Barbara Ehrenreich: Why Your Children May Not Get a Swine Flu Shot Before They Need It

Too much faith in private enterprise has left us open to a flu epidemic.

If you can't find any swine flu vaccine for your kids, it won't be for a lack of positive thinking. In fact, the whole flu snafu is being blamed on "undue optimism" on the part of both the Obama administration and Big Pharma.

Optimism is supposed to be good for our health. According to the academic "positive psychologists," as well as legions of unlicensed life coaches and inspirational speakers, optimism wards off common illnesses, contributes to recovery from cancer, and extends longevity. To its promoters, optimism is practically a miracle vaccine, so essential that we need to start inoculating Americans with it in the public schools -- in the form of "optimism training."

But optimism turns out to be less than salubrious when it comes to public health. In July, the federal government promised to have 160 million doses of H1N1 vaccine ready for distribution by the end of October. Instead, only 28 million doses are now ready to go, and optimism is the obvious culprit. "Road to Flu Vaccine Shortfall, Paved With Undue Optimism," was the headline of a front page article in the October 26th New York Times. In the conventional spin, the vaccine shortage is now "threatening to undermine public confidence in government." If the federal government couldn't get this right, the pundits are already asking, how can we trust it with health reform?

But let's stop a minute and also ask: Who really screwed up here -- the government or private pharmaceutical companies, including GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis, and three others that had agreed to manufacture and deliver the vaccine by late fall? Last spring and summer, those companies gleefully gobbled up $2 billion worth of government contracts for vaccine production, promising to have every American, or at least every American child and pregnant woman, supplied with vaccine before trick-or-treating season began.

According to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, the government was misled by these companies, which failed to report manufacturing delays as they arose. Her department, she says, was "relying on the manufacturers to give us their numbers, and as soon as we got numbers we put them out to the public. It does appear now that those numbers were overly rosy."

If, in fact, there's a political parable here, it's about Big Government's sweetly trusting reliance on Big Business to safeguard the public health: Let the private insurance companies manage health financing; let profit-making hospital chains deliver health care; let Big Pharma provide safe and affordable medications. As it happens, though, all these entities have a priority that regularly overrides the public's health, and that is, of course, profit -- which has led insurance companies to function as "death panels," excluding those who might ever need care, and for-profit hospitals to turn away the indigent, the pregnant, and the uninsured.

As for Big Pharma, the truth is that they're just not all that into vaccines, traditionally preferring to manufacture drugs for such plagues as erectile dysfunction, social anxiety, and restless leg syndrome. Vaccines can be tricky and less than maximally profitable to manufacture. They go out of style with every microbial mutation, and usually it's the government, rather than cunning direct-to-consumer commercials, that determines who gets them. So it should have been no surprise that Big Pharma approached the H1N1 problem ploddingly, using a 50-year old technology involving the production of the virus in chicken eggs, a method long since abandoned by China and the European Union.

Barbara Ehrenreich is the author of 16 books, including the bestsellers Nickel and Dimed and Bait and Switch. A frequent contributor to Harper's and the Nation, she has also been a columnist at the New York Times and Time magazine. Her seventeenth book, Bright-Sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America (Metropolitan Books), has just been published. An examination of recent studies of the medical ineffectiveness of positive thinking, mentioned in this essay, can be found in the book. You don't need it

what you need is a bed, plenty of fluid and rest. By the time you're well, you'll have the antibodies against this flu.

There are many diseases that require medical attention, this isn't one of them unless you're in a risk group or you are one of the tiny few who develop respiratory complications. Overall, this flu scare is ridiculous.

The only reason it's getting this kind of attention is because all of a sudden there's a disease that can target all the little hypochondriacs in suburbia. The wobbly housewives who start hyper-ventilating when little Johnny or Debbie cough three times in a row and then pump them full of antibiotics just to be sure. Americans are used to medicating away their issues, it's almost frowned upon to be sick at all. Just have a handful of perkazap and you're good to go!

Ever stop to think why nobody gives a flying f*** about malaria, hanta, ebola and polio to name a few? Because those diseases happen to poor brown people, not little Johnny, not little Debbie.

