The Health Care Industry and their Capitol Hill Protectors Are Sabotaging Our Chance for True Reform

By Marie Cocco, Washington Post Writers Group. Posted April 24, 2009.

So far we have "reformed" the health insurance system by reinforcing precisely what's wrong with it.

Every so often, I remember Ronald Reagan fondly -- not for his policies but for his skill at the art of persuasion. Right now, for example, I'd like to call the Gipper back to cock his head, give us that quizzical look and say "There you go again."

Yes, there they go again. They are the defenders of the health care status quo -- that is, the insurance industry and its protectors in both parties on Capitol Hill. And they have been frantically arguing these past few weeks that any coming reform of the health insurance system cannot, should not -- and will not, if they have their way -- include a public insurance plan that uninsured individuals can turn to if they find themselves without affordable insurance, or any coverage at all.

Maintaining what amounts to a monopoly on insurance for the working-age population has become a central goal of the insurance industry, which rightly fears that the government will provide more comprehensive coverage at a lower cost. This is, of course, the whole point of overhauling the insurance system. But never mind.

The industry worries that Americans will find out not only that government-supported health insurance isn't a socialist catastrophe (see, for example, Medicare) but a fairer, lower-cost and more efficient system than the expensive, inefficient -- and failing -- market-based system we have now.

Insurers have gone so far as to offer to stop charging people with existing medical conditions more for coverage, if only Congress and the Obama administration would continue to go along with a system more like the one we have now than the one that we actually need. The goal is to have health insurance reform automatically give insurers access to more customers, but without the competition they would face if the government created a plan that offered better value. In other words, universal coverage (and the taxpayer subsidies that would presumably be required to allow uninsured people to buy policies) would benefit insurance companies at least as much as it would consumers.

In essence, this is what the proponents of such a system want: a new and "reformed" health insurance system that works essentially like ours does today.

But the very reason we are again going down the politically treacherous path of attempting reform is that the system we have doesn't work, not by any standard.

At last official count, it failed to cover 45 million Americans. And that was before the recession struck with force, with millions losing their jobs and their insurance coverage with them. Based on Kaiser Family Foundation estimates, more than 6 million additional people have been left without insurance due to recent job losses.

Per capita health expenditures in the United States "are by far the highest" among the 30 countries that make up the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, in which the prevailing system of insurance is a national, government-supported health care system, according to a February study by three OECD economists. And though we pay more, we don't get better health in return. "The overall health status of the U.S. population, as reflected in variables such as life expectancy and potential years of life lost, appears to rank among the lower third of OECD countries," the report said.

We have known all this for some time. And for some time what we've done is take the same stale approach that relies on the private sector and the presumed magic of the market to cure our system's chronic failures.

We've tried insurance-industry managed care. We've introduced private health savings accounts for individuals, and the use of private insurance plans in Medicare to provide both overall medical coverage and prescription drug benefits. None of these efforts led to more people being covered. None led to lower costs.

In fact, government data shows that the introduction of private insurers into the Medicare system has meant higher taxpayer costs for those beneficiaries who are covered by the managed-care plans, when compared with beneficiaries of roughly the same age and health status who remain in government-sponsored Medicare.

So far we have "reformed" the health insurance system by reinforcing precisely what's wrong with it. To do this again would yield precisely the same result.

It wouldn't be a reformed system. It would be just another way for the insurance industry to game the one we already have.

What it is going to take will be close to a revolution at this point ... But even now the corporations and the status quo know that health care costs will bankrupt us ... if the banks don't.

The best medicine right now is to stick to HR 676 Medicare for All ... compromise will only result in the failure of health care and a very precious opportunity squandered whereby the issue festers for another decade.

Seems to me our government is what's sabotaging healthcare. The health care industry is simply trying to survive.

Our President and representatives seem decidedly bored by their contituents' desire for a real (i.e. single-payer) system. In this respect as in others, the Democrats are blowing their shot bigtime. I think they've virtually guaranteed a Jeb Bush Presidency in 2012.

In my book, it's karmic payback for screwing the voters out of their desired candidate, the better candidate--Hillary Clinton.

Finally we will be dealing with health care reform this summer. The status quo is scared of regulation but more regulation is what they will get.

No matter who pays for health care, hoewever, below is what we really need.Much more emphasis on-

-primary care
-chronic disease management
-home health care
-prevention
-public health
-ethical and compassionate reationing at the end of life

We need to bite the bullet on these basic necessary changes

Is that universal "coverage" will come in the form of catastrophic care polices for the uninsured that have huge deductibles, like $10,000...and benefits would only kick in if they became seriously ill. Such polices would have no benefits like preventive care.

