The Sweetness of the Smoking Gun

By Toby Barlow, Huffington Post. Posted March 3, 2006.

There's President Bush, on video for the world to see, offering hollow assurances that we were prepared for Hurricane Katrina.
bushlarge
Michael Brown, then the Federal Emergency Management Agency chief, told the president and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff that he feared there weren't enough disaster teams to help evacuees at the Superdome.

For the past six years, I've been worried that, despite the Bush administration's obvious incompetence, we would never be able to really bust them in the old-fashioned gotcha sense. And this culture needs the gotcha, we're addicted to the smoking gun theory. We just can't seem to reason this stuff out.

It's even worse now than it used to be; according to news reports, jurors who have grown accustomed to the action on C.S.I. won't even convict anymore unless there are gobs of physical evidence found at the scene of the crime. They need fingerprints, loose hair, and maybe a half cup of the accused's spit left at the scene of the crime.

On the political scene, it's even worse. We had Nixon and his incredibly stupid taping system. We were spoiled. (Can you imagine how wonderful it was to be a liberal Democrat the day the news broke about the tapes? Can you feel the glee?)

But this administration has a well-known obsession for secrecy -- and why wouldn't you if about a third of your administration was bent on funneling cash to the corporate elite, the other third was focused on subverting the Constitution, and the last third couldn't tie their shoes without bumping their heads -- so despite how obvious their awfulness was, I feared we would just never get them. After all, we hear about the August briefings in which Bush was warned that terrorists were planning to use planes as weapons, but we aren't really there, we don't actually see it, and consequently Bush never truly has to answer for his tragic failure there.

But yesterday …

… yesterday we learned there is video of Bush telling state officials, "We are fully prepared" for Katrina.

This is the same briefing at which a top hurricane expert voiced "grave concerns" about the levees. This is the same briefing at which Michael Brown, then the Federal Emergency Management Agency chief, told the president and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff that he feared there weren't enough disaster teams to help evacuees at the Superdome. In this same briefing Bush asked zero questions. "We are fully prepared."

There he is, on video, for the world to see, the CEO president making empty promises and offering hollow assurances to state officials. Enron's Jeff Skilling couldn't have done it any better.

The administration's response to this comes with its own twisted logic. "I hope people don't draw conclusions from the president getting a single briefing," Bush spokesman Trent Duffy said, "He received multiple briefings from multiple officials, and he was completely engaged at all times."

Even if that were true (and the fact that Bush didn't ask a single question during the briefing gives even the most generous juror a sense of doubt about that) then it's actually even a greater indictment of this administration. If he were "completely engaged" in the unfolding tragedy, then he would have had the good sense to maybe skip that birthday party with McCain.

So, if anyone is left with any doubts about Bush and Company, if anyone is wavering out there or maybe thinks that he's being unfairly accused, all I can say is, um, let's go to the tape.

Digg!

It's a shame it takes a videotape to convince people of the unbelievable incompetence of this "administration". But I'll take it.

Video Shows Bush Was Warned Before Katrina

The evidence of detachment from events and the inability to appropriately manage resources for our 'general welfare' is wanton and criminal. We require new management and an appropriate response that will support the flow of truthful information rather than lies from our officials from our government. We instruct integrity to our children and preach it from every church and temple, and excuse scurrilous behavior when it eminates from an idol of our choice. That's foolish and not in keeping with our expressed moral compass.

The remedy is to demand Congressional inquiry and application of checks & balances of power that are profoundly & negligently derailed. Though the subject is Katrina's aftermath, it could be any subject that involves a catastrophe of community concern.

Actually, he's telling the truth!

