone who criticizes the president as a Republican troll, when it is very much the opposite. The Republicans are thrilled to have Obama as president. They get to tar and feather him as some sort of socialist, when he is in fact doing exactly the opposite -- socializing losses, while privatizing profits. They get to push the national discourse further to the right, even as Obama escalates the war in Afghanistan, betrays his pledges on Iraq withdrawal, and looks to "reform" entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security, while locking out single payer advocates including sitting Congressmen from his discussions on health care reform.

The privatization of Veterans Care was a trial balloon for what Obama has in store for the rest of the country. However, his defense of Geithner may very well be his undoing. When even people like Greenspan are arguing for more direct measures like nationalization to address the crisis, Geithner is still trying to help his Wall Street pals. Really stupid.

Read Taibbi in Rolling Stone, read Krugman's despair over Geithner's plan, read Lindorff's grim analysis, and read Green's angry lament.

I voted for Obama. But, when a president feels he HAS to be on TV every day to get his message across, something is very wrong.Who is he trying to convince?.This money give away began with Bush and Paulsen. It was a rip off of the middle class then, as it is now.People are just starting to wake up.The banks and AIG, ARE NOT TO BIG TO FAIL.They are trying to make us believe that if any of them go down, that the entire world as we know it will blow up. I dont believe it. Didnt believe it in Sep. either. I agree with another poster, that when you hear the word crisis---believe it--its NOT a crisis.Thats what they NEED us to believe to get their agenda passed.Dont be fooled.Anyway, i cant wait for the next multi-billion dollar bail out bill the pres. want passed gets to congress.Alot of congress is up for re-election soon. What do you think they want more?.To sigh a crap unpopular bill that everyone in their state hates, or side with the good hard working folks that brought them to the dance--not basketball.?.Good luck to all.

I'd expect this kind of behavior from the Republicans but when the Democrats do such things, this says something is seriously wrong with the party. At this point, neither the Democrats nor Republicans are the party of the people but the party of Wall $treet disguised as two ! Only two months and so far Obama's turning out to be a sick joke at worst and a window dresser at best.

Liberals who criticize Obama, his people, and his policies will have only themselves to thank if conservatives come back from the wilderness in 2012. Conservatives feel chronically persecuted, so they have moral justification for anything they do. I read townhall.com daily (and take notes): writers there do not scruple to lie, and posters there often sound nutty. But that website is better-organized than any liberal website I know. You can sign a petition, buy a book, join a club, or become part of an email blitz just by clicking. God knows conservatives' own vitriol is bad enough (just a sample from this morning's townhall includes "Acorn Brownshirts Attacking Citizens", "Obama is a Sociopath", and "Congress Got Huge Bonuses!"). They don't need liberals helping them. You think Obama is overexposed? You think he's taking on too much? You think Geithner was a mistake? Hold your tongue, unless you want Sarah Palin for the next round. Remember what side you're on.

When I saw the clips (I don't have teevee anymore... can't afford it) of the show, I thought, yup, nice guy, funny shit, then the special olympics gaffe and I felt gut punched, and I remembered why I couldn't vote or swoon over the Corporates last year.

Also reminded me of why I don't believe in kings, monarchies and celebrity worship. Dammit, I guess I'm an 'Merkaan afterall. I'm too god damned sick of rich fuckers taking everything then expectin' me to kiss their ass for screwin' me.

Obama is a corportist and servant of Wall Street. Hopefully the economy will get much worse and he will be forced further left. Otherwise except a mediocre presidency because he surely doesn't care much about progressives.

hope his secret service detail is fail-proof...

I wonder if she laughs.
Would you?
What does it reveal about character?

You saw a President willing to appear on a show such as Jay Leon's, and pull it off with such ease and aplomb? All right; maybe his self-deprecating quip comparing his bowling skills to the Special Olympics was ill-considered, but its intent was obviously not mean spirited, and I can forgive him for that. Compare Obama to bush, and imagine the "decider" on Jay Leno's show. Dumbya comes off as a far distant second, in my view.

Ick, How Did This Get in "The Nation"?

A THOUGHTFUL AMERICAN

Gee, this sounds like typical owning-class lust doesn't it? Does Leslie need a cigarette?

When I saw the clips (I don't have teevee anymore... can't afford it) of the show, I thought, yup, nice guy, funny shit, then the special olympics gaffe and I felt gut punched, and I remembered why I couldn't vote or swoon over the Corporates last year.

Also reminded me of why I don't believe in kings, monarchies and celebrity worship. Dammit, I guess I'm an 'Merkaan afterall. I'm too god damned sick of rich fuckers taking everything then expectin' me to kiss their ass for screwin' me.

Meanwhile, back in real life.... PEOPLE ARE LOSING THEIR SHIRTS! HEY, RICH GUYZ, YOU NEED TO GIVE A FUCK BEFORE YOU GET PUNCHED IN THE MOUTH!