30,000 deaths a year from traffic accidents, remind me again how many have died from the great pig plague?

Fear and ignorance make such a handsome couple. Back on your meds little friends, quick before you die.

It may be the fault Big Pharma, but it for sure is the fault of Big Government

Nice reflection. However, you can't fault the pharmaceutical industry for wanting to make a profit - that's what it is there for, that's why it exists in the first place. If there is enough demand for the flu vaccine (i.e. if people are willing to pay for it), then companies will come up with the product - hopefully in time, in the required quantity and in the necessary quality. So why are there problems here? Does GSK own the market on flu production (some patents or a friendly ear at the FDA maybe)? Are they in a cushy position with assured N billion dollars for their batch? We need more info on this market failure (and it is evidently not a market failure that is being fixed by State, quite the contrary). Btw, in Europe too, there are problems regarding delivery times, perceived quality etc...

Here is the free market economists' perspective:

And for all those interested in some H1N1 info:

Ok, I'm off to get that vaccination, I have no desire to be in pain in bed for a week or two and/or be carried off by the white-clad SWAT team.

Perhaps Alternet should do a random survey of health professionals and find out what the actual percentage is of Doctors and Nurses who are refusing to take the flu shot themselves.

Then ask them the reason why.

flu season

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
In regard to susceptibility to various colds and flus, three of the most contributory factors are fatigue, stress and increased "socializing" that raises the risk of exposure.

Of course the old remedies of fluids and vitamin C, which is currently out of vogue, nonetheless can help not only to flush the system of infective agents, but can diminish the amount of potential intrusion caused by infection.

For those over the age of 35, the need for amino acids generally becomes higher when fighting off colds and flu. For those over 45, the need for increased protein is generally more important in reducing the impact of colds and flu. For those over 55, digestive enzymes are usually what is needed to shore up the system.

So, was there a contract default?
Posted by: beachcomberT on Nov 4, 2009 3:45 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The essential question is whether the pharma companies competed for and won contracts to supply x number of doses by a certain deadline? If they violated a contract, then they should be penalized financially. If there was no ironclad contract in place, or a weak one filled with loopholes, then the Obama administration's public health bureaucracy should be held responsible for not being tough enough.

Barbara- I agree that public health (including our CDC) needs to move away from unholy relationships with the the for profit private sector.

But the credibility of both the WHO and CDC on mismanagement of 2009 swine flu (A/H1N1) which is neither a genuine pandemic nor a true national emergency is the MUCH bigger issue.

Heads should roll.

Asian Bird Flu!

Buy Tamiflu!

Tamiflu, licensed to Roche, owned by Gilead, CEO Donald Rumsfeld, Director George Schultz...

Next: Smithfield's Hog Factory generates H1N1 swine flu!

The American media drops all mention of how H1N1 originated, (Smithfield is a Wall Street operation, after all), and instead promotes new vaccines from Roche, GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis - and didn't they get a nice legal immunity as well?

Actually, for the banks and their greedy wealthy investors, this is win-win. Smithfield took a little hit, but since the banks own (and thus control) American media, they were able to bury that story six feet under. Meanwhile, their investments in Roche, Glaxo and Gilead are really paying off!

I mean, capitalism would decree that we start more epidemics and allow them to run on and on - because then you can sell more drugs!

It's like with HIV and cancer - do you realize how profitable treatments for those conditions are? Maybe we should have a government program to promote disease, not prevent it!

The wealthy are sick, greedy piggies, there's no doubt about it - and they've got armies of sheeple willing to lie through their teeth on their behalf - aka, the modern American media.

I would have expected better from Ehrenreich. The whole idea that every flu "epidemic,' in an age of access to antibiotics in the US and Europe, needs to be vaccinated against, is a product of medical over-reach and corporate profiteering. Beyond this, there is plenty of clinical evidence that the shots simply don't work very well, almost no proof that they reduce incidence of flu, and they always kill or sicken a certain number of people (my ex-mother-in-law died from a reaction to the Swine Flu vaccine in the 70's, for example).

