Headache and Indigestion -- Is Your Bra to Blame?

By Rosie Johnston, The Independent UK. Posted December 5, 2008.

Bras aren't just about looks; a poor fit can cause health problems.

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

Are you constantly pulling up your bra straps? Do your shoulders fall forward? Do your bosoms bounce when you walk, despite your new balcony bra with lace trim? The chances are you are among the majority of women who have never had a proper bra fitting and whose posture and back health are compromised as a result.

Attitudes about bra fit and function vary by generation. Younger women are more likely to find that their bra doesn't fit properly because, in the good old days, pubescent girls were almost always fitted for bras. The idea of being fitted for a bra when I was 13 would have been gross, but everything looks different after my bra epiphany, which happened in Night Owls on the Fulham Road, in southwest London.

"Your bra doesn't fit properly!" the lady at the cash register shouted, as I checked out the pink flannel pajamas. I pretended not to notice. "I bet you've never had a bra fitting in your life!" continued the voice.

She marched over. I was wearing an expensive underwire bra, designed to give "lift." I had tried it on in the shop, but that was not, I was told, a proper fitting.

"I bet your back strap's halfway up your shoulder blades. Look at your posture! Your bust line is sinking!" My ear lobes, she said, were almost attached to my shoulders. I'd spent years compromising my breast and back health, apparently, and my bra was a load of "shite." I told her I'd always been a 36C. "Rubbish," she snorted. "You're a 30 or 32E."

This was a shock; I'd only come in for pajamas. As chairwoman of the PTA, I did not want an E cup. It sounded huge, like Jordan.

All this is not just a matter of vanity. Last week, the British Chiropractic Association warned that wearing the wrong bra size can lead to a number of problems, including back pain, restricted breathing, abrasions, breast pain and poor posture. The problems are even more acute in large-breasted women.

"Bras are like suspension bridges," says the BCA's Tim Hutchful. "You need a well-engineered bra so your shoulders don't end up doing all the work. Bras that don't fit will affect the shoulders and chest and will almost certainly cause back pain as you get older."

The woman prodding, pulling and hoiking introduced herself as Yolanda Ktori. A passionate advocate of corsetry, she has seen the profession clobbered by our smash-and-grab society. "Women buy bras off the shelf at M&S [though it does offer a fitting service] and don't have a clue what size they are. Some stores offer fittings, but most women don't bother." She pushed my shoulders down and pulled my blades back, showing me where the strap should sit: on the meaty part of the shoulder toward the neckline, locking in with the shoulders and streamlining down the back to stop slipping. "It's like the reins on a horse. You pull everything back, not forward," she says.

The corsetry experts at Rigby & Peller estimate that 80 percent of women who come through their doors are wearing the wrong-sized bra, and they also stress that badly fitting bras can lead to back problems and bad posture. The most common bra solecisms are cups that are too small and bands that are loose around the back causing the shoulders to carry the weight of the bosoms, instead of the back. A bra must be firm (not tight) around the back and support the weight of the breasts in the mid to lower back. Rigby & Peller says the back band should be level with the underwire (Ktori says an inch-and-a-half lower).

Don't wear a bra. It worked for humankind for about 3 or 4 million years, depending on your definition. Only in the last 200 years did anyone divine females need help with their breasts. Natural is best. Bra Nazi's.... go to Hell.

At 36 G, once I started wearing a properly fitting bra and avoiding underwires I was FAR more comfortable. More and more insurance companies are approving health related reductions for women as well, an enlightened progression which I will be taking advantage of. They can either pay for a surgery now or physical therapy for the rest of my life.

It would also help if we stopped fetishizing breasts so much. If women had a healthy perception of their breasts instead of striving for bigger, perkier, or other unrealistic presentations they would be more likely to buy properly fitting bras. Cultural pressures to embrace our sexuality have somehow led to driving women towards thongs and pushup bras. The most properly fitting bras are not the ones that lead to fuller, lift and separate, porn star tits - especially for larger women. But, as with many aspects of fashion like high heels and tight jeans, health and comfort take a back seat.

Breasts are designed for feeding children - they really exist for no other purpose. Put in their proper context, fashion could catch up with health.

Guy's approach to solving your social crisis: we refrain from discussing jock strap nuances...ours does not tuck nor lift out of a personal desire for lifted...bits. It does provide support close to the body when we engage in activities that might harm us if "stuff" moves away too much. Our testis cancer rates and back problems have yet to rear their heads (so to speak, sorry) in response.

Suggest females learn to do what is beneficial to their health, rather than egos. Bra included.

On The Subject of Beauty, Dress, Breast and Complete Embarrassment

A few years ago - we were going on holiday again with our teenage kids and our son's 15 year old girlfriend came with us.

We were going from cold England to a hot place with nice beaches, clean sand and warm sea.

