What Really Causes Autism? Thousands of Parents Blame Vaccines, and Are Taking on the Medical Establishment

"There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumb-ass kids can't compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks …to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons," actor and comedian Denis Leary controversially argued with patented flippancy in a chapter called "Autism Shmautism" from his 2008 book Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid. "I don't give a shit what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you -- yer kid is NOT autistic. He's just stupid. Or lazy. Or both."
That explosive insult, intensified by Leary's decision to pen his riotous book under the assumptive moniker "Dr. Denis Leary," is just one of many bombs that has rocked either side of autism's increasingly contentious divide. That currently includes, on one side, scientists and researchers hard at work on discovering the causes of the escalating neurological and developmental disorder, which according to a recent Cambridge University study could affect one in every 64 children. Complicating those efforts is the fact that autism's far-ranging spectrum of psychological conditions has only widened with time, an increase in diagnosis, awareness and the overall environmental toxicity of our lives which we take for granted.
But Leary's crack also roiled the other side of autism's battlefield. It's commandeered by distraught parents of autistic children, who have mobilized their frustration with a medical and pharmaceutical establishment increasingly short on definitive answers but seemingly long on unnecessary pharmaceuticals and inflammatory theories. Along the way, it has become a critical mass movement aimed at injecting major amounts of anecdotal evidence into what before was almost purely a psychiatric or scientific debate.
As a result, the conflict over autism has come to resemble autism itself: A connectivity disorder, fraught with crossed neurological wiring, threatening to spark into mass distraction.
Throwing fuel onto that already considerable fire is the newfound publicity parents have received thanks to the help of celebrities like Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey, who helped found Generation Rescue, a research, treatment and public relations program that has, among other things, launched a full-frontal assault on what it argues is too many toxic vaccines given to too many children in their first few vulnerable years of life. And they're not alone: From Oprah Winfrey and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to doctors and researchers, Generation Rescue and other organizations, including the Coalition for SafeMinds, a private non-profit investigating the dangers of mercury and thimerosal in medical products and vaccines, are charging into the breach with facts and scores of studies.
"There's no queston that, along with clean water, vaccines are the primary public healthy victory -- miracle really -- of the last 75 years," explained pediatrician Dr. Harvey Karp to AlterNet by phone.
Karp speaks with authority from either side of the autism divide: An assistant professor of pediatrics at the UCLA School of Medicine, he is also probably the most widely read pediatrician in America, thanks to his successful books The Happiest Baby on the Block and The Happiest Toddler on the Block. And as a pediatrician to celebrities like Madonna and more, he's not lacking in credibility when it comes to publicity either. But he's not a fan of justifiably distressed parents of autistic children railing against the scientific record, such as it is.
"To look at vaccines as anything other than a victory is twisting the truth," he added. "That is not to say that we don't have to alter them regularly, but we're not just giving shots to make more money. We'd make more money if we didn't give them. What has happened is that, in the autism debate, anecdote has replaced science in parents' minds. And that's easy when a child gets a vaccine and then suddenly, they're not normal anymore. But you need science to make intuition and anecdote work, and science has demonstrated that vaccines aren't related to autism."

Socalled neutral doctor saying if we" donot give vaccines we will make more money" is wrong. Psychiatrists make more money out of Autism and also other related disorders.

What is the necessity for vaccine for measles,Flu and host of other disceases? Triple antigen vaccine. Is it safe? Is it necessary? The vaccine lobby must give a careful answer.

Why not look at Africa or ME where this syndrome doesn't exist? Can't we find the clue there?

Claims and conclusions are made that aren't supported by the data in the studies - but it's the claims that are reported.
The study most often cited as proving that there's no connection between autism and vaccinations disincluded children with autism! Thimerosol Study Deeply Flawed—How Study Results Are Manipulated
Data taken from the JAMA of infectious disease deaths over most of the 20th century show that little, if any, credit for lowering such deaths belongs to vaccinations: Childhood Vaccinations Hoax - Not Effective and at Worst, Harmful
The things that don't seem to get mentioned, as a rule, in the autism debate (at least, in most mainstream media and not in relation to autism): The Elephants in the Autism Room—Big Pharma Money and Sudden Onset

There is growing evidence that during its roughly 10-month gestation, the fetus of mothers reared in 'industrialized" countries is swimming in a pool of nutrients infected with carcinogens, neurotoxins, and various other disrupters. These chemicals enter the mother's body not only through some of the foods she eats, but also from the personal-care products (cosmetics and shampoos and perfumes and ...), household cleaners she uses, and her generally polluted environment. For example, the Red Cross discovered the presence of roughly 200 chemicals, some 180 of which were "dangerous" (carcinogens, neurotoxins (eg: lead), disrupters, etc) in the blood of umbilical cords. To doubt that these toxic pools are only co-incidental with the increase in ADHD, Autism, behavioural disorders, etc., is to live in a dream. However, it seems that the problem is not the medical establishment.
Rather, it is the FDA and the EPA who should be held fully accountable for allowing these chemicals to be used by so-called self-regulated food, drug, and cosmetics industries. These governmental bodies must be subject to a complete house-cleaning ... lest we follow the Romans' lead and, like the Romans did with lead poisoning, induce our own demise with our own variation of 'in-toxification.'

I have had measles twice & it is awful. I had my kids vaccinated to avoid this & the Mumps which I also have had. One of my friends recently spent a year struggling to fight off whooping cough & its after-effects.
The onset of Autism often coincides with the vaccination programme, but is not caused by it.

I remember the horror of having all my symptoms diagnosed as separate disorders. Unfortunately, even if I could have been properly diagnosed the result would likely have been the same. Prescription of nasty chemicals by practitioners who had no idea what the long-term neurological effects would be.
People can make inflammatory remarks all they want, but when a child's communication is over 90% nonverbal from birth there is something wrong that has nothing do with parenting.
Dr. Hong's claim that many who have Reactive Attachment Disorder are being misdiagnosed with Autism is not without merit. When inexperienced clinicians attempt to properly diagnose conditions as complex as developmental disorders, many mistakes will happen.
Some days I feel blessed to not have the most severe form of Autism, other days I wish I did. Working diligently to maintain interpersonal relationships, especially those with the opposite sex, and consistently failing makes you feel like twice run over feces.