So while I applaud the focus on pharma's warped priorities, and obviously if there were a serious national health threat, we are poorly positioned to deal with it thanks in great part to the problems Ehrenreich outlines... in this case there is no compelling reason to be doing any of this.

What, were you born this decade? Haven't you seen them play this game over and over again? After a big media scare over a flu virus, isn't there ALWAYS a shortage of vaccine? Doesn't the price of the vaccine ALWAYS shoot through the roof as the flu season hits? And isn't it also true that the big flu scare is NEVER accompanied by genuine signs of a dangerous pandemic? Isn't it true that the shortage of vaccines is NEVER an actual big deal?

We never had problems getting flu vaccine until George Bush tried to prove that government can't do anything right, plus allowed the price charged to quadruple in one short year. (So "No protection for you", if you're poor.)

I believe the pharmaceutical industry is more aware than ever before that if they do this thing right, it makes "government run" services look good, which they ultimately see as a conflict of interest for their bottom line. I think they might be screwing up on purpose, just enough to try and make Obama (and by association any proposed "public option" health care reform) look bad. If a few people die along the way because of it, they're just culling the weak from the herd.

The immune system learns how it is supposed to function by fighting off diseases in chidhood, by design, whether or not one puts God in the design picture.

There is far more asthma now that children are not exposed to whooping cough- and asthma is frightening and sometimes kills. Its victims are older than the children who really did used to succumb to whooping cough.

Then too, often the improvements brought by sanitation are atributed to the improvements brought about by childhood immunization.

While polio was a fabulus success, it is just nuts to innoculate newborns to keep them from getting hepatitis. Go out and find people shoooting up- not innocent fragile infants.

gee, barb, you really dropped the ball on this one. Not only are the above commentators correct in noting that the vacccination is not only unnecessary but very likely bad for you.... but you show some very uncharateristic naivete when you suggest that the "shortage" is due to optimsm. Don't you remember the recent cases of media, idustry, and government hype of some new terrifying strain of swine flue (that incidentally turned out to be nothing out of the ordinary), and the subsequent breathless reporting of the inadequate supply of the vaccine? The tamiflu stock went through the roof as people fell for that one hook, line, and sinker. And here you are, of all people, not only falling for it again, but helping the corporate scum work their scam. Come on Barbara, think before you write.

Swine Flu -- One of the Most Massive Cover-ups in American History

Swine Flu -- One of the Most Massive Cover-ups in American History. Go to Mercola.com and read the actual statistics from the swine flu as it moves around the world. The
person presenting the facts is a flu researcher that has actual studied
this flu and believes that it could ultimately be less significant than the average annual flu virus. He also believes it is already peaking in the United States. By studying the winter effects of this flu in other parts of the world he documents the statistics which show that this flu tends to adversely affect people with underlying illness the most. He is greatly opposed to the vaccination of children and his statistics show you why.

Also, this is what I read from Reuters on 10/30/09

ALTERNET & BARBARA EHRLENHEICH,

I am outraged by this constant misinformation on this site.

This is blatant PROPAGANDA to SELL your book, BARBARA, with your spin on the "positivity" movement as it relates to VACCINES???!!

And ALTERNET, this propaganda further serves your bending over to your god, OBAMA, and his declaring a state of emergency to put FEAR into people to BUY the vaccine benefitting his contributors, the pharmaceutical industry.

OBAMA'S CHILDREN have NOT been vaccinated.

VACCINES are basically POISON containing formaldehyde, mercury and other harmful ingredients used to preserve it.

The "swine" flu is just a flu like any other and may be harmful to those with extremely compromised immune systems.

But why would you want to further compromise your immune system with poisonous vaccines?

For the FACTS, PEOPLE, please refer to:

I don't think so.

Do your research, people! If you believe that vaccinations containing poisons are acceptable - well, then by all means get yourself vaccinated immediately and the consequences be damned.

Even the government has recognized the dangers of mercury but they continue to push vaccines loaded with this garbage because it is to the advantage of Pharma. Pharma is making a killing (in more ways than one) on the vaccines for the non-existent pandemic.

Americans have become INCREDIBLY lazy. We want everything done for us. Many many many people refuse to take responsibility for ANYTHING - including their own health and wellbeing.

