How can we protest this and stop it? Where do people like Sheriff Arpaio and his henchmen get their role models? Does American civilization have to head in this perverse direction? Start erecting arches at the roads leading to Herr Gruppenfuhrer Arpaio's little concentration camps that say "Arbeit Macht Frei". Everytime he has a public appearance, turn out and overwhelmingly shout "Sieg Heil!" whenever he appears. Have the SS Totenkopf(Deaths Head) emblems made up and distribute them to his deputies whenever you see them. Call him and them the Nazi Schweinhundts that they ARE. Send him copies of Mein Kampf every day. In fact, bring copies to his press conferences and fling them at him like...shoes.

There are a few ideas. when his supporters show up, give them copies of Mein Kampf as well so they know they're Nazis.

it would be interesting to find out where Arpaio's ancestry originated. And did they have a 'green card" to enter the U.S.A.? Maybe he's a member of the "First Nation" and should treat whites like this too! All men have the right to be treated with dignity, under the law, right or wrong. 10% of the whole population of Mexico now lives in the US illegally. If we wanted the US to become Mexico wouldn't we move there instead? I say, "No, thankyou for the offer".

We have told 6 billion people that capitalism is going to do great things for them, but we are entering a new decade that will see huge numbers of people eating dirt in sleeping in gutters.

Here in the US, we can make it easy on ourselves by throwing off the yolk or we can make it suckful and give up.

These 'Detention Centers' only make our country Weaker- esp inregards to National Security. We have had NO Terrorist enter this country from our Southern Border. And there is a good reason for that. Not only do the Latino's not want their access further exposed, but they too don't want themselves affiliated with these american Hating Groups, hell bent on destroying US.
These routes of course not only provide avenues for entry to seek employment, but also are the means to bring over Drugs. these Drug cartels are not freindly to those seeking to kill their customer base, which would effect their business'. so in essence the Mexican Cartels have been covering our southern Ass. Obviously the terrorist groups already Know this, since thsoe that have been apprehended came through Canada- or straight in on Visas.
The Latinos and the Drug dealers cross the border for access to more money. Now if we continue to degrade their people, Hold them hostage for extended periods of time that may very well encourage them to seek monetary gains through other sources, Like hooking up with the Terrorist groups. so far that has not been the case- but continued injustice and humiliation, may just provoke a New Allegience.
It is not the Latino's seeking jobs who 'steal our jobs', it is the corps who have been allowed to maintain this shadow labor force. The corps have pertpetuated this Immigrantion 'debate', wanting to maintain the 'Us v Them' Rhetoric. It not only aides them in using these immigrants as scapegoats for their use of cheap labor, but also undermines Our demands for better wages, bennies and working conditions- Like Lockheeds CEO Admitted so brazenly 'I can hire 9 Mexicans for the price of 1 American' ie- "careful Americans we'll just move our business south, so take what we give you", essentially telling Americans that the american Dream is The corp sto control. Corp slove when they hear Mexicans being blamed for Job loses- great Scapegoats for their Devaluing All Labor, including US.

Thank god someone is doing something about illegal immigration. Most of the people that post a negative against the sheriff don't get it. These illegals did not come through a place like Ellis Island and give their allegiance to the United States, they sneak across the border and take jobs, eat up our money going through our medical clinics and somehow get social security which we pay for and people defend this thievery. If you want to come into this country, do it legally and no one will care. One way to make people not want to come here illegally is do what the sheriff is doing. The Sheriff is an elected official who has regularly been re-upped at the polls by the citizens of Maricopa. He most recently won reelection last year. You got a problem with that? Methinks this is a matter of Arizona culture that reaches far beyond the office of the Sheriff. If the people didn't appreciate his antics, they wouldn't support him. For starters, who would move to Arizona in the first place? It's regularly 120 degrees in the summertime, there is no water, and the only native forms of life that live and flourish hide under rocks. Arizona is more like an alien world, a hostile planet, than any other state in the Union. Sheriff Arpaio is what Arizona is all about. People stuck there for whatever reason: in jobs, or in jail, have only themselves to blame. Oh, and please stop cranking about the illegals. If they don't want to get arrested, they should stay home. If they want to risk sneaking into the Land of the Free, then they should be prepared to pay the price when Sheriff Joe runs them down and lassos them.

