CNN Most Trusted Name in News? Not for Latinos

Lou Dobbs is using his bully pulpit to launch vitriolic attacks against immigrants. So what does it matter if the channel also has a special Latinos in America series?

When I watch CNN’s “Latino in America” documentary this week, it will be the first time that I tune in to the network in years.

I don’t watch CNN because the network profits from hate speech against the Latino community by putting Lou Dobbs on the air every night. And I know I’m not the only Latino who feels this way.

Dobbs is using his bully pulpit to launch vitriolic attacks against Latino immigrants. He has repeatedly spread lies and made bogus claims, like the one that Latinos are responsible for 7,000 cases of leprosy in America. (There are actually far fewer U.S. leprosy cases, and the disease has nothing whatsoever to do with Latinos.)

Worse, Dobbs has proudly promoted the most extremist anti-Latino and anti-immigrant groups like the Minutemen American Defense. A leader of that group is suspected in the murder in June of nine-year-old Brisenia Flores and her father Raul in Arizona.

That’s just one of the shocking and tragic hate crimes that have occurred recently but that have been largely ignored by the national media. Last year in Shenandoah, Penn., teenagers yelled racial epithets at 25-year-old Luis Eduardo Ramirez Zavala, saying, “Go back to Mexico,” while beating him to death.

According to the FBI, hate crimes against Latinos soared by 40 percent from 2003 to 2007 — likely a conservative figure, since many Latino immigrants are afraid to report crimes to the police.

Yet CNN continues to profit from a show that unabashedly creates an increasingly dangerous, intolerant, anti-immigrant environment. As long as Dobbs continues to get ratings and make money, the network seems unconcerned about what he says – even while simultaneously and awkwardly trying to reach out to the fast-growing Latino market with programs like “Latino in America.”

Big media companies may soon realize that it’s against their economic and political interests to align themselves with the likes of Dobbs. Two new major efforts are being organized to pressure CNN to get rid of Dobbs.

Presente.org launched the BastaDobbs.com campaign and just released a moving video that calls out CNN for its hypocrisy for employing Dobbs while also airing a documentary that will showcase Latinos. Presente is organizing local groups in at least 25 cities.

Another campaign, DropDobbs.org, was launched by several national civil rights groups, including the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC).— which also has called on the FCC to study the impact of hate speech on our society.

As NCLR’s Lisa Navarrete recently told Media Minutes:

“Accountability is what we’re seeking here, not to imperil anyone’s free speech. … It’s about making sure that people uphold journalistic standards and making sure that we have accuracy, balance and fairness in news.”

I hope millions of Latinos watch “Latino in America” to show the network how big their audience could be if they treated Latinos with more respect. I am also going to watch and see whether CNN allowed its journalists to address the role that talk show hosts like Dobbs have had on the rise of hate speech and hate crimes in our country.

CNN likes to promote itself as “the most trusted name in news.”  It’s not too late to make that more than a slogan.

Ask anyone of any race or ethnicity if he or she agrees with everything said on any news program. I'm sure the answer would be no. CNN contains pro-latino news along with what you perceive as anti-latino. If you don't like a particular program, don't watch it or change the channel. Censorship of either side of any issue prevents each of us from reaching an informed decision. AlterNet is guilty of such censorship. Maybe you should stick to the Latino channels only.

This is th 2nd anti-Dobbs article in the last few days distributed by alternet.

I've listened to Dobbs. Don't hear hate or rascism.

Hear about the various costs of illegal migration.

And also as I say, Mexican's are for the most part of Spanish descent. They put down the native population as the U.S. does its native population.

Since Spain is in Europe I don't get the rascist part from that point of view.

I do think there is an ethic component to this whole thing that is going on. Hispanics are becoming a larger portion of the population and the support of illegal migration may simply be the intent to change the demographics of the nation faster so Hispanics gain power. Such a agenda I would take to be rascist if I understand the focus on increasing a particular ethic group by whatever means.

It's simply amazing how much the rascist card is being played. Few have any integrity in clearly stating thier goals.

I often wonder if Americans really understand what Free Speech really is or means!

Free Speech is not a license to lie on or disparage a group of individuals or to incite others into violent acts against those who are deemed as "others"!

Free Speech among your friends, a political rally, or other venue is fine, when you are on a nationally broadcast tv show, and people listen to you and believe you, it is illegal!

Free Speech is your right to say whatever you want to say, but even the Supreme Court has recognized that "yelling fire" in a crowded theater is dangerous to the rights of others and is illegal!

Yada, yada, yada. "Dobbs is a racist, Dobbs is anti-Latino, Dobbs is anti-immigrant...." BS!!!

Dobbs tells the truth about the invasion of illegal aliens and its true cost to our society. This is a message that the pro-illegal alien and "la raza" groups don't want us to hear. They'd prefer that we go along our merry way while they stifle anyone like Dobbs who dares to expose their blatant grabs for power.

Dobbs is anti-ILLEGAL immigration; I have never, ever heard him say one word in opposition to LEGAL immigration! This whole stupid drumbeat by some Hispanics against Dobbs comes about because (according to the Pew Hispanic Center) about 81% of ALL illegal aliens are Hispanic (57% of them from Mexico alone; the other 24% from other Latin American countries.) The self-anointed "leaders" of these groups hope to use the growing numbers, including the illegals who have no right to be here at all, as a power base for themselves. The employers see cheap labor, and the politicians see eventual extra votes. All are self-serving and in it for their own benefit, not that of this nation.