If you wish to poison yourself - by all means, go ahead.

If you wish to be healthy, then you have to begin to take over the care of your own body and NOT leave it up to the so-called "experts" (ie doctors, pharmacists, FDA, CDC, etc. etc.)

Interesting, how all of a sudden, big pharma believes in a demand-side windfall.

Would you be surprised to find out, that first they create panic atmosphere about the swine flu; next they promise life-saving vaccine; and later yet, the vaccine is in very short supply? Short supply and high demand drives the price up...

Want to bet that big pharma did NOT create the swine flu in some lab? Want to bet that they did NOT purposely infect people with it? Want to bet that they do NOT count on money rolling in, as the populus in panic is willing to pay arm, leg AND a first-born for the swine flu shot?

You DO NOT want to bet? Funny, neither do I.

The eggs used to produce the H1N1 vaccine

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
According to Sunday's 60 minutes (CBS web site):

Visual- I Love Lucy style conveyor belts of eggs getting innoculated at top secret flu production plants.

(one thinks of crowded chickens and Avian flu...)

Voice explains- the availability of the vaccine has been delayed to to the (culture, virus?)'s being slower to grow in the egg than originally anticipated.

I have no idea whether the antibiotics routinely given chickens (to keep them from getting overtly diseased despite their mean and cramped conditions) have an impact on the delay of the culture- but it sure would be great if inquiries into the slowness of production might lead to a crackdown on dosing chickens with prophylactic antibiotics.

It seems that more of us- including the pharmaceutical manufacturers of existing antibiotics, have an interest in not encouraging antibiotic resistant pathogens than whatever fiend can profit from drug resistant pathogens.
Still, where do we find the land for chickens to live safely and well given the increasing size of the US population, and competition for temperate land with water? Are the chickens a metaphor for us?

Swine flu has killed about 5000 people since it's emergence 8 months ago. Which means that At it's current rate it will kill about 7500 people by April.

(5000 ppl/8mo)(12mo) = 7500 ppl

In the meantime, around 10,000 people will have died from being struck by lightning. (SOURCE) Thats a 25% higher chance of being killed by lightning than of dying from swine flu.

I'll take my chances.

We were on a wait-list for the vax. Then Mrs. DaBear got the H1N1 flu (picked it up in LA and brought it home to Vta, yay). Kids got it, I got two weeks ago. We just stayed home per the CDC recommendations. It was little worse than an annoying cold that started with a fever for a coupla days. I have asthma and was all concerned about my risk factor. Thankfully, kids and mate are low-risk anyway. IT WAS NO BIG DEAL and now we're "vaxed" by having had it. No need for shots. Rippeee!

Honestly Beijing Flu was far fuckin' worse than H1N1.

From the Oprah crowd and the MSM generated hysteria we should have died horrible, slow agonizing deaths. Um... yeah.

The case against vaccines has never been told, however a little research turns up the fact that there has been a cover-up of mass proportions. Check out "A Deadly Immunity" by Robert Kennedy. At a meeting in Simpsonwood they found direct links to autism and vaccinations. However it was agreed to cover this up the reasoning was that if this was made public it would turn the populace against vaccines. The whole history of vaccines goes back to Louis Pasteur and his germ theory of disease. He was a fraud and a plagiarist and admitted as such prior to his death. Now we are face with a new massive cover-up with the swine flu vaccine. For example an unpublished study in Canada of 12 million people found that getting the seasonal flu vaccine, as recommended by the CDC and NIH doubles one risk of developing the H!N1 infection. The CDC & the FDA are using panic tactics to scare everyone into getting vaccinated. Here are some facts from the New England Journal of Medicine. In a study of 13,217 cases of infection invovling 1,082 hospitaliztions they found 60% of children had underlying medical conditions. 83% of adults had underlying medical conditions. This means that the immune system was compromised. They keep selling the mantra that 36,000 people die from influenza, when the actual number of deaths from influenza in about 1,000 the rest were pnuemonia deaths. The scare tactics and the lies go on and on.

