Why Is Lou Dobbs Minimizing the Impact of Hate Crimes?

By Heidi Beirich, SPLC's Hate Watch. Posted November 29, 2008.

Dobbs got nervous after a news conference on link between the rise in anti-immigrant rhetoric and hate crimes against Latinos.

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

CNN's "Lou Dobbs Tonight" recently aired a segment criticizing the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) for holding a news conference earlier in the day calling attention to the link between anti-immigrant rhetoric and hate crimes against Latinos. The groups were reacting to the recent murder of Marcello Lucero, an Ecuadorian immigrant, who was fatally attacked in early November by seven high school students in Suffolk County, New York.

"Suffolk County is a particularly good example of elected officials stoking the fires of anti-immigrant sentiment," NCLR head Janet Murguia said during the press conference. She spotlighted the anti-immigrant rhetoric of Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, saying he had been "notably hard line against immigrants in his county." Earlier, Levy stated that the Lucero murder would have been a "one-day story" if the media hadn't chosen to hype it. Levy later apologized for the remark.

Dobbs denounced NCLR's use of the Lucero murder to call attention to hate crimes. Dismissing concerns about anti-immigrant rhetoric leading to hate violence, Dobbs called the groups "advocates of open borders" and mocked them for being "long on rhetoric and absolutely, absolutely devoid of facts or respect for them."

Dobbs, who has a long track record of defaming immigrants by linking them to crime, disease and other horrors, would probably like to pretend that immigrant bashing doesn't lead to hate crimes. But the facts of the Lucero case show otherwise. The teens implicated in Lucero's murder specifically declared that they were going to "go jump a Mexican" and went out hunting in the ethnically diverse village of Patchogue. Latinos in Suffolk County have long reported being threatened and physically harassed and there have been other highly publicized attacks there, including the near-beating death of two Mexican day laborers in 2001 and the burning of a Mexican family's house in 2003.

Dobbs also took issue with the idea that hate crimes targeting Latinos are a problem. Dobbs' report cited the FBI's annual hate crimes statistics to make the point that hate crimes nationwide had dropped from about 7,700 in 2006 to 7,600 in 2007. Dobbs claimed that hate crimes in Suffolk County had declined under Levy.

But it is widely known that the FBI's numbers severely undercount the extent of hate crimes in America. In fact, according to a 2005 Department of Justice study, there actually are about 191,000 per year--nearly 30 times the FBI's numbers. Most hate crimes are not reported to police and many jurisdictions do not participate in the FBI's voluntary hate crime reporting system. Hate crimes against undocumented immigrants are particularly underreported, because of an understandable reluctance to contact state officials.

And as limited as the FBI figures are, they show that hate crimes against Latinos are on the rise, having gone up by 40% since 2003. Dobbs left out that fact .

By diminishing the importance of hate crimes, Dobbs ignored the unique threat these crimes pose. The terroristic effect of hate crime creates fear and distrust along already fragile intergroup lines in a way that other crimes do not. When a black man is dragged to his death in Jasper, Texas, it instills terror in the entire black community.

Lou Dobbs, Broken Borders

This isn't the first time Dobbs has had trouble with facts. In what has now become a rather infamous incident, in 2007 Dobbs relied on Madeleine Cosman, a woman who repeatedly ranted about Latino men raping boys, girls and nuns, to argue that immigrants were largely responsible for some 7,000 cases of leprosy that had been reported in the United States in a recent three-year period. The numbers were utterly false, resulting in a New York Times column that said Dobbs has "a somewhat flexible relationship with reality."

