CNN Most Trusted Name in News? Not for Latinos
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest Immigration headlines via email.
When I watch CNN’s “Latino in America” documentary this week, it will be the first time that I tune in to the network in years.
I don’t watch CNN because the network profits from hate speech against the Latino community by putting Lou Dobbs on the air every night. And I know I’m not the only Latino who feels this way.
Dobbs is using his bully pulpit to launch vitriolic attacks against Latino immigrants. He has repeatedly spread lies and made bogus claims, like the one that Latinos are responsible for 7,000 cases of leprosy in America. (There are actually far fewer U.S. leprosy cases, and the disease has nothing whatsoever to do with Latinos.)
Worse, Dobbs has proudly promoted the most extremist anti-Latino and anti-immigrant groups like the Minutemen American Defense. A leader of that group is suspected in the murder in June of nine-year-old Brisenia Flores and her father Raul in Arizona.
That’s just one of the shocking and tragic hate crimes that have occurred recently but that have been largely ignored by the national media. Last year in Shenandoah, Penn., teenagers yelled racial epithets at 25-year-old Luis Eduardo Ramirez Zavala, saying, “Go back to Mexico,” while beating him to death.
According to the FBI, hate crimes against Latinos soared by 40 percent from 2003 to 2007 — likely a conservative figure, since many Latino immigrants are afraid to report crimes to the police.
Yet CNN continues to profit from a show that unabashedly creates an increasingly dangerous, intolerant, anti-immigrant environment. As long as Dobbs continues to get ratings and make money, the network seems unconcerned about what he says – even while simultaneously and awkwardly trying to reach out to the fast-growing Latino market with programs like “Latino in America.”
Big media companies may soon realize that it’s against their economic and political interests to align themselves with the likes of Dobbs. Two new major efforts are being organized to pressure CNN to get rid of Dobbs.
Presente.org launched the BastaDobbs.com campaign and just released a moving video that calls out CNN for its hypocrisy for employing Dobbs while also airing a documentary that will showcase Latinos. Presente is organizing local groups in at least 25 cities.
Another campaign, DropDobbs.org, was launched by several national civil rights groups, including the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC).— which also has called on the FCC to study the impact of hate speech on our society.
As NCLR’s Lisa Navarrete recently told Media Minutes:
“Accountability is what we’re seeking here, not to imperil anyone’s free speech. … It’s about making sure that people uphold journalistic standards and making sure that we have accuracy, balance and fairness in news.”
I hope millions of Latinos watch “Latino in America” to show the network how big their audience could be if they treated Latinos with more respect. I am also going to watch and see whether CNN allowed its journalists to address the role that talk show hosts like Dobbs have had on the rise of hate speech and hate crimes in our country.
CNN likes to promote itself as “the most trusted name in news.” It’s not too late to make that more than a slogan.

Lou Dobbs is not anti-Latino, he, like me is anti-illegal immigrant. The fact is there are between 20 to 30 million plus illegal aliens in this country and the majority happen to be Latino? They want to live in America? Go home and join the line of millions of other people? There is no easy road and I for one will keep up my blogs against anymore occupancy of foreign nations overwhelming America's way of life. I've listened to Dobbs. Don't hear hate or rascism.
Hear about the various costs of illegal migration.
And also as I say, Mexican's are for the most part of Spanish descent. They put down the native population as the U.S. does its native population.
Since Spain is in Europe I don't get the rascist part from that point of view.
I do think there is an ethic component to this whole thing that is going on. Hispanics are becoming a larger portion of the population and the support of illegal migration may simply be the intent to change the demographics of the nation faster so Hispanics gain power. Such a agenda I would take to be rascist if I understand the focus on increasing a particular ethic group by whatever means.
It's simply amazing how much the rascist card is being played. Few have any integrity in clearly stating thier goals.

Once again Alternet supports those who gain the most by exploiting illegal aliens.
Once again Alternet, a trusted source of news for me, is proving it is becoming a valueless, baseless source of nonsense afraid to say no to baseless articles out of what? fear? fear of being called racist by a group of people promoting illegal activity?
Jerks.

High levels of immigration, illegal and legal, suppress USAmerican wages by 3-7%, according to Harvard's George (Jorge) Borjas, himself and immigrant.
The US is the world's most overpopulated nation when you consider our total ecofootprint. The US and China have about the same land area yet consider this: US, 300 million persons X 24 acres/person = 7.2 billion acres of land under human domination. China, 1.3 billion persons X 4 acres/person = 5.2 billion acres of land under human domination. Every new USAmerican means 24 acres of land, mostly tropical rain forest, gets converted to pasture or plantation in someone else's country. Immigration to the US is a race to the bottom for US wages and US and world environment.
As progressives aren't we supposed to be concerned about exploitation?

Free Speech is not a license to lie on or disparage a group of individuals or to incite others into violent acts against those who are deemed as "others"!
Free Speech among your friends, a political rally, or other venue is fine, when you are on a nationally broadcast tv show, and people listen to you and believe you, it is illegal!
Free Speech is your right to say whatever you want to say, but even the Supreme Court has recognized that "yelling fire" in a crowded theater is dangerous to the rights of others and is illegal!

Dobbs tells the truth about the invasion of illegal aliens and its true cost to our society. This is a message that the pro-illegal alien and "la raza" groups don't want us to hear. They'd prefer that we go along our merry way while they stifle anyone like Dobbs who dares to expose their blatant grabs for power.
Dobbs is anti-ILLEGAL immigration; I have never, ever heard him say one word in opposition to LEGAL immigration! This whole stupid drumbeat by some Hispanics against Dobbs comes about because (according to the Pew Hispanic Center) about 81% of ALL illegal aliens are Hispanic (57% of them from Mexico alone; the other 24% from other Latin American countries.) The self-anointed "leaders" of these groups hope to use the growing numbers, including the illegals who have no right to be here at all, as a power base for themselves. The employers see cheap labor, and the politicians see eventual extra votes. All are self-serving and in it for their own benefit, not that of this nation.
Believe any of these blowhards at your own risk. It's like a mirror image of Rush Limbaugh or Glen Beck.

Change your own third world backwards country and maybe you wouldn't have to be here in the first place.
AlterNet is a great site regarding stories about the environment and other topics, but I don't understand this picking out people they don't agree with from the media and tv and crucifying them. If you actually watched Lou Dobbs and Bill O'Reilly you'd know they never say anything racist. I'm a Libertarian, by the way, and I believe that we are a country of laws. If you don't like them then nobody forces you to live here.