All of the above and more disrupt, in varying degrees, the incarnational process. The result is that many children, and subsequently many adults, suffer from varying degrees of spiritual, emotional/psychological, and, in severe cases, physical dislocation. This is the inability to connect fully with their bodies, with others, and with the world around them, i.e., dys-incarnation. It and the unenlightened treatment of it result in a myriad of new diseases, both psychological and physical, that we find plaguing humanity and baffling researchers today who, for the most part, only intensify and perpetuate the problem.

He got brain injury after the shot. He got a fever of 104 and had high pitched screaming for 24 hours after the DPT shot. He is now an adult, and has no hope of ever working, marrying, going to college, having a career, or enjoying the sight of a sunset or a flower. He has severe disabilities, autism, and he is legally blind from the brain injury I believe was caused by the vaccine.
At the end of the day I fully believe the DPT vaccine ruined his life, and mine. I know my child. I have photos of him before the shot, and he was developing normally and well. I believe I was lied to, and I warn parents to think twice, and then think once again, before letting their children get vaccines. I don't believe they have been safe, and the risks are too great. I believe the pharmaceutical companies lie, and they risk the health of our children for their own profits.

A good friend of mine, has a kid who is a bit weird. But both my friend and the kid's mother are a bit weird.
So when the kid was young, they were both obsessed with his weirdness.
I met the kid several times, and he was really friendly to me, just a little bit too demanding of my attention, insisting that I come and play computer games with him etc. I thought his behaviour was completely acceptable, and that he was very highly intelligent.
But his parents insisted he was weird and insisted on a medical diagnosis and treatment. I told them I thought they were crazy, and that there son was fine - just rather different to most people - but very highly intelligent. I said - its you the parents that have the problem - just accept that you have got a very clever little boy who is a bit shy with some people.
So several years later when he gets to the age of 14, he not only starts of his own computer business, but also comes home with a most beautiful girlfriend.
Meanwhile, his parents marriage falls apart and they split up.
Now at the age of 18, he has been offerred a place at a top university.
The kid's a bloody genius, but has had to live with the label his parents and the medical authorities stuck on him when he was young
He has been classed as Autistic
He apparently has Asperger's Syndrome
Who's the one with the problem?
Tony

Not only do these parents expose their children to these diseases unnecessarily, they also make it more and more likely that epidemics of these diseases will occur once more in this country, a situation that is completely avoidable.
These parents are the same people who criticize right-wingers because they don't know enough science to understand the threat of global warming. Yes, there is most likely a lot more autism now and definitely a lot more diagnoses of the condition than ever before. I believe there is beginning to be a strong connection between this situation and the chemical loading that is in every child's body even before they are born. This environmental connection is a threat to all of us, not just the children. I believe they are a canary in the coal mine to let us know that our chemical-laden processed foods are poisoning us all. Do not blame vaccinations for this situation.

2)The number of vaccines is growing. How can a tiny little body be injected with numerous "diseases" and then we expect the baby's immune system to not go in hyperdrive? Big Pharma.
3) The environment must play a role as well. I agree that we should be holding the FDA and EPA accountable for their lack of regulation, or care for that matter. It's all about who gets paid and the money, not moral responsibility.

But I had very few vaccinations as a child, because very few had actually been invented.
Partially as a result, and also because I lived in a very heavily polluted working class town, I had a whole host of serious childhood diseases and was very ill, until the age of about 8.
But I survived them all, and since then have had remarkably good health.
I suspect this may well be because of the natural immunity, that having all these diseases built up in my own immune system.
I am now extremely suspicious of the medical profession and pharmaceutical companies. Whilst my own children have had all normal vaccinations without any adverse effect, when/if the time comes for them to have their own children, I would not automatically advise them to have their own children vaccinated for everything available and recommended, but to find out all information from both sides of the arguments and make the decision for themselves.
I am not convinced that all vaccinations are safe, and in some cases the risk of serious side effects may outweigh the risk of actually having some (but not all) of the diseases.
Personally, I remember having whooping cough, scarlet fever, bronchitus, measles, mumps, chicken pox, tonsillitus (tonsills removed) and appendicitus (appendix removed) and there may well have been others. My vaccinated kids have had none of these, except maybe a mild skin rash which cleared up without treatment.

Measles.
Smallpox.
and especially polio.
Quick. Someone send me grant money for my vaccines-lead-to-amnesia study.
Or should I, like many of you, just post these random ruminations on some website devoted to quackery and the reduction of the planetary human* burden?
*I really do suspect the "overpopulation" crowd are the ones pushing you to not get your kids vaccinated. I mean, do the math!

The increase in Asthma is now such, that in any class there is likely to be several kids taking inhalers that they are heavily reliant on.
What has caused this enormous increase? It most certainly is not air pollution because the quality of air in the UK has improved dramatically. When I was a kid, all the birds were the same colour - that of coal dust.
Maybe part of the problem is lower quality food, but even this seems unlikely as if anything food additives have been significantly reduced, such that many foods "go off" much more quickly than they did 50 years ago.
The only thing that has obviously increased dramatically is the use of vaccines and prescribed drugs.
There has also apparently been a large increase in very serious brain damage in children. I personally know of numerous cases of very severely disabled children requiring virtually full time nursing care. The incidence of this seemed very much lower when I was a child, though I have no figures to prove it. The same applies to cancer. It seemed very much rarer than it is now, yet 50 years ago, letting off nuclear bombs in the atmosphere was a regular event, and the vast majority of people smoked heavily unfiltered cigarettes.
As a society as a whole, our health appears to have declined significantly. I think there is a strong correlation with the profits of pharmaceutical companies. I no longer think they put human health first, but massive profits. The iller you are, the more money they make.
Tony

This article is a model of journalism--a precious jewel in today's culture. Thank you so much for the new information, but especially for the author's rigorous research and follow-through. Thanks again for reminding us that Autism is a very complicated disorder, and we need to use our best minds and best science to tackle it.
Are we, as Americans, ready to face the challenge of defeating this disease, or are we gonna fall into the blame-others-first mentality that has hamstrung us for the past decade? Are we gonna be willing to listen to each other carefully, and discuss respectfully, but yet yield to science when it makes inroads?
I dearly hope so...