My Son and Daughter dressed completely appropriately

But my Son's Girlfriend who is slim, with long blonde hair and a very pretty face dressed as if she was going from cold England to a hot place with nice beaches, clean sand and warm sea.

Basically she dressed as if she was going to the Spanish or Greek Islands - just completely normally like any 15 year old girl.

But we weren't going to Spain or Greece - we were going rather further

And we had to change planes in Dubai

And we had to wait for a couple hours

And she couldn't stand it because EVERYONE - Not Only The Blokes - But Also The Muslim Women were Staring At Her

She crouched down on the floor and tried to hide behind her boyfriend

They have now been together for 5 years.

She is now 18 and we think of her as just another member of our family. We are blessed with another Daughter.

Perhaps stores should offer more fittings

When I was a pre-teen in the late 60s. All the department stores had sales ladies who helped with bra selections and fittings. I haven't had a bra fitting since the early 70s. Needless to say I know I no longer wear the same size as I did when I was a 105 lb. teenager. I am never really sure what size I should choose when I go to the store now and select my own bra. Stores haven't offered fitting services on a regular basis for decades. Now and then I do see a special bra fitting event but it is invariably during the middle of a week day when only the retired and jobless can attend. I would love it if stores brought back the wise women who used to help with this kind of service. I am guessing that it would help stores sell their better quality bras too.

It's not about fit or wires or straps. It's about the Chinese crap they use to make everything. The last time I went into a Victoris's Secret Store I had to leave because of the smell. What was once quality merchandise is now more junk that's no better than the clothes at Walmart. Too bad, it used to be a classy place. Not any more. Anna

the PRICE of well made well fitting bras...last time i was in a bra shop (not v.s. or fredericks) most bras were well over $50 each and many were near and over $100.00 - needless to say that is out of reach for most of us...and to be able to find "off the rack" sizes (at somewhere like jcp, macy's, etc) outside 30-34abc, 36-42bcddd is extremely difficult. try finding a 38f that is both stylish and affordable.

Bras are not necessary. Seriously. Unless you want to create a certain kind of fashion look in business attire or evening wear.

I am not small chested --- in fact, the same size as the correctly fitted author of this article. After 10 years of bra-everyday from teenage years onward, I stopped. Cost was the big reason. Even the correct sized bra just doesn't hold up well unless you pay big bucks and hand wash. Who has time?

Furthermore, after NOT wearing a bra for two years (ever!), my breasts DON'T sag when braless. Seriously. They hang naturally because my own body tissue/muscles need to support them. Therefore: I've saved money and I have a better looking, more natural looking body. Let me repeat: I am not small chested.

They have just been sued for using formaldehyde in the manufacturing process of their bras. As a result, many women developed huge red, blistering welts under their breasts. Hey, at least now we know what the big 'secret' is! Formaldehyde is for corpses, not living, breathing women who really deserve better. Until consumers have better laws protecting them from these criminals, they need to educate themselves as to what they're really buying.

Lane Bryant bras - cleavage and yeast
Posted by: DivaDeb on Dec 5, 2008 11:53 PM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
My dog ate all my nice $40 bras from Lane Bryant, which pushed my 38D pupps together to make cleavage and lift - and gave me a permanent yeast infection in my cleavage.

So, temporarily, I bought cheap Hanes ones, not as supportive, still with underwire, at $11 each at Walmart. They are more oomfortable. I bought some new Lane Bryant - and I realizes how much they suck! They hurt, dig and confine. I'll never go back.

I'm 41, was fitted at JCPenny at age 10(!) and shown how to do it myself as I got older - measure under your breasts to the back, all around, that is my 38. Then measure around from back to the roundest part of your breast. That is your cup - each inch difference from the other measurement. One inch, A; Two is B, etc.

Bali bra's were freakin' AMAZING - had different cups for different types - full, narrow, average (I always needed full), had padded straps, straps that came to the clasp in back, so there was no slip. What the hell happened to them?

Back when Victoria's Secret only went to 34B or C, I used to say that Victoria's Secret was that they needed to dress those little boobies up so that the boys would play with them. Hee hee heee!!!!!!

Anyone else miss Air America's Randi Rhodes' Friday song "Bounce Your Boobies"?

Have a nice weekend.

Bra fitting is rubbish

You've been comfortably wearing a 36C but the woman and the undergarments store tells you you're a 32E and you buy that?

My girlfriend got "fitted" for a bra in a similar fashion - from a 38C down to a 34C - and couldn't breathe wearing what they said was a "proper" fit.

Go with what is comfortable. It's the only solution regardless of what anyone recommends.

I discovered, during an extended period of unemployment, that my bras were exacerbating a lifelong asthma problem. Constricting an already-constricted chest is not a good idea.

Employers demand the darned things, so if I have to work for a fascist, I wear the largest knit sports bra I can find. Same flop, same nipples, and the nazis have to accept it.