The health insurance giants like Humana and CIGNA have jumped on the universal heath care bandwagon to sell more health insurance policies. They will fight any attempt to break up their massively inefficient cartel kicking and screaming...and will most likely prevail as they did in 1993. "Victims" of universal health care from Canada will be flown to the USA first class to testify against the "horrors" of universal health care in Congress....

Even if we do get a "public plan" that the Democrats will tell us they fought so hard for, it will be written full of loopholes for the benefit of the health insurance industry at our expense. This is because we have been sold down the tubes by both parties, just slightly less so by Democrats.

Anyone want to take any bets?

Insure your car, insure your house, insure your boat- BUT don't "insure" your health. Invest the money in CARING for your health. Get the insurance (PROFIT MAKERS) out of health care. Employers will benefit, employees will benefit, AMERICA will benefit. STOP THE LIES! Let the insurance companies find another line of work- just like all of us down-sized, now uninsured, people have.

Take the corporate and legal protections afforded to this fake 'personage' away and sue them into oblivian! Or send them to prison? Since when is a room full of weasels wearing tailored suits conspiring to screw real people out of healthcare by means of 'pre-exisiting', claims denial, sky high 'deductiables', 'co-pays' ad nausem, a 'real person'??? Universal health care should be a constitutional right as part of "Life, Liberty, And the Pursuit of Happiness" part of that document. Including Dental Care and Vision(since when did those seperate from the body to not be included in a 'total healthcare' portfolio of the patient). Of course this would prevent public enemies like the "United Healthcare" ceo(a slimeball) from making ONE AND A HALF BILLION DOLLARS per year as a salary compensation! How did he achieve this 'salary'? By denying benifits, curtailing care, and screwing tens of millions of americans out of their dwindling paycheck dollars because, after all, its all about keeping the corporate 'person' alive and 'growing'. Paid for off the backs of those who can 'afford' to pay ain't it? These 'health insusrance' corporations are more insidious and evil than the creeps in the banks and hedge funds. Because they are directly responsible for the deaths, pain and suffering of untold millions in this country, period........ May they rot in hell someday!

Oops, sorry my Lefty-barbituatism is showing. (Timmy Wise'll spank me later).

This is about Empire protecting itself from us. Just like the abdication of the obligation to enforce to law against the Bush Junta, now we're going to have to make Obama and the owning-class ruling elite's lives a living hell to get health care.

Or start getting the better half of the owning class to formulate universal single payer without the Empire's help.

If anything the HopeChange cult has shown is, is that it's part of Empire and we're on our own. Either we do without or we do it ourselves. (either that or start grabbing rich people and going all 1789 on them--which may be more fun in the immediate moment but it only perpetuates the Empire).

Bottom line: do you guys get it yet? Obama and the Dims ain't your friends and they sure as hell ain't your allies.

STILL think the insurance and drug racketeers are GOOD people? Does anyone think they should be part of any solution to the mess they've created with their greed and criminal conduct? Does anyone think that in a just society, many of these crooks would be in jail? I do. They absolutely should NOT be included in a single-payer universal health care plan, nor should any effort on their part to thwart or undermine the new plan be tolerated.

Nice article, and nothing new- just repackaged attractively.
Nowhere does it tell you that hr 676 has 74 cosponsors and that a senate bill s 703 has been introduced.
Go to healthcare-now.org, pnhp.org or newsletter@health-justice.org
and GET INVOLVED. Baucus in the Senate and Pallone and Rangel in the Congress have inordinate power- see who has contributed to them on opensecrets.org and start fighting.
We will get nowhere without a fight now= it is us versus AHIP-who's side are you on?

most interesting may be the bottom three. Always before the public placed used car salesmen at the bottom. They have now moved up to third from of the bottom.

We now see real estate finance people and the executives of HEALTH MAINTENANCE ORGAANIZATIONS, HMOS, are beneath them. Health insurance company executives are held in lower esteem than used car salesmen. In defense of used car sales people I will suggest that as the average used car gets better these guys will look better.

On Huffington there is an article on how Obama met with GOP leaders reminding them of his previous two efforts at bipartisanship and the double goose egg they gave him in return:

"Obama also offered payback for that goose egg. A major overhaul of the health care system, he told the Republican leadership, would be done using a legislative process known as reconciliation, meaning that the GOP won't be able to filibuster it.

Congress has until October 15 to pass health care or student lending reform under the normal process. If it doesn't, reconciliation can be used to eliminate the 60-vote requirement."

So, if we're lucky, the Republicans will have nothing to do with the legislation and won't be able to insert their windfalls for the insurance and pharmaceutical industries.