The truth being, there are no such things as accidents in politics. Of course the 'WE' (meaning his buddies in the NWO illuminati) were prepared for Katrina, it was 'US' who were not. I still find it ... what's the word ... extraordinary, that with so much true scientific, unbiased data on Tesla technology, military patents such as HAARP, Echelon and Scalar Waves available on the web for anyone to access remains a big mystery to the majority - even on an investigative, exploratory site as this! Fact: Katrina and tsunami were not natural disasters. They were the inevitable outcome of a planned attack using inverted Tesla technology. In this, Bush is telling the truth, THEY WERE prepared and that is why they did nothing to alleviate the situation but actively obstructed and delayed NO's fellow humans from assisting in their plight through the robotic army named FEMA which caused untold misery and horror in addition to this crime against humanity. As with 9/11, 'they' were prepared because they had planned it,and that's why Bush carried on listening to a class of kiddies (that man should NEVER be allowed on the same planet as children) telling a story of a goat, when informed by his aide that their 'mission' had been accomplished. He'd seen it all beforehand, on screen, in many dress rehearsals, as was relayed ala Hollywood style around the World as fact. One of the biggest 'inside jobs' grotesquely boasted on screen. Why are we still talking about the planes and 'tip - offs' when there is a wealth of evidence that the building was detonated by an implosion of nuclear devices? The only ones within the WTC who were prepared were to 500 or so Israeli staff who decided to all take a 'sickie' that particular day. The others who were prepared were those who pre-empted the disaster through making a ton on the stockmarket. It's all there for anyone to see. It is tragic that people, as a whole, suck up to what the common enemy in our midst says on this or that, then blindly debates the load of garbage they've been fed. Courageous men and women have exposed the truth and risked their lives in doing so, do they not deserve our attention? Time has run out; it is time WE WERE PREPARED to stop falling for the BS and get informed of the FACTS of life before THERE IS NO LIFE. It's time to grow up about this or we are doomed as sitting ducks being thrown crumbs of illusion which are clearly choking us to death. So, Bush is telling 'us' something here and the 'WE' he refers to does not include 'US' or The U.S. for that matter. When you see how they operate, and what is behind the agenda, you hear the truth of their statements and the lies; plain as day. But don't mind me, I'm plain Daft.

George Bush is dishonest, irresponsible, stupid, and greedy. What does this say about the American people who re-elected him? And where are the Democtats when the republicans are falling all over themselves as bits of the truth comes out? Is it time for a new political party, perhaps the "Progressive Responsible Party"?

this will have little or no impact. Even Bush supporters figure he's going to lie, or rather bullshit, when it's convenient, and they're comfortable with it. So, no one, aside from those who already care, will care. People really need to stop looking at Bush as a person who does things and start looking at him as a brand. Why do people think well of Target, Apple and Google, but poorly of Walmart, Dell and Microsoft? Mostly branding. And Bush's popularity is simply amazing despite dozens of reasons, ie scandals, bad decisions or law breaking.... and yeah... I think 42% approval rating is a pretty spactacular accomplishment all things considered.

Thank you "Daft" for saying exactly what should be said all over the country and on every network. You have the intestinal fortitude to speak the truth, especially regarding 9/11, that I can not persuade many people in my city to believe. You are so correct, the evidence is out there and very obvious for anyone who seeks the truth. I have had to come to the conclusion that Americans who still absorb the rubbage from the administration, passed on through the broadcasting networks are just cowards. Too frightened to face the truth because it will call for action they are too frightened to take.

What gets me is how they dragged Bill Clinton's petard before the nation and forced him to apologized for lying about a personal indiscretion that didn't hurt anybody, except his immediate family, and was really none of anyone's business. The same people who took Clinton to task so gleefuly look the other way when it comes to President Bush and uberFuhrer Cheney lying and thousands of people suffering as a result.

In my mind they are all accomplices in this tragedy - by being in positions to do something about it and simply not.

I'm really looking forward to O'Reilly's attempts to exonerate Bush on this one. "The president didn't ask any questions, but he was thinking really hard about it"? ... "Well, there were some misunderstandings, but he really did have good intentions"? The truth is that if the Louisiana National Guard and their equipment had been at home, where they were supposed to be, then hundreds or thousands of lives would have been saved, as well as a lot of property (Perhaps they could have dealt with the levees?). Our "Manchurian Candidate" was probably drooling a little and staring off into space when all this went down.