As a white liberal male I look forward to my AlterNet newsletter in my inbox each day, but the majority of articles pertaining to illegal aliens in the United States are very bias against the traditional existing American culture, including African Americans and LEGAL immigrants. As a left-leaning Democrat living in Massachusetts I am hard pressed to find people who agree with your pro-illegal alien stance. African Americans, who are often negatively affected by illegals more than Caucasians, are devastated financially by the huge influx of illegal aliens who can work for much less. Hispanic LEGAL immigrants, along with native-born Hispanic Americans, are the most vocal about the horrible consequences of America's lack of action against illegals. These people agree that the flood of illegal aliens destroys their neighborhoods, drys up much-needed aid, and raises crime. The unwillingness of illegals, mostly Hispanics, to try and assimilate into America's melting pot is causing problems for not only legal Hispanic Americans, but the population as a whole. Anyone who is for open boarders with Mexico is ignoring the drug gang culture taking place all along the boarder. They are ignoring the diseases being reintroduced into America after decades of eradication. Do open-boarders people think American tax-payers should pay for the health care of all illegals? Should we be responsible to immunize these people? Why can open boarders people realize that the Mexican government needs to be accountable for its own people - and the Mexican citizens should hold their government accountable. Mexico is among the wealthiest countries South of America, yet they have the greatest population of poor and neglected. If there are American's who care so much about illegals then their efforts would be better spent supporting change in the countries these people come from. In the meantime, it is not fare that American citizens cannot feel safe because of the severe violence and crime infesting once pleasant neighborhoods. It seems that open boarders advocates will stop at nothing to destroy our current culture. It amazes me that there are Americans who could care less about our environment, our citizenry, our hospitals, our social services, our schools, and our society. Children today should not be forced into under performing bilingual schools. Citizens should not have to wait hours in an emergency room because of illegals seeking free health care for often minor sicknesses. Citizens should not have to pay higher taxes to pay for people who broke our laws and took away jobs. If you lost a loved one to an illegal alien drunk driver, or through a shooting between illegals, you might change your stance. If you lost a job to an illegal you might change your tone. If your child was forced to learn in a bad environment because it is overrun by the children of illegals you might change your tome. If your roads are too crowded or neighborhoods being overpopulated you can thank illegal immigration for adding to the problem. If your social services have become underfunded you can often thank illegal immigration.

Oh, one more thing, there's no such thing as a job that American's won't do. I know plenty of American's willing to work on a farm or a factory. That argument is lame.

This article does not tell the whole story. It distorts some facts and leaves out others. For example, it doesn't mentions whether or not the illegal alien had an American drivers license. Probably not. The article says nothing of the epidemic of illegal alien drunk drivers. It says nothing of the infestation of gang culture and crime dominated by Mexicans. Law abiding people are trying to protect their way of life but all you open boarder advocates care about is the rights of Mexican law breakers. Do you hate your country that much?

The position of sheriff holds a special place in American law and politics. He's the only police authority who is directly accountable not to a bureaucrat or state agency, but to the people via the authority of the ballot.

You can migrate to his county and vote him out if he's making you that angry. Until, however, he becomes demonstrably derelict, I don't know what exactly what you're going to accomplish by shining the spotlight on this attention hog.

I am not thrilled with some of the behavior of "Sheriff Joe", but I am even less thrilled with those who write about illegal aliens and refuse to accept the fact that they are lawbreakers, just by being here. Illegal aliens and legal immigrants are not the same thing: the illegal sneaks into this country in violation of its laws and national sovereignty, while draining this country's resources; the legal immigrant obeys the laws, respects our sovereignty, and generally contributes to our society.

With our current economic freefall, we probably should think about a moratorium on all immigration until the picture improves.

Illegal Alien...as in criminal, as in there is not one illegal alien who is working in America that has not broken at bare minimum four laws, and in far too many examples, they have broken even more of our laws in being here. In our broken economy we have far too many LEGAL IMMIGRANTS and LEGAL AMERICAN CITIZENS who are out of work while illegal aliens remain in the work force...that is wrong. Illegal aliens need to be immediately fired from their jobs, and those companies who have hired them need to be criminally prosecuted.

This sheriff is RIGHTFULLY making an example of these illegal aliens, these criminals who think nothing of breaking our laws, think nothing of stealing our jobs, think nothing of stealing OUR AMERICAN DREAM as their own, even when doing so denies and American Citizen a job in these hard times. Amnesty, a pathway to citizenship is not the answer, deportation is the answer.

WAKE AMERICA, the time has come where we need to take care OF OUR OWN, and ILLEGAL ALIENS are not our own, and ARE NOT ENTITLED TO LIVE THE AMERICAN DREAM...the answer is simple....we need to prosecute all illegal aliens, as well as those who hire them, and those who aid illegal aliens (Catholic Church) in remaining in America illegally. Send a few wrong sighted priest to prison for thier crimes and the Catholic Church of America will cease and desist their criminal behaviors.