Squalene, billions and billions

Adding "squalene" to the final vaccine product possibly could have helped get the product to vaccination centers quicker, but likely with more side effects from inflammatory reactions attributable to the squalene. They seemed to err on the side of caution, or due to the vigilance of the American public as we are forced to learn quickly.

Adding squalene as an adjuvant means that producers could use less vaccine per dose, due to the boost in effectiveness it provides. But Americans have done their homework, and signaled to the industry that they are reading package inserts.

I am proud of the agencies pushing the vaccines, for it looks as if they have put safety before speed.
Dr. Mercola and Dr. Russell Blaylock deserve credit for having helped the agencies and manufacturers not use squalene for this vaccine this year.. However, some poor children are being used in trials about squalene's effectiveness and side effect rates. As always, safety or not is determined by the presence or absence of immediate side effects, and will not follow the children long enough to determine whether the children are more likely to be autistic, have school problems, or suffer from chronic autoimmune disease as adults.

But once the flu is over, and people have been exposed at school or work, I hope the agencies will quit promoting the vaccine just to get their numbers up.

Billions have gone into planning for the pandemic, and stockpiling Rumfeld's Tamiflu.
I wish we gave mothers stipends to stay home and breast feed their children, conferring their own immunity to the baby for a while. That would also decrease a mother's exposure some, and help shield a baby from a truly dangerous bug going around. I bet other Alternet readers could propose ways to spend the billions given to the CDC and WHO for this.

Of course being Texas, the capital of "private industry always knows best" thinking it was a true cluster fuck.

The "info" websites put up by the state routed you to local sites that routed you back to the state site for more information.

Going to the local site results in no useful info, for no one is listed has vaccine available, and the people answering have no idea if they'll get more.

So back to the website to click "more info" and like magic you were at the state site that referred you back to the local site.

Profit is the absolute worst way to get the "must get things done for the entire public" things in society.

This set up of course is a hold over from the Bush regime.

It'll take a time or two before Team Obama realizes that the "private/public" team up sticks the public with much higher bills and far worse service than public alone.

Also thanks to the general inertia of any large institution, changing the set up takes time. I imagine we'll be back to the safe tried and true public delivery by 2010-11

And if you're a pregnant mom planning to take a swine flu shot, or get one for your children, don't until you’ve heard what these two doctors have to say about the “swine flu vaccines.” Click on the video at the link. Turn up your volume, minimize the presentation, and listen while they talk. America owes these two men a great debt. Almost a quarter million people have visited their site. At the end of the hard copy below the video on Dr. Mercola's site, read what the readers are saying. The men and women who attempted to perpetrate this hoax on the American public are evil. Pure and simple. The vaccines are dangerous. All of them.

I know is flu season BUT!

H1N1 Prevention and or a sign or carring from our government would have been very nice. Now what's up? Everyone seems in a panic! Is that the new vibe?
I saw 60 Minutes on line the other day and what ever his name is, was speaking with the director of the pharma that was suposse to deliver the vaccine blahhhh, blaah. The 60 Minute guy didn't look very happy and seemed very angry asking question about how there is a shortage of the vaccine and why and who?

Are flu vaccines always this polpular? This flu has been around since the 1950 resurrected again in 1977.
My problem here is that, this Flu began on APRIL of 09, why is everyone in the US seem in a panic NOW?
I traveled to the US this summer from China where I live and from the minute I arrived at the airport you could see H1N1 prevention from Chonqqing's international airport to Beijing's. In Beijing even worst there were fever scaners and all employees were wearing surgical masks and people too.

If there was people with a fever they were not allowed to leave and for every flight coming from abroad they will come in all dress like ET was on the airplane and fever scan everyone, one by one if you had a fever you were quarantined for 7 days that was happening this summer in a developing country.

However,In April 2009 the first case originated from Mexico quickly spreading into the US. This summer in the US there was already plenty of Americans with the H1N1. But never once I heard of anyone being quarantined, or schools closing or government agencies doing any prevention at all, not even at State level NOTHING!! DID ANYONE?
The fact is that in the United States, as many as 1 million Americans have had the swine flu so far and 127 people have died from the flu.