Or even go back 100 years ago, when nothing could be done to prevent such dread childhood diseases as pertussis (whooping cough) and diptheria.
We have forgotten how bad our ancestors had it--health-wise-- back in those so-called "idyllic" days.

Rather than pick on the vaccine makers who provide a REAL TANGIBLE BENEFIT TO MILLIONS who do not show signs of autism, perhaps it makes more sense for doctors to better advise parents of the risk factors. Doctors would do well to know the autism rates in their community, and parents would do well to consider their own family history.
Much of the debate over autism also centers around the ages of innoculation. People with higher risk factors would be well advised to wait until years later, after much of the critical development in that part of the brain is already well set.
I'm in no way defending the drug makers for pushing vaccinations all willy-nilly, but at some point people - including doctors - need to start taking some responsibility for their own actions and stop trusting the status quo for innoculation schedules as ok.

Autism rates are rising, this is understood. Many felt that better reporting of kids otherwise classified as some form of 'retarded' was the reason but just talk to the pediatric neurologists and they will tell you different. Hell, ask the school administrators.
In classic cases (prior to the 1980s) it was almost always the first born son who was at risk. My second born son, born 14 months after my first child, developed autism. Both received the same set of shots to the best of my research. My first son is studying computer science engineering at Ohio State, my younger son is waiting to be placed in a job program.
My autistic son also has Crohn's disease. For some reason science has yet to explain, these kids also seem more susceptible to fall prey to gastrointestinal disorders.
There was no previous family history of anything like autism going back four generations on both sides. None.
It is easy to blame the vaccines. In truth, something in one of the vaccines, otherwise benign, may trigger the onset of autism in kids who are carrying around environmental waste byproducts (as an earlier poster wrote) in their system received through their mother. This is, I think, the best explanation - the root is something environmental - not genetic.
In fact, I hope those of you who bandy about the idea of genetic markers never face having in laws who are about to start a family insist you, your wife and autistic son submit to a full blood analysis so they can be assured they will have a 'normal' child and not a freak like yours.
And speaking of 'freak' reactions, I was turned off early from the autism advocacy movement because so many of the parents had made it their life's work to find some 'cure' to make their children 'normal' again. They seemed unable to accept their child for what they were and love them for what they were. And a whole cottage industry of quackery rose up to give these parents fall hopes while draining their bank accounts.
I don't know what the answer is. I believe that because it is probably the result of ingesting the byproducts of our modern age that vested interests will make sure the cause is never found. I chose a long time to deal with my son for what he is - not mourn for what he could have been.
But for those that do not have an autistic son or daughter you have no idea what parents have to go through to fight the ignorance and bigotry of modern society to get your child even a modicum of therapy, education and respect. This is real, not some kind of fucking dodge to get a easy government check, believe me. I know of no one who has an easy work-free life because they got 'lucky' to have an autistic child. Nor is it some kind of 'liberal plot' either. These kids are all of our kids and they can be productive members of our society if we would accept them for what they are.
I wish we lived in a civilized country but we do not. The parents of autistic kids are largely on their own to fight for what their kids need to have a basic existence. There was an Army recruiter who recruited an autistic kid and it took serious congressional intervention to get him back to his parents. That incident speaks volumes for basic American humanity in a nation of Denis Leary's.

The children diagnosed with Asperger's disorder were born that way. Draw whatever conclusions you want from that observation.
Most of the parents of autistic children chose to space out the vaccinations on their subsequent children, the result being that the subsequent children did not become autistic.
My personal feeling is that autism runs in families, in the sense that the immune system will freak out when overly-stressed at a tender age when the brain is still forming, causing damage in the areas that are currently forming as a toddler: Speech, communication, coordination, and the ability to read faces and social cues.
This of course is only my personal opinion, formed after years of meeting with upset and tearful parents bringing in children who are challenging to raise no matter how great the family is.
Yes, vaccines have prevented many disabling and deadly diseases, but to shoot up toddlers with more than one vaccine at a time (DPT and MMR are two that are problematic) is irresponsible and should not be done to any child who is still forming neurological connections in their brain.
As for Denis Leary, he was funny a long time ago, but is now just another bitter person trying to sell books by being a mean-spirited soul. He should be singing his "I'm An Asshole" song now.

Doesn't anyone see a connection between what is consumed and the state of one's health?
We are not simply mind and body. We are a whole comprised of both mind and body. They are connected. What you do to one, you do to the other. Is this so difficult to understand?
When you eat GARBAGE - you ARE garbage - your health is garbage. And that means the mind as well as the body.
There are thousands and thousands of chemicals now ingested on a daily basis by the average American. Most of these chemicals haven't been tested alone - never mind the synergystic effect: what happens when all of these chemicals are mixed together?
Does it take a genius to understand that these can have a disastrous effect on both the mind and the body? Or have people been so dumbed down by their food that they can no longer think straight?

There are so many stories about children's adverse reactions to multiple vaccines that there must be a connection. I do not believe the studies because of who funds them. And I advise people to read as much as possible in order to find some truths to this problem. I believe a genetic disposition will not allow some kids to fight off the toxins in our environment; we all have hundreds of chemicals in our bodies, thanks to a spineless corrupt Congress that allows big Pharma and big business to pollute everything.