It may be just me, but I smell something funny under the floorboards around here.

A marked increase in the number of "utterly whacked-out", "different planet" kinds of comments.

Much like the post offered up earlier in this thread, about "inverted tesla waves" or such.

At the same time, a decrease in the number of "what a liberal-pinko-feminazi-moonbat-youLostGetOverIt" posts from the so-called rabid right...

What it adds up to, is a chance for the RWEC (right-wing-echo-chamber) to 'cherry pick' "random" posts from the progressive blogs, and parade these "nut-bombs" around as exemplars of the general veracity/relevance of the progressive message.

...not sure it requires a response (a response tends to lend credence to the idiocy, at worst, and hopelessly drags the thread off-topic, at best), but it certainly bears observing.

If I'm correct in my assessment, what would we call this "reverse astroturfing"? perhaps a)"brown-spotting" or b)"brown-staining"? These terms gives a nod to "brownshirt", maintain the etymologic link to "lawns", and with the latter choice "b)", it alludes to the scatalogical nature of the activity itself.

just thinking out loud, here...and the humor of this being a META-conspiracy theory is not lost on me!

All well and good that Bush be impeached but he is expendable. The corporatocracy that controls our "one party with two names" will remain in power. Our votes will still only decide which branch serves the establishment.

To make a difference join The Lincoln Initiative. We are a grassroots movement, no leaders, no contributions, no registration, no meetings. We are not an organization; we're a federation of individuals, each with his/her own issues. We are united only to make "government of the people, by the people, and for the people" a reality.

Well, another video, actually proving our Commander in Thief is a liar...how many of these videos will (the Dumbos who voted for this loser) take before they accept the fact that GW is a liar (Iraq War, medicare, NCLB, education funding, and on and on).

I am still amazed that there are some people who think he is an ok guy....I am sure the folks who followed Jim Jones to the jungles of Guyana felt the same way...

I only wish that the Dems had the courage and the where with all to stand up to these Repulsicans; show some leadership and lead this country back to "government by the people for the people"...what a novel concept that would be...

I've watched the video and no one predicted the BREACH in the levee. Dr. Mayfield said that they didn't even know if the water WOULD come over the levees. There is no where in the video I have seen where someone said "the Levees Will Breach". These are the words of the reporter. Not a transcript of the meeting. Why didn't Mayor Nagen he didn't enact his own contingency plan to remove the people. It is NOT the federal government's responsibility to evacuate cities in times of emergencies. What was Bush supposed to do in 1 day? Rebuild the entire levee system????

not bad! very descriptive. Me likee.

Though, problematic. Perhaps a little to "fresh" for it to grab traction in the MSM?

Can you visualize Katie Couric saying "...and in the blog wars, a vicious skid-marking attack by the "BrownNosesForBush" cyberTerrorist organization has left the editors of the DailyKos reeling, trying to contain the damage..." with a straight face?

of course, there's WAY TOO MUCH wishful thinking in that faery-tale quote...Couric calling a Heritage Foundation-supported group 'terrorists'? in my dreams. They'd be called 'cyberTruthCrusaders' instead...

consequentialism and malign neglect
Posted by: wli on Mar 3, 2006 2:24 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Understanding why this was done is not terribly difficult. Once the storm arrived, the consequences were relayed. Scattering Democrats to the four winds where they are inconsequential in the electoral scheme was not viewed as a bad outcome. As a result, the "response" was to let it become as bad as possible to "evacuationmander" Louisiana and turn it into a red state. The maps provide strong circumstantial evidence, namely motive, and the specific contributing criminal offense of selective emergency declarations:

map of emergency declarations by parish

This shows Orleans Parish in particular was intentionally omitted from emergency declarations. The kind of cherrypicking observed here is highly atypical. Usually entire states at a time are declared disaster areas, even when various areas within the state are unaffected.