So where was the prevention back in April when the flu started? If there was not a vaccine prevention and quarantine was a really good crisses management choice.

Closer to my point, when I arrived at LAX international airport this summer it was like the flue H1N1 didn't even exist business as usual. The US media wasn't talking much about the flu either, obviously it wasn't a big deal THEN!
Since in China it was a big deal, I was puzzled by the US being so careless. I thought before I arrived in LA, that LAX was going to be like Beijing with fever scaners and quarantining people if needed to. Because LAX is an International Airport just like Beijing and there are people from many countries coming and going at every second of the day.

The fact is that anyone could have left the US and gone to another country with a worst kind of illness at this time and or in April and go completly unnotice...
I also asked my friends about the flu and they said that no one really was taking it seriously. So what's the deal?
The federal Government didn't prevent and thanks GOD is just a stupit FLU..it could be way worst..it seems like there's panic and long lines. If you didn't care about yourself back in April why do you now? Cause is the season..well if the season was coming they should've taken better precautions.

I wouldn't trust our broke government and mean broke as not having any money and broke as corrupt. THIS IS FOR THE US GOVERNMENT AND ALL IT'S BRANCHES "ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS'
I wouldn't take the vaccine!

I second the opinion swine flu is hyped and the vaccination might be unnecessary to harmful. But Barbara really is using the swine flu epidemic to promote her anti positive thinking book. And it is a real stretch. Not to mention her facts are wrong, pharma is moving into vaccines as the public becomes more leery of their drugs. Sadly, I am embarrassed that she is a fellow sociologist!

The flu vaccine doesn't really do anything

http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200911/brownlee-h1n1

“The estimate of 50 percent mortality reduction is based on “cohort studies,” which compare death rates in large groups, or cohorts, of people who choose to be vaccinated, against death rates in groups who don’t. But people who choose to be vaccinated may differ in many important respects from people who go unvaccinated—and those differences can influence the chance of death during flu season. Education, lifestyle, income, and many other “confounding” factors can come into play, and as a result, cohort studies are notoriously prone to bias.”

“In 2004, for example, vaccine production fell behind, causing a 40 percent drop in immunization rates. Yet mortality did not rise. In addition, vaccine “mismatches” occurred in 1968 and 1997: in both years, the vaccine that had been produced in the summer protected against one set of viruses, but come winter, a different set was circulating. In effect, nobody was vaccinated. Yet death rates from all causes, including flu and the various illnesses it can exacerbate, did not budge.”

Reasons not to vaccinate

1.The statistics presented by the CDC and other monitoring bodies are
severely distorted: the proven number of deaths due to the actual H1N1
virus is much smaller than previously reported: most cases were of
patients who died of underlying, concomitant conditions, yet were
labeled as H1N1 related deaths. Furthermore, a ;arge number of so-called
H1N1 cases were never actually proven to be such, cases counted even
including phone calls made to doctors by patients worried they might
have the H1N1 virus.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/
10/21/cbsnews_investigates/main5404829.shtml

2. H1N1 is a mild influenza virus, much milder even than regular, yearly
seasonal influenza. The number of deaths is relatively small, compared
to yearly influenza mortality rates.

thimerosal. That vaccine is being used on 250,000 German soldiers.

5. Squalene is highly neurotoxic and causes severe auto-immune
reactions., even deaths.

6. The concentration of squalene in both Focetria and PandemRix is
between half a million to a million times higher than the squalene
contained in the anthrax vaccine administered to US soldiers in 1991,
which was seriously implicated in the Gulf War Syndrome, and from which
hundreds of thousands of soldiers suffered terribly, and many thousands
died.

Ongoing administration of unlisted vaccines in the US military caused
severe reactions and even deaths in thousands of people. The IDF also
recently participated in illegal anthrax vaccine experiments on 716
unsuspecting Israeli soldiers ; administration of toxic substances by
the US and Israeli government is nothing new.

not informed of the potential dangers involved in taking these highly
toxic substances..

10. The combination of squalene and polysorbate 80 in a buffered
solution has been shown to be an excellent anti-fertility combination,
in anti-fertility research performed by scientists for the W.H.O., who
were assigned the job of developing anti-fertility vaccines to reduce
world population. Giving these vaccines to our young population is
tantamount to sterilizing them.