It's not the 'Mexicans' .....It's the Employers

Same Shit different ethnic group. What part of 'Melting Pot' does Lou Not understand?
What escaped Dobbs comprehension on the engravement under the statue of Liberty...'Give me your tired ,your poor, Your huddle masses yearning to breath Free'?
I'm a Scotch- irish, italian, Luthuanian..Did he ever Read Sinclairs 'The Jungle'?
Does he understand racial jokes began when thee groups began to migrate to the US?
What's Lou's nationality? What struggles and discrimination did his family endure just to assure their descendants became natural born American Citizens?
I worked in the Horse industry...I didn't get pushed out by the illegal 'Mexicans'...I got pushed out by the American employer who decided paying 3 Mexicans was more cost effective than one American. Even though I had a degree in Horse management and years of experience. He even said I worked as hard as three Mexicans- but again numbers help (I can't be three places at once). Add to that the notion that Illegals are a 'Dime a Dozen' and so Unfair labor practices are not a concern- If they don't like it, they'll just find another to take their place. If they short change them on Pay, Who are they going to tell. If they are housed in substandard conditions- who are they going to tell?
Regardless of the ethnicity the mentality is exactly the same as it has been for ever new wave of immmigrants-villify the new comers so you can screw the old hands with the EXCUSE that it is all their fault, that you are being laid off, or your wages are dropping.this is a game where employers pit workers against each other in such a way the employer becomes the Winner.
What is more ridiculous to this claim 'Mexicans' are taking our jobs, is the Fact 99% of these Jobs Americnas WON'T DO!
Please don't tell me most Americans are Dying to work the Fields or shovel Shit. I'm part of a Dying breed which DOES Love the smell of Manure in the mornin'- but the majority of you are not. So If I can comprehend WHO is screwing me out of a Job, then so should the White collars and their Housewives (reason there are Mexicans Tacking up your daughters horses Lou! Or mowing your lawn or cleaning your pool, or washing your windows!!!)
those of US in 'Blue Collar' Jobs should be helping lift all Worker standards, thus defeating this attempt to cheapen All Labor. If the illegals are placed on a level wage scale, then employers will once again look for the Bigger bang for their buck in employees- Not Just Labor, but Skill. And on that level Americans Will be the more Logical and Cost effective employee. A pair of Hands are far more valuable if they have a skillful brain to guide them.In Most cases Americans beat Mexican labor hands down because we have the Education and Expereince they were not afforded in their own country- reason they want their kids to be educated here and become citizens....Because We are the most skilled Workers in the World.
frnakly when a person who has no connection to the fields which hire Mexicans over Americans Bitches about 'mexicans taking our Jobs'- I could drop them like a 100lb bag of Shit! They are placating and enabling employers to not only abuse the illegals, but also American Workers.they are allowing Incs to use these Workers as scapegoats for their unfair labor practices and substandard wages, thus aiding them in their goal to undermine the 'Middle Class'.the Mexican Myth is just another stratedgy to push the working class into the 'servitude' class."Take this Shit pay & wages, these outragous hours, these hazardous conditions...Or I'll find a Mexican who Will"- so Who's fucking Ya Now??

actually believe some of the rhetoric which Dobbs spews. He is rather frightening and I find that I can no longer listen to him. I believe that he fails to take responsibility for the anti immigrant sentiment that he stirs up. It seems more likely that immigrants are being lured to this country by individuals who are promising good jobs/good pay, and that the fault does not rest with the immigrants but rather with the businesses who profit from their misery.

People like Lou Dobbs need to realize the damage they do when they spread their 'opinion' as 'fact'. Networks have a obligation to use the public airwaves in a responsible fashion. Telling the truth about immigration is more likely the way to actually bring about change. "The truth will set you free", Dobbs. Try it for a change.

Dobbs must be completely schizoid. According to Wikipedia, his wife is of Mexican descent ( her maiden name is Segura ).

It's bad enough when someone with his 'bully pulpit' spews xenophobia, but for his own wife to be a member of the group he rails against is beyond the pale.

Must be an interesting marriage.

I watched Lou Dobbs for a while after 9/11 but soon grew tired of his anti-immigrant agenda and his throwing some raw redmeat to the ultraconservatives on this issue. Dobbs needs to do a fact finding trip to the 'real world' where people suffer real privation. He needs to develop some compassion and kindness. I'm not holding my breath however. His brand of white male entitlement and priviledge isn't going away soon...unless we unmask it publicly. And unless we the people choose not to believe his and the rhetoric of those with an agenda and ideology of keeping the USA racially and ethnically 'pure'.