2004 electoral results by parish

This demonstrates a strong correlation with political motivations. Orleans Parish is essentially the only highly concentrated Democratic voting bloc.

population-weighted cartogram of Louisiana parishes, colored by 2004 electoral results

This further illustrates the nature of the geographic distribution of Democrats in Louisiana. The big, blue patch is Orleans Parish, inflated to represent its population relative to other parishes.

The means was clearly the response. The opportunity was Katrina itself. And now this video provides the smoking gun for at least criminal negligence, if not ethnic cleansing outright. It is also the case that the denial of the right of return associated with the Katrina response falls under various crimes against humanity/genocide statutes of the International Criminal Court, though some lax interpretations may let them off on technicalities.

Nafeez Ahmed's research establishes a strong association of this sort of action or prevention of others' action by upper political echelons to the strategy of tension and the same theory is applicable to numerous other sorts of atrocities. What he describes is a philosophical approach of "consequentialism," where the eventual outcome of a terrorist attack (properly interpreted, disasters and economic catastrophes likewise) is viewed as positive by upper political echelons, so they order their subordinates to let it happen or even help foment it, and thwart attempts to forestall or prevent it.

There are other philosophical and ideological motives. For instance, if "government is the problem," and viewed as nothing but a corrupt patronage engine, the use of governmental resources for the public good or saving lives is nonsensical, at least assuming the belief is sufficiently deeply held. If governmental office is merely an engine for patronage, it's only natural that a horse judge fired for incompetence should be appointed to critical disaster management, since the nominal function of his office is a priori meaningless. If government is a priori inefficient and ineffective, why is there even a reason to try to carry out the duties of government office efficiently or effectively?

If this shows how much he cares for Americans, what does it say about his concern for more than 100,000 innocent Iraqis and Afghans murdered on his direct orders, how much sleep did he lose? Not a wink! And this is a man who has daily chats to God.
God with hooves and horns and a long tail.
At least the Americans deserve him because they let him steal two elections while they were preoccupied with their trashy TV interests. But the world should rise up and destroy this "blight unto nations" once and for all, for the sake of the planet.

I too revel in the thought of the truth being revealed at the continual lies coming from the Bush administration's mouth, but the truth holds no meaning when mainstream media gives it no play. There have been several "Smoking Guns" over the past couple years but they always seem to fade into the abyss.
The smoke is already beginning to dissipate on this video footage.

This bears repeating.

One more time: There is an official transcript from that meeting. It clearly indicates that Bush was told of Katrina's impeding landfall and asked absolutely NO subsequent questions about its consequences. Most importantly, he later asserted that no one in his Administration knew that the levees would fail. A LIE. Documented and now verified by the meeting official transcript.

Sojourner, since when does the WP beccome a credible source for you, anyway? That's pathetic cherry picking.

It is creepy how history repeats itself so aptly. It is now widely speculated that Emperor Nero was responsible for the fires that devastated Rome during his reign. It is suspected that he did so in order to reclaim up to one third of the city land for his new golden pleasure palace. One can only wonder at the level of cronyism that ensued back then. Now we have the new emperor, a fiddlin' liar if you will, letting the chips fall where they may (and he didn't even need a match). One need not wonder as to who is getting the contracts to rebuild New Orleans (or more likely the Mall at New Orleans). That is already obvious, if painfully slow. Then again, ask a few Iraqis about how they feel regarding US federal rebuilding programs.

No matter what Bush does or says, it doesn't matter. Nobody is going to do one thing to oppose him. Public oppinion poles could drop to zero in his favor and it would just be reported briefly and then the news commentator would go on to the story about the latest basketball game or who Angelina is currently sleeping with. The Democrats in congress, God bless their meek little minds, might whimper but nothing else. The Republicans in congress will just put out their hands for a little more graft and give a wink to the camera man. The electorate will just flip the channel to Inside Edition and pop another cool one. Is there anyone out there that believes otherwise?