(Fertility Impairing Vaccine And Methods of Use' This application claims
the benefit of U. S. Provisional Application No. 60/070,375, filed
January 2,1998, U. S. Provisional Application No. 60/071,406, filed

11. Giving these vaccines to our population is equivalent to using them
as guinea pigs for the rest of Europe, the world, and specially for
pharmaceutical companies, as they have not yet been properly tested in
children or adults in other countries.

See reference , article #8.

12. Because of the recombinant nature of the H1N1 antigen used in the
manufacture of these vaccines, there is significant risk that the
vaccine itself will lead to a much more serious pandemic, by reassorting
itself with other viruses in the community.

Waiting and Waiting

I want to get both regular and H1N1 vaccinations. I wanted to get them both before upcoming plane flight, but that doesn't look possible now. I haven't even been able to get the regular flu vaccination, it has not yet even been delivered to my doctor or pharmacist, and the few other pharmacies I've checked sell out immediately each time they get a few more shots. You have to be there at some terrible hour in the morning.

This is definitely a market failure. There isn't enough profit in vaccines for big pharma to care enough to get it out there fast. There isn't enough profit in vaccines to make new ones that would cure many diseases in third world countries. Problem is that vaccines are too good. You get a shot and you get immunized. A few bucks and it's over. Drug companies prefer to sell patented pills that you have to take every day for the rest of your life.

I wish all the knee-jerk anti-vaccine people would get a life. Nothing is perfectly safe, especially driving and eating, and even drinking water. The vast majority of physicians, nurses, and people who work in medical research (like me) believe that vaccines have massive benefits that far outweigh the tiny risks.

No one "needs" a vaccine

First, H1N1 is said to be a fairly mild flu compared to the regular flu. Plus, the “cases" are rarely lab-confirmed any more. They are diagnosed by symptoms alone—sometimes even over the phone. Yet, cases are said to be soaring even though the true number of cases is actually unknown. Most people dying from H1N1 had known (or unknown) underlying conditions, or were treated with Tamiflu or other pharmaceuticals.

As for Tamiflu, it has been banned for children in Japan due to severe side effects, including hallucinations. Studies show that it was more likely to cause upper respiratory infections than a placebo:

(www.rocheusa.com/products/tamiflu/pi.pdf) Pg. 12.

There are other more common sense methods to deal with the flu, such as rest, fluids and staying home if you’re sick.

Second, H1N1 vaccines are experimental and barely tested, regardless if they are made similarly to the regular flu vaccine. The mist version of any flu vaccine contains the live virus and can shed, putting others at risk. The duration of H1N1 virus shedding is unknown.

(The following link has a space between the words "vaccines/" and "vaccines/" because alternet won't post it otherwise. So, delete that space): www.fda.gov/downloads/biologicsbloodvaccines/ vaccines/approvedproducts/ucm182406.pdf Pg.20

The injectable vaccines have thimerosal, a mercury derivative (along with other toxic ingredients). Mercury-free pediatric vaccines may be available if you ask for them. Some countries are using Pandemrix, an H1N1 vaccine containing an adjuvant called squalene, which is the subject of much controversy. We may use that at some point, too.

Further, pharmaceutical companies are not held liable in case of injury or death and no vaccine is guaranteed to work. For more info on swine flu and vaccines: (www.nvic.org).

All vaccines carry the risk of serious side effects, including death, and none are guaranteed to work.

Mother Nature's Flu Protection

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
See a summary of H1N1 flu protection from D at GoodSchoolFood.org, the upper left corner.

Here’s more info since that article was posted, minus the URLs, which this site won’t allow.

Regarding the H1N1 pandemic, a recent Emory University meta analysis found evidence that D not only prevents but treats flu.

Another recent study found that the proper functioning of the "innate" 60 million-year-old immune system in primates-- which recognizes anything that doesn't belong -- requires vitamin D to activate it. (This is different from our more “recent” antibody system, which requires that a person has survived a prior exposure to a particular microbe.)