"In 1997, a US congressman from New Jersey inserted into a funding bill a provision that gave the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) two years to measure levels of mercury in all products under its jurisdiction, and release its findings to Congress and the public. The FDA's analysis revealed that because several new vaccines were added to the immunization schedule after 1988, some infants could be exposed to as much as 187.5 micrograms of ethylmercury by the time they were 6 months old--if every dose of Hib, hepatitis B, and DTaP contained thimerosal.
Based on this new finding, says [UC-San Francisco medical anthropologist Sharon] Kaufman, leading vaccine experts began to investigate the possibility that mercury in vaccines was putting kids at risk. While the ethylmercury levels exceeded the federal safety guidelines for methylmercury, which gains toxicity as it accumulates through the food chain, no guidelines existed for ethylmercury at the time. Its toxicity was largely unknown; however, there was evidence that very high doses of ethylmercury could cause neurological damage. It was also known that methylmercury can cause subtle neurological effects in infants born to mothers who eat large amounts of fish and whale meat. Studies have since shown that ethylmercury is eliminated much faster than methylmercury and is unlikely to accumulate. But in 1999, no one knew what dose to consider safe for the developing brain.
Given the uncertainty about ethylmercury's toxicity, Neal Halsey, director of the Institute for Vaccine Safety at Johns Hopkins University, urged vaccine policymakers at the CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to remove thimerosal from vaccines as a precautionary measure and to maintain public confidence in their safety. The agencies agreed, and vaccine manufacturers responded quickly; by March 2001, no children's vaccines contained thimerosal.
Anticipating the FDA's release of its findings, the AAP issued a statement explaining its decision as an effort to minimize children's exposure to mercury, asserting that "current levels of thimerosal will not hurt children, but reducing those levels will make safe vaccines even safer". Unfortunately, Kaufman says, "rather than reassuring parents, the statement fueled public fears and prompted all sorts of questions."
To Halsey, one of the most respected figures in the vaccine world, simply ignoring the FDA's findings was not an option. He hoped the rapid response would demonstrate the government's "commitment to provide the safest vaccines possible". But it was too late for reassurances. Several months later, Medical Hypotheses--an unconventional journal that welcomes "even probably untrue papers"--received and later published a purely speculative article called "Autism: a novel form of mercury poisoning". Two of the authors, Sallie Bernard, a marketing consultant, and Lyn Redwood, a nurse, had just launched the parents' advocacy group SafeMinds to promote their thimerosal hypothesis. Although their now debunked theory appeared in a journal that openly eschews peer review and evidence-based observations, several parent advocacy groups still cite it as evidence that mercury in vaccines causes autism."
Trust and accountability in the vaccine-autism wars.

The medical establishment lost me a long time ago, except for a couple small injuries. How could mercury poisoning be a good thing? How could you defend it? How can this go on and on so damn long at such a huge cost? It's been 60 years. Noone really paid attention to the results of the experiment. Noone ever compensated me or my family for our trauma and the effects on my life,(which are exacerbated by exposures to pesticides and solvent fumes, also largely denied by the establishment). The establishment pretends to be paying attention to the effects of vaccination and pesticides, etc. Moreso, they seem to be caught up in the excitement that they had found an answer to the problems of plagues and "pests." Instead of looking at the the effects of these toxic "solutions" and creating something better, they just rest on their laurels and deny the obvious at our expense. They find causation usually where they have been trained to look for it. An outbreak of respiratory distress and allergies in the spring? Who considers it is the time of year when the lawn care applicators are all over spraying 2,4-D and other herbicides with serious respiratory and neurological effects (not to mention many other effects)? The information is in the scientific literature. The power of the chemical and pharmaceutical corporations allied with our misplaced trust in old, flawed science is killing and maiming people and life on earth. What we have is not a sustainable, healthy model, especially when applied so liberally.

This is a prime example of what is wrong with letting capitalism be your doctor. We under-treat those without insurance and we overtreat those with insurance. Karp is clearly lying when he says that money isn’t made from vaccinations. Of course it is. The pharmaceutical industry makes money from vaccinations, the clinic or hospital makes from vaccinations and the administering doctor makes money from vaccinations. Even the insurance company makes money from the vaccinations because the insurance company simply passes on the cost of paying vaccination claims onto the insured with a substantial profit markup.
The costs of these vaccines are passed onto the patients and their parents. However, it is not only the financial cost. It also appears that it may be the costs of autism and other ‘side-effects’ of these superfluous vaccines (25 or so superfluous vaccines that no other country on Earth administers to its children; you know, like those other countries that all score better on every health indicator). The same thing is going on with x-rays and cat scans and MRIs and ultra sounds (and likely the additional ‘screenings’ for autism that Obama is proposing). If we have no medical insurance we are being dumped. If we have medical insurance we are being poked, prodded, diagnosed, and injected as much as possible to line the pockets of the medical industrial complex.
An earlier comment by heid provides some of the specifics of how statistical studies that say very little are spun into absolute truths that show how wonderful our medical industrial complex is and how stupid its critics are. It is all simply PR spin.

Apparently, removing thimerosal from vaccines (more or less) produced no decrease in new cases of autism: that's pretty conclusive. But it doesn't change the reality that injecting toddlers with mercury, in any form, was both stupid and profoundly irresponsible. The extreme toxicity of mercury is beyond dispute, and quibbles about the form deserve only a snicker.
It was irresponsible not only because of possible harm to the children, but also because it justified distrust in the vaccines themselves (I know highly trained medical personnel who won't vaccinate their children.) The whole controversy is a disaster in itself, and it results from that initial bad decision (motivated by greed, as another commenter mentioned.)
I've also read articles by RFK Jr. on the issue. He documents conscious efforts at a coverup, in the CDC. Regardless of the merits of the thimerosal connection, that's horrifying - and a good reason for ordinary people to go on looking for "anecdotal" evidence.
It's also alarming that we're still not certain whether there's a real increase in autism. My wife teaches in a special-needs classroom: trust me, there's nothing subtle about full-blown autism. It should be easy to tell whether it has increased, regardless of the "spectrum" disorders. If we don't know, it's because the funders don't want us to know. So it's back to "anecdotal" evidence - a term used to discredit people who do research the "official" sources refuse to do.

