The Most Outrageous Media Comments of 2008

By Julie Millican, Media Matters for America. Posted December 11, 2008.

The list of offenses to women, minorities, gays and lesbians, immigrants, and others in 2008 is a long one, but here are some of the standouts.

With attacks on autistic children, the poor, and HIV-positive basketball star Magic Johnson, talking heads showed that nobody was safe in 2008, no matter how unfounded and unseemly the smear. Progressive politicians, particularly Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton and President-elect Barack Obama, were also targets. Obama was called everything from a "pussy" (Don Imus), to a "steamy crap sandwich" (Chris Krok). One commentator said Obama "fits the stereotype blacks once labeled as an Oreo -- a black on the outside, a white on the inside" (John McLaughlin), while others associated him with the Antichrist (Bill Cunningham, Chris Baker, Brian Sussman, others). Michelle Obama was also targeted, being described, among other things, as "Kim Jong-Il dressed up with a bit of Oprah Winfrey dressing" (Mark Steyn). MSNBC's Chris Matthews said Clinton's success is attributable not to her merit, but to the fact that "her husband messed around."

The list of offenses to women, minorities, gays and lesbians, immigrants, and others in 2008 is a long one, but here are some of the standouts:

CHRIS MATTHEWS

After vowing not to underestimate Clinton, Matthews asserted, "[T]he reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around": "Let's not forget -- and I'll be brutal -- the reason she's [Hillary Clinton] a U.S. senator, the reason she's a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around. That's how she got to be senator from New York. We keep forgetting it. She didn't win there on her merit. She won because everybody felt, 'My God, this woman stood up under humiliation,' right? That's what happened." (January 9)

MICHAEL SAVAGE

Savage claimed Lantos used the Holocaust as "a weapon the rest of his life": Following the death of Rep. Tom Lantos (D-CA), a native Hungarian who escaped from a Nazi slave-labor camp during World War II, Savage said: "You're not supposed to talk badly about the dead. I generally wouldn't do it. But in the case of Tom Lantos, I'll make an exception. I think he was one of the most -- he was a scoundrel. And I'll tell you why I detested Tom Lantos. The man survived the Holocaust of World War II and used it as a weapon the rest of his life." (February 11)

Savage: "The children's minds are being raped by the homosexual mafia": Responding to a caller who said, "I had to explain to my young son why these two men were holding hands the other day," Savage stated, "You've got to explain to the children why God told people this was wrong. You have to explain this to them in this time of mental rape that's going on. The children's minds are being raped by the homosexual mafia, that's my position. They're raping our children's minds." (June 16)

Savage on autism: "A fraud, a racket. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out": "Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism, since I'm not talking about autism? A fraud, a racket. You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.' Autism -- everybody has an illness. If I behaved like a fool, my father called me a fool. And he said to me, 'Don't behave like a fool.' The worst thing he said -- 'Don't behave like a fool. Don't be anybody's dummy. Don't sound like an idiot. Don't act like a girl. Don't cry.' That's what I was raised with. That's what you should raise your children with. Stop with the sensitivity training. You're turning your son into a girl, and you're turning your nation into a nation of losers and beaten men. That's why we have the politicians we have." (July 16)

But there is something about these bozos frothing at the mouth against their new president that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Quite the Litany of Ugly You've Scraped Up Off the Bottom

I just don't know where to start. Okay, let's start with the ugliest. When I read the Lee Rodgers comments about Sarah Palin, I was reminded for the umpteenth time of "White Hunter, Black Heart". John Huston never met Sarah, but the character that stood in for him absolutely nailed her to the killing floor. (Because of her world view) "You, madam, are the ugliest bitch I have ever had the misfortune to meet". She was such a nasty piece of work he didn't even wait until after he boned her before he told her that. That is exactly how ugly Sarah Palin is. Let's not forget G. Gordon Liddy, sad pathetic asshole that he was born to be. Younger, fresher comedians continue to beat him in the race to the bottom. No gratitude after he showed them the way. I'll leave off so others can talk about their least favorites.

