What Part of It's An Utter Nightmare to Migrate Legally Don't You Understand?

By Diego Graglia, Feet in 2 Worlds. Posted October 8, 2008.

The legal system is dysfunctional, and that's a primary reason we have illegal immigration.

Despite all the talk about immigration over the past several years, it’s clear that many people are still mystified about how the U.S. immigration system works. But if you explain it with pictures maybe people will get it. That’s the approach taken by two magazines -Reason and GOOD- who just published new graphics describing the process of immigrating to the U.S. today.

Both show how long it takes to become an American citizen, how many people are trying to do so, what it really means to “get in line,” and “why coming illegally might seem like an attractive option.”

GOOD’s graphic is on a sheet the magazine distributes for free at, of all places, Starbucks coffee shops nationwide. (Click on the image to see it in a large size on their site.)

Reason presents a flow chart showing how difficult and slow it is to immigrate legally. (Click on the image to go to their site and see it in full size.)

Particularly the graphic. While I am quite opposed to illegal immigration (I don't consider the difficulty in legally immigrating to be an excuse), I have been trying to convince people for years that our legal immigration system is broken.

Its nice to have a simplistic graphic that sums it up in one nice neat little package.

It is nationally embarassing for it to be this difficult, especially when you remember that immigration is what made this country great in the first place.

Fixing the process should be amongst the highest priorities of our next administration.

And it isn't just a question of time. There are too many people whose chances of getting here legally are zero. They form a large proportion of those who come without papers.

Even when it's a question of time -- and it sometimes is -- time can be a life-or-death question, and sending money home is sometimes not enough to keep people safe. There are some really dangerous places in this world, and our government is not liberal with refugee/asylee status.

Three words: I DON'T CARE!

I don't care how hard it is to come here legally...IT SHOULD BE!! Too bad for those not lucky enough to be born here...we should have to make up for that by rolling out the red carpet?? NOT!!

NO WAY DOES THAT JUSTIFY BECOMING AN ILLEGAL!

I do love how the little chart-makers use the "what part of...don't you understand?" statement, obviously making a play on us anti-illegal folks who love to say the same with regard to illegals. What I love about it is that by using it, the little chart-makers show they finally realize that the statement is the ultimate encapsulation of the absolutely, inescapably PERFECT logic of our anti-illegal side of the argument! It shows they know we've won the debate over illegal immigration, so now they hope to make legal immigration as easy as illegal immigration as their little get-back. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

One question that no-one seems to consider:
Why does this nation, or any nation, have a duty to make immigration easy? Yes, our country was populated (mostly) by immigrants.
That was then. This is now. Do we need all the people who want to come here? Maybe we should consider eliminating the immigration process altogether, and just issue invitations to those who can be useful to the nation we have today. And if you're not invited, don't be surprised if you're unwelcome.

About 400-600 people died this year crossing the Arizona desert

Immigrating illegally is not just an inconvenience; it is deadly. People who come here illegally do so with the full knowlege that they may die horrific deaths trying to get here.
Each year, about 400-600 men, women, children and babies die of thirst and dehydration trying to cross the Arizona desert. Whatever our feelings on illegal immigration, we need to take a moment and think of those hundreds of dried bodies in the desert. One of the most human talents we all have is the ability to empathize. Whatever your feelings about illegal immigrants, just take a moment and think of all that senseless suffering.

Those hateful comments I read here make feel all "warm and fuzzy" inside. Probably written by those who proclaim "Family Values" and go to church. They must learn so much there as well. Like: "Blessed are the Merciful, for they shall obtain mercy."

Never will I be proud of America after reading the kind of things I read here. The nice rich fat-cats on Wall street have really screwed us up, but the race-haters can't admit that, since the fat-cats are probably like them. These so-called Americans on Wall St. are a greater threat than any terrorist or un-documented worker, but racists never could admit that, right?

Hope Obama wins big, so all you racists can just lose it big time. I will have a great laugh watching that happen.