I remember reading an article on autism while I was (ironically) waiting for an appt in a doctor's office. The lady in question in the article, had just had her child immunized with the mmr shot and several weeks later, her child started exhibiting autistic behavioral symptoms. Subsequently, she took her child to the doctor who told her, tough sh** or words to that effect, saying that there was nothing to be done as there was no cure for autism. Being a fighter and supreme lover of her child, she was not willing to give up. She then immersed herself in research on the subject. Because of her research she decided to start testing dietary elements of her child's diet, selectively removing certain foods from the child's diet. When she removed milk, her child show a major response, but not a complete recovery from the symptoms. When she then also removed wheat, her child's autistic behavior completely stopped and now the child is growing up as a 'normal' child without any of the symptoms of autism.
Our current medicine can be blamed on both pharma companies and unfortunately ourselves! We want to be cured and we want it right now. Thus we have what I call McDonald's medicine as it is the same as fast foods. The doctor tends to spend far less time with the patient and instead attempts to treat the symptoms as easily and quickly as possible. The patient then, instead of taking the time to do what is necessary (diet, exercise etc) chooses to take a pill with the hope that this will cure them. Thus we have the current health care that is prevalent in this country.
Namaste,
tchii

Compared to thirty years ago we have an epidemic of obese children who now have adult onset diabetes. Something tells me that diet before and after birth plays a huge role in the increase of autism.

The American diet - called S.A.D. (standard American diet) - is APPALLING! If you shop in the supermarket and think you're eating real food...well, you're NOT!
What is in the supermarket is FAKE. Frankenfood. Genetically Modified. Filled with chemicals and garbage that you have no business consuming.
For goodness sake, guys...there are people who care more about what gas they put in their cars than they do about what they put in their mouths.
It's horrible!

One fact remains, every adult (inoculated or not) who considers themselves to be 'informed' and willingly withholds vaccines from their children is gambling with the health and potentially the life of that child.
When big pharma does that it's rightly considered immoral and illegal, but apparently when these idiots do it, it's moral superiority.

How sad but true. When asked how best the public can avoid being stricken by disease, like the swine flu, you never hear the medical "experts" state that proper diet has a dramatic effect on building immunity and warding off disease. Anyone with a lick of sense would know that, but all the "experts" ever tell you is to wash your hands and take your vaccine.
In other words, it's okay to keep eating your sugar-laden, chemically jacked-up, refined and processed GMO junk food -- as long as you take Big Pharma's magic bullets.
Vaccines, drugs and radiation are the cornerstone of "sick care" and the reason it's a failed system no matter how much money we throw at it.
If you believe the bullshit that quacks like Dr. Karp spew, you WILL end up being a medical statistic.
"Drug medications consists in employing, as remedies for disease, those things which produce disease in well persons. All are incompatible with vital matter; all produce disease when brought in contact in any manner with the living; all are poisons." -- R.T. TraIl, M.D., in a two and a half hour lecture to members of congress and the medical profession, delivered at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C.

Autism is a behavioral syndrome, actually a cultural syndrome. Not all people with ASD have underlying organic or neurologic problems, but that majority which does, have acquired them prenatally. Its a *developmental* behavioral syndrome. Its very rare that postnatal events can be directly linked to a person's ASD. The "diagnosis" of this behavioral syndrome is achieved by *behavioral* observations, by *behavioral* inventories, etc. Since human behavior is largely an end product of socialization, ie enculturation, *learning*, then all behavioral syndrome outcomes are partially resultant from socialization input, have some component of socialization input. So, if there's a less than culturally desirable outcome, we have to look the entire environmental context, total ecology of ASD, including cultural & behavioral context, socialization practices and beliefs, etc. Funny, cause the only *proven* interventions for ASD, that "work" >50% of the time, are behavioral, so far. Funny how FAS & FAE morphed into ARNDs (alcohol related neurologic deficits), a "spectrum" disorder, just like ASD.
The Jim and Jenny show is just that, about the normal adults and their power brokerage, their needs, not the person with ASD. Same is true of most other groups that claim to "speak" for people with ASD. When people with ASD speak for themselves, the expressed needs are typically very different than promoted by these politically motivated "advocacy" movements, "support and information" gatherings of "unaffected" adults. Sagan was correct about science, education and the public. It will be very difficult to sort out the various epigenetic environmental events, which can be multigenerational, and socialization events that influence outcomes for ASD, ie, the things we can actually control, with non-ASD adult cult polity spewing pseudoscience, and selling dangerous, even lethal, ineffective snake oil to frantic families. Of course, traditional psychiatry needs to stop promoting harmful, even lethal, "no indications", no benefit interventions as well. Being a parent to ASD can actually be a joy, if that can be allowed.

Through a combination of clean water, improved public sanitation, ample, pre-industrial food, and the immune lessons learned from contact with infectious agents and passed on generationally, we were developing a real herd immunity that never needs boosting.
Vaccines were unnecessary. An immune system thousands of years in the making was on the job.
Vaccines may or may not help; they certainly can harm. Even if we just note the vaccine makers' own list of side effects, contraindications, and reported adverse reactions, including some deaths, it's clear that vaccines regularly violate the first law of medicine.
Some kids are clearly harmed.
It's not as exciting, heroic, or profitable to eliminate diseases such as measles or polio by making sure that your poorest citizens have a healthy standard of living; or preventing industries from poisoning the environment; or teaching people how to eat; or learning from the case histories of those who encountered a disease and just healed, but it was working.

Vaccines have done much good in the PAST, but they are NOW given so often, and so early in a child's life that they have become the leading suspect in a new epidemic: Autism.
The terrible truth is that Autism is THE epidemic of our generation. We simply cannot rule out the nature, composition and frequency of the vaccines we give brand new babies. And as much as the drug companies would love to shut down this debate (as evidenced by the flurry of their paid-to-post bloggers on this site), anyone who does not demand further study of this connection is not taking the welfare of children seriously.