Religious references offensive to people with common sense
Posted by: Moonray on Dec 12, 2008 1:06 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
References to imaginary gods by Michael Savage and many others are both offensive and amusing. Savage, for instance, excoriates a politician, but in doing so cites a magical Iron Age sky god whose existence is not supported by any evidence whatsoever. Similar references fill our media -- even though they make no sense. Consider the drunken clown on the evening news who rolled his pickup and escape with hardly a scratch. The first thing he's likely to say is, "The Lord was looking out for me," although one would suspect that a deity would have better things to do.

Isn't it odd that taxpayers are forced to subsize belief in gods that don't exist, and many other strange and harmful beliefs that accompany religious superstition, but there's never enough tax money for decent medical care or affordable housing? It's all very funny, and just more proof that those Planet of the Apes movies were in fact documentaries.

So?...

I thought the PC thing was on its way out.

Most of these are just chronic cases of hoof-in-mouth disease. And a few of them even have a spark of truth to them, for example, Imus' regarding Obama and the Clintons.

Savage's comment regarding welfare recipients brings up an interesting question: Should we allow those who have a financial stake in an election to vote? That would exclude most of the wealthy, anybody who contributes to any interest group, corporate executives, lawyers, etc...By his standard, the poor should probably be the only people allowed to vote, because they're pretty much screwed no matter who gets elected.

The case against white bread!
Posted by: chuckjs on Dec 12, 2008 3:12 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
This will probably get me banned but this is no worse than Glenn "The Toilet" Beck or Rush "To Your Fat Ass Smoking Death" Limbaugh. This is a biblical analogy of the ruination of this world through the process of whitening everything.

Have you ever noticed how WHITE bread is made. First they take BROWN wheat and they grind the shit out of it. Then they bleach it until it is your favorite WHITE color. This is simalar to brainwashing!

Now that it is white it no longer has any of it's natural healthy properties, as they have been removed by the processing. So they have to enrich it to give it back some of it's healthy properties. But in doing so they have to use unnatural processes and chemicals polluting the environment. Also it is now a man made proccess with man decided "healthy" additives. Doing this is known as the GOD complex in where man thinks he knows better than his own god, he worships too, what is good and what is bad. This is called programming your new brainwashed puppet!

So what you end up with is a piece of potentially semi healthy white bread, although the long term exposure to chemicals in the whitening process are still not know, that would have been more healthy had it been left to it's natural brown state. This leaves you with something that is now white, but wasn't to begin with. It was healthy initially but it was ruined by the process of turning it white. Then it was enriched with someone elses, man made, idea of what is good for you. You end up with something unnatural and controlled by someone else! Blind Faith will get you sickened by this as well as the imported Chinese crap. The results of brainwashing!

So tell me what exactly is wrong with naturally brown things anyway? Seems to me bleached white is the leach on the environment not the other way around.

Any of you wise white wingers have the facts about why bread was made white to begin with? Why take the good out of something in order to change it's color and then try to unnaturally reintroduce man made goodness(sic).

New contender for the most outragious statement of 2008:

Think about that for a moment or two:

The most corrupt president in the history of the republic finds the corrupt behavior of another politicaian "astounding".

I'd be laughing really hard right now - if those comments had been made in good fun! But the sad truth of this selection is: they really believe what they're saying.

Hope the audiences will wake up soon and stop listening to all those hate tunes.

The world's too nice a place to believe such biased falsities. I'm not saying that I'm unbiased, but I think there's a difference between a bias based on hate and fear and a bias founded on hope and the faith in goodness and reason ...

I fully anticipated another Top Ten List within this column. Sadly, we have far more than ten egregious examples of ignorance-fueled hatred. Obama can't change things alone. The rest of us can't stand for this garbage any longer. The only solution is to engage the people who listen to these programs in an intelligent discourse. Clearly, some won't go for it, but unless the listeners/viewers are challenged directly, there's no hope to take these a-holes down.