"Undocumented Immigrants"

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I like the inventive euphemisms - good job.

Here's something to think about. No country in this world would stand idly by and let millions of 'undocumented immigrants' cross its border at the pace that they do here in the States - not if it could help it. Not Canada, not enlightened countries of Europe, not any other nation. So most of the alternet readers seem to have a very warped perspective on this.

What's most unfair also, is the fact that you guys seems to lump all immigrants into one group. As if an immigrant who came to this country through legal channels is no different than one who walked across the border. You guys are trying to piggy back illegals on legal immigrants and call anyone who is for, say, border security (a very reasonable position) an 'anti-immigrant' or 'xenophobe'. It's a despicable destruction of language and dishonest way to shut down debate.

Really.
I never understood the reason these laws exist!

Laws on top of existing laws.

One of the few things I agreed with Bush.....when he refused to sign the Hate Crime Bill when he was still Governor of Texas.

If someone can change my mind, and explain why they are needed....I'll be more than happy to read your comments.

TREASON !

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
This Alternet article and many of the responding posters are part of a deliberate campaign of slanderous propaganda against anyone who opposes illegal immigration and designed to erase our U.S. borders and impose a CORPORATE North American Union in which our people would be turned into the most wretched wage slaves. Thus, it is a profoundly evil conspiracy in which so-called "Progressives" joined with Bush and his Mexican partners-in-treason along with the criminal drug cartels to erase our national borders, nullify our Constitution and trash our democratic American identity. When the Soviet Union collapsed, a certain group of people dedicated themselves to engineer the collapse of the USA. Will they succeed?

LOU DOBBS AND THE "PETER PRINCIPLE"

Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Lou Dobbs 'used' to be good at economic issues, but CNN has "promoted Dobbs to his own level of incompetence." (the 'Peter Principle")

I have often noticed Lou Dobbs seems to be drunk or on drugs on his show, slurring his words and losing his train of thought.

No wonder! Is he drunk on power -- or just an alcoholic on a drunk..with power or booze?

I think his undeserved expertise on immigration has gotten the best of him...and he has become just another ego-maniacal "Good German", spewing hate disguised as 'rational economic solutions" to the issues of undocumented immigration -- completely devoid of humanity and common sense.

He 'sees evil' in desperate human beings who have been driven from their land (to the U.S.) by the consequences of devastating U.S. policies and the horrible human toll inflicted on them by the corrupt U.S. government and US and multi-national corporations who have BOUGHT THE GOVERNMENT OF MEXICO...AS THEY HAVE DONE THE U.S. GOVERNMENT...which is FASCISM.

WE MUST THANK BILL CLINTON for the devastation wrought by NAFTA and SEC deregulation of corporations (and by default Hillary Clinton who defends it). And the Bush mis-administration and the Republicans ran with the deregulation begun by Clinton and have run this nation into the ground.

LOU DOBBS, a really 'good German', SHOULD MOVE TO FOX...WHERE WE CAN IGNORE HIM.

Hate crimes against gays are the only hate crimes on the rise

I've been listening to Lou Dobbs now for the past five years or so, and I have yet to hear him disparage Mexicans. He grew up poor in Texas and worked the fields with Mexican migrants. He is married to a Mexican woman and has four children who are fluent in Spanish. I doubt that his wife is from a wealthy background as he takes care of his in-
laws who live with him at his expense.

There seems to be a concerted effort by LaRaza and other open border groups to make as much political hay out of this horrible incident as possible. I do want to make clear that I don't want anyone hurt. Let's not lose sight of the fact that each day 12 Americans are murdered at the hands of illegal aliens. Each day 13 Americans lose their lives as the result of illegal aliens driving drunk. There is never a peep out of LaRaza over the loss of American lives, as if our lives are any less valuable than theirs.

I started watching Lou Dobbs over his concern with the middle class and the impact of NAFTA on U.S. jobs. He reports on things such as the safety of our food, medicine, toys, and other consumer goods. He also reports on environmental concerns, labor issues, and the ineptitude and corruption of our government. He is furious at the corporations, which he feels are not practicing good corporate citizenship. He thinks that the border should be secured and then decide what to do with those already here. He has never called for mass deportations. I think that is reasonable, but these groups just want to portray him as a bigot.

