Huckabee Makes Legitimate-Rape Scandal Worse: "Sometimes Good People Are Conceived in Rape!"
Akin "legitimate rape" gate continues to have fallout all over the place, exposing just how noxious GOP beliefs on abortion and rape really are.
Case in point: yesterday afternoon, Former Arkasnas Governor and current ultra Right-Wing pundit Mike Huckabee hosted the disgraced Akin on his show and began to list some artists and pastors whom he says were conceived in "forcible rape:"
“Ethel Waters, for example, was the result of a forcible rape,” Huckabee said of the late American gospel singer. One-time presidential candidate Huckabee added: “I used to work for James Robison back in the 1970s, he leads a large Christian organization. He, himself, was the result of a forcible rape. And so I know it happens, and yet even from those horrible, horrible tragedies of rape, which are inexcusable and indefensible, life has come and sometimes, you know, those people are able to do extraordinary things.”
I'm not even sure what his point is here. As the commentariat at Gawker noted, where does this logic lead us? For instance, if serial killers are conceived consensually, does that mean we should ban consensual sex?
Mike Huckabee, GottaLaff reminds us, got into hot water when he released a serial rapist early from prison--and the man went on to rape and kill at least one more person.
We'll say it again and again and again: these beliefs are not extreme. They are mainstream conservative viewpoints. Let's not forget Rick Santorum's "babies from rape are a gift" and "victims should make the best of a bad situation" TV spot earlier this year.