Chris Matthews' statement about HRC looks out of place here
Posted by: Auk on Dec 12, 2008 6:05 AM

Matthews is a Democrat and hardly in the same sordid league with the rest of these clowns. He said a few other things during the campaign that made many of us cringe, but this one was a mild statement of fact, "offensive" only to hard-core Clintonistas.

I'd even say his "explanation" of why Clinton unexpectedly won the New Hampshire primary -- he blithely said New Hampshire-ites are mostly racists, didn't he? -- might deserve to be on this list, but not this one.

Why did so many in the media people argue FOR torture and why didn't anyone write a who's who on that 'group think' position? Or did I just miss it? There is a report out today from our dear leaders.

Bipartisan Report: Rumsfeld Responsible for Detainee Abuse
Thursday 11 December 2008, by: Joby Warrick, The Washington Post

A bipartisan Senate report released today says that former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and other top Bush administration officials are directly responsible for abuses of detainees

The Senate Armed Services Committee report accuses Rumsfeld and his deputies of being the principal architects of the plan to use harsh interrogation techniques on captured fighters and terrorism suspects, rejecting the Bush administration's contention that the policies originated lower down the command chain.

The true genesis of the decision to use coercive techniques, the report said, was a memo signed by President Bush on Feb. 7, 2002, declaring that the Geneva Convention's standards for humane treatment did not apply to captured al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

Another Nomination
Posted by: Gravitas on Dec 12, 2008 7:08 AM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The comments listed in the article above are inexcusable. I would also like to add something of my own. The "left" circulated an e-mail petition about seceding from the red states. Among its list of "undesirable" red state features along with mosquitos was 90% of "obese people and their health care costs." Not only were the stats completely off, this is completely inexcusably rude and uncalled for. Did the fool who started it really believe there are no fat progressives who would read it? And who would be so insensitive as to forward it to a fat friend. Yet, unbelievable, someone had the nerve to forward it to me! And I hit "reply all" to tell them exactly what I thought of it!

I would like to say to anyone who makes callous antifat remarks, substitute any other group and see if it is acceptable. If it is not, don't say it. Better yet, substitute something about yourself and imagine the person you are talking to is saying that to you. For instance, when people talk to me about "ugly" fat, I substitute one of their features. Like ugly big noses or what have you. After years of trying to be kind, rational, and reasonable, sadly this is the ONLY tactic that seems to work! I may not win converts but people sure as heck watch what they say around me.

But I did find the quote by Obama listed in the Liddy gaffe to be a quite disturbing:

"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

Some analysts of the looming Depression have stated that martial law will be a necessary component of a country whose economy is in free fall collapse. Another article on Alternet today showed a man being evicted from his home with the help of the local police. The article stated that there had been over 700,000 incidences of foreclosure evictions in the last quarter. Over a million people were laid off from their jobs last month in a trend that is predicted to continue.

Connect the dots anyone?

These closed minded hypocrites, these are the same people that were so for the current "Incompetent Imperial One Bush"! If that isn't birds of a feather, these people aren't journalists, they are celebrities cashing in on very hateful rhetorical talking points that they have been given!

The sad part is that they have a following of hateful closed minded people! That they use "religion" to cast those stones, when they themselves have violated many of those same "moral issues" they point to is the height of the hypocrisy!

Look at the commnet in u-tube and relish the cooment of british bastards in BBC world service about the verdict of jury in poilce shooting of an innovcent brazalian in the london tube.
the bbc jopurnalists coomented that the only good thing that came out of this trail is there was no verdict of unlawful killing--deliberately forgetting to add that this is exactly what the kangaroo briitsh court judge had asked the jury not to give ,
In other words the BBC was celberating that kangaroo court had done misjustice and it was also pspewing all the lies that the police had said-though the jury had told that poilce was lying all through.
such is the BBc and that same oraganistaion dares fgo to other countries and start fighting for minotrities rights there just to act as sabeuteurs.