I urge you to watch him for a period of time and give him the opportunity to express his views, then judge him for yourselves. By the way, he has been concerned about the deficits, the housing bubble, and predicted the collapse last November.

A crime that is not a hate crime is what? A dislike crime? A Robin Hood Crime? A love crime?

A crime should be punished for the physical and economic damage inflicted, not the opinions of the defendant.

Black guy goes into a "white" bar and gets beat up. Police report, "Hate crime." White guy goes into a "black" bar and gets beat up, "Worst case of of attempt suicide we have ever seen."

nationalism not racism

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Lou Dobbs has said many times on the air that he favors legal immigration and wants more of it. So he is hardly anti-immigrant. He has said several times that the illegal alien workers are the only rational actors in the picture. He does not condemn the illegals so much as he condemns the government that lets them in and the employers who hire them. He is not anti-Hispanic. He would give job priority to Hispanics born raised in the US. In short he is a nationalist. And that is what irritates the open borders crowd and the xenophiles.
He talks about border security “first” because he wants to increase legal immigration. That probably irritates some of his viewers. It irritates me because I want a moratorium on immigration for at least five years, and a change in the immigration laws. After 30 years of conservative misrule we don’t need any more tired, poor, hungry people. With 12% unemployment we need to take care of the people we have.
Unemployment among Black and Hispanic Americans is higher than for white Americans. So if you are for open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens the charge of racism will fit you. Why are you xenophiles so passionate about it? Do you have something against the American workers who are displaced by the illegal workers? You seem to reserve your charges of racism for people like Dobbs, and for working-class Americans who oppose immigration and illegal entry for economic reasons. How many employers who hire illegals do so because they don’t want to hire black Americans? Why don’t you ever excuse those employers of racism?

Phoenix Real Estate Connection

I blame Lou Dobbs and his ilk, in part, for the real estate melt down in Phoenix. The sheriff there took up the banner of "law enforcement" and cracked down on undocumented workers in the local factories. Then Mexicans had to leave their homes. Mortgages defaulted. Drug addicts descended on the empty foreclosed homes. They ripped out all the copper and sold it to people who shipped it to Asia where people used it to build their nice new homes.
So how do these bubbas who hate immigrants come to think that they are doing the patriotic thing? All they're doing is providing raw materials for their economic rivals on the other side of the globe. They are leaving ghettos of boarded up houses in their wake. They are destroying neighborhoods where children played and hard working people once took pride in their homes.
In the "modest working class" neighborhood where I live, there are stores like Fiesta Market and El Rancho whose parking lots seemed to be packed with customers every night. Now those parking lots are thinning out. I hope that our neighborhood doesn't share the same fate as Phoenix.

WHY are immigrants continuing to pour in to America by the millions every year from all over the globe (not only Mexico and Central America) when America has been in a recession for at least a year and the unemployment and underemployment rate is skyrocketing?

WHY is the moronic government continuing to let all of these people come to America when so many native-born Americans cannot find work?

Lou Dobbs asks questions such as these, and for that I commend him.

CALLING ALL INTERESTED WHITE PEOPLE

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
If you are unemployed please join me and other fellow Whites down in Mexico as we immigrate there in search of jobs and better opportunities than can currently be found in America.

We hope to settle about 20-30 million Whites down in Mexico by the end of 2010.

No need to learn Spanish or worry about any 'paperwork' or other petty legalities either -- we'll just slip down there as tourists and never leave.

Please do remember that birth control and family planning will be a huge no-no down in our new White colony in Mexico -- you see, we eventually want to gain a lot of influence there so we actually want each White woman to have at least 4-6 kids; it'll help us gain widespread influence down there more quickly. Don't worry about widespread environmental degradation or how we'll pay for all of our kids...we hear Mexico has a good welfare system. And when our kids are born down there they'll automatically become citizens forever even if we are illegally there!

So come and join us as we begin new lives in warm and sunny Mexico!