They (illegal aliens)broke our laws, stole our jobs, and like it or not, are in too many cases infesting our communities, devaluing our property values, and increasing crime...the time has come for them to be rounded up and returned to their countries of origin. Like it or not, WE DO NOT OWE THEM A JOB, DO NOT OWE THEM CITIZENSHIP.

Just a thought though - it was originally thought that Caucasians would be a minority worldwide by the year 2050...that time frame has been moved up by 15 years. A short 26 years from now, WE will be the minority. A very minor minority at that.

Imagine what kind of "payback" will be due us, especially if the attitudes of many aren't adjusted by reality by that time. El Movimiento is comprised of numerous academic, athletic, artistic, business, commercial, cultural, educational, political, recreational, social, spiritual, wholistic and other Chicana y Chicano organizations and individuals working for peace and justice throughout Aztlan, our Americas and the world.

I love how these Americans blubber so vehemently about their precious laws. What laws pray tell did you people observe when you came here on your wooden boats with your snot matted hair and enough disease to practically wipe out the whole of the native population? Nothing like immigration to unite the mouth foaming American masses of European squatters in their collective self righteous wrath. These same people who feel quiet entitled to invade sovereign nations, murder, colonize, render, torture and generally do as they please are now peeved that some impoverished Mexicans who have been screwed by the politicking of devious Americans dare to come here to clean their floors for cheap. The best part is all the blathering about their all important language and assimilation, as if any Mexicans could ever assimilate to the satisfaction of a nation of hysterical Anglo Saxons. Of course why any Mexican would care to identify with a nation of hate filled racists who spew nothing but resentment at them is beyond any reason. Greet them with fury then demand to know why they won’t assimilate.

Maybe the laws you Americans should concern yourself with are the war crimes you are partaking in as you send your sons to squat and occupy people’s homelands. You want to bring your fists down on peoples homes then question why they dare to immigrate to your yard? A testament to true sickness.

Where's the ACLU? This is cruel and unusual punishment. Humiliated like concentration camper marches through Hitler towns. How could people stand and watch this. Read the Book Thief, by Markus Zusac for illustration of this very thing in Nazi Germany. I thought this kind of crap was safe in the Nazi past.

as a country, and we don't even realize it. The so-called War on Terror has resulted in Terror amongst our own and unnecessary divisions. We're all one human family, but these dehumanizing systems are dividing us and only end up helping huge multinational corporations that don't give a damn about individuals. Poor American workers are made to feel as if immigrant workers are their natural enemies when it is actually international management that has secured wealth for itself at the expense of all workers.

Unions have started to see the light. What we need to do is support the humane legalization of immigrants who deserve it (with no violent criminal records), integrate them into society and have them join the labor struggle so that we may negotiate contracts that benefit all workers, not just upper management. Arpaio is just a demagogue who is exploiting the misery of the weakest in society to burnish his own credentials. This sickens me. The struggle continues. Peace

Illegals don't pay taxes on their income or property, but I do, AND I am a citizen. I can't legally break laws. If Mexico is so bad that we keep getting these poor refuges trying to escape, maybe we should just invade and make them all Americans. Oh, wait- we just need some really cheap labor to pick apples, or cotton or whatever since Americans don't want to. Where have I heard this before?

folks of his ancestry's unhappy past. It hasn't been too long ago that Italian-Americans were poorly treated by the police and immigration authorities too. Everyone knows the nasty term for "Without Papers" that racists apply to this ethnic group. One of the weirdest scenes I've ever seen in a movie was Ernest Borgnine (another Italian American but not playing one) calling Italian American Frank Sinatra that name in "From Here to Eternity". (Was this done intentionally to make it as ridiculous as it ought to be?)

Mr. Arpaio needs a refresher course in how different immigrant groups have been treated om arrival in this country by those of us lucky enough to get here a few years before. I think he's forgotten something he needs to be reminded of.

Caesar Chavez wanted illegal immigrants out and, long before the Minute Men, Chavez’s brother patrolled the border and resorted to violence to stop illegal immigrants from crossing. Both Chavez and his brother knew, as every working Mexican American in the Southwest knows, illegal immigrants drive down wages for all. They are used by illegal employers to drive out honest employers. For that matter, H1 visa holders are used for the same purpose.