But, I don't see how so many here completely and utterly dismiss this as having no worth whatsoever. If it only happened once or twice, then it'd be another matter.
My real feeling about the anecdotal autism evidence reminds me of a health problem that I had:
I slept on a futon mattress on the floor for about a year. Somewhere along the way, I started having all sorts of weird symptoms; they were frightening, to be honest . . . things like a 'cloudy brain' sensation. I saw many doctors who could tell me nothing. Then I finally turned over the futon mattress and it was covered in mold on the bottom. I stopped sleeping on it, of course, but in the meantime went to see an allergy/asthma doctor. He told me there was no scientific evidence to support mold causing any illness and dismissed everything I had to say. My opinion of this episode was that I didn't need to wait on science to confirm what I knew. After not sleeping on the thing for a few months, the symptoms went away.
It's anecdotal, I'm aware, but there's no real convincing me otherwise. Experiential knowledge does count for something.

There are, however, high rates of C section and forceps birth among autistics of my generation ( I'm 48 ).
While I don't discount the idea that vaccines may cause autism in some cases, I believe there are many factors at play. Keep an open mind. Treat each person as an individual case.
To those parents who worry for their child's future- I was told that I'd never be anything; that I'd have to be institutionalised and drugged.
I'm now an internationally published author and musician with sixteen books and nine CDs of music listed on amazon.com. I've also got a sci-fi film and two documentaries in pre-production. I'm married and I travel the world, performing my music and speaking about the gifts I've been given. I don't have an outward appearance of being different and I've learned to affect normal- which puts people who are frightened of strangeness at ease.
Anything is possible.
Doctors, psychiatrists and psychologists can't predict any child's future. The future hasn't been written yet.

As a result of reading this article, I did a little research with regards to the vaccinations routinely given to babies in the UK. I am totally shocked about the enormous increase in vaccinations since our children were babies.
I suggest Pregnant Women also read about the evidence claimed linking Vaccines with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
A poster just claimed 3 children in 100 die from vaccinations. I didn't believe the rate could be anything like that high, but now I'm not so sure, because the vast majority of childhood deaths will not be recorded as having any connection to vaccination, and actually its not the deaths themselves (though terrible) that are the major problem, but the alleged life long serious disabilities.
It is simply untrue what the authorities have claimed that science has proved that vaccinations are safe. What is extremely difficult to evaluate is what the risk actually is, compared to the risk of not having your child vaccinated.
Some of these vaccinations may have been proven to be both safe and necessary, whilst others may be exceedngly dangerous. I can understand the point of view of both sides of the argument. The main problem is that clear risk data is not available, and that the Medical Profession, The Pharmaceutical Industry and The Government are simply not telling the Full Truth.
Why does Sweden, Norway and Japan have much lower infant mortality rates than other Western Countries. Do these countries have different vaccination schedules, more stringent testing of content, or anything else significant that is different?
Bias can always be introduced by anyone given an objective to prove a particular case. Statistics can "prove" what people want to be "proved". But has anyone objectively evaluated all the available information without a pre-determined agenda?

My wife has worked for 20 years in a school for children who are, unfortunately for them, the results of both genetically and medically induced challenges. Most folks do not believe that diet really has anything to do with a causative factor towards many of these problems.
We are bombarded with TV adds and advertising which really is part of the problem. We go to the supermarkets and buy our food, believing that we are getting the very best that there is to offer. Little realising that much of the vegetable type foods were are getting have been grown on land which is quite divested of many of the necessary trace elements that are needed to grow fully nutritious plants.
Nature has a way of destroying unhealthy plants. Unfortunately, the $$$ factor is more important than healthy food. Nature uses some very hard working creatures to work at keeping the low health plants from growing. These creatures are cut worms, caterpillars, lucerne flea, red mite, aphis and many other little creatures. These creatures tend to destroy the unhealthy vegetation but also shy away from healthy plants. Because of the $$$ factor both for the manufacturers and the users of these toxins, the plants are sprayed to stop nature from doing its job properly. Hence, much of our food is of the low health type and the nutrition is basically very minimal even though the plant appears to be the "best" available.
The second big problem is that if one waits for the fruit to be ripe before it is picked, there is practically no chance to be able to get it to the market without it being quite damaged so the answer to that is to pick it before it is ripe. This appears to be the best way to get it through the market system without much blemish. Unfortunately, there are many nutrition factors that are not now available to the consumer simply because those factors are only available in the fruit when it ripens on the tree or vine.
The other point that I find is that the "Nutritionists" that I have spoken to have very limited knowledge on this part of the field. Their knowledge is mostly 20 years old and they are not aware of much of the nutritional scientific knowledge that has been discovered in the last 15 years. Yes, I must admit that some of the research done is right up to date on the older known information, but, new lines of scientific information have not been learned.
In 2003 there was a new science that was being declared and that was the Genome and most everyone heard about that. What they heard very little about was something else which is the Glycome. A science that WILL change the way we live IF we do something about learning about it.
I have spoken to Doctors, very knowledgeable people, but when I asked what they knew about the Glycome was almost nothing. the science has been coming across their desks for some years but they never get time to read about subjects they did not study at university. This is quite sad.
I have seen the changes in children with both genetic and food challenged problems and the parents of these children thank me for standing up and being counted and persevering with them to look at things from a different scientific perspective. I am NOT a doctor. I do not pretend to be either. All I am is a person who cares enough to pass on information. YES, I do get called a fanatic and brainwashed as well as many other not printable names, but then who cares? If the information changes the lives of children and adults for the dramatic better, should I be quiet or just keep on passing on the information?
This is getting too long. will put the rest in another blogg.

Once a nutritional unit is placed away by itself, the body may not recognise it as nutrition and expel it as a toxin, thereby gaining no value for the body. There is so much research information that is not being used to assist with Autism and other dis-eases that it is appalling. Anecdotal stories are no longer permitted to be used for the presentation of any nutritional products even if it makes a change to thousands of people's lives. i could say hundreds of thousands of lives as that is fact but it is a no no.
When folks who have had strokes up to 20 years before, add certain nutrition to their food intake and then over the next year or so, some take a few years, to be able to function where they could not before is a tremendous bonus for them. This can be and has been done by certain nutritional supplementation. I could write a lot more but will stop here by just saying that I have seen the results with Autism as well as many other "Challenges".