CHILDREN MOST HARSHLY TARGETED BY SOCIALIST HEALTHCARE

Here we have the DEMS always needing a bigger shovel for the level of UTOPIAN propaganda they want to throw at the UNSUSPECTING PUBLIC.

wanna? know the latest??? Michael moore made a progpaganda film where they attempt to bamboozle the PUBLIC by claiming CUBA'S healthcare is better than the USA ....and that the USA should go to the CUBAN model for healthcare.

WANNA KNOW??? what the reality is and whaaat they are really HIDING... the reality is in CUBA people have to BEG FROM TOURISTS for allergy inhalers and aspirin. You can bet if Americans are allowed to be bamboozled into Socialist healthcare DEMS will make SURE USA is WORSE OFF than CUBA.

According to the new stimulus if your child needs antibiotics and the GOV only wants to give them Asprin or NOTHING guess whaaat they will get ASPIRIN or NOTHING.

Whats worse.. if your/adult/child are X percent sick they ARE LEFT TO DIE.

Soc healthcare is MORE expensive AND gives NO HEALTHCARE. We are no scholar, but you don't need to be a scholar to SEE whaaat is wrong with the DEMS scenario.

DEMS LIED to claim our healthcare system is broken. SOCIALIST HEALTHCARE is MORE EXPENSIVE and gives NO HEALTHCARE.

PEOPLE, OUR MARKET BASED HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IS ONE OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD. Why, sure it's not perfect. BUT THE SHORTCOMINGS it faces such as high cost of drugs and insurance---are in part THE results of the inroads the SOCIALISTS AND LIBERALS have already made into our market based health care system.

THE REAL SOLUTION TO fixing HEALTHCARE ISN'T to make UNCLE SAME/DEMS your doctor ....BUT to GIVE YOU THE PUBLIC MORE CHOICE.

ALLOWING the DEMS socialize healthcare not only would prove expensive but DEADLY. Think about it?? DEMS WANT TO SPEND MORE MONEY BUT DENY PUBLIC the meds and services it needs while GOV POCKETS THE CASH TO SPEND ON PORK.

don't ALLOW yourselves to be put off seek LEGISLATIVE and LEGAL ACTION TO KICK STIMULUS OUT AND BAILOUT. go see --The National Center for Public policy Research and American center for law and justice

IN SCOTLAND-462,000 PEOPLE DIED AS A RESULT OF HEALTHCARE FAILINGS

ENGLAND---the NATIONAL HEALTHCARE JUST UP AND DECIDED TO HALT KNEE AND HIP REPLACEMENTS FOR OVERWEIGHT PEOPLE.

in SOUTH AFRICA- PATIENTS DIED after his life saving surgery was RE-CLASSIFIED as 'elective' and CANCELED seven YES THAT'S RIGHT SEVEN times until it was simply to late.

in AUSTRALIA man has been on a 90 day waiting PERIOD---for over 2 years.

in Canada -cancer patients have been DENIED life saving medicines that are standard treatment in USA and covered by USA INSURANCE.

ENGLAND AGAIN---- Alheimer's patients denied $5 a day drug that provides crucial relief because it's considered TOO EXPENSIVE.

CUBA---they are FORCED to BEG tourists for common medicines like allergy and asthma inhalers and even aspirin.

EVERYWHERE SOCIALIZED MEDICINE HAS BEEN TRIED IT HAS FAILED.

The DEMS BRAND of getting around using the term SOCIALIZED MEDICINE is to dress up their BIG GOVERNMENT schemes to bamboozle public by calling it UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE OR HEALTH CARE FOR ALL to 'diguise' the fact it should be labeled as HEALTHCARE FOR NONE so the BIG GOV can pocket the funds.

NO matter how these DEMS CALL soc med it always has the same RESULTS---RATIONED HEALTHCARE, DENIAL OF ESSENTIAL MEDICAL SERVICE, WAITING LISTS, MEDIOCRE MEDICINE, AND UNNECESSARY SUFFERING AND DEATH. and for whaaat?? so gov can pocket the funds. always the bottom line.

MEANWHILE WASH DC SLUGS end up with final say over your most intimate medical decisions NOT YOU AND NOT YOUR DOCTOR.

TAKE A LOOK .. 50% OF BRITISH AND NEW ZEALANDS WOMEN diagnosed with breast cancer DIE. however, HERE IN USA only 1/5th breast cancer sufferers DIE FROM IT. did you know hair dye are directly linked to breast cancer??

25 % CANADIA men and 50% of british men diagnosed with prostrate cancer die from it. HERE, IN USA less than 1/5th men die from it.

BRITISH-ER'S with serious illnesses are 7 times more likely to die from them than AMERICANS with such conditions.
BRITISH-ERS are also 4 times MORE likely to DIE during major surgery than Americans.

IN most countries if you are OVER A CERTAIN AGE like 75 they will let you die.