It is justifuiable to kill all tbe biritish journalists abraod because they are the terrotis and are the agent of enemy britian -such enemies msut be aliminated everywhere and by every country.
when the BBC bastards opbject then show thse hsameless bastrd the u-tube of their coverage of police state called britain.

also see this--

6th march,2007.

BBC comment(atleast her washingtons correspondent's comments) on scooter LibBy's gulity verdit on 6th march,2007--"it does not matter to white house as long as iraq war turns out to be all right"!! for BBc illegal occupation of iraq and killing of million civilians does not matter -it will be al r ight for american occupation. This is human rights and democracy ala BBc and british propaganda.
see and watch todays bbc and realize how much bbc and other british propaganda machinary is responsible for bush war crimes.
He also assuredly told that this "white house is quite safe"as wished for by the british ofocurse. during gore-bush florida tussle bbc was advocating gore to leave bush alone as britian was waiting for american missile defence to come her shore soon and so no delay in small matter of who should be presidentof usa be allowed.d-bit belicve it? look at all british propaganda between 1st novembr till 20th novembr of 2000.
it is high time that engish spies in american establishment be eliminated..

it is high time that these english spies in usa are taken care of .

also during and after the gulf war(first iraq war) the british were taking full creidit for insitagating bush 1 to start and persue war agasint iraq. the reason war criminal blair diidnto take full creidt for iraq war 2 was because that went sour(failure has no fathers claming thiers). itis a fact that merciless war done by america has benen perpetauted by the british agents inside america( and not some indepdnet israli agents as claimed-it jsut so happend that only know israli interest happend to coinside with those of english parasites -that is why war on and for behalf of england is being waged by america the world over.
By the way in IN '88 when Dalai lama, at the height of Tibetan disturbances, visited west, the then british prime minister refused to meet Him. Later on with the demise of Russia and usefulness of China gone and with manipulation to keep power in Hong Kong somehow intact, the same british media and government ,like dog, started barking at China. It is interesting that amnesty international selectively targets those very countries( as it did china after cold war) who are out of favour (because they would not be a british stooge) of the british media and govt. This is not surprising as amnesty international is the creation of british govt, and british media. england with the most appalling record of human rights in last 200 years of her evil rule, needed some organisation to keep the others from charging england off her past and current evil practices. In other words it went for aggressive posture in propaganda war so that others can be

While these examples from talk TV/Radio are all too typical of the vile drivel offered up to their conservative listeners, the rest of the media is just as vacant in terms of addressing the real issues in any substantive way. When they are not lying by ommission they are misrepresenting the facts or the priorities. Both are simply corporatist propaganda using different techniques to achieve the same goals, middleclass exploitation and the cover up of major related felony crimes from election thefts to mass murder. There is no Fourth Estate here and as a consequence there is no democracy.

Goddam, I am so glad I was born back in the day. Even though my mind was consumed with thoughts of pussy as early as eight years of age, and nobody had told me at the time anything concerning pussy one way or the other; it just happened all on its own, I am sure if the queers had gotten hold of me and infected my mind, I most certainly would have "turned" out gay.

Families smashed .. children abducted by the state .. children murdered before birth .. the Palestinian,Genocide .. this small sampling is just some of the fruits of the PC Brigade.

If anyone thinks that this PC movement is to protect the emotions of minorities against the mean minded majority then think again.

If one cannot speak ones mind then one may as well be dead and done with .. it seems like there are a lot of people who are dead and done with .. hup two three four Hup Hup .. odd numbers to the left and even numbers to the right .. move along there .. hup hup!

You have criminally offended by opening your mouth .. go to jail and of course many have and will continue to do so until this stupid repressive movement fades away.

But its not likely to because the real hate mongers with unlimited funds are subverting our political and legal institutions in the cause of Zionism and the Bankers NWO.

