Ryan Fundraiser With Casino Mogul Adelson Greeted By Union Protesters
Newly minted GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan was in Las Vegas last night for a fundraiser hosted by casino mogul Sheldon Adelson. The event, barred to the press, attracted hundreds of union protesters opposed to the Romney/Ryan ticket.
Held at Adelson’s Venetian Hotel, the event was “an opportunity for major contributors and influential Las Vegas Republicans to size up Mr. Ryan,” as the New York Timesreported. A few dozen donors attended.
Meanwhile, outside the event, hundreds of protesters affiliated with unions gathered to blast the event. ABC News reported that the demonstrators “chanted ‘Paul Ryan go home’ and waved signs that read, ‘Romney/Ryan Road to Ruin,’ ‘Paul Ryan Hustling for the One Percent’ and ‘This is What Democracy Looks Like?’
The Times also quoted one Republican donor as saying that “it’s a safe bet Israel will come up” during the event. Adelson’s number one cause is Israel. He has contributed millions of dollars to various right-wing Zionist organizations over the years, and accompanied Mitt Romney on his trip to Israel.
Adelson has been a major player throughout the presidential race. He has pledged to give $100 million to help Romney be elected.
The Ryan meeting with Adelson comes as the press increasingly scrutinizes Adelson’s business record. Yesterday, the New York Times ran a lengthy article exploring how Adelson’s Sands Corporation is “a focus of a wide-ranging federal investigation into potential bribery of foreign officials and other matters in China and Macau.”