I happened to read this item at the end of a day I spent among immigrants. Because the weather was unseasonably warm for February in Chicago, my husband and I took a bus to a neighborhood that is about half Middle-Eastern immigrants and half Hispanic immigrants, to go out to lunch and enjoy a stroll. We walked on streets lined with small but bustling immigrant businesses---retail stores, auto body shops, computer classes, laundromats, restaurants, and plenty of bakeries and food stores. We bought some interesting cookies and condiments at an Arabic store where a young woman was baking baklava in a gigantic oven. We bought jam from Serbia and grape leaves from Turkey at an Eastern European market. We had lunch at a Lebanese restaurant; a tableful of hummos, tabbouleh, lentil soup, fattoush, kofta sandwiches, and mint tea came to $18. Some of the ladies we saw walking around were veiled. Signs on the front of stores were typically written in English, Arabic, and Spanish, and sometimes Korean too. Our lives were enriched by this contact with immigrant cultures, and our city is enriched by the vibrant, energetic, useful presence of immigrants. A poster to this thread complains that immigrants will make American towns resemble the Bronx. What makes him think we would want our cities to resemble small-town Ohio? And I hope that the Nazi sheriff gets arrested. There is such a thing as abuse of office.

I lived in Arizona for twelve years during which time I witnessed the State's reversal on its racist stance regarding the observation of Martin Luther King (due to revenue loses associated with the Super Bowl); daily gangland drug murders; 250 border crossing deaths per year; billion dollar theft of taxpayer's money on under the guise of 'alternate fuel' vehicles; a Board of Regents who hired unqualified university deans in order to control those institutions; the worst educational funding it the country; and on and on and on and on. Given the context, an out and out fascist like Apairo...well he kind fits the culture.

To my horror I read some of these comments and realized that the overwhelming majority of you are on the side of the lawbreakers, Might I remind you that these people broke the law. They either came in this country illegally and or broke the law while here.

Immigrants come into this country legally, with the proper documentation. If they wish to call my country home, they apply for coitizenship, get a job, pay taxes and learn to speak the language. They are welcome.

People who sneak into my country ILLEGALLY, do not apply for citizenship, refuse to learn the language, work for cash, do not pay taxes and live off the system that I support with MY taxes are not welcome.

After reading responses to the article referring to sheriff Arpaio, it seems clear to me that there is a widespread misunderstanding of the difference between legal and illegal immigrants. My ancestors were legal immigrants, but they certainly bore the brunt of name calling by those already here in the USA. I could teach a course on legal vs illegal immigrants. Many of the writers need such a course, but I'm not offering. Please educate yourselves before commenting. Thank you for your attention.

Illegals in AZ have it made. They get FES insurance--it only pays to have babies. They can go into any BofA and show their MEXICAN ID card and automatically get a free checking account,AND a Visa Credit card with a $10000.00 limit. They do not have to pass a credit check to get an apartment. I had to wait 4 hrs to find out if my credit check passed BEFORE I could get an ok to move in.The illegals drive cars with plates from MEXICO on their cars. They wait too long to get emergency medical care. When they get hurt on the job, illegals are allowed to file for Social Security Disability. That they have NEVER paid into!! These are illegals who come here,get better medical care than our own uninsured LEGAL Americans and NEVER get charged a dime. The kidnapping rate and home invasions have increased dramatically this year. The Mexican drug cartel is in the Phoenix area terrorizing people who may or may not owe them money. As is, MS13.These, folks, are terrorists!! There are kids who have spent a few days in Arpaio's tent city for DUI. They won't be going back. They didn't like the pink underwear OR the balogna sandwiches. Arpaio has a point. His recidivism rates are low. The streets of Mesa were very clean while I was there, thanks to the chain gangs.There is a Christmas Tree Farm there that is run by the inmates of Tent City. They are decreasing the costs of the county to house them. You might not like his tactics, but it seems that he is trying to send a very clear message--don't bother coming here. This is your welcoming committee. Arpaio is feared and revered by the fine folks of AZ. He has been re elected by the people.Must be something they like about him!!

A few days ago, the Italian Government approved a law allowing general practitioners, as well as doctors working in Emergency Rooms, First Aid Clinics and Public Health Centers, to denounce illegal immigrants requesting medical treatment, thereby encouraging doctors to ignore both the Hippocratic oath and their professional code of conduct. Fortunately, most of them are against the measure, stating their intention to declare themselves conscientious objectors. Indeed, most doctors would never denounce those who turn to them in need of medical care, especially in this case, where we are dealing with the most vulnerable segmants of society. The entire maneuver of the Italian Government reflects an unabashed cynicism, and is motivated by the political necessity of maintaining good relations with the xenophobic and racist components of their political coalition. Whatever its motivation, it remains an ethical and civic disgrace. Many Italian citizens have already joined this group on FaceBook, in order to voice their opposition to a maneuver that goes against any religious beliefs or ethical stand. Now, we are asking citizens from all over the world to join us in making their voices heard, and to express their opposition to a provision that could have far-reaching consequences, in terms of suffering and marginalization, not to mention the serious health risk it poses for the entire population. Please help us to spread this information to as many people as possible, and join the campaign launched by Doctors Without Borders to to stand in the way of this disgraceful measure.