Everyone knows all these people {even Chris sometimes}are morons. This is nothing new. Believe me.But, most of them{morons}are not stupid. Not when it comes to money and a giant paycheck.Bottom line is this, if your listening to talk radio etc.,and its boring, your going to change the station.Since they are not very bright, and cant talk about anything important, small minds do what is easy for them."say stuff thats going to make people mad---and keep listening".Also, where is Ann Coulter?. She is a perfect example of what im talking about.Talk about BIG money from writting crap books.

Rush Limbaugh and "Obama's Scandal"

Tonight Friday 12-12 go to Rush Limbaugh's website to see how diligently he is trying to pin Blagojevich to Obama. In every line he associates the two, eg, "Obama's Scandal", "This is the cesspool Obama came out of", "Obama's lies" etc. I don't recall him mentioning that Blagojevich called Obama "That motherfucker who won't give me anything but appreciation---I WANT MONEY---fuck him!".

I want the Fairness Doctrine. I want a little bird placed on Limbaugh's shoulder that will debunk and counter every lie he utters.

Don't forget how the "progressive" blogs trotted out all the old anti-Clinton and anti-Hillary smears from the 90's during the primaries and turned their sites into orgies of misogyny. It was the gross-out of the year.

"Obama can't change things alone. The rest of us can't stand for this garbage any longer. The only solution is to engage the people who listen to these programs in an intelligent discourse. Clearly, some won't go for it, but unless the listeners/viewers are challenged directly, there's no hope to take these a-holes down."

The people who live and breathe what these hate-mongers dish out - cannot be argued with. They memorize the same talking points the Sean Hannity's and Rush's memorize - and just keep spouting them off. If you blow a hole in their talking point - they switch to a whole new one and keep going. It would be like arguing with Sarah Palin - the same confused junk just keeps pouring out. It is sort of fun, though, to keep pushing at it - you eventually see that "deer in the headlights" look come over their faces, when they get down to their last talking point - and all have been blown apart. That's usually when they storm off.

Coem on now, was Nancy eligible for the Senate? How about Betty? What about Pat?
How about even Roselyn?
Although I doubt the 'pity'is what granted her the seat...More like Clinton machine methods.
For the last 8 yrs Hillary has proven she is NOT a Democrat, and therefore couldn't make a decision that was not Purley in Her own best interest- typical Repug.
"Obliterate Iran" ??? Of all the appointmenet Obama has made this far, she is the most worrisome. Which number is she in line for the presidency? fourth? Does she still hold that RFK fantasy of hers....THREE TIMES becomes a request, not a inadvertent example. Please The clintons have proven themselves to be very crafty, that analogy was NO Mistake!
Both Clintons should take this as an opportunity to redeem themselves in the Democratic Party.Otherwise have enough balls to admit they've always been Republicans (who merely jumped ship inthe '80s). The recent economic meltdown and the legislation Bill signed which aided the Deregulators like Gramm, and of course the retention of Greenspan, certianly lend credibility to this reality
Nor is Chris Matthews a 'Sexist', just your garden variety male who says something before he exaims the full ramifications. But really I find the Hypercritism says more about the critic than Chris.
Ladies Equality means taking the Good with the Bad, so get a thicker skin, otherwise your whining just proves their accusations. Hillary had NOT 'Crossed the Threshold', that claim alone was a challenge worth disproving. and the Dem's did by handing her walking papers.
So being a Pres Wife does not equal the Presidency, nor does the amount of years in the Senate (McCain).
waht lost the Campaign was her Lack of quailfications, her votes while in the senate and her arrogant Neo Con campaign tactics.. It had nothing to do with her having a Vagina!

How about the USA commission the building of a ship we can christen Titanic II or Tit II. The cast of characters mentioned in this piece can then be offered free passage on an arctic cruise. Of course, George W. Bush would be given the helm and the departure would be ASAP so as to ensure a sufficient number of global warming survivor icebergs. Then...a bit of deja vu. The world would be so much better off following the report of Tit II's sinking with all hands lost.

If he wasn't making a living attacking homosexuals he could stand back and he see the damage he is doing to himself and his community. Greed is more vile than two consenting adults having relations. Hypocrisy is ugly, too, Mr. Savage.