"every drug is a balance between its potential benefits and its potential risks. If you take a drug you don't need, then you can only suffer the risks."
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/05162008/watch2.html
People seem to forget that vaccinations are no exception to this rule. They are a man-made drug, and they do possess side-effeects. Potential consequences are a scientific reality.
I'd like to know why vaccine-injury rejectionists approve of vaccinating newborn babies against sexually transmitted diseases like Hepatitis B.

Instead of the traditional "do no evil," the medical system over the last generation has turned into a monster whose motto seems to be, suck every penny out of every patient, no matter how much evil is caused. Doctors are often no longer doctors, but pushers or pimps for the pharmaceutical companies and out to make the big bucks as their main or only aim in life. The high cost of medical care in his country and the low quality is due to the profit motive having taken over. A medical insurance system that does not reform the medical establishment is a waste of time. Pushing "cures" and inoculations onto the public by the FDA and the CDC is nothing short of criminal--and genocidal--behavior.

But since you were likely born before 1983, you only have about a third of the inoculations recommended today.
Maybe you can run down to your doctor tomorrow morning and get the 26 or so doses you are missing. Since you're so busy shopping for everyone else, and all.

“In 1983, when autism affected one in 10,000 children, the mandatory vaccination schedule consisted of 10 shots. Today, when one in 94 boys is affected with an autism spectrum disorder, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 36 shots from birth to age 6.”
These other 26 shots are superfluous. The other industrialized countries did not follow the US down this destructive path. They have not sold their souls to the devil: the corporatist medical industry.

Seven US Senators introduced a bill to protect vaccine manufacturers from thousands of pending federal lawsuits filed by parents of vaccine-damaged children.(this includes Autism damage done by vaccines)
On the eve of an historic, billion-dollar world vaccination campaign, a leaked transcript ignites questions of vaccine safety and research corruption.
Meanwhile, US senators fast-track a bill to protect vaccine manufacturers from litigation. With millions of lives at stake, and billions of dollars to lose, will a merger of philanthropy, big business and compromised science win an epic race between corporate agendas and medical ethics?
In this world exclusive report, byronchild exposes how the most powerful medical research bodies in the United States compromise their vaccine safety research for vested interests, as they assist in a global vaccine policy, while a bill looms in the background to protect it all

vaccines are the only commercial product sold for profit in the US that are not subject to product liability laws. Ask yourself why?
I will close from a quote by Dr. Albert Sabien developer of the oral polio vaccine. "Official data have shown that the large scale vaccinations undertaken in the US have failed to obtain any significant improvement of the diseases they were supposed to provide protection"

L-Aspartyl-l-phenylalanine methyl ester, 98%, aspartame CAS #22839-47-0 (a.k.a. Equal, NutraSweet, Spoonful, Benevia, Equal Measure, etc.) is composed of (at least) three things:
1.) aspartic acid, (around 40%) CAS # 56-84-8
2.) phenylalanine, (around 50%) CAS # 63-91-2
3.) methanol (wood alcohol) (10%) CAS # 67-56-1
The phenylalanine breaks down into diketopiperazine (DKP), a known tumor agent, and it is the reason for the FDA mandated “PHENYLKETONURICS: Contains phenylalanine” (PKU) warning label. Diketopiperazine was the major impediment to approval noted in the Searle “Helling” memo.
The methanol (with no natural antidote of Ethanol) breaks down in-solution (diet coke, whatever) into formaldehyde. The human liver also breaks down “free” methanol from any solution into formaldehyde. The body has difficulty eliminating formaldehyde so it combines some of it with water and stores it in the fat. What is not stored in the fat is further converted to formic acid (same thing as ant sting poison).
So, with each sip EVERY user gets a micro-dose of three poisons, two of which (formaldehyde and formic acid) are known carcinogens… along with that side-order of DKP, the tumor agent. A science report was done on diet cokes. The contents of the unopened cans was later evaluated by a reputable food testing laboratory that proved the methanol to formaldehyde conversion, even in the unopened container cooling off in the refrigerator, and the phenylalanine to DKP conversion.
Symptoms derived from what the FDA notes is the most complained about substance in their history, is at this time comprising around 85% of all complaints. The total number of complaints that they admit to is over 10,000 (which is too low, for a number of reasons) and the FDA also suggests that fewer than 1% of the population actually reports a problem. This balloons the over 10,000 actual complaints to over ONE MILLION victims who should have complained! Please note that either of those numbers are significant, especially for a “safe” food additive.
Perhaps the phrase that best applies is that “ASPARTAME is a Pandora’s box of chameleon-like toxins and tumor agents that have 92 FDA acknowledged ways to ruin your life, death being one of them”.
Just bear in mind that damage is caused by all aspartame consumption and it is CUMULATIVE… the damage adds up with each dose. In addition, the FDA mandated warning label “PHENYLKETONURICS: Contains phenylalanine” is often well hidden, and in some cases illegally omitted (with impunity).
The efforts of unhappy victims in helping to spread the truth about aspartame has been a significant factor in aspartame losing 17% of its (Monsanto reported) 1996 billion dollars in sales during 1997 (instead of continued growth). However, the majority of over 200 million clueless victims, in over 100 countries, who are consuming over 5000 aspartame-laced products (many of which are not labeled properly) STILL NEED TO KNOW.