Dr. Norris Glick, MD, reported that a long-term care facility in Wisconsin, which serves about 275 people with developmental disabilities, had good results from using vitamin D. They have about 800 on the staff. For several years, the residents’ vitamin D levels have been kept high. This June, two residents developed flu symptoms and had positive tests for H1N1: one person was a long-term resident; the other had recently been transferred there already infected with H1N1. Meanwhile, 60 staff members developed flu symptoms or were actually documented to have H1N1. Dr. John Cannell, of the Vitamin D Council, commented:
Less than 1% -- 0.73% -- of residents got H1N1, as compared to 7.5% of the staff. This 10-fold difference is statistically significant.

US News & World Report points out that experts such as Dr. Michael Holick say adults need about 2000 IU a day and children 1000 IU. A comment on that article says that Kaiser HMO aims for blood levels between 40 and 70 ng/ml (nanograms per milliliter); we doubt if even 20% of children have that high a level.

Influenza is just one of the many seasonal infections sensitive to the broad spectrum anti-microbial peptides (AMP) that vitamin D up-regulates. Others include: invasive pneumococcal disease, meningococcal disease, and group A streptococcal diseases.

Most people still operate on outdated notions that it’s easy to overdose on D. To see how high a dose it actually takes to reach toxicity, see Dr. Heany’s chart, slide 45, at: grassrootshealth.org

Dr. Hollis’ chart of optimum levels of D is also found at: grassrootshealth.net

Parents need to know all this because Dr. Michal Melamed’s recent study found that 70 percent of American children are below optimum levels of D. Why? Because children eat less fish, use sunscreen more, and play indoors more (video games).

Almost 90 percent of black children and 80 percent of Hispanic children in that age group could be vitamin D deficient.

In order to get 2000 IU per day from food you would need to eat 6 servings of salmon, or 10 servings of tuna, or drink 20 glasses of fortified milk every day.

When a sub-contractor fails to meet a deadline, there is usually a clause in the contract that stipulates huge fines.
I assume that wasn't done in this case.
If so, it is still the fault of the government that the vaccine is not available.

Scarcity breeds fear in the Sheeple

The propaganda fear mongering of the daily announcement that there is not enough flu vaccine to go around and that it will be delayed make the Sheeple scared!

Sheeple are afraid that they won’t get something that someone else is getting even though they are uneducated as to what that something is.

I want a count as to how many sheeple that got the flu vaccinations ened up with the flu. So far, among my FB contacts everyone that got the vaccination got the flu. But do the corporate controlled news agencies report the number of people getting the flu who had the vaccination? NO. That would undermine the profits of the big pharma’s.

Have you read the news from other countries about H1N1 and the vaccinations? Very interesting indeed. Their findings contradict USA government controlled news.

what you need is a bed, plenty of fluid and rest.

"No Such Thing as a Free Flu Shot"

Posted by: plantland on Nov 4, 2009 8:26 AM

Posted by: plantland on Nov 4, 2009 1:26 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]

This isn't easy to watch, as it goes on for 1 hour - and its in Spanish with English subtitles, and she doesn't half go on....

However, the content and its implications should scare the shit out of you.

If it doesn't you haven't been paying attention.

Sure it sounds crazy that "they" really are trying to "solve" the overpopulation problem like - NOW - and kill Several Billion People over the Next Few Months - but this Girl Is Telling The Truth. This is Not out of Some Science Fiction Film - It is Real, Here and NOW

Less Respect for Barbara With Every Article I read

10/21/cbsnews_investigates/main5404829.shtml

2. H1N1 is a mild influenza virus, much milder even than regular, yearly
seasonal influenza. The number of deaths is relatively small, compared
to yearly influenza mortality rates.

catastrophe. The flu season already peaked in the USA.

7. The unnecessary H1N1 vaccination campaign of 1976 caused many cases
of Guillain-Barre, some of them permanent. Just as today, people were
not informed of the potential dangers involved in taking these highly
toxic substances..

9. The only studies done with Focetria, containing the MARKETABLE
PRODUCT, were on a total of 132 people.

January 15,1998).

Scarcity Breeds Fear among the Sheeple!