Believe any of these blowhards at your own risk. It's like a mirror image of Rush Limbaugh or Glen Beck.

You know the saying "Do what I say, not what I do." CNN has a racist, nasty, crazy man that must in some way reflect their core beliefs or he would have been fired when the first serious objections came out. So he represents them - what they think - and anything else is marketing. If you wouldn't like being marketed to by the head of the KKK - then don't stand for being marketed to by the company that pays Lou Dobbs the big bucks. You won't be missing anything anyway, CNN News is just like all the other news stations in the corporate world.... they tow the company line... opt for Weapons of Mass Destruction instead of digging into the lies... you won't be missing a thing by turning them off.

There IS a solution to 'illegal' immigration.

Manifest Destiny* II - Go South Young Man

* Wiki - Sometimes Manifest Destiny was interpreted so broadly as to include the eventual absorption of all North America: Canada, Mexico, Cuba and Central America.
linked text

Annex 'Old' Mexico as 51st state.

Seriously.

We need oil > they have oodles
We like tequila > " " "
We love beaches > " " "
They (obviously) LOVE US so...

Since they've got (virtually) NO standing Army/Air Force, let's "make them an offer they can't refuse".

And, Presto-Changeo, Ipso-Facto, no more illegals!

And, everyone's happy (well, 'cept the LouDobbsian/R-Idiot old white euro-centric (very) small 'c' christian types who will finally be 'smoked out' as the racists they are, and almost overnight, THEY will become a minority. Try those 'shoes' on for a fit and tell us what you think.

Let's 'git 'er done'!! Can I get a 'second' here?

Joe Torres, Another AlterNet mouthpiece promoting the "free for Latinos" mentality.
Posted by: CharlesRoland on Oct 24, 2009 3:37 PM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Joe Torres, yet another AlterNet mouthpiece promoting the 'free for all Latinos' mentality which permeates this website. Mr. Torres is more unethical, racist and hateful than the people he points fingers at. Lou Dobbs has never - not once - uttered racist remarks. Mr. Dobbs promotes a land governed by civil laws - The Republic of the United States of America. No one deserves to live in this country that has broken laws to get here. No one deserves our social services - food stamps, health care, schools, etc., that is not a citizen of this country. No one has the right to ILLEGALLY TRESPASS ON OUR LAND, put American citizens in harms way, cost our country billions of dollars, degrade our school systems, and generally refuse to assimilate into our culture. See, when most European immigrants came here they believed in the American Dream. They believed in our society and what we stand for. They did not isolate themselves in non-English speaking communities but instead tried to learn our language and participate in our culture. It never even occurred to these people to come here illegally. These were law abiding people. The hordes of Latinos climbing boarder fences, arriving in the back of trucks, or overstaying Visas are here for selfish personal gain and have no desire to assimilate into our society. The bulk of these people feel that Americans are supposed to just make room for them and allow them to suck off our social services which hardly are enough for the hard working citizens paying the bill. Ignorant finger pointing people like Joe Torres are the reason I feel so strongly about illegal aliens being in this country. I'll never forget that first rally of illegal Latinos fighting for their "right" (what rights?) and holding the American flag underneath and upside down under a Mexican flag. Sickening. That one image is the icon of the Latino mentality. Keep your gangs, your third world machismo mentality, your unwillingness to assimilate - swallow your false sense of machismo pride - and fill out the freaking paperwork to become a citizen. Otherwise, you shouldn't be here. If you are here legally, then I don't know why you would promote an atmosphere tolerant of illegals. They take away jobs from poor citizens who are more entitled to be here. It is often legal Latino immigrants and poor African Americans who are left without a job when illegals steal them. Oh, and I'm sick of honest law abiding citizens having their social security numbers and id stolen by illegal aliens - almost always Latino. Citizens have the say - we set the rules - not the illegals.
Change your own third world backwards country and maybe you wouldn't have to be here in the first place.
AlterNet is a great site regarding stories about the environment and other topics, but I don't understand this picking out people they don't agree with from the media and tv and crucifying them. If you actually watched Lou Dobbs and Bill O'Reilly you'd know they never say anything racist. I'm a Libertarian, by the way, and I believe that we are a country of laws. If you don't like them then nobody forces you to live here.

I live in and was born in America. If I break the law, I go to jail. I find it offensive that people who don't even belong here, their very presence is ILLEGAL and they get to do as they please, is considered so Wonderful that any question of it makes me a hatemonger. Fine. Thats the way you all want it. I'm off to join the KKK. Have fun.

Watch What They Do....Not what they say

Lou isn't the worst thing that happened to CNN, but he comes close.
The WORST thing that happened to CNN was when Ted Turner sold it.

Annex 'Old Mexico' as 51st State

It would appear that Troll Season has begun. Either that, or Lou Dobbs has a lot of accounts here on AlterNet.

Good job, Lou! But I can see past your spelling and grammar mistakes. Trying to throw us off the track, eh?

Illegal Aliens are the root of the issue! Americans are "tired" of them "illegally" crossing our borders, abusing rights that are for "Americans".

What part of "illegal" do some not understand??