To the poster who remembers the 50s with fondness, well, vaccines and mass disease eradication campaigns were a feature of the 50s, the Golden Age of the fight against infectious disease, when we had virgin antibiotics and a vaccination campaign could wipe out a disease.
Look back a couple of decades prior to that, and what were children and adults dying of? Measles (killed about 200 million people in the last 150 years), smallpox (2 million deaths in 1967 alone, before a massive vaccination campaign ERADICATED smallpox by 1979), TB (a resurgent disease due to antibiotics resistance, but before modern treatment a massive killer, killed about a quarter of the population of Europe in the 19th century), scarlet fever, polio (one of the most feared childhood diseases, the vaccine developed by Salk in 1952 helped to reduce the incidence around the world from hundreds of thousands to around a thousand), diptheria, yaws...
Yes, to the poster who said some of these disease were on the wane already due to the institution of hygiene practices - things like cholera and typhus are well controlled that way - but without vaccines and antibiotics, you northern hemisphere people would still experience something close to the 19th century infant mortality rate of about 25%. We in Africa have infant mortality of about 170 deaths per thousand live births, while in Europe it's about 20 per. Poverty, lack of healthcare, lack of access to vaccines and treatment, the AIDS pandemic, these all factor into that.
I think the autism-caused-by-vaccination people should think about the difference between correlation and causation. Autism is mostly diagnosed in toddlerhood, so it's easy to say, well, he had his vaccinations and then he became odd. But at the same time, he'd been exposed to pollutants in his food, drink, air and environment, not only while he was a foetus, but also during a critical growth period. Why not pin it on those factors instead?
I think it's because blaming one simple, easily removable factor makes it easier to cope with. If we admit the possibility that the things which make our modern life comfortable - the cars, microwaves, food additives, plastics, chemicals in babycare products and cleaning products, and so on - could play a role... well, what are you going to do? Give them up? The horror, the horror!
I believe these poor kids are paying a price for the rapid and largely unexamined change in human life over the last 500 years, and particularly over the last 60. They are among many canaries in the coalmine, warning us very loudly to stop and backpeddle as quickly as we can.

The pseudoscience sales pitch for HBOT, and home HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment), spins around claims regarding mitochondrial dysfunction as the cause of autism. Some MD autism hucksters claiming 20%-30%, or more, cause for autism. It was only a matter of time before the mystical code word, the magic secret decoder ring buzzword linkup would occur: the "dysfunctional" mitochondrial DNA from ABORTED fetal cell lines used to produce the vaccines is contaminating the vaccines and causing autism, ie causing mitochondrial dysfunction in those who get vaccinated. The real culprit (devil) is exposed (abortion) and thus *medically* revealed! Of course, mitochondrial dysfunction, and therefore autism, can be treated only by those special healers who know the secret: HBOT. No mention of the potential negative effects of HBOT, of course. In order to avoid having to have a licensed physician prescribe HBOT, there is home HBOT, so mommy can do it whenever she wants, without a licensed physician lording over her and charging. Why, just look at all the money that saves! Such a deal! A basic home HBOT setup can easily cost $35,000. I wonder how that gets coded on the insurance, or medicaid claims? Also wonder if putting ASD kids in a small closed quiet place for half an hour quiets them down for a while?
But, there's a massive conspiracy to prevent anyone from knowing the real causes autism, and therefore, keep the normal adults away from the "cures". This is a behavioral syndrome, usually with an underlying organic, neurologic component that is almost always prenatal in inception. Vaccines are not "shot" into a infants veins, never. There are many other means of contracting hepatitis B than sexual. There have always been cures looking for a disease. Autism was a miracle made in heaven for selling cures that have had difficulty finding a disease to treat. Everything from cranosacral manipulation to HBOT to secretin to chelation to "methylated" B12 injections and lollypops, strange diets in people who already have or have acquired strange eating habits. Some of these "cures" have well demonstrated lethality. Why wheat creates opiods, a morphine hit, in the body of people with ASD. Ask any person with ASD, and they'll tell you they just love to get their morphine rush, and that's why they are addicted to wheat! ASK PEOPLE WITH ASD ABOUT THEIR OPIOD RUSH!!!!! Perhaps it really does take a open mind to actually ask someone with ASD.
The published paper claiming dysfunctional mitochondrial DNA from ABORTED fetal tissue lines in vaccines causes ASD notes *that the science discounts the possibility that mercury and thimerasol* are the cause of autism. It substitutes a new vaccine causality conspiracy theory, when the evidence against mercury is overwhelming, leading to a different treatment. Seems to be lots of competition right now between chelation and HBOT, for market share. Why did we change to human diploid vaccines in the first place?

I personally feel he’s now a bit better, but he still faces difficulty in communicating. We still hardly hear him say a complete sentence, or answering questions and phone calls properly. His intellectual ability is very high but has low communication skills. At this age, he can read English sentences, write words, numeric but can’t speak a full articulated sentence. He plays, and likes to play with children, with computers, alphabets, numerals, and weird words. Registered doctors (parents of autistic children turned ‘autism experts’ who runs charities and trained on autism abroad) over here declared him not autistic, not even they say he’s suffering from Asperger’s syndrome. He attended a costly pre-school programme for a year when he was 30-months old, and now in Nursery after completing Play Group in Mastermind, a reputed English school in Dhaka. He got all “A”s but “D” for speaking. His result was the best in the class.
His teachers say “he’s okay but need personalised care.” Before he sent to the pre-school, he was just like a computer without a monitor. Yes. Just feel when your computer’s monitor doesn’t work but your CPU is all right and it take commands from your keyboard! We were in the dark, and cannot get what the CPU is doing. We were in desolation, and became restive. And just feel he was not a computer but a child! Do you know a child who is looking intelligent, can see and hear, can talk but unwilling to, or simply unable to? Now, just feel how restless one could be when one knows a child who has locked in him or herself, and we are unable to know what is happening in him or her. Yes, there are many, and they live on with their throbbing and suffering, and we call them autistic.
We communicate with other with so much ease, but for such a child, it is a gigantic task. For this cause we fail to understand the geniuses behind these CPUs without a monitor. Let us not squabble who is to blame or who would pay for their treatment. Please do all necessary, let us put all our resources to help these children overcome their problems, be it your son or daughter, or other millions irrespective of race, religion, cast or creed. And, if possible, do serious independent researches to know whether the early immunisation has any stake.
